  1. Hi! I was just wondering if there were any reaper dragon minis close in size to the young green wizkids dragon? or any other dragons of any types that's not wizkids that's similar in size? I'm wanting to run an encounter with two dragons of the same size and would prefer not to double up on minis, and would love to expand my dragon collection to other companies than wizkids.
  2. Hi gang. I always have trouble with finishing minis if they take too long. Groups of minis are a frequent struggle for me. What kind of advice do you have to avoid burnout? I try to mix things up to stave off the exhaustion and tedium. I typically switch off between working on groups of minis, to just doing one at a time. Small minis to big minis. Detailed minis to simple minis. I'll even avoid things that are the same color back-to-back. Anything to help avoid getting sick of painting. But I have a harder time just getting through a group of minis. I'll try breaking them into sub groups, or just focusing on painting everything of the same color like all of the wood, or all the leather. Maybe I'm just tired in general, but I'm definitely feeling worn down on my current set, which is a shame because I am excited to see them finished. What advice do you have? How do you avoid burnout? How do you get yourself to just keep painting?
  3. Hello, compatriots! I am a college student in desperate need of useful sources of information! I have taken upon the task of writing my final project in my composition class on the history of wargaming and tabletop miniatures. Painting miniatures is potentially my biggest hobby, and it seemed like an excellent topic for a paper. I need to do a 12-minute elevator pitch of my paper next Friday, and the paper itself must be 2,500 words and is due at the end of the semester (May 5th). The issue is, I'm having difficulty finding sources that I can cite. I'd go hunting for books, but I don't have a whole ton of time to wait for shipping. So, I've come to you folks. If there are any sources that you are aware of that will help me in my journey, please post them here. If there are important people I could potentially email and ask questions of, that would be cool, too. I already have some info with W. Britain beginning production of hollow lead toy soldiers and the publication of H.G. Welles' "Little Wars". I'd like to know more about when and how painting miniatures for wargames became a hobby of its own, major changes in the miniature manufacturing industry, key players, where we are today, etc.
  4. Hi all. Was hoping you could help me find a mini. I have a player in an upcoming game of D&D who wants a flying monkey as a familiar. I'm having trouble finding a good option. I'm surprised how few options there are. I'm looking for one with feathered wings as opposed to bat wings. And something without a fez. Minimal clothing is okay (a vest or some bracelets) but in general looking for something that's more like a wild animal. STLs are okay. But physical is better. Thanks in advance!
  5. Anyone have any useful leads on a set of elves in tribal garb? I'm specifically looking for elves that would fit in a jungle, tropic, or coastal setting. Not looking for heavy armor. If there's some gender diversity in the set that's even more ideal. I could kit bash if needed, but trying to avoid that. Also looking for things that would fit well in scale with Reaper Bones' offerings. Have I made this easy enough for you all?
  6. I cant find any of my old threads. I used to have links in my signature which doesnt display in mobile, and I'm rarely on a computer and its awkward on a phone (like I havent been able to make it work, but I'm assuming its possible). I can't search just my topics with an empty search term. So how am I supposed to find things now? How does everybody else do it. I think a modern can lock this file. I've gotten desktop working better since I posted.
  7. Hi all. I recently acquired a few bookshelves which have become the new home for my miniatures and gaming materials. The shelves came with a good out section in the middle and I think it might be the perfect place for a photo set-up. I currently use a white sheet of cardstock as an infinite backdrop with the two 1520 lumens daylight LEDs that I use for painting and a light source from either side. It works well enough but it's just inconvenient enough to set up that I'm looking for change. I figure now is a great time for an upgrade. I'm thinking I've never really worked with lighting and anything electrical so I think that's mostly where I need guidance. I'm hoping I can fasten some LED strips to the walls and top and then run the wiring out that hole that was conveniently cut out of the back. Other than that, I'm thinking I can just tape in a sheet of white poster paper and swap it out if it starts to get too beat up. If I'm really lucky, there will still be room inside to store my camera bag. I also am wondering if some kind of diffusion will be necessary or if the LED strips will have a general enough soft light on their own. I also have to be mindful of wall placement because the arms of the "door" brush against the wall about midway when closed. For the curious, the shelf is about 14" deep, 13" high, and 25" across. And the open "door" is about 14" Thoughts/advice of any kind are welcome! **** As a side note, if the LEDs work well here, Iight try swapping out the old lights in the display cabinets up top. They are a gross old orange color.
  8. Hi all. I've got a few minis floating around that were painted when my skills were lesser. Been humoring the idea of touching them up. My finished minis are sealed with a coat of Krylon Matte spray. Any tips for touching up minis? Anything to look out for?
  9. Help! I'm hating this paintjob. I grabbed this demilich thinking it'd be a fun and easy paintjob. But everything I do makes me hate it more. I was trying to go for a green flame look, so yellow on the inside, and gradually darker green highlights on the outside. These were drybrushed and then cleaned up by hand. I think this is where the problem started because it's not reading as fire. It just looks like a blobby mess? Should I just scrap it and start over with more of an ethereal glow that's darker in the middle and lighter on the edges? I also am not happy with the base. I've never painted a 2D base before, I've always added some kind of texturing material. And although I'm reasonably satisfied with how the base looks on the summoning circle behind the demilich, it looks so bad on the demilich base. And I think my green glow isn't helping. And finally the Bones. I imagined that if there was a green light behind the Bones then they'd be tinted green and darker on the outside. Again .. this just doesn't look right. I'm normally fairly confident in my painting abilities, but I think I've landed in unfamiliar territory and I'm just not sure how to salvage or proceed. What can I do?
  10. I've gotten to the basing point for Ma'al. I decided I wanted to put ivy vines around the base. While I just did the vines out of green stuff I'm not sure what to do about the leaves. I have a GSW leaf punch that I want to use but I'm not sure how to prep the leaves so nothing weird comes in with them. It's been suggested to me to use the oven but was given no further details. I have other ideas if I can't get the leaves to work but I'd really like to use them since I went through the trouble of getting the punch specifically for this. So what would you do to real leaves to make them work for basing?
  11. I do not understand how this mini is supposed to go together. There is a large hair bulge that is supposed to fit in the hollow of the back. I tried sliding and twisting and cannot get the head to fit on in a dry fit. I cant imagine doing this after painting. I don't really want to try and paint and be unable to get into corners. Has anyone posted this anywhere? Things got caught and I see white stress marks on the mini where I had to try and force it off and it makes me super nervous to try anything again. This is exactly why I would 100 times out of 100 take a poorly glued at the factory mini. It's effectively wasted money for me, because I can't do anything with it.
  12. I recently bought the 2 headed Troll "Lardgulp" to use as a boss in an upcoming battle for my play group. The problem is that compared to the reaper black Rock Troll I received he is not so intimidating... However, I've seen on other sites a new reaper black or bones 2 headed Troll for pre order. I was wondering if there were any pictures of it compared to the Rock troll, and when will it be available on the site properly?
  13. So I've painted up a couple of sample pieces of my 4bot tiles and to try out an ice recipe. I thought I'd get some feedback. It seems a bit too sea glass for me. Phtalo green (yellow ink) +medium, then drybrush of teal, turquoise, pale blue, and adding white. Also included a pic of previous recipe using turquoise ink and pale blue, then white drybrush. And materials Thoughts?
  14. Ordered Ma'al Drakar to play the role of Tiamat in my Rise of Tiamat campaign I'm currently running. (Icons of the realm Tiamat is just to small IMHO) Having just received it in the mail I'm finally understanding the scale of the project I have Doomed myself to. Lol I was wondering if people had tips on mold line removal for pieces this large, what you suggest for Gap filling between all the assembled pieces, should I prime before assembly, and if there is a best way (or horribly wrong way) to pin all the pieces together.
  15. I'm taking the leap and about to buy my first airbrush for mini painting and was hoping I could get some advice on what to buy. The Airbrushing: compendium has been very helpful and I've spent hours, days, what feels like years researching and I want to pull the trigger... I live in Canada and after ringing around some hobbyshops etc it seems amazon is the best bang for my buck. I have paint and access to a Campbell Hausfeld 2 Gallon Air Compressor (I will purchase another compressor in a few months once I have some more disposable income). My main concerns are does this compressor work with the airbrush listed below, do I need anything else? Heres what I've got in mind: NEO CN GRAVITY-FEED DUAL-ACTION AIRBRUSH $97.20 CAD Paasche 10-foot Nylon Braided Hose $18 CAD Airbrush Cleaner 4 Kit, Washing Tools - Glass Cleaning Pot etc $22 CAD Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner 85ml $7 CAD any advice would be appreciated
  16. Hi! I just got some Warhammer pink horrors and have no idea what MSP colors to buy to paint them. I have no pinks at all and don't know what would be best. Does anyone have any advice? Note that I have all of the citadel shades so I think I'm covered there. Thanks in advance!
  17. So, trying to figure out what I'm doing for reapercon. I've lost my vallejo leather instructions in my move, so I'm not super comfortable with where I'm at painting new leather and wood. I have a few miniatures started that I could touch up/finish, or I could start a different new miniature... Here are the ones I'm currently considering: 1. Oathsworn Tiefling I really think she has the best face I've ever painted, and I'm really happy about what I achieved in her purple sash. But the rest of her, I'm a bit iffy on. 2. Reaper Bryn Half-Elf Rogue So, I'm really proud of her leathers (before I lost my directions) and her sleeves, but she has on of the worst faces I've done recently, due to the more narrow shape of her face. Her hair also leaves a lot to be desired. I also am worried about being able to finish those remaining leathers as well as the first several. 3. Reaper Ametrine, Gnome Alchemist She's my most recent mini, and my first attempt at trying to figure out the leather on my own as well as my first attempt at painting potion bottles. I'm really happy about her hair, and her face is decent, even if it isn't my best. I'd love to here opinions about where one(s) to choose, and advice on how to potentially improve them.
  18. Okay, here's the situation; my parents went away on a week's vacation, and now that you're rapping Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff to yourself (you are, right?), here's the real situation: I'm looking for a thing to represent a mounted Undead lord, the base size needs to be 75mm square (so fairly large), and it needs to occupy most of that space (or need minimal assistance from clever basing to look like it belongs on said base, at least). This precludes standard cavalry, obviously. It also needs to be wingless (or easily converted to wingless), as Wings would only serve to confuse my opponents in game (Kings of War). I'm open to any material, any manufacturer, though Reaper is strongly preferred. I'm thinking of also doing a non-traditional mount pose, like the Ghost King standing on the mounts back or shoulder or whatever, or even better, the Male Revenant from Bones 2. My first thought was to take one of the two Grave Golems I have and use that (without the gate wings), but that would really be stretching the empty space on the base to the max, as it's probably better suited for a 40mm square or 50mm square base at max. Of course, I could always fill the base with tombstones and skulls and stuff and build it up to the center, but I'd like to avoid that. The in-game creature is substantial and I'd like the mini to represent the size well. My next thought was I could do something like @Girot did for the Bone Horror (3rd picture in the store), which he nixed the wings from, and I think it looks fine. The problem here is the monster itself is pretty substantially threatening without a rider and doesn't really look like a mount. I'm not sure where I would put one (I could put a traditional saddled mount on it I guess, but I'm iffy on this idea). The main issue I have pulling the trigger on this beastie though is size, I'm not seeing Bryangles on the store pics, and having a hard time finding other scale shots with this guy in it. I see on his Deviant Art page, Girot says he used a 60mm round, do you think an extra 15mm each side would be too much? Especially because that's all in one dimension? The rest of the base will need a lot of doctoring to make up for the emptiness. Any other ideas?
  19. Hey guys. I'm back after having my wisdom teeth removed :/ nasty surgery had to have some recovery. But I started painting again and I was wondering; am I getting speckling here? It used to be really bad but I diluted down a touch and I think it's better. Could use some help.
  20. Hi guys, So I got a greater number of Infinity Aleph minis from a guy who doesn't find them fit to his playstyle. Anyway - I decided to create my own bases, opposite to the clean and attractive style of the Aleph minis using some kind of a long lost and ruined city. Like this: I also got Atalanta and her SpotBot and I think that this spotbot has quite a personality and I want to create his base accordingly. (Picture for reference) So I thought that it would be fitting to have some kind of robot head or so he could stare at. (Like to 2b in the picture below - but being a mechanical rabbit with sad eyes). So I thought about using a space marine head but I don't find it fitting to the whole setting and it would just disappear between the rubble and the debris I prepared for the base. And it wouldn't match the style of Infinity. On the other hand - I tried using a bandai mecha/gundam head and it is way too big for a 25mm base. Does anyone have an idea which could help me solve the problem?
  21. I'm painting a Rageclaw Warrior and I'm trying to figure out what this thing is. He has a leather strap wrapped around one of his hind legs and there's something hanging off it. Can anyone tell what it is? It's a package or a letter maybe? I don't know what color to paint it.
  22. My friend found this dwarf, he thinks he got it around 2006, about eleven years ago:
  23. Anyone have any tips for making good bases for miniatures?
  24. So hear is a loaded cannon for every one; How do you paint fabric to make it look realistic. I personally tend to build up many layers of highlights and shadows and that how I do fabric, I may free hand a designee on but that really about it. I've notice wile going threw some of last years winners for reaper con that some of the fabric was painted in a almost stippled effect and it look more like a hand stitched/hand made dress or tabard. I have been trying to replicate this with no avail what so ever and going back threw old work I seem to have gotten something close back when I was learning to paint and I have no idea what I did to get that textured look. Any advice out there on how to get this look?
  25. Ok so I'm 5 months from 40 and never painted a model in my life. But a group of friends and I have recently started a D&D 5e campaign on guys trip and really got into it. However it soon became apparent that stick pins and grid board suck. So i wanted to get some minis for our game.... I was looking at pre paints but those are few and far between or over priced so watched a few Youtube videos... got an itch and firgured why the hell not.... so since i live in bumfuq nowhere i ordered from amazon and ebay the types of figures i needed for our characters a dwarf cleric, elf ranger, and elf mage.... i started with the dwarf, figured it would be easier as my friend likes alliance in WoW and always plays dwarfs but soon learned metal paints are a pain in the rump to me. the elf i did last night and i think i see improvement over the dwarf attempt. though seeing pictures brought out the flaws i hope fix before clear coating either one. i was in such a newbie rush i primed before triming the extra mold lines on the elf but really i seem to be missing the trick even with a new knife blade the lines seem to splinter or split and not come off the model. maybe i need files? seems like there were alot of defects on these plastic minis... my mage is metal and much better and detailed. Please let me know what you think and where i may need to ficus my attention to improve. Oh and any and all tips on mold line/imperfection removal definately appreciated :-)
