Hair raising good time: hair volume
R2ED posted a topic in Show Off: PaintingI can't remember who gave me the tip, and I've exhausted myself looking. A while back i was complaining about my inability with painting hair and how i struggled to make it look like there was volume to it. The person giving feedback mentioned how to build up where there was light or curve in the hair and have a few examples. It took me a good while to understand how they did it, but i have come a long way and owed them a thank you. Practice on different models had really helped a lot. I try to push the contrast up on the hair, since it's usually a focal point. As I'm doing that, keeping in mind where the folds or curls or light catches it. It's a fun challenge, but I've become much better at it thanks to whoever it was who told me. Here's to you, whoever you are Hair Master Jedi. - your apprentice
Churrusina - 60195
Pochi posted a topic in Show Off: PaintingI finished Churrusina. I am mostly happy with her. Not 100% on the spell effect. I painted and repainted it and decided this was the best try so stopped. I have included the purple smoke photo I used for inspiration, I just couldn't quite get there! Anyway, I think she looks like she could be an interesting NPC for my players to "meet"! C&C welcome. Thanks for looking! Pretty purple smoke.
JackMann posted a topic in Tips and Advice: SculptingI'm painting up this troll, and a buddy suggested a leonine paint scheme, since the tail looks a bit lionish. I was thinking that I might try sculpting some hair on him as a mane. However, I've done very little sculpting, so I was wondering if any one has a good guide on the subject. I'm particularly looking for long scraggly, fur-like hair.
Painting Green Hair
NomadZeke posted a topic in Tips & Advice: PaintingA cursory search found nothing...but: has anyone tried painting a mini with green hair? Like a more subtle "natural" tone rather than blazing neon or something? The reason is 'currently' a surprise but if anyone has tips/tricks that'd be great!
77274 Dragon Hatchling -- "Mint Chocolate"
AutumnHare posted a topic in Show Off: PaintingI present for your amusement, the Mint Chocolate Dragon Familiar: As an avid gamer, I have a few sets of dangling dice sticks to hold my hair up. Since I have been spending so much time painting minis the last couple years, I thought it was time to add something painted to my hairstick collection. And of course... Cute little dragon.... Anyone who knows me knows I bought at least two. Here he is flying in for his closeups: Edit: Autocorrect Fail.
Itty bitty hairs in paint...
72moonglum posted a topic in Tips & Advice: PaintingSo I've been noticing and it's kind of obnoxious that every so often I'm finding really small hairs, maybe a millimeter or five while I'm painting pushing around paint lately. Has anybody else ever had this issue? I sometimes wonder if it's the paintbrushes I use, currently Rosemary and Co. I don't remember this happening much when I was using the Winsor and Newton series 7 brushes....
Electric Blue Flaming Hair
wdmartin posted a topic in Tips & Advice: PaintingI'm painting up 14267: General Matisse as a PC for a guy in our campaign. He's specified that the PC -- an aasimar -- has hair made of bright blue fire, like Hades from the Disney Hercules. It's going to be challenging, and I'm not entirely sure how to approach it. My initial thought is to base coat it in pure white, then successive layers of blue, shifting from more white in the mix to more blue with each new layer, and starting each pass closer to the end of the hairs to get a gradation from hottest (white) near the roots, to coolest (blue) near the ends. Does that sound reasonable, or is there another approach I should consider? Hair is hard enough when it isn't made of fire!
02110: Darby Darkleaf
Pingo posted a topic in Show Off: PaintingThis is 02110: Darby Darkleaf, or rather one of a set of three, 03359: DHL Classics: Female Halflings. They are not quite identical, since the individual figure has a larger base than the three in the set. All three halflings in the set are tiny and Old School style, with especially small faces with eyes that are shaped a little difficult to paint. They are, however, very cute. I painted her eyes rather larger than they were actually sculpted. I think this might be the first time in twenty years I've tried to paint a mini red-blonde. I'm not sure how successful she turned out.
I'm referring generally to series 331 as well as some of the synthetics, 2230, 2240, and 2250. I guess these things are usually called rake brushes? Anyway, I've got some Deinonychus antirrhopuses I need to paint up and as a bit of an amateur paleontology observer nerd, I'd like to cover up the '70's era scales with something that looks like feathers. I'll probably try my hand at sculpting feathers someday, but not now! Has anyone tried using these rake or comber brushes to paint feathers? Any tips or tricks for avoiding abject failure? (I am okay with most failure, I just have to break out the liquid green if it's abject, I think!)
Blue Chainmail, and Blonde hair help.
Werewolvians posted a topic in Tips & Advice: PaintingI'm planning on painting Ulf Gormundr soon, and I want to get him as close as i can to the painted example on this website. So maybe someone can help me out with some of my questions. To be blunt: How did they do that blue chainmail? How did they do that NMM Gold? How did they get the blonde hair to look so real? On the subject of blonde hair, I have the reaper 3 tier Blonde paints. It works well, but it doesn't come out looking as good as Ulf's hair. While i'm on the subject of blonde hair, I'm also planning on painting Seoni, as she is on this site, and her blonde hair looks post worthy as well. Appreciate any help. Sorry so many questions.
Adding hair to a mini
Mavith posted a topic in Tips and Advice: SculptingHello everyone! I am new to this forum and my name is Matt. I have a question that maybe some of you that have experience can hopefully help me with. I want to purchase the "Technic League Captain" mini from the Pathfinder series (link below) This model really has the look i was going for with one of my characters. The only problem is that he is bald. My character has long hair. What ways would i go about sculpting and attaching long hair to this character? I have painted before but iv'e never sculpted or modified anything. Hopefully someone can give me some advice. Thank you =) http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Pathfinder/sku-down/60113
03246: Chained Succubus. How to do hair?
Jay posted a topic in Works in Progress: PaintingThe wings are coming out well. I got some good advice from Jennifer at ReaperCon. I think the hair color is good but the highlighting isn't working for me. I did an orange base coat and some fire red shadows. I think some dark purple to deepen the shadows more and perhaps some white for highlights. Any suggestions?
Replicating a specific hair color
Johmpa posted a topic in Tips & Advice: PaintingGreetings! I have just registered here and is looking for some advice. I have been mostly warhammer figures up until now with varying degrees of ambition. Now, however, I've just ordered some miniatures for roleplaying purposes, which I indend to give my very best. In any case, I have found that this one fits very closely to one of my characters, the hair color especially. What I'm looking for here is some advice as to how I can replicate this hair color effect. My current thinking is (using GW colors here) to use Shadow Grey as a base and then layer towards Skull White. But I don't know if I'm on the right track. Maybe some older a wiser minds can help me here.
