From the second Bones kickstarter, the Sea Hag: A very simple but effective paint job. I started with a black undercoat with a heavy-ish light grey zenithal primer on. I slapped some Vallejo Nocturna Natural Flesh on the lower rags and Scale75 Arbuckles Brown on the top rags. Then I sloshed CItadel Athonian Camoshade all over it, drawing off most pooling to avoid those tidemarks. Very light drybrysh with Vallejo Nocturna Cold Flesh when dry. The hair got a coat of Vallejo Nocturna Pale Flesh followed by Army Painter Dark Tone Quickshade Ink. Eyes get a dot of Citadel Wazdakka Red followed by a smaller dot of Citadel Flash Gitz Yellow. Base and done. Even though this mini is billed as a Sea Hag and she does have a slight fishy look about her, I am thinking she will be joining my Ghoul army as some sort of subleader. Good evening everybody! So have been doing lately a lot of classic Julie Guthrie from her Partha days and the last one I've finished is what is currently listed as an Archer, but that previously came in a set of three Rangers in her Partha Line "All Things Dark and Dangerous". Being he's these days called an archer, I kind of deviated from the typical browns and greens as I kind of wanted some deeper, darker colors. I started off with his lavender shirt and then just kept going with different plums and purples. So he's not too nature-like but he's maybe a moon or night ranger. Anyway, hope you enjoy him! and here's that image he originally came from back in the eighties. I've got the two guys done, I'm working now on the gal with the staff, hope to have her done before Memorial day is over:

So here is the third figure from the set I was working on recently, a female fighter or ranger with staff. Nowadays on the Ral Partha's site, they just call her a fighter, but she originally belonged to a three piece blister pack of Rangers from Julie Guthrie's "All Things Dark and Dangerous" figure line. Being she was a ranger originally, quite the opposite of the Ranger Archer I just finished a few days ago, I tried to give her a bit more natural colors. And here is then the group together, and the original image I found from an old catalogue: So anyhow, fun figure to paint, hope you all enjoy!

So I finished this one two nights ago, didn't get around to taking his photo yesterday because I got home too late last night and it was just too dark to take advantage of natural light. Here is another Julie Guthrie Ral Partha classic from the eighties a hooded fighter/warrior/ranger with sword and shield. Being he was originally listed in the eighties as a ranger: I wanted to give greens and browns, but nowadays being he is just being called a hooded fighter, I still wanted to keep some natural colors but ended up giving him some non-rangery colors on his shield: Also his inner cloak I used the same colors and painted at the same time as the female archer I just finished (her green gloves). Anyhows, hope you enjoy another classic figure from the past! Julie Guthrie was great back then and she's even greater now!

Labella DeMornay, Banshee from the first Bones kickstarter, This is a green translucent, and like all translucents I undercoated it first with Army Painter Anti Shine Matt Varnish, so the following washes would have something to adhere to. This is key to painting translucents. Also, make sure to use transparent paints, like inks and quickshade washes. Opaque paints will invariably ruin the translucent effect. The green tinge of the plastic will affect any transparent colours that are used, and so this must be taken into consideration. For her brown hair, I used Citadel Carroburg Crimson shade (a dark red). The skin is Citadel Casandora Yellow Shade, the dress is old Citadel Blue glaze (red flip-cap hex pot) and ditto Turquoise glaze. Taking care to draw off any pooling and to avoid unsightly tide marks by smoothing with a damp brush while wet. The aim is to tint the translucent plastic, not sp much paint over it, or even "shade" it. Not sure how pleased I am with the results here. Good evening everybody! Just finished this one up last night and got pictures taken this afternoon. This one is an old school Julie Guthrie model from her Ral Partha All Things Dark and Dangerous days. Can't say if it was originally just an archer or a ranger, but she's definitely an archer and it doesn't take much imagination to make her a ranger as well. As always, colors gave me fits, but with the thought she was a ranger, I wanted mostly greens and browns, with some pops of colors (like her lavender money bag and her red sword hilts). The hardest choice on this lovely lady was the color choice for her gloves. I finally gave up and painted her with a light green (the same green that I'm using for the interior of a cloak on my next figure). So anyway, I took a bunch of angles of her, hope you like her!

The second of the day's random bones is the Flesh Golem from the third kickstarter. Basically your Frankenstein's Monster. There was a flesh golem in the first kickstarter as well, but this one is larger, fatter and he has got technological bits sticking out here and there. I painted the different parts in several distinct fleshtones, but the subsequent wash with Druuchi Violet and Athonian Camoshade evened out the colour significantly more than I expected. The purple seams I painstakingly painted in more or less dissappeared! The ripped pants started out dark blue green, but ended up dark brown. Apart from the drying time I spent maybe half an hour on this mini. So finally got the base finished tonight for this great Julie Guthrie figure from the eighties. I'm kind of miffed about the actual base, it's one of those transparent red Wyrd bases. When I went to the game shop, they didn't have any this size in black, so I had to grab red, prime and paint over it. Anyhow, this is I think the last in my series of leonine beasts. I've done now two lions, two manticores, and this chimera. I think I'm going to give the lions a rest for a tad. Anyway, hope you enjoy him, took a few pictures! Thanks, Mark

Storm Giant. Or Blue Zeus if you will. Being from the first Bones kickstarter, this mini is in the softer material. That big sword there was a noodle when I received it. I repositioned it with hot water, and again, it is for the most part OK even if it is slightly bent, it is only apparent from certain angles. Also, it has a mould line indentation groove going down the front shoulder that I probably should have filled, as it became very apparent after painting. I based it on a 76mm bespoke 3Dprinted round lipped base. For some reason, the female is quite a lot smaller than the male. Say what you will, they certainly are giant sized when compared with humans! I chose to paint them as Papa Smurf and Smurfette, just because. In the third kickstarter Reaper started redoing the Giants, replacing them with significantly larger versions of previously released ones. These have not been remade (yet). I would expect them to do that in the expected-to-be-upcoming fifth kickstarter, as they have recently shown off a print of the same female figure in a different pose and at about twice the size. 77163: Male Storm Giant From the first Bones kickstarter, 2013 Storm Giants subset. I have always found the concept of snakemen, with the heads, bodies and undercarriages of snakes, but arms like men, to be a bit of an evolutionary fluke. How exactly did these evolve? Of course, the answer is as always "magic" or "don't ask, don't tell". This one is from the very first Bones kickstarter and as such is in the earliest, whitest and most bendy type of Bones material. The weapons were a bit noodly, but nothing that could not be fixed with a spot of hot water though. I painted this as a coral snake. Hello everybody! So last night finally finished this little lady, a very petit mage sculpted by Julie Guthrie in the early eighties. With this one, I kind of felt that her shoes were so petite that I didn't want to put neither grass nor cornmeal (for dirt) in front of them, as to not completely cover them up, so I just did a super simple base without anything. I really like this figure and didn't realize how much detail she has until I got her primed and really started working on her. I had no idea she had a rose on the top of her staff for example. and all the bangles she's got on and with the chains on her left hand, couldn't really appreciate it in her unpainted state. Before I primed her, she kind of reminded me of the Julie Guthrie Hill Giant I painted recently, where you couldn't be sure how her face was going to really look, but when you got her primed and painted she looked a lot more decent. I thought the highlights on the cape were going to pop out a little bit more, but oh well. Next time I'll do deeper shadows and higher highlights! So hope you all enjoy! Mark

So at the same time I was working on my female hill giant, I was also working on two centaurs that the great Julie Guthrie had sculpted around 1982. I did them at the same time because I was looking for the same flesh tones because both I figured spend tons of time outside so should be very tan. Anyhow, an advanced warning and a link because the female centaur is showing off her mammal parts, so here's a link to her front: Female Centaur front and from the other side: As well as her male companion, who is chasing her around it seems like: Anyway a flash back into the past. These centaurs weren't actually available too long either, being replaced by other figures under their same code. I was told that if a set or figure didn't sell at least 200 pieces, they would get retired, so I imagine this might have been their fate back then which is a pity because they are really beautiful minis. And I've had both of these since the eighties, but finally got around to painting them, so hope you enjoy! It's never too late to paint a mini!

Hello Everybody, so partially inspired by a post Master Buglips did a year ago that I can't help but keep looking back to, and partially inspired by the fact that this is a figure I've always wanted to get around to painting since I first saw it in the latter seventies/early eighties, I've finally taken the plunge and splattered some paint on this excellent figure sculpted by Julie Guthrie. Unpainted, her face seems to be a little bit surreal, but once you actually get some paint on her, her face becomes both brutal and beautiful at the same time. As in everything, these pictures let me see tons of imperfections, but if you look at it with your bare eyeballs, or even close up with some magnification goggles, you don't really notice certain things. I really love this figure, and started with her skin as a base of Tanned Shadow, and then went down and up from there. Tried to keep her firmly tied into earth tones, but had to do something with the jewels, but tried to make them "nature related" by keeping them green. For a giant nowadays, she's pretty small, but if you put her up against any Partha piece of your time, she fits in quite nicely. I now have a painted giant collection that has reached the grand old amount of seven, three Meier Frost Giants, two Meier Hill Giants, a Meier Cloud Giant, and this Julie Guthrie gem, who is the smallest and squattest of them all (except if you hunt down the Tom Meier Fire Giant, who is probably just about the same size as a 21st century man-sized figure).

So as everybody knows, in 2017 I attended my first ReaperCon ever. There I got to meet many wonderful people in real life, and I have to say it was probably the finest group of human beings I've ever spent time with. We picked a table at random, and so wound up with some random people sharing our table as people came to the con. @pcktlnt was one of them, and even though everybody here already knows he's pretty great I want to tell you that face-to-face he's even better. Pcktlnt is a genuine top-tier human being, even among such a great crowd of people. Before ReaperCon, being aware of the melt table there, I declared it my intention to raid it and Save The Parthas from doom. Since I could not monitor the melt table the whole time (even though I tried), I put the word out. I didn't care who wound up with them, I wasn't trying to get them for myself, I just wanted to save them from being melted into oblivion. Save The Parthas! was the cry. Now, to be 100% frank, my actual objective was to save the precious and rare TSR-era Parthas above all else. But, since asking people to scan the table for minis made in this specific 8-year span with these specific features and check the bases seemed like rather a lot to ask, Save The Parthas was shorter, sweeter, and simpler. And Save The Parthas they did! At one point, I forget which day, pcktlnt came by the table and delivered an old 1982 Partha giant lady. At some point in the past she had been painted with green skin and yellow fur. While a touch older than what I usually collect, I graciously accepted the free mini and said I would paint it up. I have, and here she is: For the age, she's not a terrible mini. She turned out, in fact, to be a very early Julie Guthrie. This particular specimen, being from the 80s and made of soft lead, did have some wear and tear. So I worked with what I could, and I'm happy to add her to the shelf. But the story doesn't end there! When I looked her up to identify her, I discovered she was Version 1 of the female giant from All Things Dark And Dangerous. I was familiar with Version 2, but had never seen this one. So I found some scanes of Partha catalogs older than my physical copies (which only go back to 1993) and she appeared in 1983 (stamped 1982 on the base) and was replaced in 1985 by version 2. Which means, technically, she's actually MORE RARE than many of the TSR minis! I don't know who brought it, but if you're here I'd be interested to know how you came by this figure. She's been painted, probably a long time ago, and has seen some action. She's got some history, and it didn't end just yet. Sometime in the 80s somebody saw her in a blister and said: "that's nice, I'll buy that" and now she's here, probably in a different country. What happened in all that time? How many players did she smush? I have no way to know, but now she's mine and I've grown fond of her. I love her just as much as any other mini - whether Takhisis or Factol Rhys. So a special thank you to @pcktlnt for your tireless stalking of the melt table, and for giving me the chance to own a little piece of odd history and give a miniature a good home. As an aside, if anybody wants a good melt table story, ask @Dr.Bedlam about The Joker With One Foot. It's a legendary tale, told best by him. (I saw the Joker with my own eyes before he told me).

This is 03415, Lanura Windsong, Elf Sorcerer, sculpted by Julie Guthrie. She's an appealing sculpt -- and popular, judging from all the painted versions in the store and the Inspiration Gallery. I picked her up years ago after seeing someone's lovely version on these forums, and now I've gotten round to her. She has high boots and a long coat and a cute scarf over short tousled curls. I think of her as a sort of corsair or pirate, maybe, with lots of wands and things. I am looking forward to painting all those spheres on her like colored crystal. I have been trying to limit the number of female minis I paint with bare midriffs, but she's just so dang cute! All paints used are Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics, except where noted. Color mixes are (usually) noted, but not exact ratios. Questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them. Critiques are appreciated. This is the way I usually start miniature figures: Lightly primed with Titanium White, then when that is dry, washing it over with Burnt Umber. Burnt Umber is a dark, transparent pigment that settles into crannies when thinned down and shows the details very well. It also gives a nice warm undertone to later paint layers. I started laying in her skin tone with the darks pure Burnt Umber and the lights a golden-bronze mix of Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, and a little Titanium White. I also am spending some time on each pass tucking paint into all the tiny white dots where the paint failed to get into a nook or cranny. I don't normally paint much with pure black, but here I used some Carbon Black to color her hair and as a wash to lay in a few darker shadows on her and start to contour her face and eye sockets. Then I picked up some more highlights with the golden-bronze again, and a little more pure black shading. And then look, it's a face! Her sclerae are a pale grey mixed from Titanium White and a little Carbon Black. Her pupils are pure Carbon Black, highlights are pure Titanium White. Lips a base of Red Iron Oxide shaded with Burnt Umber and Quinacridone Magenta. Some more contouring with the bronze and Umber shadows and Bob's your uncle.

When I first got the Naga from the Bones kickstarter I wasn't that excited. It looked ok at a glance but I didn't think I needed a naga at the time. Eventually I thought I try to extend my scenery collection and try to paint it as a statue. When I did and looked a bit closer at the mini I realized that it's a really cool sculpt! I still choose to go the statue route but I might just have to buy a new one and make a real one. I was also pleasantly surprised on how some superglue + the foam from the blister pack that some miniatures come with + Army Painter greenskin created some decent looking vegetation.

Reaper Bones 77407: Death Dog from the third Bones kickstarter. Currently available from the reaperminis.com webstore. Sculpted by Julie Guthrie. I made a bespoke 3Dprinted 45x30mm base for it. I went for a black dog with red demonic eyes for this.

Picked up this little guy bc he caught my eye, and it was no surprise it was Julie Guthrie’s handiwork. She’s my favorite sculptor, so I took more time then was necessary out of respect. Here's my 2018 Ghoulie Bag translucent smoky grey 77636, Death Shroud. I simply did a blueish highlight and painted the base on this Dark Heaven Bones model sculpted by Julie Guthrie.

Hi everyone, here's a simple paint job on a translucent version of 77096, Labella DeMornay. This model was sculpted by Julie Guthrie. I painted it with green ink and acrylics.

All of a sudden, two bear-sized rodents covered in open sores and overripe pustules emerges from the debris piled up in the corner of the oubliette. They rush towards you their open maws showing six-inch incisors. Here are the 77198, Barrow Rats, Dark Heaven Bones sculpted by Julie Guthrie.

Here comes the boggy 77521, Gravewailer, Dark Heaven Bones sculpted by Julie Guthrie. This ghostly aberration is also known as a Gibbering Mouther or Babélien. I painted it with acrylics, ink and sealed it with gloss brush-on sealer.

Hello guys and gals, here's a new figure I just finished, a Ral Partha figure from the eighties, a female warrior, kind of a bit barbaric, with axe and shield. As Always, deciding just simple things like colors were kind of more time consuming than they should have been. I did her hair black because I'd seen the same model very nicely painted and done blonde and didn't want to copy. This was sculpted by the great Julie Guthrie, sculpting goddess. Also had no idea what color the shield should have been so eventually and randomly chose green! Anyhoos, enjoy!

“Off to off the wizard” The figures are from Reaper Bones KS3, “Chronoscope Wild West Oz”. Since they all were armed, I see this as a sort of hit squad, hence the title. I based them on 30mm round display bases from Reaper, and I 3d Printed a 20mm round in a similar style for Toto. Since not only the Tin Man, but also the flying monkey are obvious metal robots, I think “Weird West Oz” or even “Steampunk Oz” would be a more fitting moniker. The miniatures are made in the slightly harder Bonesium, henceforth to be known as Better Bones™. Since the third Bones kickstarter, all Chronoscope Bones are coloured grey, The Flying Monkey, Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow are sculpted by Bob Ridolfi, with Dorothy and Toto by Julie Guthrie. Only the Scarecrow seems to be released in Bones as of yet.
