Here's one with which I wound up pretty happy. Julie Guthrie's Ridley Darkedge, Male Rogue. I even kind of gave him eyes. Sort of. Bit of a flaw around the crown of his head, didn't smooth out right, accidentally totally obscured it in the pictures, and it was beyond my skills as a fixer of minis. Love this sculpt all the same, though. Thanks for looking!

My take on the Pathfinder Red Dragon. I wanted to go for a temple ruin in the middle of the Jungle vibe.
-
Comments, critiques, throwing your brushes at the stage are all appreciated. Started painting up the 89001: Pathfinder Red Dragon by Julie Guthrie from the Bone I Kickstarter. Clean up wasn't too bad. The dorsal fins were a bit tricky to figure out. I stuck the wings and tail in boiling water, shaped them and then dunked them in cold water to set. It ended up taking two nights of forming to get them where I wanted. Painting has caused them to spread slightly but i think some time with summer sun and rubber bands with put them back where I want them after painting. Did some green stuff work on the joints. Some of the scales came out awesome others not so much. In retrospect, if this was a bigger dragon I need to spend a little more time on blending the wing joints. Started out with 09277 Spattered Crimson for the scales shadow. Did a little bit of experimenting with bringing the red off the wing bones into the patagium. Ended up with about 3 thin coats before I moved up to 09278 Gory Red and 09279 Fresh Blood. Threw a little Lava Orange on the patagium and 09143 Yellowed Ivory (bottle says Yellowed bone) just to see how I liked it. before I called it a night. I like how the orange came out, Definitely need to go back a feather out the red and do a better job on getting the orange even. The Yellowed bone came out less yellow than I'd like, going to have to do some experimenting on that. Probably going to purple/grey for the inside the mouth. Thinking about black marble for the skull/stones. Also need to figure out the belly scales, may be some more orange involved.

My ShadowTracker, though I am calling her a SunTracker.

Here is one of my RCon 15 entries, Lon the Chibi Werewolf. Normally I don't go this extreme with base. But I had an idea and had to go with it. Thanks for any C&C you feel inspired to post. For those attending RCon '15, I hope to see you there.

Normally I'd title this a little simpler but Marineal's gorgeous Tiik Champion is nearby and I'd rather people not confuse the two. So this is my Tiik Champion. Nothing fancy about the basing; it's on a 1.5-inch fender washer for extra stability, painted illusionistically like sand. WIP thread here.

I'm painting up some aquatic PCs and monsters for upcoming ocean adventures. I had primed and glued these to fender washers for bases last year, but only just got started painting them. At that time I was priming Bones with a mixed brown of Burnt Umber and Titanium White, then washing over them with Burnt Umber to bring out the details. These days I think using just plain Reaper's Brown Liner is simpler and works better. The two Tiik Warriors are based on one-inch washers and the Champion is on a 1.5-inch washer. One fish-man is going to be greenish. I'm not really basing it on any actual fish species, although I may refer to pictures later. I glazed a pure Iron Oxide Yellow on the bases to begin to build up a sandy color. Then I washed over that with a much less saturated color with a similar value, a fairly complex mixed warm brown a little like a flesh tone.

Whenever I take pictures of my new paint jobs I try to get some snapshots of my older minis too. So here is Rafm 3721 Ice Dragon Yearling, painted in 1994. We didn't like the gaping holes in the wings, so we filled those with putty. You can see the not so great patch job in the photos. And here is Grenadier 9904 Skeletal Dragon sculpted by Julie Guthrie, painted around 1994. It had suffered some damage, so I recently glued it together and patched up the paint job.

I spend less than 2 hours on this guy. He was the practice mini in James Wappel's Advanced Glazing class at ReaperCon this year. The brush that is pictured is the brush used to paint him. Wappel likes using cheap craft brushes since they are affordable and since he gave one that is what I used. This fellow was based and primed whitish by Wappel before class and we spend the class mostly applying glazes or glazes mixed with some thicker colors for things like spots. It was a lot of fun. For those interested in the base, Wappel has a blog post with the process. He also has two posts showing his process on the example minis that he prepainted for the class.

This is an aquatic beast form I'm painting up for a shapeshifting PC. I primed it last year and started painting it last week. My creature had a tendency to topple over backwards, so I glued it to a one-inch fender washer, then primed it with a light brown mixed from Burnt Umber and Titanium White and washed it with thinned-down Burnt Umber (I have since last year changed my priming technique to using straight thinned-down Reaper Brown liner on Bones; much simpler, and obscures less detail). The first thing I did was wash over it with a transparent deep green mixed from Phthalo Green and Burnt Sienna. The color is pretty intense, but it's so transparent it lets the brown show through. I also left the creature brown in some areas. Later I brushed a fairly complex medium green mix (iirc, Phthalo Green, Hansa yellow Opaque, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Iron Oxide, and Titanium White) over parts of the creature, rather roughly, and laid in a sandy yellow color over its base. Later I glazed a very, very little Phthalo Blue (it's a color that overwhelms if one isn't careful) over parts of the creature. Most recently I took a pale mixed green (Phthalo Blue, Hansa Yellow Opaque, and Titanium White) and started laying in more careful highlights and shaping.

This is one of numerous aquatic creatures I'm painting for some oceanic-themed adventures. This one is for a PC. He's from the original Bones Kickstarter. He had a serious tendency to fall over backwards, so I glued him down to a one-inch fender washer. I primed him last year (before I seriously took to Reaper's Brown Liner) with a medium brown mixed from Burnt Umber and Titanium White, then washed pure Burnt Umber over him to pick out the details. The first thing I did was wash over him again with a deep green mixed from Phthalo Green and Burnt Sienna. Then I mixed a paler green from that with an addition of Hansa Yellow Opaque, Yellow Iron Oxide, and Titanium White, and brushed it lightly over the creature as a sort of basic highlight placement. I also washed over the base with a sandy yellow color.

The first of my 12-Days bonus minis to see paint. Julie Guthrie's Kyrie, Female Barbarian. Totally beautiful sculpt. I had a blast with her and was glad I didn't ruin her (any worse than I did, lulz). More of my home-cooking flesh tone on her. I decided to run her to the pale side. Seemed fitting. I tried real eyes, and they turned out terrible. I was pretty happy with how her fur turned out. Thanks for looking. All feedback welcome.

This little fella was a ton of fun. I chose him to practice fur, I'm reasonably pleased with it. The base is from secret weapon. Very nice bases. As always comments and criticisms welcome.

The title says it all I decided to try sheer cloth. I have wanted to try some since I took Rhonda's class for Painting Sheer cloth at Gen Con two years ago, but haven't felt brave enough to actually do it. Well if I want to get better I have to try more things, so here we go. Since this is new to me I figured I would post a WIP for advice and encouragement. Not to mention if I completely mess it up (which I likely will) maybe someone can learn from my mistakes. I already had Sleeping Beauty primed and ready to go I managed to prep her back in January. So last night I painted up her flesh. While my flesh tones were still in the palette I blocked in her sheet with flesh. Here are the photos which since it isn't actually showing any naughty bits I hope they are ok to post. So tonight I grabbed her and glass of wine, and took a photo in true Dontfear fashion. Then onto painting some cloth color. Since I used Burgundy Wine for her skin shadow I felt it would work for her cloth as well and Auberon's Dark Sword Sorceress inspired me to use purple. I mixed in a touch of pale violet and a tiny bit of linen white for the base coat and then took to blocking it in. At this point I googled purple sheer lingerie to get a feel for how purple looks against the skin and took my basecoat and mixed it with fair skin. With a fairly thinned down paint I used this to cover the skin parts to make it look as if a layer of fabric was over it. After this step it figured I better try to blend my mess so I mixed a few steps in between and also a higher step with linen white added to try to bring out the flesh parts a bit more. Here is as far as I got with her tonight. She needs more blending around the flesh parts then I am hoping working shadows and highlights onto the purple will help convey the look of sheer as I am worried now the cloth just looks highlighted rather than sheer. Thanks all for reading and hopefully helping me on this journey of sheer cloth.

Hi again all, Just sharing Sarah, painted by me over the last few weeks. Tried out a simple light box to get a better shot than Agramon (cardboard box version from the link in the Shutterbug forum). I guess we need a better camera. She is sitting on a plastic shot glass (what we mount things on to paint them) simply to fit the angle of the camera better. I must give a shout out to nomad_grrl for the method on the crystal balls. Primer, Sky Blue and a coat of metallic medium was the trick. Thanks in advance for any feedback etc. Cheers!

I tried to use Rhonda Bender's excellent paint job as a guide for my version of Kyrie the Female Barbarian which was a special edition mini from the RAC. I acquired her during the 12 days of xmass. I still have no idea how Rhonda manages to paint those itsy bitsy eyes! Without further rambling I give you my lame attempt at this lovely mini from Julie Guthrie! Comments are always appreciated!

Next up, an old Grenadier mini from the Julie Guthrie's Personalities line. I really love this mini. I wish I could've done it more justice. I imagine this guy as a dragon slayer, for whatever reason. The grungy sort, though, rough and perhaps of noble connections somehow but rather crude. Mean. Not much better than an evil dragon, perhaps. I gave him a mustache. It looked like he was supposed to have a mustache. Anyway, second attempt at basing. Used some flock LittleBluberry sent me in my Secret Sophie package and some rocks I'd gotten a while back. Super simple, but yeah. Thanks for looking!

My Rageclaw Slayer. For some reason I wanted a black lupine in shining armor.

I was photographing something else yesterday. The something else ended badly. I was documenting it. Anyway, the Fire Elemental was nearby and the lighting setup looked promising so I let the camera have a try even though the LFE is notoriously hard to photograph. The Raw Image My phone has a small app on it from Adobe, and it has a selection of preset "effects" filters it can apply. I tried several, saved a few that looked fiery. The Filter That Looked Like Lava A Kind of Spot Lighting? Similar to Above But Darker Hope these are at least fun to look at or maybe inspiration if someone is wanting to paint fire.
