  1. Here's the Relic Knight sculpted by Yannick Hennebo for Kingdom Death which I just finished painting, and I got some great advice in this thread so a thank you goes to the wise men and women who chimed in there. I painted the mini to represent one of the characters in our Pathfinder game (together with the two previous ones I did, Thula and Fidrak). This crazy cat is Tyrax the Slayer, a young man with the blood of a red dragon pumping through him. The thing with this guy is that he will, as he levels up, take on more and more draconic properties; soon (at level 2) he will be able to grow claws, and later on he will get wings, natural armor and breath weapons coming out of every which orifice (he will take the Dragon Disciple prestige class if you're in to Pathfinder). I'm not sure how well you can see it in my photos, but I painted the right hand (which is clawed) to be undergoing draconic transformation. My thought with the mini is that he was perhaps hiding his transformed hand in those bandages, but he is exposed, or something just pisses him off, and he decides to let rip. A mad grin on his mouth, he whips out his sword and shakes his claw free, as pure draconic power erupts like bubbling scars across his skin... To be honest, I'm not... completely happy with the results I got here. The problem I see is that his hair and the cloak are almost the same color, and this is due to me not thinking things through enough. The cloak was basecoated in Mahogany Brown, and then shaded with Blackened Brown and Walnut Brown, followed by highlighting with Chestnut Brown and Rust Brown. The problem was that the exposed highlight areas were so enormous compared to the tight folds where the shades were, so it ended up quite a bit more orange than I had intended. I still think he looks pretty cool though, and I don't have it in me to start over, so he will just have to do. In retrospect, I do think a stronger color scheme would have been a flowing red cloak paired with raven-black hair. Next time! Anyway, hope you like him!

    Kingdom Death Survivor Pinup

One of my January painting goals was to branch out and paint a mini from a company that I had yet to paint a mini from. I chose the Kingdom Death hard plastic pinups in part to see how well their assembly goes and in part to see how durable the hard plastic they're using is. Another goal I had was to try something new, which for January was the Scale75 flesh paint set. For anyone interested in the details you can get them in my WIP. Of course, we're now into February and I've pretty much set the same goals for myself. This time the something new was attempting to paint marble. I ended up going with a white marble with blue-grey and ocher veins. I like how it looks from above, but my freehand on the backside didn't turn out as well. First the 360 view: From above the gold mask and my attempt at "natural" reddish-brown hair: And a few views of how the marbleizing effect turned out. And last a bonus closeup. She was a fun mini to paint. I'll have to find the time to work through the rest of the box, but first I have a quick and easy mini primed and ready to go.
  3. Here's the latest mini from my Meet the Girls WIP thread, the Great Game Huntress:- I got a little carried away making her base! Super pleased with her outfit, and I seem to be getting better at painting short hair. Unfortunately it looks like I've had a few problems with my varnish here and there. Comments and criticisms are, as always, much appreciated.
  4. Here's my recently finished Survivor pin-up from Kingdom Death, along with my Forsaker and Twilight Knight pin-ups who I painted a while ago but never made a Show-off thread for (at least I think I didn't). Survivor:- I could've been a bit neater painting her bikini (stupid shaky hands!), but overall I'm pleased with how she turned out. (WIP thread available here Forsaker:- That basing idea worked so much better in my head! Her hair and cape could've used stronger highlights, but again, I'm pleased with how she looks. Twilight Knight:- Could've put more work into her sword blade, but I think she's the best of the three. So what do you think of the girls so far? Comments and criticisms are, as always, very appreciated.

    A Great Game Hunter Rogue

"As most settlements lack the means to produce food within their fortified walls, hunting is essential to humanities continued existence. Making Hunters some of the most revered and honored members of their community. The same cannot be said of the so-called Rogues. Their preference for working alone, in an age when many lack the courage to even set foot in the wilderness, causes them to be viewed with suspicion and mistrust, their continued survival the result of deals with dark entities rather than natural ability. So Rogues lead a solitary life, traveling from settlement to settlement, staying in one place just long enough to repair their equipment and restock essential supplies." Another Kingdom Death mini finished, his WIP can be found here. Really like how he turned out, it was one of those sculpts that's very easy on my 'colouring-in' painting style, though I really do need to work on my photo skills. Comments and criticisms are, as always, most welcome.
  6. I should be working on my more time sensitive projects, but I can't resist the siren call of starting another Kingdom Death mini, the Rogue:- At the moment he's merely been cleaned, assembled and primed. Tomorrow comes the fun of deciding what colours to assign to his many layers of clothing. I've made a start to his base too:- That fern on the side looks way too much like an ear.

    A Nightmare Ram

"The focus of many a cautionary travellers tale, Nightmare Rams are said to inhabit the wild, lonely parts of the world. Appearing before lost travellers to offer their services as a guide, those who are foolish enough to accept their help are led deeper into the wilderness, never to be seen again. Occasionally, someone will seek out the truth behind these tales. Those who are unlucky to uncover the truth, and lack the strength to resist the strong hypnotic powers the Nightmare Rams possess, soon curse their curiosity, as they are swallowed whole and slowly become one with the Ram, their mind forever trapped along with all the other unfortunate souls the Ram has consumed over the centuries." Been working on this one for a while (as can be seen from the WIP), and I'm super pleased with how it turned out. Comments and critiques are, as always, much appreciated.

    A Nightmare Ram

I've been missing having a WIP, so I'm having another go at one. This time though, I'm just picking one of the minis on my desk to chronicle, this guy:- "Hello there, I'm peculiar looking" Had to break out the green stuff to fill his gaps, first time I've done it and I think I did an okay job. Couldn't work out how to hold him while painting, so I'm getting him based first. However. He's a bit too big for his base, plus sticking to my Kingdom Death theme of having a statue head on the base somewhere really didn't help, but I got something cobbled together:- But then, disaster! When I started gluing the cork on, I couldn't get anything back in place, so I re-worked it on the fly:- Just waiting for the green stuff to dry, then it's sand time!

    Warrior of the Sun (Male)

Here is the second Warrior of the Sun that I got to paint up. After reading the fluff, I decided to take a Shadow Dancer style approach, and gave parts of his flowing robes a starscape effect. I feel like this worked out rather well for him in the end, and the lanterns on his belt were placed pretty well for a localized OSL effect. I've got to say, I'm really impressed with Kingdom Death's sculpting and resin casting. Here's hoping the plastics look just as good. I've stuck him up on CMON for anyone who cares to vote.

    Warrior of the Sun

Here is my interpretation of Kingdom Death's Warrior of the Sun. When I looked over the fluff around this character, I realized that she's sort of a Shadow Dancer, and I created the starscape on her robes to represent this. Kingdom Death definitely has some wonderful sculptors working on their resin line- the details were stellar and the mini was a joy to paint. It is a shame that they're pretty much never in stock, but here's hoping the plastic versions look just as good in person as they do in the pictures. Overall, I was very happy with how she turned out.
  11. 'He cannot give into hopelessness, he must save his people whatever the cost.' These are the thoughts that continue to push him in his fight against a great evil, an evil that destroyed both him and his people long ago... Still can't take decent pictures. Any ways, I present my latest mini Kingdom Deaths Gold Smoke Knight (I started working on him about here in my WIP thread), didn't quite turn out how I envisioned it (I wanted him to be a bit battered looking, but didn't have the guts to tackle any weathering), but I'm still really happy with how he turned out. All comments or criticisms greatly received.

    Grand Mother- Kingdom Death

Aw, what the heck, I haven't posted in show-off in about a month. Here's Kingdom Death's Grand Mother. I have to say, she's a freaky model. I used some secret weapon skulls on the base. I also tried out a new steel recipe. The hardest part was pinning those darn wings. Enjoy!
  13. Painting Death Nov 2013 - Jan 2014 edit: The Results! The challenge: 1. Paint any Kingdom Death model. Completely open challenge, keep it simple or go nuts. No restrictions on basing or modification, but do restrict it to Kingdom Death models. The object is to paint up some KD in advance of the release of Kingdom Death: Monster. 2. (optional) Include a short paragraph of prose about your entry. 3. Post your entry to this thread by midnight CST on January 20, 2014. Anyone can enter at any time before this deadline. After the deadline I will set up a poll to see who wins the exciting no-prize. Because there is no prize! If for some reason we get a better than expected turnout, I could re-consider a prize of some sort. Please, no chatter on this thread, entries only! If you have questions or need help, please post in the discussion thread. If there is nudity (or borderline nudity ala the White Speaker's straps), please provide a link to your photos rather than embedding them in your entry post. Reaper is a family-friendly forum. Thanks! Thanks to Inarah for the format of this post!
  14. So The Inner Geek brought up an interesting idea in my Workbench thread. I've been needing a kick in the pants to start painting my Kingdom Death stuff, and Trystan can use a kick in the butt to finish painting his I hope we can get enough people to make this interesting. I think setting it up like the Beauty Pageant would be easiest unless there is enough interest to maybe solicit judges. One idea would be to group paint the same model, again ala Inarah's Pageant. Given the subject matter, the most disturbing things are out for the Reaper forums. Also, no T though I'm not sure where the line is for A, given there is some cheek but most wear bottoms of some sort (if we go the pinup route). Which is another consideration, I think we should stay away from the first release limited edition stuff and stick to general release, or maybe currently available models (which means mostly pinups). Looking over my drawer, and skipping models that fall into the aforementioned prohibited categories, here's my preliminary list of candidates (I have dupes of the 1st run saviors and TKs, if there's enough interest in those..): Female Survivor (not 1st) Forsaker (not 1st) Flower Knight (not 1st) Dung Beetle Knight (still available) Pinup Great Game Hunter Pinup Savior (yeah, Trys is almost done with this one) Pinup Survivor 54mm Pinup Twilight Knight Another route could be just painting whatever strikes your fancy or having people pick/vote for what they want to see us paint from our lists. We also need to look at timelines, taking care to avoid other contests. I'm thinking of running it fairly soon given holiday time is good for some of us to paint. Balancing not being strict about deadlines (eh, no prizes but bragging...but if we get enough interest I'll approach Poots) vs enough deadline to make us push through it. I'd definitely like to have one of these in my case when I hit ReaperCon. I'm really intimidated as I've never prepped or painted resin before, and I really hadn't intended cracking these open until I had been painting a few years. So I hope we can get a bunch of people to join in!
  15. So, I'm working on the Savior pin-up from Kingdom Death. If I finish her in time, I'll enter her into the Painting Death contest. Pics are linked for probable NSFW-ness. As you can see, she needed a little filling on the top of her head. There were probably some air bubbles in the mold. Whatever. It's Poots Magic™. .

    Twilight Knight - Kingdom Death

I intend to reshoot the pics, this was a quick shoot before anything else broke on it...I had a few more things to paint and tweak but the sword broke in a pretty bad place and the trophy is precariously glued in, so I'm not sure how much more I want to fool with it. WIP here
