Hello everybody, here's another of my marble extravaganza for Halloween. This is 77539, Gravestone of Protection sculpted by Julie Guthrie.

Hey everyone, here is another model on which I practiced marble painting as an alternative to regular stone. This 77634, Graveyard Statue was sculpted by Bob Ridolfi.

Since even cultists love fashion, I went with purple marble on this one. This is the Bones version of the 77139, Altar of Evil sculpted by Bob Olley.

Hey everyone, here's another sarcophagus I painted for an upcoming D&D session. This one is the 77632, Sarcophagus sculpted by Bob Ridolfi.

So how do I paint something with a marble effect? I have a sepulcher or sarcophagus, primed light grey, and I want to paint it like it was made from marble. Any ideas or tricks? Colors? Anything? Bueller? If it helps, its the one from the Horror subset of the Bones 4 Kickstarter.

I’ve struggled with a good marble in the past. There is room for improvement but it’s finally looking like marble. For anyone trying to learn this technique, start with green marble. It seems to be more forgiving.

If you don't mind, carry on! https://imgur.com/a/CTFu53W From Bones 4 I purchased Dance of Death, Blacksting Wyvern and one set of the Amazon Living Statues. Here is my first Living Statue, I aimed for a tan marbled stone look. The miniature has a gloss varnish that really adds to the polished marble feel to it. Pretty happy with the result! The non-damaged statue (2nd of the pair) I'm hoping to try out a dark green marbled stone effect, with lighter green up to white veins. I think on the back side of the miniature's body I didn't quite keep the angled veins in mind. I turned myself around a bit in my head trying to imagine how veins would look in a 3 dimensional block of stone, haha. I aimed for the full statue to look as if it was carved from the same piece (which would make the sculptor a very impressive person!). Lots of fun with this model and I like the sculpt a lot. I think the breasts feel a little over-sexualized to my preferences, though I find the buttocks to be more in line with my personal experiences of life. Shrug. : ) BTW do the Living Statues have a Reaper Code yet? I'd like to add this to the aggregate thread but I can't find what the reaper code might be (I assume with them being new additions they might not have them yet?)

Hi everyone, it's been some time. It's been hard for me to find some time to paint lately. I'm working on my Cat Critter display base as much as I can, a little every night. So, I thought some of you might like to see part of my progress. Here are part of the statues and "collapsed" pillars that will be decorating the display diorama. The lions are Reaper Miniatures 77341, sculpted by Geoff Valley. The collapsed pillars are 72591, Wizkids. I cut them to separate the blocs and painted them in white marble colors. There are veins of quartz and gold in the marble. As you can see, I glued the lions tail on their back to make them look more like statues. The lions are mounted on 74012, 25 x 50mm cavalry base.

When I got my Bones III Obsidian Crypt I had a little idea. https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/crypt/latest/77637 I put Kaladrax ( now Discontinued) on it. She made it her throne! I also included some pieces of the Bones III Graveyard Set, and a few other pieces I had laying around. One statue is broken because Kaladrax swung her tail when she landed. I made some roses with the basing stuff @knarthex had send me a while ago. Also my first real attempt at marble. I made red marble and white/yellow marble for the Crypt. I finished up the Obsidian Crypt from Bones 3's Graveyard expansion. Used a fair amount of spray paint on this one, as I found that it didn't interact as badly with the harder Bonesium than it does with the regular stuff. I also used a bit of blue painter's tape to keep various areas protected, and wound up making use of a marbling spray to get the effect I wanted, and I'm pretty happy with it. It worked best on the floor rather than the walls, but I'm satisfied with it overall. I haven't glued any of the walls together, because it makes it easier to use as terrain or display. I also mounted some magnets in the floor, and glued some nails into the open areas in the walls so that the whole thing stays together better. It was my first real attempt at using magnets in miniatures, and I'm pretty excited about it.

Young Swamp Dragon "Copper Dragon on Marbled Tiled Hex Base" At the monthly Paint Day I host in Seneca Falls, NY ... Finger Lakes Paint and Game Day ... a Reaper forumite came up for a visit from down near NYC. He brought with him some great pieces of marble tiles that were left over from a floor installation. These tiles are 3/8 inches thick and one inch to a side hexagons of white marble. He gave me several before he left to return home. Not long after that day, I decided to utilize one of his amazing pieces of marble for the Reaper Miniatures Young Swamp Dragon, sculpted by Kevin Williams, that had been sitting in his blister pack on the wall above my work table. But I wanted to really utilize the gleaming white marble and pay an homage to the base. So using plastic squares as individually placed tiles I set out to make a marble floor on top of the marble base. The base turned out wonderfully. But what kind of dragon was I interested in painting? I certainly wasn't interested in making him a "swamp" dragon. After some thought and a comparison of size to some of my other dragons, I decided he would be a copper dragon. But that led to the idea that the copper dragons would molt their skins like lizards and snakes. This molting would in fact take the form of verdigris (copper rust) and form around the outside of the dragon as it slept for long periods. I set out to create a verdigris combination of paints to paint on his wings and underbelly. But after some conversations with other artists and a specific comment from the provider of the marble tile, I decided the dragon was shaking off his molt and scattering bits of the verdigris around the floor and that his wings were still not finished molting and that hardened bits were still attached to the dragon. Decided to start a project based on a piece Knarthex gave me at Paint Day last Saturday. It was a neat piece of white marble in the shape of a hexagon that was intended to be used for floor tiles. One side of the hex is glued to string webbing that would keep a sheet of them together and spaced correctly. So, I put the smooth side down and cleaned the back webbing off the edges and contemplated the piece and what minis I have waiting for bases. I chose the P-65 Heavy Metal Young Swamp Dragon I've been saving since Reaper cleared out their lead for Bones. So, I decided to apply little plastic squares as tile work. I left the alignment rough as I will rough em up and age them. The web backing will keep the basing materials secured to the smooth marble. Here's a pic... Next, drying glue and sawing lead.

So I was asked to do a tutorial on how I painted the marble on my Coraldrax [seen here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/54577-coraldrax-sea-kaladrax/ ] like I did with my tutorial on painting rust: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/56249-siris-guide-to-painting-rust/ So here we go! This isn't going to be as good as my rust tutorial I think, it's using acrylics [since that's how I did it on Coraldrax, and I wanted to show how I did that] and really on Coraldrax it's barely visible underneath him, so I didn't worry about doing a pretty job with it. However, I think it can easily be done with hobby paints instead of craft, and be done much nicer than the way I do it, by using the same basics as i'll show below So I decided to use two flat surfaces, which are two half objective markers from my Secret Weapon Bag O' Crap and another base from the same Bag O' Crap that could pull off the marble look and actually has texture The colors I use are white, a light gray, a medium gray, and a very very dark green called Wrought Iron. I have black there as well, but I didn't use it My first step is to cover them completely in the medium gray color Then you use white and streak in the same direction. I usually go from one corner to the opposite corner. Don't be worried if the lines are fuzzy or blotchy or thick. Marble is seldom symmetrical and perfect, and this is just the base coat you're applying Now I break out my light grey and do the same thing, streaking in the same direction. This helps clean up your white lines a bit, and blend them a bit better so it's not so stark This next step will look very messy. Don't get discouraged! You're going to use a very small brush and your dark color. In my case, that is Wrought Iron. Your'e going to make spidery veins in the same direction as your streaking [you will notice I screwed up on one of my objective markers and went against the streaks >.< ] You'll want to dip your brush often, because plenty of paint means it doesn't get fuzzy edges. We want lots of crisp lines Now you'll go back to your light grey and white. I tend to mix them in even parts, and then dry brush it over the entire thing. At this stage, you don't HAVE to follow the streaking, but I still do anyways just because. This makes the veins fade Using pure white, we streak once more. Be careful not to entirely cover up your faded veins of dark color Now you're going to apply dark veins once more. You'll want them very thin, very crisp. If you look at pictures of marble, you'll see plenty of them have both faded and crisp lines through them And you're done! A final seal gets us our final marble look. As I said, a bit messy, a bit imperfect...but I'm sure with this tutorial you can get the basic marble look down and then improve on my own technique =) Finished markers: Finished little base:

So I finished the Bones version of Vanja. I also tried a few backdrops ( just printouts from the internet). Hope you like her. EDIT: forgot to mention this earlier, don't know if it shows well in the pics. The armor is red mixed with silver to get a metallic look, later i added more silver for the highlight parts. And with a more neutral back drop. I'm new to this...must make a lightbox soon. These were made in the garden.

Last night was the first night in a while that I haven't HAD to go back to work. Not the first night I've not bothered to go back to work. There's a difference. I'm salaried, so when work needs to get done ... you go and do it ... unless you are physically exhausted, then you take a nap and then you go and do it. So, last night I delved back into my dungeon workshop and set to cleaning the clutter that occurs over time and setting the work space back to "cleared" and workable. The dungeon, or basement, suffered some flooding a while back so I had to move stuff off the floor and move stuff from soaked cardboard boxes to plastic tubs, etc. Clutter ensued and it's been a while since I had the time to make it right. In the midst of all this I see a mini I made a while ago ... sitting atop my brush stand ... he's an Illithid or Mindflayer from D&D (11-406 Mindflayer from Ral Partha). I painted the figure some time ago as a mindflayer lich. I gave him a bone white head with sickly tentacles (I know, they are already sickly looking but these are purply and dead looking though animated). As a more elaborate base I placed him on top of a "bowl of blood" which overflows to the ground below it and dubbed him a Blood Lich, whatever that means. Anyway, after looking at him for a few and then returning to working on clearing things I decided his "bowl" still looks to much like a bottle cap and needs more to make it look like an altar of blood. So I sit down and and consider the possibility of adding some clay/green stuff to the front of the "bowl" and making it more of an altar. After a moment, I clear a notch of the cap so that I can place a toothpick piece flat against the metal underneath and then dig out a notch in the sand/glue/paint below it and glue the first support in place. Then after a little fussing with matching angles, etc. I get a second strut in place on the opposite side. I have a conversation at this point, an internal monologue if you will, "What do I want to do with this as a miniature? Am I going to leave it a 'monster' for the players to chase and kill? Or do I want to do something more with it?' And after a period of internal debate I decided to make a full diorama for the figure ... perhaps with the Blood Lich still removable and playable as a game piece. Initial Layout I pull out a faux marble block, five inches square and nearly half an inch tall and start arranging slate pieces and the lich until I have him on a stone stair leading to an outcropping over the rest of the base. Looks cool. Play with the pieces until I have them just right and then mark the pieces against each other and number them from the ground up for reassembly later. Rearranged Selection on Black Faux Marble I think it has a lot of potential now. Just have to do some sculpting. I think I will mix a variety of sculpting materials to achieve the finished effect. So the next perplexing thing ... what is the Blood Lich doing on his altar of blood out over oblivion ... or a sea of fire or a lake of blood. Do I put a sacrificed corpse out on a rock below him? Do I use one of the Haunts from the Kickstarter Bones I got? Oh, I could do both and have the haunt coming from the chest of the victim. I have a few old demons the Lich could be summoning from below. Layout with the Bones Haunt in place Post thoughts on what I should do next. We'll see where this diorama leads. Not sure this is in the right spot on the forum, but it'll work. I plan to go through step-by-step a marble effect, so this may be picture-heavy. I'll also include some alternative patterns after the step-by-step, so if anyone has a color request or marble style request let me know! I'm not attached to any particular marble. Except maybe the pretty ones. I found these marble tutorial resources helpful: Chest of Colors Massive Voodoo Oz Painters First I made a marble base out of sculpey: Once it was baked, I primed it using a combination of gray and white. Gray for the recesses/grout areas, and white for the marble surface. I used a fairly dry brush with the white primer to just cover the surface of the tiny edging tiles. Hmmn... now it looks like a little window icon. Sigh. Ignore the cartoony base. It will be painted! Right now I'm tentatively leaning towards this marble pattern, but this is as far as I got, so request alternatives if you want! I got it by searching google images for white marble.
