Made from the "Mashaaf" and "Great Cthulhu" figures, here's my interpretation of Crom Cruach, the Celtic fertility god who demanded the sacrifice of a third of the children and whom St.Patrick allegedly vanquished:

I years of thinking about it, I bought an airbrush system last week. I've never airbrushed before and everything I've seen says to take it slow and plastic before using it on a model, but I'm too impatient for that. I started with the Bones Rats. Then moved to the Bones Deep Ones Then experimented with shading using the Bones Spawn of Shugniggurath. Then went big with the Bones Mashaaf. Its actually harder to learn than I expected. Luckily I have lots of Bones to practice on.

Hi, Here is my first painted mini from Bones 3: the "Great Maw". I really love the size and weight of this "miniature" (not sure if we can still cal it "mini"). Most of the paint was done with washes on simple black and white primer. I added some high gloss varnish and some 2 part epoxy glue in some places for added slime effect. C&C Welcome. And at least, now, my Mashaaf has a friend to terrorize players with:

Ok this took me a very long time to do. I hope you enjoy but some background first. Mashaaf is one of my favorite miniatures from bones 2 and I was eager to paint her up. I couldn't settle on a color for the skin and nothing looked right. I ended up repainting her 4 times and figured I'd go down with the ship this time and this is how she turned out. Not to bad if I do say so myself.

I did some reorganizing of my painting desk over the weekend and thus finally pulled out the lightbox that my friend gave me for my birthday back in August. So I took a few pictures of Mashaaf (ok, a lot of pictures ) so I thought I should do a show off thread for her. I have some time off of work with the impending holiday so as always, it's a perfect opportunity to chuck my marbles out the window and take on a paint slopping challenge! Who wouldn't want to take on a challenge set forth by a purple kitty? So here are the roolz: 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 5 is right out. Once the size 0, being the correct number, be reached, then lobbest thy size 0 brush towards thy foe, who being made of Bones, shall be painted. 2) 5 full days (120 consecutive hours) from when the timer starts are all the time that is allowed in this challenge; whether that time is spent working, sleeping, painting or sobbing uncontrollably is up to the participant. 3) Boiling and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited. 4) The timer starts with the posting of a picture of Mashaaf and my intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing my local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 5 days (120 consecutive hours) later or whenever I complete the task prior to time running out. You guys know how I roll. I'm not even slightly prepared for this (or am I? ) as my life is a slow crawl of constant disasters. My desk is as much of a wreck as my brain. I did, however, actually take Mashaaf out of her little baggie and dry-fit her though! But she needs some serious boiling if she's ever going to stand upright. And I'm still at work and will be for several hours. So my best guess is that I'll probably be officially starting on her tonight somewhere around 7 or 8pm CST!

Welcome, welcome, one and all, to the very first Purple Cat Challenge! Most of you are probably familiar by now with the 7 day Goblin Challenge; the one where you can only use brushes Size 0 or smaller, and being kinda crazy is a common prerequisite. If you haven't heard of this madness before, here's the official rules, and here's where the insanity all began. Now, after completing two of them, I've become rather fond of these challenges, and how they've stretched me to my limits and beyond as a painter. Something I've definitely noticed, though, is that while the Goblin Challenges are Legendary Feats (not exaggerating), they may never be feasible for responsible folks with jobs and families and what-not. So, this fact, plus buglips' attempt to paint Cthulhu in 2 days, plus my realization that there are other cool BIG minis that need painting, all crashed into each other and resulted in...a mess. But! What came out of that mess was the idea of the Purple Cat Challenge. This will consist of smaller BIG minis that will still be challenging to complete in 5 days, but are both more affordable and hopefully more approachable to those not able to devote a solid week to tiny brushes and sanity loss. Mashaaf will be the first, and I can confirm that Cthulhu will be the second. I have a good idea of the other models I'd like to include, but would like to paint them up first to determine whether they are good candidates or not. I don't have as much painting experience as buglips, so my initial assessment of whether a model would be a good challenge may be off, and I'd hate for someone to try one only to have it be ridiculously easy or impossibly difficult. :) SO! Without further ado, here are Da Roolz*: 1. You may use no brushes larger than Size 0. As Size 0 can vary by company and brand, the average bristle dimensions are 10mm long by 1mm wide. When selecting brushes, try to be as close to this guideline as possible. 2. You have 5 full days to complete from your posted start time (including a picture with a time stamp from a phone or computer screen is helpful to establish this) to complete the model. 3. All visible areas must be painted, and all paint must be applied with a regulation brush. 4. No drilling, filing, mold line removal or other prepwork is permitted before start time. The only preparation allowed is to dry fit your pieces to make sure the model is complete, and do any boiling and reshaping necessary to correct warpage and return the model to "factory spec". You may also clean the pieces with soap and water. 5. All pieces as included in the box set at retail must be painted. This would include, for example, the 5 adventurer figures included with Dragons Don't Share 2. 6. You must declare in your thread title that you are doing a 5-day challenge (ex: Mashaaf in 5 Days; Cthulhu in 5 Days). This way your thread gets noticed as a challenge so I can watch the fun and make arrangements for the prize** if you succeed. 7. Eligible models for the challenge are: Mashaaf, Cthulhu. More will be added as eligibility is determined. *Essentially, the Purple Cat Challenge roolz are exactly the same as the Goblin Challenge roolz, save for the models that are allowed (currently only Mashaaf and Cthulhu), and that the participant will have FIVE days instead of seven. **NOTE: Any (non-monetary, unaffiliated with Reaper) completion prizes will be contingent on availability and finances. I will at the very least mail you a pretty certificate. Let's get this party started! I painted this up a few months ago. I've still been meaning to flatten out the base and paint it but here is everything so far. I had a lot of fun with this one.

Kind of making this up as I go, not really sure what I'm doing. Usually I plan color schemes ahead of time but I'm winging this one I might go whiter on the fleshy parts, and a bit more brown on the 'shell'

My take on Mashaaf, as a Broodmother defending her slimy clutch! The spots along her side are supposed to be photophores to glow in the dark caverns, pin points of light to lure prey to her maw. I was doing home remodeling and was self-exiled from my home and paint desk for over two months, so when I got access to my hobby room and paint desk and reorganized, I collected all my unfinished projects on the desk and realized my shelf of shame had grown to unacceptable proportions. I decided to tackle finishing as many of these pieces just to get them off my desk before I move on, even if I speed paint them or cut steps, but I am tired of looking at too many primed-only or part painted minis. So here is the first wave: Mashaaf which was my favorite to paint among these, the bones mummy lich I had nearly finished six months ago, which was nice except had too soft details on the face, the Scibor elven ruins, Mega Miniatures pack mules I base coated two years ago, and some GriffinTamer terrain pieces. These are not my best work by far but I'm going to call them done for now to get them off my desk and maybe some day I will go back and add some more finishing touches.

I finally finished painting old maggot-breath, Bones 77375: Mashaaf. It's a big figure, which made it a bit tricky to handle while painting. In the first photo, I've included a figure of your friendly neighbourhood psycho-killer and vivisectionist for scale. Just in case you haven't already seen it, I kept a work-in-progress blog here.

I've made a start on Mashaaf, a gigantic maggot-like abomination that came with the Bones II Kickstarter. It's a big lump of plastic, roughly 90 x 100 x 150 mm, and quite difficult to handle; I'm not really looking forward to trying to paint it. I can only imagine how difficult it would be to manage something like this in pewter. It needs quite a bit of filling between the sections, but no more than would normally be expected with a miniature of this size. I haven't (yet) filled around its arm-sockets; that may not be necessary (I hope). It's supposed to have a sort of panel-mandible on either side of its maw, but I was sent two of the same side and so one of them doesn't fit the moulded socket. I've filled both sockets, and I'll decide later on whether or not I want to try to mount the panels with pins. I may just leave them off entirely. Also, there are a couple of smaller sockets moulded at the sides of the tentacly mouth section; I have no idea what they're supposed to be for and I certainly didn't get anything in the package that could go there. I've filled those sockets as well.

Well this my take on the Mashaaf figure. Mashaaf the Devourer of Worlds. ~She is One of the Great old ones from the outer planes. Her home is a deep chasm in the bowls of the earth. She only surfaces to feed during great cataclysmic events or when called upon by her followers with a horrific ceremony. Legends say she feeds on the nightmares of people during times of strife.~ The figure to me looks to be a amalgamation of Slug, Maggot, Caterpillar, Spider and maybe some Crab. I tried to make it look as though her top was possibly a hard surface the stone fused to it. I also tried to make the belly portion look slimy and light emitting like a glow worm. I also wanted to try and make it look like she had purple internals partially showing through her skin, but wasn't able to figure out how to do it. In the process I have about 8 coats of various paints on the belly. So I just went with stripes for coloration contrasts. Also the glow effect I tried on the base doesn't show to well in the photos but it is obvious when looking at it. I'm still learning and developing my skills and being my 3rd figure to do since my long (25+ years) break from painting I like it. Was fun painting and putting the base together. Also I am using a tablet for my camera and no light box. Still trying to figure out how to take good pictures too. 3 different front views hoping you can see the glow and eyes. First time ever doing multicolored eyes effect. 2 side views for the back detail. Its another perspective on the figure. I brought to the game room and the guys liked it and can't wait to see it used in a game. C&C always appreciated. Joe

Today, I had fun getting through my Bones 2 minis bonanza and decided to tackle Mashaaf the Great Old One. I didn't have any particuliar scheme in mind except that I wanted it to be gross and slimy (my wife shrieks when seeing it so I guess it worked...) I also used this as an opportunity to try using my airbrush for something else than just base coating my minis. I just love the sheer size and weight of this 'miniature' (not sure if the term is still accurate for it) Introducing Mashaaf, the Friendly Grub. Mashaaf started as a regular lawn grub who, due to warpstone consumption, grew much larger than the other ones. Because of his size it was always hard for him to find friends to play with. So he roamed his cave always smiling his big toothy maw, hoping someone would play Hide and seek with him. The daring Sir Forscale, out and about on one of his quests, found the giant grub and friendship ensued. Until snack time...

I am pleased as punch to have received my Bones II kickstarter. I do have one quick question for anyone out there. Does Mashaaf have a right arm and a left arm, or are both identical? If the former, then I may have gotten two left arms. I remember that a few of the models from Bones I had the same problem- so it might be worth checking a few before they go out. Thanks!
