So, a looooooong time ago, I painted this as a gift to my then-girlfriend (now wife), known to a few around here as Nissiana: Then the 54mm "Master Series" came out. Nissiana picked up the Monique DeNoir figure and painted a stellar monochrome version as a gift for me. Around the same time (shortly after the model was released, so early 2008), I picked up the 54mm counterpart of the above figure, Maria Roseblade. I intended at the time to paint her as a gift to Nissiana...and I started painting her. Got a few basecoats, even. Then, other projects for games, contests, etc. cropped up and Maria was sidelined. It's been a running joke ever since, as Nissiana knows about the intended gift. So, before mid-March 2018, I want to finish this up. Here's where we are: I want to follow the oxblood leather/blue top ideas of the original figure, but the light blue piping is getting replaced with ivory lace. I'm also happy with where I left a lot of the skin, so I don't need to repaint much. But there's plenty left to do! The white patch on her thigh is greystuff, required for some gap filling. Here we go!

I haven't done a WIP here in a while, except for the occasional exchange piece, so I decided to give one a go and see if I keep up with it. Those of you that follow the "Getting to Know Each Other" thread will remember this piece, but for the rest here's a quick recap. We were asked to try something new. As I don't sculpt I decided to try my hand at something simple. Enter the Master Series Ellen Stone that I received in the Secret Sophie exchange. While she is a hot cowgirl, she is unfortunately not wearing a hot cowgirl shirt. I made her one, though I did run into a bit of a problem. You see, Ellen has a bandana wrapped around her neck and I thought I could work around it. Turns out that I couldn't (though an expert would have likely managed), and so she ended up with the collar on one side being a bit off. She's still good enough to paint and experiment with so here we go. This is what Ellen looks like after a bit of green stuff. You can see where the knot on the bandana got in my way. I should have pressed the collar down a bit more as well, but live and learn. and here is why. Proper style of shirt. I considered it likely that the hat would get in the way of painting her eyes so I left it off to start. I also added three buttons onto her shirt. They are heroic scale buttons, which is why they are a little larger than normal. So i started with blocking in a lot of the colors just to cover the white primer. Her duster is an excuse to try out the Scalecolor Fantasy & Games line of paint that I picked up a few months back. First impression - Blackert Brown is not a good color for basecoating, even over plain white. It took a few too many coats for solid coverage. With a good bit of the primer covered I moved on to the eyes. You can always make a pretty good argument that zenithal lighting + hat = no dots in the eyes but it seems to be the thing to do with minis. I guess everyone now is just used to seeing stage lighting and camera flashes (as the girl above). Of course, tiny white dots never end up in the right place on the first attempt. So we have to fix them. I touched up a few places while I was at it. Turns out that my old basecoating brush doesn't have quite the point that it used to. It still holds a lot of paint but the precision isn't there anymore. One last thing to do before attaching her hat is to get some color on her face. I put a shadow directly under the brim but did the cheeks and below in a fairly standard manner. Her face needs some more work but I decided it was good enough to stop and attach her hat. With the eyes done I seem to be able to reach the rest, and I don't want to call her face "done" and then screw it up gluing the last piece on. I don't have any major plans for tomorrow (beyond continuing to watch basketball) so I expect to make some good progress.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum, but have been following a few threads for painting help and inspiration. I'm currently working on painting my first two models after following a number of tutorials (Hot Lead, Forums etc.), and I'm using the Master Series Core Colors Set #1 (108 paints) which is a fantastic set and has pretty much all I need as a beginner. I've got quite a few minis that I plan to paint, and I can't help but wonder what I'm missing with some of the other MSP sets, particularly this one: https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/paint%20set/sku-down/09957 Does this effectively "complete" the entire MSP collection of colours following Set #1? Are there additional colours and sets that have been released since then? Also, generally speaking, what does this set add to Set #1 in terms palette and products? It'd be nice if there was a breakdown for each of Reaper's paint set offerings, to understand completely what they contain, what they add to your arsenal (complimenting other sets, general purpose or specific function) etc. I'd love to know what I'm missing and where else I should invest in expanding my paint collection. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Also I'll post some WIP soon (although I'm close to complete so I may just post the final result). Cheers! -Finn

Right. This project has been kicking my butt, but I'ma gonna kick it back! The idea originally was to use Monique from the master series minis range and do something involving a bunch of critters attacking on her command. I gave up on that because I didn't feeling like that much sculpting. Then I remembered I also had Magnus. Hmmmn, I thought. I do love that Dire Straits song "Romeo and Juliet" I can just see the scene now... ...finds a convenient streetlight (check, I can make that), steps out of the shade (oooh, paint a backdrop doorway?) and says... well, you know how it goes. So, the downside is Magnus is a teeny bit smaller than Monique. Never fear, I said. I can just do some forced perspective, move him more to the foreground and up on a set of steps and put some vines/plants in front of Monique to make her look smaller. I'll also do some fun contrast with the colors and OSL on him to make him stand out more. That'll work. What this has done though, is made me work with a larger space than I wanted and do a heck of a lot of styrene scenery. sigh. Plus, his sword? Not very romantic to be holding a sword while courting. I can sculpt a little heart shaped box of chocolates though. Hmmmn. At any rate, enough talk. Pics! instead of the bouquet I'll probably just do a single rose and have the bouquet at her feet. You can see the size issue. Also, let me just say, it would have been so much easier for me to resculpt his face first. I spent about 2 hours trying to get the expression changed into the dopey almost-tangled smoulder and ended up carving off his eyebrows in the process. It'll pass, but I still need to fiddle with it. this was my first mock-up and sketch for the background. Behind him I'll paint a doorway and wall. I set the pillar of evil in place of Magnus since he's less fully painted. see my cute chocolate box? That was fun to make. The lantern I made out of styrene and spent the rest of the weekend getting the glue off my fingers. kindof the plan anyway. But I'm not liking the background at all. I knew it just wasn't right. so I re-planned as I painted. I'll add in a fence in the background with gravestone and some ruins. Much spookier. The only thing I'm not set on is the tree right now. I'll need to change the shape and move it back father and put something else in the foreground. But i'm using the same colors for her mini. I'm debating taking all the brushstrokes out and making it smooth versus my typical style which is to be much looser and more impressionistic. Right now it's all just sketched in with paint. I'll say on composition for pieces like this, I think about the flat space as having a fore, middle and background. Most paintings divide these up not completely evenly. I tend to put a "horizon" either significantly under or just a bit under the center of the space, leaving my fore and middle ground to share less than half the real estate. I think this balances nicely for the most part. Anyway, more soon. I'm going to try to make significant progress this weekend.

Finally finished this gorgeous model. Been a very long time since I've painted anything over 28mm scale, and I thoroughly enjoyed the change Overall, really pleased with how she came out :D Base details. Kept the extra detailing like the leaves to a minimum to avoid overwhelming her Went with a purpleish skin tone to emphasize her not being human

I've had this figure sitting in her box for the better part of a fortnight, and I've been eyeing her on the site for many months more, so I'm glad I've finally had the chance to start her I've not done much yet, but I'd thought I'd start this thread early to keep me focused on doing the best job I can with her So yes, she's been sat like this for a while Spent a little while cleaning her up with a knife and some fine grain paper, and glued the sub sections together Then I undercoated her with white spray, and couldn't resist test fitting her together Next up is hiding the mold line in her hair, which is going to be... interesting As I said, not done much yet, but I'll keep this updated as I go ^^;

So I have been painting a bit off and on for a couple of years now and I have some parts of the triads but I don't think I actually have a full triad. In your opinion which Triads are the most important must have completed triads that Reaper sells? This is for the starting painter that needs to get some paints and only really has the funds to get the most used stuff. Edited to add: Sorry that I forgot to mention I have over 70 different paints right now just no full triad sets.

Hello all and thank you for your help. I feel like this has probably been covered, but I couldn't find specifically what I'm looking for so please excuse me asking. If there is already a thread you could direct me to that would be excellent as well. I am going to get into miniature painting and have decided that my best bet to get started would be to go through the Reaper Learn To Paint Kits 1-5. These come with a number of colors already, but I am interested in what (if any) colors people suggest adding to the collection of paint included in the kits. I can list the paints below organized by triad. Colors listen in parenthesis are not included in the collection, but are part of a color triad of an included color. I'm not sure if that's a good way to go or not as I understand the concept of triads and base, shadow, highlight principals, but not the application. You also get some duplicates which I will list how many. Information from this thread, which I then re-organized and reformatted to make it easier to read and cut out duplicates (IMO) thanks to Ced1106, with a few corrections on names. What I'm mostly interested in are the following: -Autumn themed colors like Red, Yellow, Gold, Brown. I feel like I might be good on brown with what's included and Palomino gold might work great for turning leaves as well? What about a fall red and yellow though? I just love the look of fall and I would really like to get some great fall themed miniature armies going, much similar to this bloodydrakes amazing circle of oboros army. -Red seems pretty lacking too, maybe the Fire triad to get a nice orange as well? this kind've ties into the Fall theme I want to get going for a tabletop army. -Yellow. Any suggestions for another nice yellow or will sunlight yellow (which I like the look of a lot) be good enough for all my yellow needs. -Metallics. Some of my favorite colors are metallic Bronze and Copper, but any suggestions between Ancient Bronze, Coppery Orange, Scorched Metal, Old Bronze, Tarnished Brass? I'm looking for a cleanish looking color like gold, but a bit darker and more reddish/brown. Too many options :) -Forest greens. I'm quite surprised by the lack of greens, Grass and Leaf sound useful enough, but is there a preference between Forest/Pine green for a darker color or a different suggestion? -Liners, I don't know much about liners, but I keep hearing people say they are important. Is there a certain color I should get besides the Blue/Brown? Really anything that you more experienced painters found the L2PKs lacking in or consider a good stepping point once you graduate from the kits. Thanks!

What are Reaper's intentions for new 54mm master series miniatures. I have a lot of great ideas for them, but i dont know if Reaper is still doing them or how to even submit my idea. Thank you, Rattatusk
