I did a Nagendra Swordsman for RCL in January based on the blue pit viper. It was fun, so I figured I’d set him up with a date. Get ready for a teeming horde of blue baby snakes (calling out any fans of Zappa…!). Anyways, this time I knew to put magenta down first, then work on the blues. I didn’t go into it planning it as an NMM study, but the copper, steel and gold all seemed appropriate choices. I was happy with the effect I got by adding a purple wash into the copper triad, it seemed to give a better burnish to the highlight color, which then could be selectively pushed with a second highlighting (verdigris was last). Still not happy with the sword, but all of the relief work makes those Nagendra swords tough! As always, comments and criticism are welcomed!

Here we go with another Nagendra. Trying new colors each time I do them to try and have some fun with scales. What I need to do on my next one is some kind of combination with yellow. Something more challenging to work with to make it fun (or completely ruin it). BATTLE REPORT! Wins: * Combo of golds and brown seemed to do alright. * Felt brave enough to use an oil wash this time. It's frustrating because I'm always afraid it's going to ruin the work I put in, but at the same time, the results could be awesome. The wash is on the scales, and the shield. I tried it on the sword, but it didn't lay into the lettering strong enough. * The scales were good after the oil wash but needed a 'pop'. I went back and hit diagonally adjacent scales with a cream color. Gave it a cool pattern without overwhelming the look. I did my last one with an organic here or there approach. This was more pattern driven. Doing something like a diamond back would be a challenge worth doing. Misses: * The sword did not come out as I had hoped. It looks washed out and the runes on it are less than ideal. Could use some fix ideas for this. * The shield also is missing...something. I don't know what it is, but there's nothing really cool about it. * Eyes are so small on this model it's hard to do anything fun. I made them black with yellow slits, but you can't really see them due to the size. Anyone else struggle with eyes that are too small to really detail? Or have a solution worth trying? * This one just didn't have the same pop effect I'd hoped for. I'm not sure what's mising, but it's something.

Nagendra Warrior from Bones 2 (I think) Patterned after a Coral snake I'm really disappointed that the shading got washed out in the photo. Im a better painter than photographer I guess. Hope you enjoy it! Thanks, Gantrell

I've shown the Wraiths off in another thread, but the shots were run through a photo program that wanted to "correct" and "enhance" the images into complete garbage (whether I wanted it or not), so I've got some new ones for them. Some of these pictures are over-exposed, but you can actually see some of the colors on the robes now. The apes are new. They've actually been done for some time, I just never did anything with them. First, the Bar-Llgura. He's big, blue and orange, and cranky. I figure he's "dad" or "big brother" to the other two. Second, the blackback, or youth. Last, the silverback. The stars of the show: The Nagendra! The Captain and The Matriarch. I had actually wanted to avoid green and brown, but sometimes it's just right to follow the tried and true path. I was originally modelling the captain off the boomslang, but I didn't want to do all those black tips/edges. I ended up just enjoying the green and playing with the red enamel armor. The Matriarch was originally to be modeled off the taipan...but they have all these little lateral chevrons...I thought about trying to do just a straight brown line, and then decided just to keep the black head and khaki/brown body. Spear-snake and Warrior I wanted to do something unusual, and I remember the Golden Eyelash Viper, so that's what I used as inspiration for the spear-snake. It's yellow. Kind of like the name suggests. The Warrior is based off Fea's Viper. Fea's Viper will serve as the inspiration for all Nagendra Warriors. Which brings up the last two: Archer and Warrior. I started looking at spitting cobras for the archer, and if I'd found the red spitting cobra first I would have used it. But I ended up on another cobra (palawan) instead. The palawan is basically black with light brown/khaki stripes and a partial mask. I added three dots to the hood for grins and giggles. The fletching on the arrows is purple, and decoration on the bow is done in a silver/steel color. The other warrior is just like the first, except that the orange is a different shade, and I didn't put the tan on the head. Misc. Action Shots:

The snake people from the Bones 4 core set "Nagendra" subset. Nagendra would presumably be Reapers name for the Yuan-Ti snakemen of D&D fame that these would be similar to. Since I saw them I had this inspiration to do the snakes as the types that the Kill Bill Deadly Viper Assassination Squad use as code names. Presenting from The Deadly Viper Assassination Squad: #86: Snake Charmer aka Bill I went with a more typical fantasy colour scheme on this one as the code name is not a snake species. I imagine that snakes, being cold blooded (technically they are not actually cold, but poikilotherm which means their body temperature is regulated by their surroundings, and not heated internally like warmblooded creatures like mammals. This again means that they are sluggish and slow when cold and quick and speedy when warm.) would find frostfire especially dangerous and deadly. These are speedpaints, and therefore all a bit rough. All done in just a few hours. My work commitments have increased significantly lately, so I do not have that much time to paint. I might revisit them with washes, lining and detailing at a later date, but for now they are acceptable for the table top. They are all painted from a black undercoat. I made a 32mm base adapter that fits 25mm bases, and used it on these to make the bases more in line with both the size of the models and the rest of my basing for the Bones models. Thulsa Doom: "You killed my snake. Thorgrim is beside himself with grief! He raised that snake from the time it was born". So finally got the courage to post some minis that I have finished over the last few months. Here are some of the Yuan-Ti Nagendra metal minis I have always really liked. I have the archer and halberd still to paint up that I have from my most recent order, but am taking a break from the scaly creatures for a bit. I know I need to work on my highlighting but any other feedback is welcome.

I finished this guy Friday night, he was a rescue from the melt table at last Reapercon. He was relatively quick to paint, and pretty fun, too. Some of the shading I did on his 'belly' scales is hard to see due to the angle of the pics, but what you see on his bottom half is also present on his chest area, too. I got his eyes looking pretty good (although to be fair, they are a bit bigger than the average human sized figures eyes). I had thought about giving him some patterns on his scales, but decided against it. The base was one of the first ones I've done using base stamps; I'm not entirely happy with it, but it's not awful, either. More practice both with the stamps, and with what material I use for the base is in order. This one was straight Green Stuff. Thanks for looking, please let me know what you think. ETA----I put 2 SKU numbers in the title because he is available either by himself (14423) or in a multi-pack with 9 total figures (06155).

I'd felt like I was banging my head on a wall with the main mini that I was working on lately, so I set that aside to work on this as a something simple to make me feel a bit better. My first try at NMM, too (which shows ). All I can say is that the contrast really did look better to my eyes until I started taking photos of it. At least it's somewhat made up for by how nice the eyes and the gem on the left bracer turned out. More photos and thought process at my blog: link C&C welcome
