  1. So I found these guys at the last NEMPA paint day a I attended a few years back, and decided to paint them up... I have many other orcs from this line, but not these guys... I even have the Polly S Armor Dark Green paint I used on the others back in High School! (I,m class of 1981) and a close up So all you Partha lovers chime in with comments and critiques! The Drow
  2. This is the bones version of 3761, and I think it has not made it into the store yet. I painted it like a big orc, or like the title says, half-ogre/half-orc. I don't normally paint blood, but this guy needed a little extra to emphasize how mean he is.
  3. This fellow has been lurking at the bottom of a drawer or box for over 30 years.... I finally painted him up. It was actually a bit irritating somehow... I guess that's why he sat in nothing more than a coat of primer and a red shield for so long! Not sure the maker, maybe citadel? He is on a metal part for the slot base that helpfully says 'orc'. All this time later, I love him just for nostalgia and remembering my dad painting up all those orcs... and we never used the minis in play!
  4. Presenting the Swamp Orc Standard Bearer, he's part of one of the newer factions in Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar range. Really happy with this one and I had a lot of fun painting all his chunky detailing! As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.
  5. Using the long weekend to my advantage, I got a decent paint in on this guy. Meet Gronk. BATTLE REPORT! Trying to do a more comic-style paint job, I did less wash and more highlights with bold color. Wins: * The two-toned leathers look fun and eye catching where they need to be. * Staying to as simple color-scheme as possible helped me draw this one to a close. (Brown, Orange, Green, ivory, red) * The eyes came out really good and I finally managed one of those little reflective white dots in the corner of the right eye. * Opting to not color-up every single ribbon or fold as a new color and simply stick to the simple palette helped me keep pushing forward. * The shield came out great! If you look close on the edges and near the dents, there's small orange highlights that are really faint. Probably my favorite small thing on this model. Misses: * Not digging his green skin highlights. Did a Green base, then ink wash, then went back over with same green, then brought up by adding white. Placement of the highlights is off as well as not understanding light. Crux for me. * Metal sword over all has a good look to it. Can't seem to use the Vallejo Metals for edge highlighting. Too runny. Need to swap to regular metal paints and use edge of brush. Love the Metals, but they are so thin and spread so quickly. * Struggled with doing boots. I want to darken them, but using black just seems too easy. When they are super dark, I can't figure out how to bring the color up. Lame. * On the dino skull on his shoulder something bad happened. I went over it with bone color like 3 times to make sure it was thick enough. Then did a wash to bring out the dips and dirty it up a little, but I guess pulled up the bone color before it dried - even though it was sitting for 15 or more minutes before I hit it. That sucked. Fixable, but not sure why I hate that color so much. * Learning how to be 'subtle' is something I need to develop. It's almost like I'm needing to see big swings in the color to make my eye train to it being different, but the reality is subtle would be better.
  6. Goblin Agent 1 Goblin Agent 2 Dwarf Agent 1 Dwarf Agent 2 Orc Agent 1 Orc Agent 2 WIP: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/76692-massive-darkness-agents/
  7. This is one of the warband of Orcs from Bones I. I though all of these had a lot of character. I painted them up as light grey-green based on some of the Dungeon Dwellers paint sets. The wood grain inside the shield is freehand. Here is the WIP for the whole group. https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/93235-darcstaar-vs-bones-i-ep-12-orcpocalypse/ If I had it to do over again I’d change the fur colors, because they blend in with the chainmail. Here are the group shots. Enjoy.
  8. Here is the big boss of the Bones I Orc Warband. With all of these Orcs they are shadowed with a purple color. I added some green freckles/sun spots for a little interest. For his shield trophies, I included some skin tones and hair colors that could represent elf, dwarf, human, goblin and undead. The wood planks and boards on the shield are freehand. Kavorgh got a little extra love with the bloodstain on the axe. WIP here: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/93235-darcstaar-vs-bones-i-ep-12-orcpocalypse/ And the group shot. Enjoy.
  9. Here is another of the Orc Warband from Bones I. He had a very bent sword, so I swapped it with one from the Bones III weapon sprue. WIP Here. https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/93235-darcstaar-vs-bones-i-ep-12-orcpocalypse/ And the group shot. Enjoy.
  10. Here is another of the Orc Warband from Bones I. WIP Here. https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/93235-darcstaar-vs-bones-i-ep-12-orcpocalypse/ And the group shot. Enjoy.
  11. Here is another of the orc warband from Bones I. His spear was too floppy, so his spear tip is a weapon swap from the weapon sprue from Bones III. WIP link: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/93235-darcstaar-vs-bones-i-ep-12-orcpocalypse/ And the group shot. Enjoy.

  13. Artisan Guild 3D Design. Printed on my Elegoo Mars. Part of my Horde of the North Project. WIP here: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/79398-horde-of-the-north-glitterwolf-paints-barbarians-and-mammoths/&tab=comments#comment-1686478 Here she is. For those interested she is a free sample on Thingieverse.
  14. Just pulled these out of the drawer. One of these Orcs was next in line on the Bones I Kickstarter Rewards image, so I’ll try to squad-paint them together to save time. They have been cleaned of mold lines. The spearman’s spear was very bent, as was the great sword. So, those got weapon swapped with basic weapons from Bones 3. Those are darker grey. Washed them, so just waiting for them to dry. Also had to gap fill spearman’s wrists.
  15. One of the three from #2550. Been a while since I've touched a paint brush. Tried to use up as much of my old Ral Partha paints from LOOOOOOOOOONG ago. I made zero attempt to make him pretty. But there wasn't enough to give him that LARP image at a renaissance fair.
  16. This is my summer exchange mini for Rainbow Sculptor. The marching orders were for Bones and something witchy. I have fallen out of favor with Bones, but Bones Black seems better so I ordered a few of those. In the end I went with the shaman. On one hand the fabric was just a large block of color that needed broken up, but on the other the contours made it difficult to do anything too fancy. Thus she ended up with a simple pattern that I could manage to get into the folds of the fabric. The skin was mixed from 09658 Christmas Wreath and 09694 Retro Emerald, just because I'd never used them.
  17. The third set of humanoids from the Lost Valley Expansion of the Bones 4 kickstarter is the Orcs of the Jade Fire tribe: Featuring an all-female cast of hard bodied primitives, with abs to break rocks on and buns of bronze. The barbaric splendor of these women rival that of the bodybuilder cast of any 80's Sword and Sorcery movie. Apart from the fact that said 80's movies usually feature male bodybuilders with any females being more of the centrefold variety both in body type and costume budget. The burning question would be: what do the male members of the Jade Fire Tribe look like? Do they have the physique of Steve Rogers before or after the serum was administered? Or are they more like bloated ant drones that barely can move while the womenfolk do all the work? Inquiring minds want to know! 44089 Jade Fire Shaman #633 The skin is Citadel Contrast Space Wolves Grey over a greyish white on black zenithal undercoat. Look closely and you will see the spatter pattern a slightly bent airbrush needle tip will leave...I need to buy myself a proper one, the cheap chinese ebay ones I have been using are really not very good at all. Good thing the Vex is coming. 44088 Jade Fire Chieftain #632 aka She-Hulk. Also the one model in all of the Lost Valley with blatantly metal-looking parts. 44096 Jade Fire Champion #636 44095 Jade Fire Warrior #635 Thirty Five dollars and a six-pack to my name! Time to break out that old Black Flag album again. 44094 Jade Fire Spearman #634 Either the naming of the Bones version of this mini is a bit off (especially since the metal version is called "Spearmaiden") or this one has the worst case of Moobs I have seen since Meat Loaf's character in Fight Club. Look, it's the stripper! Wheeee! These minis were completed August 4th 2020 Jade Fire Tribe orcs, from the Lost Valley Expansion Bones 4 kickstarter, delivered 2019 Reaper Miniatures Sculpted by Gene van Horne Made in Bones Black PVC available from reapermini.com
  18. Quick and easy speedpaint. Thanks for looking!
  19. It's been a while since I posted here, but I wanted to share one of my current projects. I started on this 70mm orc from Yedharo back in October. I took a break from it for a while and just recently got back to work on her. When I first saw the sculpt, for some reason I immediately pictured a blue orc. I know a little untraditional, but I like to switch it up from the standard green. One of the things I wanted to work with on this piece was the use of ambient color/light. I pictured her standing over some beast she'd killed and wanted to show the light reflecting off of that and onto the orc. Since she's blue, I decided on red for the beast. It's not the easiest thing to see in the photos (the effect is more obvious in person) but you can see it most clearly from behind. When I start on the armor I'll be doing the same thing and it should be even more pronounced there since metallic objects can pick up a lot of light/color from the other objects in the scene. I'll be painting her with TMM, so there's going to be some experimentation as I work matte colors into my metallics for the reflected light. My latest progress has been to build the base. I'm not much of a sculptor, but I've been getting some practice in over the past year and feel a bit more comfortable tackling something like this. Overall I'm pretty happy with how the base sculpt turned out. Now I'm curious to see what I'll think of it when I finally start to paint it! Having the base is also nice as, when I start on the metallics, I'll have a more precise reference to work from for the reflections (instead of just the vague idea I had when I worked on the skin).
  20. Painted this one for my orc mob mordheim warband, hope you like it
  21. My starting warband for Mordheim is finally done! Hope you like them!
  22. This my orc warlord on a warg. It is a Nolzurs deep cuts orc on dire wolf miniature. I did most of the painting in one day, I do need to touch up the base and redo the finish on the flag, but otherwise he is done. I was aiming for a Hound of the Baskervilles look for the Warg. Now he just needs an actual name besides Orc Warlord.... Thanks for looking!
  23. This is one of Mantic's earliest metal minis, the "limited editon" Orc Shaman from 2011. It was AFAIK not available by itself, but added to army boxes, deals and so forth and I believe I got this from the first Kings of War kickstarter in 2012. Or an army box with orcs. Today, it is on their website and can be had by redeeming 25 mantic points through their points scheme. It was known for a while as "Wip the Half-Caste" but now is back to "Orc shaman" I suspect the "Wip the half-caste" name is some sort of internal Mantic joke. I must admit I have always found this model to be rather busy and difficult to read. There seems to be so much going on. more pics and stuff below
  24. Hi all, my first post was answered by such warm and supportive folks I decided to have a crack at the ol' orc from Reaper mini training set #1. The left eye took me 6 tries (and twice that many curses.) Really enjoying this new hobby, first time I tried was back in 1983 and it was a disaster. Maybe patience does come with age. :) #separatedbutnotseparate
  25. Orc and goblin gals are some of my favorite things to paint but alas they are few and far between
