  1. Or May bee not depending on how you did prior months. Grand totals are a hair out of date, but I'll get around to that soon Also: while the enthusiasm is appreciated, please do not post the monthly threads ahead of these. If I cannot post the monthly thread for some reason, then it will be posted by Flamehawke per the established format with the appropriate information. Please see page 1 here for rules and guidelines/questions. This is also the chatter thread here: The first post as linked will contain the updated totals soon and the plan is to start getting the graphics sent to all who

This means to modify your existing post when you get a new figure finished instead of posting a new one. This month's challenge is: 5. Yes I'm aware with reapercon ther
  3. I'm starting a new thread as the CMPA has relocated again. The CMPA (Colorado Miniature Painting Alliance) meets on the second Saturday of each month from 10am - 4pm. We welcome painters of all levels of skill. Bring your paints, minis and brushes and get tips and advice from some of the best painters in the area. We are currently painting at Dark Matter Games (Suite O, 1050 S Wadsworth Blvd, Lakewood, CO 80226) at the corner of Wadsworth and Mississippi. We are back to averaging 10 - 12 painters a month so come on down and slap some paint around A word of warning! The sign for Da
  4. I made a step-by-step of how I painted the above logo. It was linked to a Google+ album but since it might be difficult for some to follow, and hoping those of you who want to do freehand but feel it would be too complicated will find it useful and realize how crappy it looks at the beginning, and how you need to stay with it and refine the whole thing Step 1: This is our canvas, the right shoulder of the Szalamandra TAG. I am going to paint the Szalamandra Squadron Logo on it, as seen on the miniature box. Step 2: I take paint and my Raphael #0 brush, and test brushstrokes to ge

  6. I was painting a Bones stone golem for a game, and I attempted to give it a kind of tree bark looking texture or some kind of wood texture because... frankly they didn't have the miniature I was looking for in stock. My first thought was to attempt to make it look like muscle, but painting it in wood colors to make it look organic kind of like Groot. Though I scrapped that and tried a generic bark texture. Now it looks more like rust on iron in my opinion, so i finished it for now. What would you have done to attempt to make this guy look more 'wooden'.
  7. I'm going to attempt painting a bones High Elf Adventurer as one of my D&D. One of the things he has is kind of cloak of invisibility (it's called something else in the book) and I wanted to make it look like his cloak is phasing out of invisibility kind of similar to this awesome paint job. Problem is, a forest/dungeon like scene is a bit more difficult to paint as compared to a space scene like this one. Does anyone have any advice or tips to pull off a similar effect?

  9. I had a brief discussion with Michael Proctor (Clever Crow) about the Open Category while we were at Genghis Con. It is was worth pointing out to everyone that your display can include pictures of your in progress work. In fact for this category I would encourage it. While we are familiar enough with Reaper miniatures to confidently figure out conversion work there are a lot of miniatures out there that we aren't familiar with. If you have pictures of the stock model (even off the manufacturer's site) and what you converted it would be of tremendous help to the judges figuring how extensive an
  10. PROJECTS FOR 2015...I don't paint anywhere as many miniature figures as 95% of you other members do...but I want to finish painting the above pictured miniatures in 2015...Pictured are; Photo 1...The vampire/monster hunting party of the town of Covasna, Transylvania. Photo 2...Two-headed ogre with female victim...will be done on a (KING KONG) type of rock face plateau setting. Photo 3...My (Bruise Brothers) ogre pair. Photo 4...Finish my Black Orc hunter/killer war band. Other projects... 1. Tavern front vignette with strumpet and gentleman. 2. French bordello balco
  11. OK, I'm gonna run a Paranoia Game. I want to use NOVA troops as the PC Torubleshooters. Going to paint up some IMEFs as Green Goons, and Some IntSec Blue Troopers, too. Going to use some of the scientist characters as R&D types, with various security clearance colored lab coats. So, I want to know whether I should do head swaps on the minis, or leave the NOVA with Helmets (there's one with no helmet already, but I was going to use all 6 different NOVA) Also, one of the Missions I have has the PCs start at Red and get promoted gradually up all the way to Ultraviolet, stopping
  12. So I returned from a month long trip in Spain this evening to find a Giant and strange box sitting on my bed. After opening it carefully, thinking it must be a bomb or decapitated head, I was overjoyed to find it was none other than my Bones Kickstarter! REJOICE! After sorting through the sheer rediculous number of miniatures, I realized that I'm going to need some sort of motivation to paint this beastly assortment of minis, and the best way to do that is to showcase my work on the internet as I try to tackle, as quickly as possible, all the Minis I got. The plan is to speed paint them u
  13. I received a PM some time ago about partnered entries being allowed in the competition. My gut reaction was no, but I indicated that I would discuss it with the Head Judge (Clever Crow) and I finally got around to that today. We want to be inclusive of different ways to participate in the competition so we are going to allow partnered entries starting with the 2015 competition. 1) All participants must be present when entering the competition with their mutual piece (i.e. no, "I'm going to play a game could you enter it?" shenanigans). The entry will not be accepted if all the particip
  14. I hate eyes on miniatures. There...I got it off my chest. I'm not bad at painting eyes. Some of the FAQ's on these boards are top-notch concerning the subject. And when I see what the pro's can do, the first thing I think is "Wow, what talent. Those are amazing peepers." Which is usually followed by "And I don't like them." Maybe it's because they look too cartoony. Maybe it's the scale. Maybe it's the flat or amorphous features around the face, or the size limitations, or maybe (most probably) my brain is broken. But I seem to gravitate toward implied eyes with shading, glasses, goggl
  15. This stuff is probably WAY beneath the skill level of most people here, but I decided to put up a series of basic YouTube videos about getting minis tabletop-ready. I'm still fiddling with the best format and setup to use. The first couple are online now: Episode 1
  16. Anyone know the names of the winners in the painting contest this year at Origins?
  17. I've been hiding from my little men. There are a horde of them on my workbench, now. Little men and little women, and some dwarves, a hobgoblin, Chibi Cthulhu, and oh so many more. All the Knights of the Dinner Table, modded to be holding paintball guns, for use in a skirmish game I was thinking about. The Black Hands, too, including Gordo wearing a Dalek shell, a joke that makes no sense unless you read the comic or check out the online version.* And I'm afraid of them. I have motivational problems. I was off for the summer for a while, but now they need me back for a couple weeks, and n
  18. Yo, folks. Questions: 1. When using a wash, how does one decide what color to use? I'm working with the Reaper triad, and I also picked up three Citadel shades the other day. Reaper's black I think I get. It gives a lining sort of effect and black shadows, in my early experimenting. The brown seemed to do pretty much obvious stuff with the mini I've tried it on--dirtied it up, gave it some shadows not quite so dark as the black but entirely noticeable. Would it be an avenue to explore for weathering/aging/whatevering wood and/or leather? The flesh wash--should I be trying to hi
  19. Hey, folks. I'm very new to painting seriously, and I'm getting the itch to try a skeleton-type figure out. I have this neat little Arachno Champion I picked up 10-15 years ago, so he'll probably be my victim. I've seen a lot of skeletons, of course, but I was wondering if anyone's ever done or seen done one of these in particular (also wondering if there's a better place to ask this question; if so, sorry). I haven't come across one yet. I like seeing other people's takes on minis and seeing what I can learn before trying my own. Thanks! ETA: Arachno Champion, not "assassin" as I origina
  20. I was just wondering if alcohol inks were safe to use with minis painting. I've found a way to get some extremely cheaply, but I wasn't sure if it would work well for miniature painting. Basically, it's ink suspended in 70% isopropyl alcohol. Would that strip any of the paint off? Is sealing the paint job with testor's dullcote first necessary? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
  21. Now that a new year is upon us, I've decided to retire my old Thread of Total Noobary and start a new one. I've grown a lot since I picked up this hobby in August, and I really wanted the first page of my Show-Off thread to show some work I'm actually proud of :) Click here to jump to my latest work! I'll kick it off with a few highlights from last year, then immediately follow-up with my first figure of 2014. Highlights from 2013: Pathfinder Red Dragon: Garrick the Bold: Skaveling (Undead-themed Dire Bat): Bones Skeletons: Pathfinder Technic League Capt
  22. Just wanted to drop a note that a group of us in the Southeast is meeting up at Dragon Star Hobbies in Athens GA. Saturday, May 31 from roughly 12 noon until 4pmish... May arrive a little earlier, may stay a little longer, but the focus time will be between 12 and 4. Psstt... and as an enticement for you to come... The Dragons Don't Share II resin set obtained at Reapercon will be in attendance for your visual perusal!
  23. I know a bunch of you guys use airbrushes for various projects. I have the crappy EE hand flamer version, and it's fine for terrain, but I want the real thing. I have a small collection of large models I want to paint, not to mention C'thuhulu and those dragons that are coming next Spring and I want to be able to do these models justice. what do I need to get started? what kind of brush? what kind of compresser? what are basic do's and dont's of mixing the paint? any other really good advice? I appreciate any input you airbrushers are willing to provide.
  24. I picked up my first ever Bones piece at ReaperCon this year. I found out very quickly that water doesn't play well with Bones, but I also heard that you don't need to prime Bones. My question is simple: do you prime your Bones? And if not, how do I need to alter my paint prep to get the best results? Thanks!
  25. So today Dilvish and I went to visit Aard_Rinn and she gave me three cool brushes. (Thanks again Aard!) When I got home I immediately started to work on a serving wench for my D&D group, our last in school meet is next Friday. After I finished with everything Dilvish said the tomorrow he would teach me how to highlight hair on my minnies! I'm so excited! I'm gonna be posting picture of it as soon as I finish.
