  1. "People of Earth! Greet your new liberators!" Meet Xurr the Exalted, of Hydra Miniatures! A spaceman after the mold of Ming the Merciless, a conquerer striding from world to world. Meet his intrepid son Xor-tan! Hydra again, this a lightly modified 'Buster Gordy' given greenstuff gloves and a cloak taken from a Nolzur vampire hunter. Meet his lovely wife Xenovia (Hydra again; I've painted this model as a blue Imperial before) and his dauntless and beautiful daughter Xana (probably my favorite of the Bones Chronoscope expansion set; absolutely a gorgeous pulpy sculpt)! You know what they say--the family that CONQUERS together, is STRONGER together! The royal chariot (repurposed from a Fortnite "Human Bill" toy on clearance): Those crazy kids: A tense meeting with the Venerians: I get the vibe that Xurr is an ambitious, intriguing despotic vassal of MARDUK THE LIVING GOD--perfect for a Starscream-style role. There are aesthetic overlaps, but enough differences that I didn't want to make these minis more Imperials. Plus, it's always fun to make new colors of humanoid spacemen! Xurr and Marduk may clash, but their consorts get along remarkably well together, Contact with the Galacteers of Earth; And of course, we couldn't forget the family pet! Skullcrusher here is a Nolzur's Crag Cat, What a good kitty. These were fun! Great excuse to use some Vallejo fluorescents. Hope I can find more minis in a suitable style to swell their ranks! Keep watching the skies, cadets!
  2. The BRAIN SQUIDS! Psionic invaders from another continuum! Wielders of strange powers! Masters of DEEP TIME! We've seen some of them before, but Bombshell has recently put out some new sculpts, including the high-ranking Edo Primelings: These robed hierophants are given charge over weighty matters of strategy. Here are the two new plastic ones and the old metal version. Another Primeling, with collar of office and Rod of Authority, with the new version of Destroys Nulls, helmeted and given a Mind Scepter. (Notice, the new version is slimmer and smaller than the old Destroys Nulls, below, although much fancier) Here's the whole crew of new Primelings and Dominators: And a group shot! Hooray! The scenery is from a playset from Avatar: The Way Of Water. Found it on clearance and it was money well spent! Finally got to introduce my players to these tentacled creeps the other week. The ray guns served as Ontological Disruptors--essentially removing a character from existence for a certain number of rounds. The perfect tool for chronological meddlers! Hope you enjoy, and KEEP WATCHING the SKIES! Guard your BRAINS!
  3. "Don't be alarmed--this won't hurt a bit!" It will, in fact, hurt a lot. Presenting Dr. Klaus Koenig, M.D., Ph.D., cyborg, evil genius. This is the Bonesium version from the Chronoscope expansion set. The table is from Crooked Dice; I added the gears for adjusting angle and position. Don't worry about the stains; he assures us they just won't come out of the padding. More angles: Here he is with Nurse Karla (seen elsewhere) and an experiment. What's going on here? I don't know but it can't be good. The experimental subject and much of the tank is RAFM's 'Bio-Chamber With Female,' with some pipework from Crooked Dice and some GW bitz. More angles: If I ever finish painting the Bride of Frankenstein sculpt I have in the Shelf of Shame, you'll be seeing more of this guy and his lab!
  4. You read that right. Bombshell minis is planning to release a Counterblast RPG setting through kickstarter soon. Details are scarce at the moment but we know they'll be using the Savage Worlds system. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bombshellminis/counterblast-for-savage-worlds-rpg
  5. The Egyptians of old venerated the scarab as an aspect of Ra, the motivator that propelled the Sun across the sky like a dung-ball. Thousands of years later, the red desert has covered the sacred sites, and vulgar adventurers dig for treasure. But it does not do to profane the shrine of a god! Or perhaps it is just that, in the desert, everything is hungry. Either way, it's not pleasant. Or quick. What a great pulpy sculpt, and what a horrible way to go!
  6. The Frost Salamander from Nolzur's has a wonderful chunky head and heavy-jawed face, and that won me over. It also has six legs, so not your average Earthly amphibian. Good thing there's always room for planetary monsters! And it's a great canvas for patterns; salamanders are often brightly spotted or striped. Let's make him a denizen of the steaming swamps of Retro-Venus! More angles: Bombshell makes some amazing sci-fi ladies and this is one such! I took some liberties with my interpretation as a Venerian Amazon--the sculpt indicates that Wanda here is wearing leggings or tight pants rather than the singlet I painted, but her headgear, belt, and boots fit very nicely with Hydra's Valkeeri sculpts. More angles: Let's put the two together! Why does a huge predator need vivid warning coloration? Well, on Retro-Venus, there's always another, bigger predator. I *do* love putting bright colors on weird beasties. Hope you enjoy!
  7. This fella is a magnificent sculpt, from 'fro to bell bottoms. Horace "Action" Jackson is a bare-chested hero and I think he makes a good addition to my midcentury setting Allswell, USA. Of course, you should have a good reason to be pointing guns around in a small town, so here he is with Muggsy, my pulp crook.
  8. Irresistible fellows, these. Shaggy, bulky bodies like a ROBOT MONSTER or a moa; long, bendy necks; beaks somewhere in the hornbill-flamingo-shoebill-Skeksis-vulture range. From CP miniatures. They came in 3 packs: Soldiers (4 riflebirds plus a squad leader), Diplomats (3), and Auxiliaries (3 riflebirds with hats). The skin color scheme was based on blue, red, and yellow boobies; the beaks were inspired by a number of large birds. I added some headgear for fun and in homage to the dandelion-headed Looney Tunes "Instant Martians." I get the idea they are of a highly organized bureaucratic culture with expansionist tendencies, unlike the tribal Venerian Amazons (Hydra Valkeeri). The Hydra Imperials, below, are also from an expansionist imperial culture, but the Terror Birds are less centralized and more impersonal in their cruelty. They get around. Seen here with Hydra's Slishans, who have little culture and almost no technology but DO know from mineral resources. And seen here engaged in diplomatic negotiations with the highly-cultured Andromedans/Neirans. Both species have a great appreciation for the arts and for manipulation. You wouldn't call either culture "decadent," because of the railguns, but 'Baroque' might be appropriate. Notice that the Bombshell Neirans are towering statuesque specimens. Vavoom to a point that makes the Venerians look puny. Trade talks with a chieftain of the Mole People from Sirius B. and theological disputation with an Exalted Proselyte of the Yoggs. The Brain Squids are an esoteric lot and require a delicate touch.] A disputed claim of precious nuclear resources on the border of the Robot Hegemony. The Robots are prohibited by First Law to harm humans, but your beaky bois here do NOT qualify. A Martian delegation, bearing the wisdom of aeons of progress and aeons of rust. A culture this antique requires more than one specialist. The Krodox are one of the few spacefaring species to outmass a Terror Bird, They are willing to trade ceramic goods for new and exotic meats, and respect bigness in a fellow-sentient. Humans are not known for their bigness, but are slippery customers. Tricksters and clever dodgers. Lastly, a diplomatic summit with representatives from most sentient, spacefaring species. As always, C&C welcome! What do you think their alien avian civilization is like?
  9. I always thought this was a fantasy mini. Only when I began painting it I could read the sculpt enough - no fantasy mini at all, more of a pulp themed one. Probably better suited for the chronoscope line... Painting was really fun, though. Just a quick paint job on black primer. Since I rarely prime black that was a very interesting experience. C&c very welcome. Enjoy!
  10. The Fisherman's Rest. You know the place. The smell of stale beer, sea salt, rum, and fish scales. "Evenin,' Old Billy! How be ye these days?" "Oh, I be well enough, exceptin' as how me fishin' trip t'other day went. Now listen, lads. 'Twere a fine calm sunny day and I were far from shore, a-castin line for snapper..." "Wow!" "Nay, lad, there's none in town who can catch a minnow and sell a grouper like Old Billy." "Nay, swear on me old mum's grave it happened! But if ye find that hard to swallow, ye might be ill-prepared for what came after..." *urp* "no, now I think on it, twere more like this, aye, that sounds better." "...but the long and the short of it, I never DID catch that snapper." "Okay, Bill, time for ye to get some cold water in you." *** Chronoscope Pulp Ship's Captain and Ship Hand. Had them painted up, and the shark, but didn't have a good story until a friend gave me one of the Juvenile Kraken mini. Between the shark's integral splash-base, the squid's splash-stand, and the Water Elemental, we got some good scenery! I had a lot of fun making the Fisherman's Rest backdrop, too. Old Barkeep has heard all of these yarns before.
  11. The scrubby Western desert. Early morning. The weather is clear, and Meyer Herrick, impresario and director has a FULL schedule. Jimmy Ishikawa, cameraman and technician, makes sure the machinery is all running smoothly. Grips and stagehands haul on setpieces for the first shoot of the day--a period epic of Egyptian palace intrigue. Clapper and general assistant Eddie Green makes sure breakout star Clara Haroutian is prepared and familiar with her blocking. And here's the Old Man himself, shouting as usual! ' ROLL CAMERA! CUT! After several takes, Meyer is at least temporarily satisfied, and ready to shoot the next scene the studio needs, a bit of Greek tragedy. Once a darling of the limelight and the boards, Gordon Audifax is now a drunken has-been, taking a last shot at fame with the detested motion-pictures that stole his livelihood. Still a pro though! And with that segment finally wrapped and in the can (after much hollering and greasepaint touch-ups) the great director moves on from Illuminating Art to the stuff that keeps the lights on at the studio: stock Westerns. Rio Wilson and Miguel Alvarez trade squibs and quips that will later be written on title cards. CUT! You dash-blanking dod-durned dunderheads! Props knew we needed a castle wall backdrop for the swashbuckling scene, where the blue blinking blanked blazes is it?! Someone's gonna get fired so hard they won't never work in this town again! Ah well, we make do. The show must go on! Change the schedule, we'll take five and shoot the soliloquy today instead of tomorrow. Close-up shot, Jimmy! Aaand cut! That's going to be lunch. Check back in with Makeup after and we'll get through the rest of the dance number and the saloon scene! More pix if you need: This is an excellent pulp-era set; the old-timey camera is very detailed, and the spotlights can really swivel up and down. The director I wanted to look like a coarse, vulgar man with an unerring instinct for what audiences want to see, and I think the godawful check suit gets that across. Eddie and Jimmy have a lot of character in their postures and poses. Their presence immediately recontextualizes whatever scene is on display. CREDITS: Rio and Miguel and one of the stagehands are from Murch's Pulp Figures; the other stagehand is Artizan's Mr. Price. They and Clara (Egyptian Priestess, 03506, without baboon as Herrik refuses to work with monkeys) have been featured before, some of the first figures I posted here in fact. Gordon (Socrates, 50135) was painted so long ago I forget if I posted him separately or not. Edward Dumond (02775) and Hasslefree's Maika vom Ostwald are more recent and may well show up again! --fin!--
  12. Here's a few of the 3d printed characters from the crowdfunded project by Kazrak Studio. They were done in resin, and have some very fine details. John H. Damon, who likes to read old books written in strange languages: Dr Weird Psychic, a student of the mystic arts who needs no introduction: Laura Craft, field archaeologist and explorer: And dear Dr Home, the brilliant surgeon with a lousy bedside manner: All are presented on bases from Secret Weapon.
  13. Been working on these guys as a test for the squad color scheme. Trying some layering on the white, it's working out well so far. They're 1:48 scale, same as Star Wars Legion, and I've rebased them onto the same 27mm bases that Legion uses. Mostly because the standard D1947 bases are like 35mm. Way huge.
  14. Good ol' Frank Buck, always manages to find trouble, no matter where he goes. And when he doesn't find it, you can be sure trouble is looking for him. This was a quick speed paint, making use of washes and shading products.
  15. Karla, Anime Heroine, is a beautiful sculpt with a great nurse hat. The miniskirt, while delightful, could be more pulp-era appropriate, so I sculpted a hemline extension. I also replaced a handgun with a syringe, and then gave her a couple of backup syringes and converted her other firearm to a needle gun. She is here to cure what ails you! And with her colleagues, Anne Foster (50258) and Dr. Welby (50257): Stay healthy, folks, and get your shots!
  16. Bombshell just came out with a resin version of their dieselpunk pinup/supersoldier, Liberty. She's a great dynamic sculpt, zaftig and muscular with it. Now, we all know this is evoking some 'what if Haley Attewell became Captain America' vibes, but I've already painted up our red-white-and-blue hero before, as well as an Agent Carter type and even a Captain Canada. So, I might as well continue down the North American continent. Presenting: Capitan Mexica! Click for the rest of the turnaround: Alas, the resin gun she came with was fragile and I had to kitbash on a sturdier one. Her shield is taken from an Aztec warrior from this series. Not so much Nazi-punching to do, but she has plenty of threats to contend with that would imperil the good folk of Mexico: ...some stranger than others! And some downright bizarre: Here she is with her northern counterparts: Guest appearances by: Cactus Joe, 50318; Lobo Sanchez, 50050; Diamond Sue Dawson, 50111; El Diablo, 50035; Incredible Woman, 50212; and John Bishop, 50068.
  17. I have been painting these as long as the others, but have lots of photo cropping. Currently painting the sacrificial victim from the Islanders set of Children of the Field... it was separate from the rest of my minis from that kickstarter. And also a (n unofficial) time lord companion for a variety of "normal" female minis. Pics later
  18. My miniatures list has more varieties of pulp than a paper-mill town grocery's orange juice aisle. Mad scientists, apes, cultists, cosmic horrors, spacemen, sky pirates, zeppelineers, two-fisted heroes, etc. But not a lot of what was for several decades, the most common pulp villain. Let's paint something for our heroes to fight! Artizan's Thrilling Tales line comes through once again. Here are two horrible and officious jerks, on a pre-dawn hunt for Resistance agents. "Oberst von Stroop" is the one with the gun; "Major Kreipe" the one with the satchel and the dueling scar. We've seen a couple of the Resistance before, but I believe this is the first time I've posted a picture of "Georges." I had fun with the argyle sweater-vest. Georges' briefcase contains a surprise! Some more baddies: "Colonel Braun," a perfectly pompous sculpt, and the "Kaiserin" from Brigade Games. (Also Erwin Rommel, previously posted elsewhere). (Couple more pictures of Zenith's commandoes, from 50075, if you click below.) And on another, stranger front... This is "Private Trummer," an old and not particularly motivated soldier sent on special detail with a special unit. He sees nothing, he hears no-othing, and he knows NO-O-O-OTHING! It doesn't do to see, hear, or know too much when you're out with the armored Sturm Battalion Zorn. (Pictured: Flamethrower and Rifleman III. I added an extra gas tank from Bombshell to the Flamethrower unit.) Battalion Zorn is led by "Captain Rohr," a merciless and ambitious creep. Funnily enough, for a man who sees and hears nothing, Private Trummer has a knack for not being around in a crisis... Finally, a group shot, as such groups should be.
  19. This looks pretty fun. Apologies for formatting on my phone and stuff got lost. They pay a living wage
  20. Fishfolk Fisherman and Fishfolk Fishwife from Crooked Dice. The fisherman, in oilskins and sou'wester, is a perfect blend of the Gorton's mascot and his product. The bug-eyed fishwife with cleaver was a delight to paint, especially the Atlantic salmon. A shot of some of the Waite Fish Packing Concern's employees, featuring some old friends from RatTrap and BlackCat: The Real Housewives of Innsmouth (including a repurposed Bonnie, 50293, with improvements upon her previous appearance): and one of just the fellas: Golly gee willikers I love painting fishmen. Special credit also to the Dreadmere Fishing Boat, 44032, the perfect touch for the setting.
  21. My love for pulp, and particularly pulp aviators and aviatrices, is well-known. So this cheesecake propaganda pinup poster Sophie had to be. I was very glad indeed to see it back in production. Love everything about this sculpt from hair to boots. But you didn't come here to read; you came for the pictures! Click for more angles: Morale-boosting appearances for different branches Plus one for the Kaiju Corps... and a couple for the brainy boys in the white coats. (Hey, if we're already surfing bombs, might as well go full Strangelove.) Guest appearances by 80070 and some Artizan Thrilling Tales figs, 50075, some Murch Pulp sailors, a Nolzur's water elemental, a Pacific Rim action figure, and a repurposed plastic egg. I also replaced Sophie's wings with some smaller wings I had lying around; I have a plan for those larger wings and a larger devil. Thanks for checking in!
  22. Now THIS is a Pulp Hero! An incredibly burly, fiercely-mustached Sikh with a chain-fed brass-jacketed machine gun. NorthStar UK lists him as Gagan Kayal; the American outlet Brigade Games lists him as Mohan Singh in their "Lord Curr's Company" set. Either way, a powerhouse with incredible style and devastating firepower. I roughed up the barrel of the gun with some Typhus Corrosion before painting it; the original sculpt is smoother. His arm hair is sculpted on, and after that, I'd be remiss not to give him some good chest and shoulder hair. The time period is fairly ambiguous to one who, like me, is not a firearms historian, so the good Mr. Kayal can work from the turn of the previous century... to the middle of said century. Special guest appearances by 50029, British Colonial Riflemen, 50193, Thuggee Cultist, and 50221, Nazi Zombie Officer (and his Artizan co-workers).
  23. Kickstarter is now Live and I’ve updated the thread title to the name of the kickstarter. Heres the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1313980061/pulp-figures-dangerous-dames-28mm-miniatures?ref=9p7oe7&token=186495ca I don’t know what the actual name of the kickstarter will be, but I was at a local wargaming convention earlier today that longtime miniature sculpter Bob Murch attended and had his sales booth set up at. I happened to overhear him mention to another customer that he was planning a “quick and dirty” kickstarter for next month (May) for 5 or 6 sets of female characters for across his Pulp Figures ranges. Figured I better post a thread here in case there are any other Murch fans. Plus it serves as a reminder to keep an eye and ear out for the project.
  24. Sorry for the late yell, been the busiest month of life...ever! TooFatLardies collaboration - last few hours of my KS for British Home Front. They're working on a FREE supplement with rules and scenarios for all the minis, not just for the women, rules that will fit with your male and existing figures too for Chain of Command. But of course there are many games and eras you can use em in. As well as women there's hero dogs, pigeons and other critters! Bad Squiddo is just me and I've been working my arrrrse off getting this off the ground, so even a cheeky peek and share would be amazing. And thank you everyone who has backed so far, we've made some really incredible things happen. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/badsquiddogames/women-of-ww2-british-home-front-28mm-miniatures
  25. Made up my mind long ago that I should paint A CIRCUS. I've had 50124 (Merlock the Magnificent) and 50125 (Yvette, Magician's Assistant) for a while, and also one of the Killer Clowns (50247, Zonkers). And then I found a sheet of red-and-white Big Top striped paper, and a few other things from other sources, and The Addiction set in. Here's what I've got so far: Sarastro the Mentalist there is from Black Cat, and the lady in the Romany garb is a Nolzur's dancer that comes with the barmaid. The orb was from Nolzur's Wizard's study set dressing, and you've already met Cole Stoker, the Pulp Minis stevedore. (Every circus needs roustabouts, especially ones with shovels.) BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH. IT WOULD NEVER BE ENOUGH. A circus needs: -a ringmaster (50277) -MORE CLOWNS (02216, Kosmo) -a sinister knife-thrower (50012, Jack the Ripper) -acrobats (50169, Lady Tiger--there weren't any acrobats under the Circus tag, but if you want spandex and eye-catching costumes, you go Superheroes) -fire-eaters/daredevils (50196, Devil Girl; she would also work in a Weird West game) -animal tamers (coulda used a pith-helmeted pulp explorer, but 50041 has a whip and a sweet costume) -a strongman (50273, Herq) And I also picked up 50121, Dr. VooDoo, because top hat, theatrics, and magic fit in well with the themes I've got. Had some wooden discs for targets (the half-assed paint job is on purpose, such as an underpaid clown might slap on with a very wide brush). I'll also make some cotton candy and fried food stalls, inspired by this: http://carmensminiaturepainting.blogspot.com/2007/04/how-i-made-hotdog-stand-for-my-pulp.html Decided to make Zonkers the "friendly" clown and Kosmo the "horrifying Grimaldi/Pagliacci" clown. My order arrived with a sample of deep midnight/cobalt blue that was perfect. So far, this is ArmyPainter True Red, that reaper-sample blue, white, and black. Devil Girl is also done in Reaper's Cinnamon Red (my go-to for tieflings.) The Plan (advice and C&C welcome): Jack, I think, will be grey pinstripes, including the top hat, the top of which is a target. Firefox the Animal Tamer: Brown whip, redhead, pale skin, fox-orange costume Lady Tiger: I would give her tiger stripes, but don't want to step on the orange territory too much, so yellow cheetah/leopard pattern perhaps? Ringmaster: Seeking advice on the trousers. White? Pale khaki? YELLOW? Stripe down the side, of course. Dr. VooDoo: Straightforward brown skin, yellowed grass skirt, going to try to paint skull-and-ribcage makeup on him Kosmo: that lollipop. Advice welcome. Rainbow, heavy on yellow? Peppermint? Continue his terrifying color scheme? Herq: I feel like he needs horizontal stripes on the tank top. Red or blue? Devil Girl: Also torn. I don't want that duster to be black (thinking probably tan, for the Hellboy resonance?) but that bustier is what's perplexing me. Come with me on this journey into calliope-sounding, popcorn-scented MADNESS!
