    Maledrakh's 77329 Silver Dragon

A large mini ragepainted sloppyfast in under an hour just to blow off some steam and get it off the tray it has been standing around for ages on. Well, large mini I say. Compared to most other dragons of the Bones kickstarters, this one is rather smallish. However, back in the day when heavy metal was king, this mini would be considered a large miniature of a dragon. pics below the clicks
  2. Please use the full SKU and name of Reaper minis in the titles of your Show Off threads, per forum guidelines. You can find this information on the blister card or in the online store. I also like to give credit to the sculptor in a tag, so people can find their favorites. We have a high volume of posts generated from this challenge, which is great! But it's also creating a lot of work for the mods. Ladystorm has already urged folks to comply with these guidelines. As an experiment, this project has been moved to be a bi-monthly challenge again, that seemed to have worked so until further notice that is our format. The longer time frame theoretically will give less stress to painting, and allow more complex jobs, and more sinister challenges. FAQ Reaper only? - No. If going on vacation, can I paint a mini(s) ahead to cover that time frame? - Yes. Are speed paints acceptable - Yes. Can it be a mini started previously? - Yes. Based or unbased? - Yes. Do minis for exchanges count? - Yes. NEW RULE - Size Equivilancy (This list is subject to change as bones 3 releases) Medium and smaller = 1 ea Simple Terrain (plain floors, walls) = 1ea Complex Terrain (http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Terrain/latest/03518 or such) = 2 ea Large (Giants and the like) = 2 ea Huge (Most dragons, Demon Minotaur Lord, etc) = 3 ea Bigger (Kally, Khanjirra, etc) = half of quota rounded up Colossal ("Tianot,") = quota Due to the variable nature of a CAV I compare them against a generic 28mm figure and the Avatar large figure. I take height and bulk into considering if it is worth 1 or 2 figures. If it's not in this list, it counts as 1. (not yet updated for the CAV II figures) If you have a question on the size, please post it here, and I'll address them individually. Much like last year, the idea is to help those of us that normally paint VERY little or not as much as one would like, to start painting more. You challenge begins...now! And Our Mantra: Participants: If your name is missing, or you believe your count is incorrect, please PM me. Please note: to make counts easier, post in the bi-monthly thread and include the tag RPChallenge The objective: To paint 52+ minis throughout the course of the year via bi-monthly quota (each bi-monthly thread will have the quota listed as well as the master list) What qualifies: Darn near anything! Reaper/non-reaper! Any material! Shelf of shame minis from ages long forgotten! Exchange minis! Speed paints! Armies! (Though I'd encourage perhaps something outside the army as well) Any Size! Based/unbased! Etc! (I think that covers everything) Year long challenge Pick a miniature of size large or greater to complete in the Jan-Feb Block. In Nov-December, purchase that same mini and repaint in the same scheme to see direct side-by-side improvement or changes in your methods Jan/Feb: 8: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/84372-january-february-rpchallenge/ March/April: 9: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/85335-march-april-rpchallenge/ May/June: 8 https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/86376-may-~-june-rpchallenge/ July/August: 9: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/87162-julyaugust-rpchallenge/ Sept/Oct: 9: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/88521-september-thru-december-rpchallenge/ Nov/Dec: 9: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/88521-september-thru-december-rpchallenge/ Again, I request that when tagging your posts, please use "RPChallenge" to help with locating minis from this.
  3. Please see the main post here for rules, questions and general chatter, while using this thread to keep a list of links to your show-offs or show-off related comments in a single post: A reminder to please adhere to miniatures posting guidelines as usual. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/84371-2019-rpchallenge-questionsannouncements/ All the information you need should be here. As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge! The Last quarter of the year 2019 because real life is a bugbear sometimes. Your challenge is: 18! Bonus Challenge: 1! Fall! Paint a mini that has fallen over (for whatever reason) (Pompeii guy works for this too!) Bonus Challenge: 2! This is Halloween! - Paint a mini using only colors that have black, orange, and purple in the name. You may also use the paints available from this year's ghoulie bag. Bonus Challenge: 5! Festive feast - Since both US And Canada have their Thanksgiving in this time bracket - paint up a mini (figure or terrain) to have some food being presented, if you can do a drinking vessel to be painting like a full glass, even better! Bonus Challenge: 4! For-lack-of-a-better-idea- December 15th is national Cat Herders' day! Paint a tabaxi, or any other mini featuring a feline. (It's a real holiday, go ahead, look it up) Hard Mode Challenge 1! Jack-o-lantern's light - Paint a mini where the only source of light would be coming from inside a jack-o-lantern. Pumpkin may be part of the mini/base or sculpted Hard Mode Challenge 2! Under Wraps- Paint a mini so that anything that any non-flesh (armor-weapons-cloth-etc) looks like it's patterned wrapping paper. This is assuming a humanoid figure. Dragons or such apply the same challenge to the whole body. As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

    Maledrakh's 77631 Vorvorlaka vampire

This mini is called "Vorvorlaka" and is from the Bones 3 kickstarter, Graveyard expansion. I based it on a 30mm lipped base. The obligatory size comparisons... 77631 Vorvorlaka Reaper Miniatures, Bones 3 KS 2015, Graveyard expansion Sculpted by Bob Ridolfi 30mm base available from reapermini.com Here shown with Reaper 80068 Victorians and North Star's Pulp Heroes: The Film Crew sculpted by Bob Murch click the pic to enlarge
  5. Two out of three "Victorians" .These are from the Bones 3 kickstarter, Mythos expansion, and called "Victorians". The colour schemes are inspired by the "town walk" outfits of Mina and Vlad in 1992 movie Bram Stoker's Dracula. ...and for some reason these are in a smaller scale than most other reaper minis. 80068 Victorians Reaper Miniatures, Bones 3 KS 2015, Mythos expansion Sculpted by Bob Ridolfi 25mm 3D printed bases available from reapermini.com

    Maledrakh's 77256 Brass Bull

The Brass Bull. out of the Bully for you subset in the Bones 2 core set. This is a not-Gorgon from D&D. I do not know why Gygax would call this a Gorgon, since it really has nothing to do with the Gorgon sisters from Greek myth. But what it is, is a massive metal bullock that has a petrifying green gas breath attack. Even though the Gorgon is described as iron, in that it can be rusty, I did it in bronzey brassey colours. I gave it a bit of green around the muzzle to look like some residue from it's halitosis. More beneath the click

    Maledrakh's 77448 Werebat

nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-BATMAN! Another inbetweener, the Bones 3 Werebat this time. I had some paint left over on my palette (I do like dropper bottles much better than the dry-out-pots citadel uses, but sometimes too much paint comes out and I can't really put it back. More pics beneath the click
  8. This one has been standing around half-painted for a while. The rule 63 Drizzt Do'Urden from Bones 2. This model is quite nice from the front and back, but really flat from the side. Which is typical of originally made for single piece metal casting-minis. Your panther has made a mess of my carpet! Come clean it up! 77217 Mi-Sher, female elf with scimitars Reaper Miniatures, Bones 2 KS 2013 core set Sculpted by Julie Guthrie Bonesium PVC. 30mm lipped base available from reapermini.com

    Maledrakh's Bones 2 + 4 Scenery bits

These scenery bits are from the Bones 2 and 4 kickstarters respectively. I did them quick in my go-to rock paint scheme. An uneven coat of dark greengrey over a solid black undercoat, followed by a heavy drybrush with a sandy yellow, and finished with a lighter drybrush of offwhite. Quick and easy! The colours give a much more satisfying rock finish than just using the typical monochrome greys. Too bad the colours are not really showing properly up in the photos. On each end are the Pillars of Good and Evil from Bones 2, the rest is the subset "Grave Things" from the Bones 4 core set. The Pillar of Evil to the left, the Pillar of Good to the right. They are made in the older Bonesium PVC material, and as you can see it shows. No amount of the hot water trick is going to correct that warped listing there. I have not seen the metal versions so I cannot compare them with the Bones or even say that the metal ones do no list in the same way (though I doubt that they do.) I would have thought it be more fitting if these came as a pair of each and not just one of each, but there we are. They are sold as single packs in retail anyway. 77246 Pillar of Good 77247 Pillar of Evil Reaper Miniatures, Bones 2 KS 2013 Core set, Dungeon Décor subset Sculpted by Sandra Garrity Bonesium PVC. 30mm round lipped based available from reapermini.com These are from the subset "Grave things" in the Bones 4 Core set. Listing again! I was unsuccessful in trying to unbend the batty one as it bent back over time. Should have left it longer in the hot water. Oh well. Again, they should have come in a pairs of each. It seems Bones really is not the best material for boxes with square corners and all that...must be that corrupting influence of the Warp. This one is OK and untainted by the warp though. The loose books are a nice touch. Tiny glyphs and imaginary writing that looks much better (and way more impressive) when not magnified, as does most of my painting. The page is actually about 10mm wide. The black symbols and all that are done with .01mm and .02mm pens. klatoo...berata....nih*cough cough* Ok, then, thats it! *takes book, thunder rumbles* Hey wait a minute! I said the words! I did! 10. The Dragonman something from the Bones 4 core set. This mini actually comes in many parts and with a selection of different weaponry and hand-held things. I went with the bucaneery sabre and dagger on account of the high boots looking a little piratey. Also, this is what the render shown in the KS looked like. I went with a bronze / gold armour and my new darker flock mix. Turned out well in my opinion at least. The base is a 3D printed 35x25mm lipped oval as I thought a 40mm round was too large. B4Core #16 Dragonman (?) Reaper Miniatures, Bones 4 KS 2017 unknown sculptor Bonesium PVC. 35x25mm 3D printed oval lipped base should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future

    Maledrakh's Nolzurs Treant gone bad

From WizKids' line of Nolzur's Marvellous Miniatures comes the "Treant", which is D&D-speak for Ent, or Treeman if you are more familar with Warhammer. I find this mini looks angry and scary, not like a benevolent living tree shepherd at all. A malevolent one, on the other hand, fits the bill precicely. And seeing as I have been painting undead halflings and there is a strong historic connection between Halflings and Treemen as allies; so undead treeman. Hence, Torchwood the Furious here. Go on, you know you want to go on:
  12. In the grand scheme of things, this Ogre Palace Guard proxy for Kings of War Vanguard turned out to be a Half-Ogre Fighter when I googled it. Number 4 on the Bones 4 core set graphic, but no official code as of yet. B4Core #4 The casual, brute strength on display straight-arming that shield like that! As you can see, I had problems with the gradient on the shield. Not really satisfied with that at all. He is about the size of an older style Ogre. I rebased him on a 40mm round I printed out. The armour is thick, and the shield is broad. Weak at the neck, and under the arm ...and behind the legs! I wonder if the upper parts of the chest, between the plackart and the gorget, are meant to be bare flesh and not armour? It would probably look wierd if I painted it like that though. Maledrakh's Bones 4 City Guard

Mat and Pat of the City Guard. Or whatever Reaper calls these minis. So far the only names I have for them is Bones 4 Core set #14 and #15. STOP PRESS: Upon actually checking the internets, it seems that they are already available cast in metal, and called "City Guard (2)". A no brainer, really. They are quite obviously just that. I think I should have done the edging on the lower parts of the tabards differently, the blacklining did not turn out well at all. Looks better unmagnified IRL though. 'Alt raht there Guv'ner. You're not gettin' in 'ere dressed like that! Maledrakh's Halfling Spirits

Late last year TTCombat, the wargaming supplies branch of Troll Trader, the large and successful British miniatures shop on Ebay, held a kickstarter campaign called "Halflings and Fantasy Friends". This campaign featured... well, Halflings for the most part (duh!) and also a buch of monsters. All in a cartoony style, in resin and all at suspiciously low prices for a large quantity of minis. As in £60 for over 100 models! In resin! (even though they are halfling sized, that still is insane pricing.) Since TTCombat is well known for making inexpensive but fair-to-good quality stuff (mostly MDF terrain and such up until now) and has Troll Trader behind it, I turned a blind eye to the waving red flag of Too Good To Be True prices and took the chance, going for the RPG pledge and a couple of packs of monsters. The RPG pledge consisted of 10 or 5 each of a number of hafling types and undead halfling types, plus a general and a necromancer mini. And I am happy to say that not only did TTCombat deliver more or less on time (only a shortish delay on this one!), but also the minis are good quality in a resin with a slight flex to it (I suspect it is the same kind that Mantic uses) and that is both easy to work with and quite forgiving if you drop the model. Here are the first ones I have finished, the 10 halfling ghosts: There were three different versions, but the collation was not optimal. I got only 1 of the middle one, 4 and 5 of the other two types. I believe the collation is better in the other unit types I got. No! Boogermen! Stay away from me! I really had no issues with preparing the models for painting, apart from one of the three ghost types having a thick gate going up under the skirt, so to speak. Luckily they came off with a little snipping without damaging the models. I did not need to break out the saw. Lots of vents to snip off, but they did so without any problems. Very little mould lines or bubbles. The worst was actually getting the mould release agent (some kind of silicon) off the minis, a simple scrub-a-dub-dub was not enough for some of the models. This lead to the undercoat being partly rejected on parts of a few of the models. A further coat on the affected areas did the trick though. The minis came with square bases. I used my own 3D printed 20mm rounds instead. The resin they were made of was white and light grey, so I painted these with a black undercoat, so I could see that everything was covered. They I gave them a heavy white zenithal, so they were mostly whiteish. At last I could use that Nighthaunt technical paint ( I wonder if this actually is more or less the same as the new Contrast paints? I do not have any contrast paints so I can't really check.) I gave them all a goodly coat of that, drawing away the larger pooling with a damp brush. When this was dry I thought they were too pale, so I drybrushed them carefully with Reaper Clear Yellow using a flat brush. This gave the much brighter, almost glowing effect I was after. I painted parts of the chains with a bit of Scalecolor Trash Metal to highlight them a bit as translucent metal. Experimenting with different eye colours, I settled on blue-in-blue, as I thought it looked the best to carry across that these are mostly lost souls endlessly looking for their second breakfasts and not really all that evilly wrathful. They are cute little tykes. Albeit in a cartoony style. Halflings Spirits TTCombat 2018/2019 Resin 20mm bases Should become available from TTCombat in the future.

    Maledrakh's Bones 4 knights

The subset called "knights" in the Bones 4 core set. These are NPC or henchmen-types. Wait a minuite! Do I really think that just because they have covered faces? Dang! I chose to use plain white capes, loincloths and so forth as a common denominator, which let them all have their own individual livery colours. B4Core #57 B4Core #58 B4Core #59 B4Core #60 B4Core #61 At least the unarmoured fencing instructor has more than a stick this time around when the white cloaks come. What do we say to the god of death? These also seem to be new sculpts for this KS. Come to think of it, this lot should be good proxies for Kings of War Vanguard Basileans. 17. B4Core #20: Hm. I seem to have merely blocked the cocks. Need some smooth gradient work maybe. I belive this to be a new, digital sculpt for the Bones 4 KS. Reaper Miniatures, Bones 4 KS 2017 Sculpted by ?? Bonesium PVC. 30mm round lipped base should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future Arnold is a bit on the short side, isn't he? Or is that perhaps Brienne the Beauty's taller sister? I have cut off the integral bases, as I like them all to have similar base styles, and the Bones bases are all over the place.. Even though some of the newer oval ones are nice, in the end they just had to go.

    Maledrakh's 77050 Lizardman Warrior

From the Bones 1 core set, a basic lizardman with typically primitive stone spear and turtle shell shield. This mini has good quality details, especially seeing as this is an early softish bones model. 77050 Lizardman Warrior Reaper Miniatures, Bones 1 KS 2012 Sculpted by Ben Siens Bonesium PVC. 30mm round lipped base available from reapermini.com

  20. B4core #1: This one was a bit of a struggle as I foolishly started from a black undercoat and later decided to do the tabard and shield in white. Bad Idea! Especially when I accidentally managed to paint a black line on the finished white shield....argh! seven coats of white later is can still be seen, albeit faintly. I am not entirely happy with the results around the sheild design, which ended up less sharp than I would like. This is also the same shield design as on the Bones 3 "crusaders" subset and also on Sir Justin Forscale, so apparently they are members of the same knightly order or follow the same deity. There exists a metal version of this minis called "Ava Justinia, Female Templar" Reaper Miniatures, Bones 4 KS 2017 Sculpted by Bobby Jackson Bonesium PVC. 30mm round lipped base should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future
  21. From the first Bones kickstarter, or rather, a purchase I made soon after since I did not add on the "Fire Giant Warriors" subset. As I have written earlier, I am grinding through getting the older versions of the Giants painted, as the newer versions are both 1) better detailed, and 2) a lot larger. The idea is that if I do not get the older ones done before I start the newer versions, they will never be touched again. Which would be a shame, really. This is the only old version Fire Giant I have, as the ones from Bones 3 and out are the new size and design. I went with red skin and firey hair and beard. The red is new Citadel Screamer Pink, Wazdakka Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet. The steel is Scalecolor Black Metal, Army Painter Plate Mail Metal and Army Painter Shining Silver. The gold is Vallejo Model Color Brass. ...and Char Donaye is only one wicket away from retaining the Ashes... 77179 Fire Giant Bodyguard Reaper Miniatures, Bones 1 KS 2012 Sculpted by Jason Wiebe Bonesium PVC. 60mm round lipped base available from reapermini.com

As usual, the new format holds a "hard mode" challenge! July and August 2019 Challenge Your challenge is: 9! Bonus Challenge: The First! Independence Day! Both Canada and the US celebrate their independence days in July. Keeping it clean - paint a mini that resembles the most absurd stereotype of the country, whether it's a lumberjack riding a moose with a jug of maple syrup, or a fat dude in a scooter with the american flag and a big mac. Or something from the film Independence Day, that works too. Bonus Challenge: The Second! August 22nd is National Spumoni day. 3-layered Gelato dish. Paint any mini in a themed pallet around your choice image of said dish. Hard Mode Challenge! Eruption Also in August is the fabled eruption of Pompeii. A full-size diorama is a but much to ask - but instead theme a mini around trying to escape the eruption (lava flows, flying chunks of rock, etc) particularly utilizing the OSL and an ashen look. As always, the game is made up and the points don't matter!

    77340: Avatar of Sekhmet

Been painting up my egyptian themed minis. Rebased these guys on some temple looking bases from Dragon Forge that I painted to look more like sandstone. They were fun although the detail on their gold was challenging. Thanks for reading!
  25. A while ago (alright a long while ago) a gameshop was going out of business. One of the last things left on the shelves were a series of Artizan Design pulp characters. The price was right and i was planning a Cthulhu game so i purchased a number of their packs. The game fell through and the miniatures sat in the back of my storage cabinet. But in a fit of wanting to paint something modern, I brought them out and gave them a quick paint job in case i developed a need for a crew of 20's era adventurers. I also had a bit of fun with their posing for pictures and got some much needed practice with the camera (Kudos to @Doug Sundseth for his expertise and help) So.... It was 1922, the war was over and the world was in a frenzy of frolicking and excitement but at the edges, darkness was beginning to creep back into the minds of men. a group of scientists were discussing their views of the war in a room containing the private library of Wilhelm von Bruhegier "over here my good fellows, do you see it on the top shelf?" Jacob had spotted a tome of a lost civilization said to be the path to the vaults of that race with treasures untold. the others rushed to look as well! While realizing it could make them rich and support the university for decades, I was also a job for younger men. As there was a curse associated with the vaults, they didn't desire to have their names attached so they carefully provided a map to one of their graduate students and dropped hints to a trusted archeologist and a well heeled patron of 'unique' cultures. They met in the library to discuss what they had learned. A careful investigation of the shelves provided access to the priceless tome! While the men evaluated the book, the archeologist was drawn to something different about the desk... A little manipulation of the desk caused a secret drawer to spring open providing an ancient compass and a cypher key! with that the party was off to seek fame and glory! However, not far behind them Madam Bruhegier came into the library to determine the fate of her husband's works Quickly discovering that the bait had been taken she and her henchmen were off to recover the goods... after they young fools had sprung all the traps and taken on the curse of course! Before leaving, she went to the shelves and extracted a small metal symbol, said to be the answer to the final puzzle Many days later the inspector hawkens arrived on the scene with 2 detectives, investigating the deaths of three of the university professors and the disappearance of three promising students investigation of the room turned up evidence of the missing students but no indication of where they had gotten to. a nudge by the inspector revealed the secret drawer and a note left by the intrepid archeologist. The inspectors fanned out to search for more clues, quickly discovering signs of the Madam's passing and fearing the worst... And this is where our story leaves us. i hope you enjoyed the minis and the little tale I put together for them. This was to be the beginning of the Cthulhu game that never got started. (players were broken into two groups: the adventurers and the police) the quest was to discover one of the treasure vaults of Atlantis Thanks for looking!
