This is my Duo entry with @Humansquish for this months Reaper Challenge League. I couldn't think of a colour scheme at all, then I remembered that a friend has a T-shirt with the statement " Rhinos are just Chubby Unicorns". I humbly present my interpretation of such a beast As always, comments and criticisms are more than welcome.

Congratulations, by opening this forum post, you have received a quest! This quest is a challenge created by the combined forces of @Sirithiliel the Queen Tiamacrab, a Wizard Most Wild @Pezler the Polychromatic, and myself – @Cyradis the Questgiver. The challenge is this! Paint a small dragon, letting the dice control the colors! The Rules: Post in the WIP Forums “_Your Pseudonym_ is taking the random rainbow dragon challenge!” or “_Your Pseudonym_ has accepted the d20 rainbow dragon quest!” something to that extent. Select a figure from one of the following: Stormwing (from Bones III), Kryphrixis (from Bones III), Deathsleet (77110), or Ebonwrath (77102). You must select the dragon BEFORE rolling for colors. Take a photo with the figure and a clock as proof of order of operations. Roll for colors! Use a d20 and a photo, or an online dice roller with a screenshot as proof of rolling. Or have a fellow forum dweller vouch for your rolls. Use the Color Chart below to determine what the color is that you rolled. There are three rolls. Below is an online dice roller. Most keyboards have a PRT SCRN button that can take a screenshot for you. Then you can paste the photo into Paint to save. That must be the dominant color on the figure. The second roll determines your secondary color. It should be the second color that catches the eye, and second most prevalent color on the figure. The third roll determines your miscellaneous color. This should be most of the accent colors that you use, and third most prevalent color on the figure. You might need to order paint or go to the FLGS after rolling if you don’t have a given bottle – we’ll be patient and wait for you. If you can’t get a bottle of one of these colors, here is a spreadsheet with equivalent colors from different brands. You are allowed to use whatever colors to shade and highlight that you want, as long as the rolled colors are obvious visually.* Example: you can shade a red dragon with purple, brown, or black, but it must always appear as a red dragon. A white dragon shaded with grey must appear as a white dragon, not a grey dragon. You are allowed to use colors outside the ones that you rolled, but they must not take up more visual surface area than any of the others.** Example: your pink, green, and gray dragon is allowed to have bone-beige teeth. The proportions of color on the figure can be however you want, as long as the 1st roll is dominant, 2nd is less, 3rd is less, and anything else smaller. Example: 70% pink, 15% green, 10% gray, and 5% anything else. Or it could be 50% pink, 25% green, 15% grey, and 10% anything else. The tidbit colors are fine wherever, as long as they are minor. Paint your dragon according to the rolls plus your tidbits. Even if it is outrageous. The goal is to make the dragon look as awesome as possible without the benefit of planning color themes. You can add spots, stripes, eye-spots like moths have, or nothing. This is the base challenge. Star 1* You may decide after your initial three rolls to limit your shading colors to your rolled colors mixed with pure black and white. You may still use tidbit colors. Declare this if you go for a Star 1 challenge! Star 2** You may decide after your initial three rolls to not use colors outside of your rolled ones and shading colors (so no tidbits like beige teeth, only 3 visual colors shaded however you want). Declare this if you go for a Star 2 challenge! Star 3*** You may decide to do both the Star 1 and Star 2 challenges, using absolutely nothing but your three rolled colors, plus black and white for shading. If you do this, you are allowed to use the white for areas like teeth and eyes that could be really weird otherwise (or not - up to you). Effectively, you have 5 colors to work with only, and three of them must be the majority (in decreasing order of prevalence). You gotta be nuts! There is no time limit on this. However, if the WIP photos stop showing up at a normal rate and there’s never a Show Off thread, the forum dwellers may gently poke fun at you for adding this to your Shelf of Shame. Post to the Show Off forums with a “_Your Pseudonym_ has completed the random rainbow dragon challenge!” sort of title upon completion. Brag about your awesome (or hilarious) dragon. Win all the internet-points. Receive experience and praise. Thus shall end the quest. Once the first Random Rainbow Dragon has been completed, we will start up a group Show Off thread to compile all of the dragons in a great flock of rainbowy goodness. An experiment in color-blending and washes. Wanted to evoke a different kind of flame than we often think of. "Giants and the Genii Multiplex of wing and eye Whose strong obedience broke the sky When Solomon was King." This is a truly fantastic sculpt and I love it. A cheerfully cruel expression, like a cat with a mouse. Yes, that is a Goetic sigil. Photos taken in natural light during the Golden Hour, unmodified. Armor is AP Rough Iron, GW Gehenna's Gold, and DecoArt Rich Espresso, with touches of Nihilakh Oxide and Nuln Oil. Skin wash was a mixture of AP Red Tone and some midnight blue wash. Came out a lovely bruise color. And a couple more shots for context and scale. "What cause, O Man, would you have to trouble Me with your summons? Great must your need be, or you would not bring such calamities upon the world." I could probably snazz those swords up a bit, but she's not too bad for tabletop quality!

This took over a year - mostly because I procrastinate EVERYTHING - but he's finally done! Contest Thread Combined Show-Off Thread WIP Thread Colors rolled were Blush Pink (I fudged and went to Breast Cancer Pink so that I can donate him to a survivor that I know), Brilliant Green and Heather Blue. I have yet to get around to building or acquiring something better for photographing these than printer paper leaned up against the paint rack, but other than that, CnC is, as always welcome.

I'm a bit of a glutton for punishment, so have managed to talk myself into another rainbow dragon... Since I have ol' Pathfinder Red sitting in the Drawer of Doom and no real plans for him, I thought I'd randomize him (not that I don't have enough other projects that haven't been finished (or even started)).. So, here goes: 3 Star challenge on Pathfinder Red (#89001) Primary : Blush Pink (although I might substitute in Breast Cancer Pink since I have 3 bottles of that from last month!) Secondary: Brilliant Green (needs to be ordered or fetched from the FLGS - I have Forest Green but that's too dark to match, i think) Tertiary: Heather Blue (do not have this, but do have a Sample bottle from a past order that is very close and will be used in its place.. I smidged some paint on a sheet of paper for comparison and have decided that Blush Pink is much brighter than BCPink, so I'll probably use the Blush (unless I decide to go thematic again and donate this fellow to a survivor since I know a few). Also, Forest Green is indeed way too dark to substitute in for Brilliant Green.. Here he is in all his boxed plasticky glory!

First off, I'm a complete sucker for rolling d20s. Second, I've been in a painting slump and can't be bothered to drag all my paints out to paint and/or I'm too intimidated to work on my other projects. Third, my hubby (a.k.a. Wise Kraken) has a conference coming up and is going to be out of town for the last week of September. I'm hoping that I can get my confidence and enthusiasm back if I do a silly project that doesn't require a lot of set-up or over-thinking. So here's the link to the rules post, I'll probably accidentally break some of them because I'm just not planning on stressing about this. Which is Orange Brown, Marine Teal and Imperial Purple. It's... actually really close to doing a colorful version of a bronze dragon. I didn't cheat, honest!! I'm short the Orange Brown, ironically, but it will probably take as long to order the paint as I'll take to prep the dragon. I haven't decided whether I want to take on one of the extra challenges, it might depend on how I feel or how well the colors mix. It's super tempting to shade with other colors from the same triads, mainly since I've already got them. Wish me luck, and feel free to gently prod me to work on this guy. I have accepted the Rainbow Dragon Challenge I will be painting 77110: Deathsleet To keep it truely random i will be calling on @pcktlnt to roll my paint colors.

I chose to paint Kyphryxes (still can't spell it). Rolled the colors mint green, olive green, and fire red. Replaced mint green with alien goo. So this was painted only with the following five colors (and red and green liner): Alien Goo Olive Green Fire Red Solid Black Pure White and here are the results: WIP is here. Kinda petered out at the end. and yes, it is pretty bright in person. Hope my next foray into random colors is a little less stimulating.

Why oh why did I read that forum entry? Sigh. I don't really have the time because I want to finish stuff for reapercon but I thought to myself... what's the harm in rolling and just seeing what colors I get. I can always procrastinate and never get it done like everything else... double sigh. kyphrixis needs some love. he's languishing in my box of bones. So... that corresponds to: 6, 1, 10.... Crap. Do you see the ginormous amount of chroma saturation in these colors? The sheer magnitude of intensity here staggers the Corporea mind. I mean... it's like taking the bestest of brightest shades and trying to make them work. I can't help it... it makes me want to make it work. To prove once again that you can use read and green together and not make it look like Christmas. To take three saturated colors and make them work together breaks all the nice little Corporea Color Theory Rules of Engagement! It says right here in my little handy-dandy power point that the only way to not make the viewer's eyes go all crossy is to at the very least use a complement with less intensity. I just can't take colors of the same value and use them and make them work. I can't... But I can't help myself... if I can make these insane colors work... I can become the COLOR THEORY MASTER!!!! Plus, unless it's truly cheating... I knows some sneaky sneaky ways to manipulate colors. So... can I mix to my heart's content as long as I just use these plus black and white? Cause that will let me shows these colors who's boss! Best way to take the mickey out of a color is to knock it down with its complement! just cause I can't help but do my usual explaining... here's what I'm talking about with my crappy photoediting from the computer cause I'm lazy: this is an image where I've removed the color saturation and just given us a grayscale. see how similar those colors look? that is because they all have the same value. value is something we don't always see when we first look at colors except to scratch our heads and know something is not quite right. These colors lack value contrast. I often use this example: see how the red and blue look similar but the gold and blue different when I take away their sneaky hues? When I put colors together I want colors with differing range on the scale of black to white- that's value here's the pic from wikipedia. does that make sense? They've taken color and mixed in black and white in varying degrees to make a color paler or darker... sort of. Which means, if you're willing to work with pure shades and black and white... you can make anything! Problem is most paint has filler and additives that muddy the range and do unexpected things when you mix. So... when I get three impossible colors... I must conquer them!!!! sigh. And here I was actually hoping to get that diorama done...

Rankin was playing in the floor and got covered in it so bath time for him. Looking forward to getting some imperial purple on him as well as the mint green the challenge will be adding the hints of olive green on him it's the challenge.

Stuck my thumb in the box of unpainted bones and pulled out a Kyphryxis. must unbag bag and dry fit, trim mold lines and scrub, but first, the random colors... 15, ah what could that mean? I'll look later. Let's roll another. seven! Good. Nicely spaced numbers. Will look it up in a minute. For the third roll... Well darn gotta wait for the full minute so the time shown is different... Finally! oof! One! Critical miss. Well, it's probably a boring color at the top of the table. Let's see what this means: 15: mint green 7: olive green 1: fire red huh. Whadaya know. Time to go see what I've got for colors... (To be continued)

My dragon arrived! Deathsleet for me! The Ebonwrath is for my BF. I rolled a 15, 9, and 3. Ooooh boy. This is going to get funky. Mint green primary. Heather blue secondary. Lava orange miscellaneous. I am going for the base unstarred challenge because this roll is scary and the last dragon I did was like... my 3rd figure ever, over a decade ago unless you count the fairy familiar dragon. Including previous dragon in pictures. Must have been early because it is unlabeled on bottom for number (I labeled soon after beginning to track progress). So yeah. The mint and the blue aren't so bad. The orange?! Uh oh!! My dragon is going to need some work on the base to put the plastic in place better. Thinking of connecting the foot bases instead of two spots on the ground. I have the blue, will buy the orange and green on Saturday. Scheme? I got some time to ponder that!

I had a lot of fun with this guy, even though I was initially a bit intimidated by the colors I rolled and am not thrilled with the scale pattern now that I've worked on him... Contest Thread Combined Show-Off thread WIP The colors rolled were 1) Orange Brown, 2) Cloudy Grey and 3) Imperial Purple and after a couple of base layers, he started to look too much like a pumpkin to not call him Pumpkin Spice.. It will be noted that I did a completely terrible job on the flocking - only my second attempt at flocking ever and doing it with a headache and lots of kids running around meant that I didn't notice until it was way too late that he's got grass growing all over his feet now! Also, pay no attention to the goldish mush-piles.. again, trying to mold with distractions didn't work out too well (not that I'm particularly adept at that either ) PS's frontmost foot was badly bent even after a boil bath, so I made him stepping on a shield. The shield, sword and bones were donors from the Ghouly Grab Bag since I got a 77242 Skeleton Warrior in my October order. oh, and I need a better photo-booth than white paper taped in front of my paint stand!

Painting a dragon with random palette of colors was a fun challenge. One of the most fun to paint this year. (tied with Hippo King) Contest Thread Combined Show-Off thread WIP Insomnia started out as a storm dragon, but I chose to go with ocean waves instead. I didn't have a sea dragon, and was having fun with water bases. at 3 weeks of painting it is the second fastest dragon I have finished. Really it just flew by, and I kept making more time to work on him. His name is Insomina because of more than the usual late or middle of the night painting sessions. was aiming at high tabletop quality. Officially rolled : Mint green, Cloudy Grey and Marine Teal with no further ado

So I've finally joined. Ebonwrath was the first dragon I managed to grab from my pile of Bones. Now assembled and brown line primed. Here are the results, based on my modified list. 15: Alien Goo, main 3: HD Fireball Orange, secondary 17: Solid Blue, accent So this is YOUR doing Pezler! Guess I'll try for the 3* challenge. It'll feel like my early days of painting when I owned a very limited palette.

Alrighty, she's done! Got "good" photos (still need to work on doing better there). Link to the WIP: I needed to do better on prep work. Her mold lines are pretty darn bad, along with some other metal flaws. And epoxying the wings damaged the skirt a bit and required touch-ups. Still, she was TONS of fun to paint. It will be nice going back to a semi-normal palette though that doesn't require a drop from every bottle. I'm glad I went with the brown and black outer-wear. Before gluing the wings it was a little funky, but putting those on pulled everything together I think. This figure will likely be a gift for a friend at some point. She was inspired by my LGBT+ friends who I adore and who are entirely rainbowful. She's here to bring them cheer. Aside from that, critique away! Happy to hear suggestions!

I started this figure for my friends celebrating this month. I have had the figure for many years, and the one I have isn't the best cast, but she'll be beautiful. Plan is to have brown outer dress, darkish hair, and rainbow wings. Tried a new eyes technique; I mixed Schubert's method with the Bette Davis method. DKS's guide has the eyes after shading up the face, and the Bette Davis ones are at the start, then cover the edges. I used DKS at the start instead of the end, so I can still meet the eyeliner as I fill in the face.

While waiting for water effects to dry (more boring than paint) I finished up a couple minis that have been on the desk for a while. His one here is a favorite. Got all rainbow inspired when painting up a great worm. This was the first mini where I'd used the sand/gravel and glue mix to "sculpt" a base. Had lots of rocks to stick into it as it dried. After a dark primer and light drybrush, I liked the look of it so much I didn't want to paint over it for a few months. Well I finally brought it back to the painting desk about a month ago and have been hitting the rocks with various leftover Browns and grays. I was not entirely happy with he underside until I thought to drybrush a fleshy color (suntan flesh) and it really did it for me. What do you think?

A giant armored predator that swims under the ground. You'd think it would be drab and dusty, resembling the stones and earth from which it springs forth. Well, not this one. more large images: See the process of painting this in the WIP thread

After seeing so many other lovely, albeit drab, takes on this model, I figured I'd do something to make mine stand out. Here, base-coated and a little crude shading under the dorsal plates: And a bit later, with the dorsal plates painted. There may be some tweaks after this, but that's pretty much it for the back. On to the flanks, legs, and face!

This is the fourth of the five dragons I've painted since February (which, by the way, are the first dragons I have painted since roughly 1985). Deathsleet is one of the bigger ones. I underpainted the entire dragon black. All of the color is from iridescent or interference paints which use the optical properties of microfilms of Titanium White on microscopic flakes of mica. The result is rather like the rainbow on an oil film or the inside of a nacreous seashell, thus I called this an "Abalone Dragon." (There was a wash of turquoise blue pigmented paint early in the process to smooth out some rough transitions. Apart from that, it's all optical effects. Oh, right, and I painted the rocks it's standing on normally.) It is extremely tricky to photograph this paint because the color effects change based on angle and lighting. I have a few shots of the same perspective with different lighting to show how it can change.
