I almost didn't bother posting these, but I went ahead and did so. Just some quick rats and spiders. The rats are from the D&D Castle Ravenloft board game, the spiders are from the Legend of Drizzt board game. To mix it up, I alternated colors between brown/dark gray/light gray. They came out a bit dark, but I guess that's okay for rats and spiders. Nothing spectacular, but they actually get used quite a bit (on the rare occasions when my group actually gets to play).

Okay...so it's just six. But that's enough to get the job done. The sculpted details are pretty low on these guys, but some washes gave them a little more depth. I went with two black ones, two brown ones, and two gray ones.

More of my backlog from summer. Vermina has a ton of detail, but it's hard to do grimy steampunk and make it all show up. I wanted to show her feminine and playful side so I started by making her clothing pink. She has rats around her feet and on her shoulder. I used this figure in a Shadowrun game as a street shaman. Always a few spots you missed that show up on camera afterward.

And to round out August, I painted the bonus mini from some October past (a blue clear bones wraith) and some rats for the new campaign. The rats look better in hand and the green guck on the base is more effectively icky... but they work on the table!

Even wearing some kind of clothes like a God-fearin' civilized creature!" "It looked around, sniffed the air a bit, and made some squittering noises and trotted off back where it hade come from, and me and the Moggett just stood there in shock. We couldn't have seen that, sure! But we had. And I reckon it must have been a scout of some sort, for soon out came three more of the beggars, walking like men and tall as I, carrying weapons and wearing armor! Lucky thing I hid in an alcove, for they started poking around and soon came across the dead rats we'd put paid to already. They weren't too happy about that, if I'm any judge of rats, and I am." "After a bit they turned and went back too, and the Moggett and I got to thinking as maybe we should leg it back to the sewer entrance. "Only took one look back on the way, gentlemen, with their squalling and squealing behind me and the Mogget, fur all on end and tail like a bottle-brush, galloping before me and yowling to wake the dead, but I saw 'em, dozens and maybe hundreds. Saw what must have been their leader, too, a great brute, big as a big man and wearing a helmet what was all knives. Think there was one or two in robes like what a wizard would wear, but can't swear to that with all the confusion and the light flickering every which way. Be that as it may, we sprinted up the ladder, slammed the manhole cover down and rolled a cart atop it, and then got blue-blind paralytic drunk on enough brandy to piss a new sewer. Well, I did, not the Moggett. But it weren't enough brandy to forget, then or ever, and ever since I bring man-traps and bear-traps down with me if I have to go underground. And that's my story, gentlemen, and ye'd be wise to mark it." Boren Backslap is an amazing character, with a cloak of rat pelts, a mangy cat bigger than some dogs, and a trap/varmint hutch. He looks like he's settled in the New World and would also work well in a Weird West setting. GW makes incredibly elaborate sculpts, and they know ratfolk like few else. The dynamically-posed fellas on the masonry bases are from a Shadespire pack, Spiteclaw's Swarm. They acknowledge no law but the law of the claw. Probably could have punched them up a bit more with weathering and such, but was on a self-imposed deadline. Word to the wise: the lesser ratties can be painted easily enough once assembled, but Spiteclaw himself should probably get the inside of his cape and his backside painted before assembly. Learn from my mistakes! The little ratling with the torch is from a Pathfinder grab bag. Tail broke off, so I replaced it with a pin, as I've done before ( https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/87661-ratsy-and-the-varmint-boys-crooked-dice-plus-50320-50209b-03577 ). The rubble and additional rats are from a Terraincrate mine pack; the rat swarms are Nolzur's. Lastly, the rat-wizards and surly/unmotivated rat soldiers are from Black Tree; part of their Ver'Men line. I love me some rat-men, and the ears and the bent noses were irresistible, even if the sculpts lack the finesse of the Skaven around the feet.

Am getting into the new Frostgrave based game "Rangers of Shadow Deep". The spiders are the smaller Reaper Bones spiders. The rats are from Black Tree Design, and the zombie is an old Grenadier miniature by Mark Copplestone that I brought from EM4. All basic paint jobs, tried to have a bit of a lighter pallette on the spiders in particular, and wanted to make sure they could be used for Frostgrave as well.

Finally got this guy done. I did the base some time ago, for a competition with water bases with no mini (I didn't win anything). Any comment and critic is very welcome. Thanks for looking.

Supposed to be 6 of these - I dunno where they other 3 went, likely in with the Frostgrave stuff as wandering monsters but anyway, I did a fairly quick paint of the others. Here they are in their natural habitat:

I years of thinking about it, I bought an airbrush system last week. I've never airbrushed before and everything I've seen says to take it slow and plastic before using it on a model, but I'm too impatient for that. I started with the Bones Rats. Then moved to the Bones Deep Ones Then experimented with shading using the Bones Spawn of Shugniggurath. Then went big with the Bones Mashaaf. Its actually harder to learn than I expected. Luckily I have lots of Bones to practice on.

I had the opportunity to play some Dragon Rampant last weekend at Huzzah, a convention in Portland, Maine. I decided that it was time to get these figures off the painting sticks and into play. DR calls for 6 figure units for war beats and cavalry, but these rats are small enough that I decided that 6 bases was a nice unit of measure. The two large swarms are single piece castings (01-045 from Iron Wind Metals), and the outrider bases are the DF-106s, originally scultped by Julie Guthrie. This was a speed painting exercise; total brush time was just under an hour, and they were, as you can tell, mostly dry brushed.

Continuing the creature feature, here are the great big Barrow Rats: Not quite undead but thoroughly nasty anyhow. These will see use as wardogs in Frostgrave. 77198: Barrow Rats Reaper Bones KS2, base set Sculpted by Julie Guthrie Bonesium PVC 30mm bases

Got a bit of the horde done, I tried for a pattern on one rat, grey and black. I also painted one a kind of tawny colour, which was in honour of my awesomely sweet rat of some 20 years ago, Whiskers. He used to sit on my shoulder and watch me at the computer or whatever I was doing. I really miss that little guy, such a shame rats just don't have the life span of cats :( although I guess that'd make the wild kind a bit more dangerous overall. Anyway! The middle guy here is Whiskers ^^

I was inspired to paint this model on top of this base, pure due to her triumphant pose and her size. Not entirely happy with the face (my Bones version was a little lumpy) and my x-acto knife job on her boots, but she was a lot of fun anyway!

My latest fix order arrived, and I was sick of painting gnolls. A very quick paint of some rats and rat swarms.

Painted back in January, for table top use. Unfortunately I need new lights and my camera is MIA so crappy pictures with the desk lamp and phone it is....../grumbles CC always welcome and yes the "Boss" rat is the one with the skull. 1st level adventurers beware!

Hello all! I've been wanting to paint these Bones Rats ever since I saw the reference picture for them like a year ago. The other day I finally sat down and did it! (All in one sitting to boot!) (Also pictured: 77054: Galladon, Male Wizard and 77049: Arthrand Nightblade, Elf Ranger, of whom I may do their own topic, as their my first mini's of 2016, and I'm quite happy with them! BUT I had more fun playing with the Rats!!) Since I did it all in one night, there was no point in a WIP topic, so if you wanted to see the WIP, click on the Spoiler: And on to the finished rats! We have some Albino rats, some black rats, some plain brown ones, and even some infected rats! Much of the basic style goes once again to the reference image from the Reaper store page. I feel they turned out pretty well! Normally for my tabletop playable miniatures, I'll finish them in a gloss varnish, then go over that with a matte varnish, to give them the best blend of protection and finished style. In this instance however, I opted to just go with a single coat of the matte (brushed on via Liquitex Matte). I know, not as protective, but it should do the trick. Plus even the first coat on 12 rats was surprisingly tricky. I'm glad I'm not a Warhammer player, I do not envy having to paint whole armies! Anyway, time for some fun! And thats the rats! Thoughts, comments?

Finished these gross guys for my pathfinder campaign. I like the GW blood for the blood god technical paint look for weeping sores.

Quick and easy, and all a bit different.

I've started painting minis again, since this winter. I used to do some in my twentys but did not take the hobby seriously as i do now. For the last few months i've been furiously looking for my old models without success, until today! They are ral partha pewter models from the 1990's. I did not remember i had the rats , the neanderthal and the rhino, it was quite a surprise when i found them. The paint is chipped but i will remove it & redo'em. The wizards and the storm giant were done without primer, had no idea i should do that back then. All the models were done without the use of a magnefying glass, wich i do now. It's interesting seeing one's past work from 20 years ago. I wonder if i should repaint my very first ones or keep'em as is? This is a trip!

Finally painted a Bones 2 mini! . . . but it was just a skeleton. Also some Bones 1 rats. Thanks for looking!
