Hello everyone, A new piece of work. This time it's a WWII themed diorama, 1/72 scale (which makes around half the size of a 28mm figure. The diorama itself has around the size of two smartphones. The whole project is my entry to a painting competition in a German forum and the first finished work since February 2020 - so one year ago. The main model, PzKpfw IV Ausf. J, is almost 25 years old. I got this model when I was a kid, and I painted it thickly using email colours, but I never assembled it. Last August, when I moved, I found the model and gave it an overhaul, and when February arrived, I took my time to paint it, do the figures and the diorama. As always: If you like what you see, and you have nothing more to say, leave a like as a nod to my participation in the forums. I don't need "nice", "cool", "excellent" or "awesome", because those words are used way too frequently to mean anything. // // When I have got time, I need to get some plywood to cover the outside of the diorama, but, to be honest - I am way too lazy to do it now. lol. And now for something completely different. Normally, I post figures (or I rather try to post some figures), but this time, it's a bit bigger. My "longtime" WIP is done (you can find her in my "Speed-build"-Thread. Check out ->here<-) This project started as a commission. A colleague of mine was in the navy back in the days, and she was on board of the Karlsruhe when the vessel still was in service. When she left the ship, her comrades gifted her a model - but, as she is no model builder, the box was laying beneath some shelves never to be assembled - that is, until my colleague found out I had done model kit assembly for like 20 years or so. So she gave her precious kit to me - and I foolishly took it, believing the vessel and I could make love, not war. The kit intended otherwise though and that made my journey a rough voyage. When I started in February 2018, I didn't believe it would be a ride like this. I fought my way through glue, colors, sweat, tears and blood (literally). I think up to this date, this was THE most difficult kit I ever had to make. This old lady by far resisted every building step I made - and even after finishing her I had so many problems holding her together that I am glad I am done now. Anyways - it was a great experience and I learned a lot of things - especially regarding weathering and diorama building and I value what I learned. Here's a group of 20mm Bunderwehr soldiers which I did for a skirmish game. They are from Revell of Germany and Elhiem miniatures. Special emphasis was laid on their Flecktarn camo as it is a very distinctive pattern and is absolutely horrible to paint in such a small scale. But I think it came out pretty decent. Enjoy!

I finished up two more stands of fantasy Vikings for more portable 1/72 scale campaign set up. These are intended as “Blades” for Hordes of the Things, so I grouped all the two-handed axes I could get out of a box each of Zvezda and Orion Vikings and possible Revell Saxons. This puts me up to twelve bases for the ‘army’, with three to go, so I’ve got enough to swap the order of battle around a little bit between games.

There are times that I wish I could concentrate on one project at a time, but my muse apparently doesn't work that way. In preparation for Huzzah last weekend, I finished two stands of 1/72 scale plastic Vikings from a mix of manufacturers. I have been painting these guys fairly carefully, basically one at a time. This is partly for my own amusement, since you can't see some of what I'm doing with them under actual game conditions, partly as a thought experiment about future downsizing of my hobby space, and partly, of course, to be trying to get an army on the table for my planned solo war-games campaign. The bases are 6cm by 4cm.

My older son (now 27...) has been up to visit twice in the past month or so. Because of the portability we found ourselves playing an old favorite, Hordes of the Things, using 1/72 scale plastic armies assembled from an eclectic variety of sources. In my usual scattered way, my muse led me to pull out a delayed project, a Hordes expansion army of fantasy-ed Viking barbarians. My troops, if they are ever completed, will be assembled from a mix of Revell, Orion, and Zvezda figures, mixed within the units. These two are Zvezda. I'll go back and collect pictures of the rest of the finished figures later...
