Got some pics of some terrain I painted up over the past few months which were still accessible. A good chunk of my collection is currently packed away so just some pieces that I'd left around and snuck into the various christmas stuff around the house. Warlord/Italiari Stone Bridge A rather nice kit that is somewhat irritating to get together correctly with the various parts that need to slot together...just 6 pieces, 2 each of 3 different parts (Sides, and two parts for the top and underside of the bridge). The ridge in the center of the tops of the sides is one that is a pain to get any of gone, but at the same time, if you do, you end up removing all of the detail that makes it look like stonework. The detail on the top and bottom of the bridge is also shallow and rather difficult to do much with for drybrushes unlike the sides of the bridge. It's still a nice looking kit with rather minimal issues and most minis stand just fine on it at any point. Tabletop Workshop Dark Ages Chapel Another good kit, though I think that there were issues with the one I got. It has a sculpted interior that I wanted to set the kit up so that I could access it...but the inside was poorly cast with large areas that would have required extensive work compared to ones I've seen in various YouTube videos over the years. It's also one that I couldn't find anyone selling it in the US and needed to pay a decent chunk more for shipping from the UK...I'd love to get their other kits, but they're not worth the cost and international shipping for them. Alicorn Statue I'd found a decently scaled unicorn/pegasus toy at Dollar Tree a few months ago, sold in 2 packs with one that was the right size to repaint for use as a mini and a giant one. I just found a cheap wooden plaque in the same store for the larger one to use as a statue. I have two more that I need to grab a base for because they aren't restocking the oval ones and the others would work well for a paired one. I've been using the smaller ones as part of a Dragon Rampant force. The mini included for scale is Human Druid, Asandris who is painted to work with that force which is composed of, mainly, Anhurians...most of which are put away due to not yet having everything back in place after replacing carpets. Statue of Man-At-Arms Another Dollar Tree thing with their He-Man toys, just a bit to large to fit in with the majority of my stuff, so I shaved off the more techno bits from his gear and painted him as a statue, gluing him to a wooden disc from the craft store with a bit of painted card as a plaque on it. Unfortunately, I couldn't get a very clear pic of the front, camera just wouldn't focus right. Sacred/Memorial Stone Just a quick terrain piece that I put together when I needed a rune stone or similar immobile piece for a couple scenarios. It's, mainly, foam that's been heavily textured and coated with plaster while being attached to the 2" Nolzur's bases. While I loathe those bases for minis, I've found that they work great for smaller scatter pieces that don't need to be moved around the table that often. Barrels A rather quick paint and base of some craft store wooden barrels, again on a 2" Nolzur's base. I needed something to mark for a supplies objective in a game and just tossed it together when I needed it. I'm probably going to be making a few more similar ones. Rustic Cabin This is completely scratch built save for the shield which came from a Fireforge Games: Foot Sergeants kit (Same as the shield on the Sacred Stone). I started out making this following the tutorial from Mr Waaagh Media on YouTube's channel with a few changes to fit most of my minis, then decided to upgrade the design with wood and add a fireplace...which led to making a removable roof and playable interior. The tutorials on the channel are decent, but aimed more for beginners and I tend to see a lot of them and things to heavily upgrade them into things that look a lot more a part of the table. The Old Promontory Garden Ruin This started with the structure on top as something from Dollar Tree, it was, originally, just a brightly colored lantern, but the shape reminded me of the old garden aviaries, so I removed the light and started building up from the base to create something that would look like it fit and in the old, abandoned feel for it while retaining some playability and something that would work well as a piece to display some minis on at home. It also pushed me to experiment with other options for larger rockwork as this was, started and largely built last year during the major lockdowns and I ran out of the thicker foam that I would have turned to for it, and used layers of foamboard from Dollar Tree for it. Largely shaping it after assembling the general form and adding a lot of texture work to try for rock striations with patching compound and small stones worked into it to add more to it as I went. I think it ended up working extremely well and I'm considering other formations and structures that might work as an addition to this since I have another of the lanterns that I haven't done anything with yet. Marsh/Swamp And two large terrain pieces that I put together relatively recently. They're designed that I can hide a bit of the edges of the two with the bridge from earlier as part of a setup in a few ways for a bridge across a swampy/marshy area or be used on their own or individually in parts of a board. I started with a large, but rather thin plywood circle from the craft store, then I used the card from a larger box of soft drink cans that I cut to form the basis of the drier areas, then I worked in larger stones and patching compound to smooth things out, worked a few dried and sterilized twigs and some different sands glued over it before painting it up. The lilypads are made by taking a 3x5 card, painting it up with a mix of different greens, letting it dry and going to town with a hole punch before using scissors to cut a notch in them and putting them ontop of the polyeurethane gloss that I used for the water with a tiny bit more gloss ontop of them. I still have a pile of them put away for later use from the card.

Love these little guys, they are so cute and evil looking at the same time. This is the Bones version. I previously did two metal homonculi, who will be happy to have a new pack member.

Thanks to everyone who passed on swampy/marsh basing tips. Experimented with a few and got an effect I liked. My jungle Tatzlwyrm now has some suitably wet ground to lurk in.

Huge predators roam this place so a smaller creature needs to be smart to survive. Here we can see the Common Swamp Crocodile, the poor creature would stand no chance when a T-Rex or a Spinosaurus would spot it. So it adapted to it's environment. It's behaviour reminds me a bit of that of the Hermit Crab, in a similar fashion this little crocodile finds himself a piece of rotten wood, preferably a treetrunk and sticks it's head in it. Then it rolls around in the fertile soil so mushrooms, grass and flowers will grow on it's hide. This way it will be invisible to the larger predators. Unfortunately, as we can see here, that tactic proves futile against the Amazone Warrior who is in dire need of a new purse.

So this past February, I got around to painting up these Bog Skeletons. I was in need of more swamp zombies for Rangers of Shadow Deep and had these guys laying around and figured it was the perfect excuse for painting them. Though I am a big fan of bog-bodies, I decided to lean more into a swampy look. I figured they could be a bit more colorful and I got a strong vision of a green-tone horde of skellies. Plus bogs are notorious for preserving bodies and these guys missing quite a bit of their flesh, organs, and hair. More Below the Spoiler: I had a lot of fun working on these guys. They're very colorful despite being monochromatic and I think they're among some of my best work. I tried out new techniques and pushed my skills. In the end I have a group of evocative minis that really imply a setting beyond the limits of their bases. I couldn't be prouder of these bone-boys. I also recently shared some photos of some of my earlier attempts at painting skeletons. It was really fun looking back at where I started - especially since these models are very similar to the Skeleton Guardians. You can check out my old skeletons in the Show-Off post HERE.

So I finished the Undead Regiment. Background story.. the Vampire Queen lost a big battle, fled to a swamp/jungle area. Subdued the swampfolk and now faces a rebellion. Some swamp creatures follow her, others oppose her. Here is the full regiment. Mixed Manufacturers. Mixed types of Undead. I will post them separatly or in smaller groups for better pics of them all. I will try not to flood the forum, so today the regiment and the first solo/smaller groups. The rest will follow shortly. The Vampire Queens heraldry is red and purple so all the Undead have this colours somewhere. Also as a sign she is mistress of the swamp, her heraldry has a snake in it, variations are found on the shields and banner. Now the horde:

Hello everyone! After seeing @Kangaroorex Grenadier 9601, Black Dragon, I decided it was time for me to salvage mine from the shelf of shame. Thanks for the motivation Kangaroorex. This model was sculpted by William Watt in 1988. Unfortunately, the one I bought some years ago had a few battle scars. It has a broken horn and a broken wing claw. Its main tail stinger and tongue were also broken. As a reference, the base is 75mm wide.

I loved everything about this guy from bones 4 pictures to delivery to painting to result!

Hey, all! Its been a little while and I finally sat down and painted something. I put these guys together and I'm really happy with the shading. I wanted to put some water on the bases, so I tried wrapping them with plastic and pouring realistic water in. It... did not go according to plan. The water cured unevenly, shrank, left weird tide lines, partially peeled off... Basically everything that could go wrong with it went wrong. Luckily, I had sealed the model before pouring the water, so I was able to peel it off with an exacto and some tweezers. I salvaged what I could and I think they still look pretty good.

I wish my phone camera could get better photos of this mini, but the contrast is so wide that it just doesn't want to cooperate. I wanted to practice some OSL, and I chose violet. I also wanted to try building a different kind of base, and the wraith seemed like it would look at home in a bog. I think the back turned out better than the front. I may go back and deepen some of the front shadows at some point. Tips on OSL and other things are welcome!

It took a bit to get here, but I finally got the latest tutorial out. This video shows how I go about making swamp bases. Let me know what you think.

I don't usually use so much gloss varnish and not the most exciting array of colors, but I think I captured what a wet, stinky, dirty ol' swamp troll should look like.

I used a little water effect on the base to make it appear more swamplike. And I clipped off some plastic aquarium plant pieces to paint as jungle plants. hey all! hopefully am posting in right place. I'm after Bones minis that fit a swamp theme. I've done the Figure Finder, and got my first order in already (frogs, squogs and mushroom men). I'm designing an RPG encounter/adventure in a swamp to go on my swamp board. So in a way the RPG is going to fit the minis, which are going to fit the board, which is probably a bass ackwards way of doing it but it is fun :D These are some of the ones I've picked out so far for my March order: 03146: Frog Men (2) 02630: Frogmen 77273: Dragon Hatchling Black 03243: Swamp Shambler 02678: Swamp Hag 02496: Swamp Shambler 03694: Swamp Dragon Hatchling I'm just wondering if anyone has any others that would spring to mind, that would fit a good marsh or swamp theme? (Not all of the above are technically bones) So far I'm working with a kind of frog/squog village, a swamp hag encounter (who will be controlling the shamblers) and a couple of dragon babies, because why not. I'm thinking about doing a mushroom forest idea and putting the mushroom men in it too. Anyway, appreciate any other thoughts =D

My latest project, complete. You can find the WIP thread here. I did an experiment, using ridges of dirt flocking to hold in water effects. It actually worked out reasonably well, though next time I'll know to build up the rest of the base more. I also decided this one was female, on the basis that she's noticeably larger than the other two. I'm rather happy with how the shield came out here. It looked a bit like a horseshoe crab to me, so I wanted to make it look nice and chitinous, as though she tore it from the back of some great swamp arthropod. My first freehand. It was supposed to be an anchor-shaped tattoo to start with, but I messed that up, and decided to just go with an abstract design. I cheated on the pupils for these guys. I bought a micron pen, and it worked out rather well. I probably would have gone with a solid color for the eyes, otherwise. This was the only one to have any sort of decoration on his integral base. The others are pure broccoli, but he's got a little plant on his. Gave it a nice pale green color to contrast with his scales. The color is actually a mystery paint Reaper sent me. I actually have two bottles of the stuff, from two orders from around the same time. I'll be sad when it runs out. It's a very nice color. And here we have his turtleshell shield. I actually looked up pictures of real turtles and cobbled together characteristics of several species for the color selection and pattern. And here's the whole happy family, together. Touching, really.

Recently decided to paint up McTavish from Malifaux. I don't play the game, but I wanted to paint an alligator. Definitely gave my greens a workout on this one. I'm really happy with how the belly scales came out. I used tusk ivory and then the GW sepia wash, then re-highlighted with more tusk ivory and a little linen white.

Two of Reapers metal Dragon Hatchlings. Although they are listed as Fire and Swamp hatchlings, I didn't exactly paint them that way. They were for a friend's up and coming Dragon Island campaign. Should be a nice addition the the battles to come. They were more of an experiment in colors for me and may end up painting one of Reapers larger dragons using one of their color schemes.

Not sure where this belongs, but I could use some advice on it so here it is. I'm working on this for my pathfinder red dragon that will actually be green ;^). The logs aren't glued down yet and they will have some moss growing and a splash of realistic water on them. It seems like it could use more detail...just don't know what. This is my first attempt at anything like this so I am at a loss. Any suggestions to improve it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This is the Bones figure 77267: Kallaguk, Troll King, who I keep thinking of as a marsh or swamp troll. He is a bit wobbly. His ankles are very thin and he tends to tip forward (as might be visible in a few photos). On a flat surface instead of a plinth he is straightened out by the spike on his club. I think he would have a difficult time balancing in any material except Bones. He was part of my year-end round up and Conga Line of finishing half-done figures. Folks this is the lovely Bones troll that Pochi sent me for the fall exchange. I am sorry for the delay in posting pictures but the Troll suffers from weak ankles and I had to let him lean back to get decent pictures. ( bassically stood him on his side and let gravity do its thing). After taking these pictures I will be attempting to stiffen up those ankles so that he can stay upgright permanently! Fair warning this is picture heavy as there was sooooooo much on this mini and his base I just couldn't keep the number of pictures down. I also apologize for my poor photography skills ,,, I have none! First the full mini in all its glory! Next the main character Please note the lovely choice of colors and the blending is just excellent... (also as some will note.. there is Orange!!!!) and the drool.. (well done) And now for the supporting characters: the Iguana: the Butterfly: The log and skull: The rubber? plant with a small creature as well. These are frogman warriors from the new Bones II Kickstarter figures, sculpted by Jason Wiebe. Like the accompanying frog shaman, these critters are full of character and interesting detail. I painted them up like common meadow leopard frogs, the sort of spotted green ones I played with as a child, because they seemed a bit big and burly to be tropical tree frogs. The one with the spear and human-face-shield is 92681; the one with the fork and turtleshell shield is 92682. WIP thread here. Just as a side note: Does anyone know how to make it so the pictures in the post are nice and small but we can click on them and see a larger one?

This is the mini I painted for robinh for the Fall Exchange. It is Kallaguk from Bones II. Robin asked for a monster and said he liked orange (grin). I tried to work some orange in here and there. I tried to paint him to look somewhat amphibious. Robin's mini got to be my guinea pig for several things I have never done before. This is the first sculpting I have ever done and the first time I have attempted water. Both turned out ok, I definitely need more practice but overall I liked the finished project. Some of the pictures make me cringe because they seem to shine giant spotlights on places I could have done better! I really did like how he turned out and am going to have to get another to paint for myself. My favorite part - the drool! I hid lots of little things in the base. There is a fish skeleton in the water between his feet, a chameleon, a stick monster, another little monster lurking under a bush, and a sheep (or demon) skull. Lots of pictures, I will post some in the first reply. Hopefully Robin has better pictures than I do. I am not a very good mini photographer.

These are two turtle warriors from the Bones II Kickstarter. I glued them to fender washers for weight and balance before painting them. The color palette is more muddy and earthy than normal for me. I wanted to make them look like alligator snapping turtles, the terror of my youth. One of them has a greener shell because that's a natural variation. The turtle shell shield is painted like an Eastern Box Turtle, an inoffensive little North American forest-dwelling turtle. WIP thread here.
