Does this guy have an official name yet? I've seen him referred to as the "Big Scarecrow," but I've just been calling him a Pumpkin Golem. Anyway, he was a really fun model to work on. I wanted the head to seem Tim Burton-esque. I feel like I pulled it off somewhat. I also wanted to make sure the head and scythe blade would stand out as the primary focal points (hence, the relatively drab colors everywhere else). I was really happy with how the straw came out, but painting each individual strand one by one took for-EVER. I made sure to get a shot of the base before I glued him on. I know that, realistically, the corn stalks shouldn't be such a vibrant green come harvest time. But, I felt it would work well with the green coat. Plus, let's face it, there's NOTHING natural about this abomination. Anyway, thanks for looking. Comments welcomed.

My pumpkin issues continue to develop. When I decided I needed to do something non-HeroQuest I rummaged through the Big Bones V Box and grabbed a few things. This is the second one I've finished. I'm not going to go into a longwinded bit about the colors. I've got most of them in paintRack, though, in case anyone has a burning curiosity. I might not be 100% on the base, though I should be close. Overall, I felt like the jacket was originally part of a uniform, so I tried keeping that in mind when I did the colors. And since the pumpkin is orange, I wanted a nice contrast (which means I was going to select a blue for it). And you can't really tell it, but his teeth are metallic. I figured if you're going to go through the trouble of animating up an ogre-sized scarecrow, why not splurge a bit for some extra chompatude. This one was lots of fun, and he painted up nicely (I think). I still wonder what army got their ogres in fancy getups like these. And a shot of the base because it deserves it. I've got to admit that I was a bit confused by it, though. To my eye, the stalks looked fresher than the fall theme of the pumpkin might suggest. I decided to go with "fall" and make the stalks nice and dried out. The skull is a nice touch. I accidentally clogged the nasal opening, though, and my brief attempt to fix it didn't work. I ended up just accepting it. The detail on the corn is a little shallow, the same with the skull. I'm sure I covered up more than a little bit, but I'm not exactly painting for display or competition. I'm just trying to do a nice tabletop (maybe a little better) level. Thanks for dropping by!

Just in time for the season! I happened to be going through some sort of a creativity crisis. I would start on a figure and almost right away stop feeling it. This guy seemed to shake me up quiet nicely. Although, I did get tired at the end and rushed a few things. But, as I remember, the profys recommend "paint more minis" as oppose to sitting over one for eternity trying to get it to perfection.

And once again, Halloween and the Coming of the Great Pumpkin are imminent! To celebrate this (and my new painting area finally being functional.) I present Fellclaw... A relatively easy paint, although I did have a moment of confusion concerning the knife in his belt, as I initially mistook it as being folds in the cloth. and here's a comparison shot with Reaper's Rotpatch scarecrow.. One of these days I'll have to put together a cornfield for them to lurk in.

Another one bites the dust….😆 One of my favorite sculpt…but in the old Bones plastic. I put a little extra into the base, otherwise it was a pretty straight forward zen of Bones quick paint job. Overall I like the scheme and it has given me ideas for when I paint my metal version. Not sure about the green face and the blue glow under the rib cage is too subtle. And as an aside …..the quality of Testors Dullcoat is not nearly as good as it was a decade ago. The newer formulation continues to give me a semi gloss finish. Oh well.

Hi all, Continuing on my not so subtle theme a a group of 4 Gauntfields with colorful taste in coats. The 5th Guantfield is one I painted at RC 2018 random paint - just added a few touches to it at home. That was fun.... and came out rather well considering the random colors and need for polka dots on the sickle!

B:GCC - Mission 16 "Like Father, Like Daughter". Orphan tries to stop Scarecrow from helping Orphan spread weird toxins/chemicals throughout Gotham. It makes me wonder who the heck comes up with superhero names in DC, and why someone would go by Orphan if her dad is still alive. Anywho... I stopped painting for a bit due to lots of unrelated things (like Borderlands 3 coming out for Steam). Now that I'm working from home, I can get back to painting regularly. And B:GCC Season 2 just arrived so my dream of painting Season 1 before that showed up did not pan out. Father, Daughter, and Scarecrow Orphan (Cassandra Cain). Not someone I know much about as far as Batman lore goes, but seems interesting. Not sure how she's an orphan if her dad is still alive... Painting her was a bit tough, as some of her details were pretty small. Orphan (David Cain). Another person I'm not too familiar with. And I hate painting white so...not a fan of how he came out. Scarecrow. I LOVE how he came out. One of my favorites of this series so far. He looks so pale and weather beaten. Mr Bloom's Gang. Unrelated to the story, but I need to speed up my painting game, so I'm adding one henchman/police group each time, even if they aren't involved in the story.

"If ever you chance to go to the woodsBe sure that you go by day,Or the Spindly Man with his long thin armsWill spindle you clean away." Scarecrows. The purpose is to inspire fear. For crows, the idea is that it looks like a human. For people, the issue is that it doesn't quite. Gauntfield is a truly horrific sculpt. For one, scale creep aside, he's very tall. Over eight foot in scale, if I were to judge. For another, his hands are way too big, coming down to knee level. And those hands are clutching a sack full of bones. That's a red flag. Oh, and he's a reanimated skeleton with a jack-o-lantern sack mask. That sadistic grin! the flapping tatters! The sculptor is very like Gauntfield himself, in that they are both... ...outstanding in their field. "When it comes to SURPRISES in the moonlit night..." A Bombshell promotion netted me this Autumn the Scarecrone. Less overtly skeletal, but still a construct of cloth and straw given malign, shambling life and carrying a sickle. Tatterdemalion, rag-tag, hobbledehoy. The crow on her hat is a nice touch. Her paint job and color scheme are loosely inspired by Sally from "NIghtmare Before Christmas." Bonus: Bombshell's Pumpkin Pal!

B:GCC - Mission 11 "Major Gas Madness" has Scarecrow as the major villain to beat. You need to find his toxin formula and escape before you croak. There is a lot of deadly gas about (surprise) so you need to be careful. There were no new heroes to paint in this mission, so I painted up a set of thugs instead. Scarecrow and Hazmat Thugs Not the Scarecrow I'm familiar with, but a cool one nonetheless. Fairly easy to paint, although sometimes the paint seemed to not want to stick to some difficult to reach areas. I thought Hazmat Thugs would be a nice combo to paint up with Scarecrow. I was debating on what to do with the area of plastic between the strap and the gun. Do I paint it black? Or light blue? or white? Or yellow? In the end I decided that these guys were minions so who cares. Black was the least amount of work and looks good enough for what they are on the table for.

I plan on posting something a little more friendly looking very shortly. coughwyrmgeardragoncough but in the mean time I painted this for fun and practice! Also would take some advice on dealing with small details like a face. On this miniature it was nearly impossible to just paint specific details of the face without smooshing the entire face with paint. I'd wanted to give the figure blood red eyes. That didn't work out and I ended up painting over the face in white to start over again. I do overall like how this miniature turned out. The bones aren't crispy perfect white, the clothes look like a creature that's been walking through mud and dirt for a long time. Didn't know how to paint the base so I went with some of my extra black wash which worked out as it sort of made it look like it was standing on bone. Tried a new technique on the scythe. I did the base coat as filigree silver, then I did a paint of dragons blood red, then when that dried i went over it again with the black wash to give it this dried blood effect. A technique that is probably standard but one I personally just learned by experimenting!

So, I went to Origins this weekend and entered the Reaper Speed-Paint. I was only supposed to be at the con on Friday and Saturday, but I paved on Friday and won my Saturday semifinal, so I called in sick on Sunday so I could compete in the finals, where I managed to pull off a win. Friday was the scarecrow, Saturday was the hobgoblin, and Sunday they gave us the Jungle Titan. I'd already painted two of the three before, which certainly didn't hurt when it came go time. I didn't get a chance to get pictures in my photo studio before heading out on vacation, so these are the shots I took with my phone at the convention. We had 45 minutes in round 1, 50 minutes in round 2, and a whopping 60 minutes in round 3.

Been feeling the Fall season, and have wanted to try a rough burlap texture....soooo here comes Patch! first time making a corn stalk from raffia, it's not bad but I'll need more practice before truly jazzed with it. The pumpkin is from the Reaper Pumpkins set. C&C always welcome!

I bought the Steampunk Wizard of Oz set for my daughter out of the Bones 3 KS. Naturally, I am doing it last minute for her birthday Tuesday, the 18th. So, here's the plan: A. Assemble them all on unfinished but sealed silver maple wood cuts using usual building materials. B. Basecoat them with simple but muted colors. C. Apply Sepia Wash and paint as needed to simulate a "colorized movie" look. Here's what we got so far: Dorothy and Toto on a Compass Rose beginning their adventure. The witch commanding her monkey. Dorothy glued in and brick road applied. Lion and brick road applied. Enjoy and stay tuned. More to come.

Gauntfield, Necropolis Hero "Harrow, Reidlar of Terror" I bought Gauntfield to specifically use him as my terrifying Reidlar (embodiment of emotions/thoughts), Harrow, for my custom campaign, Markshire. The miniature was perfect for the character ... a detailed scarecrow with a scythe and a bag of bones and other tidbits who pulls unwary adventurers and children into his "Courtyard" to terrorize them with his smaller scarecrows stuffed with raven feathers and twisted ash sticks. This great miniature by Bob Ridolfi was based on a metal slug and I slowly created an eerie, dead tree from skewers, rocks, green stuff, and finally green putty. Then after it was assembled and painted, I decided he needed a pile of leaves around his legs. Ones drawn together by his magic so you'll see traceries of fell yellow magic outlining the leaves. Gauntfield, Necropolis Hero Yup, another WIP. Gauntfield has been in my kit for years. He has received most of the excess green stuff from everything I've ever built. I wanted the scarecrow to be standing behind a tree trunk, gnarled and dead for many years. So I started out by applying him to a base that filled the space up to his feet on the slot bottom he had and built the basis for his tree. As you can see, I used two skewer pieces as the center posts and set the "fork" of the tree I was looking for. Then I placed terrarium rocks around it to fill out the bottom of the trunk. Then over the years I scraped on any excess green stuff I had from projects. Tonight's effort was the eye of my Undead Dwarf. A very tiny amount of green stuff. Which is a little hard to mix and create at that size. It was smaller than a pin head. So the remainder went around one of the upright trunks from the tree of Gauntfield. Then after some thought on my efforts to create a bark exterior I decided the whole tree needed a skin and fill of some of the unnatural sections of green stuff. So I got out my green putty and went to town on the surface of the tree. I had primed the scarecrow and tree earlier so I just went right over that. You'll notice that the "skin" added is a bit rough. I'll go over it in a bit and clean it up once it's set a bit more. If I like the appearance of it, I will prime that and move on. If not, I will go over that a more until I am happy. Green putty is also a great product to smooth over a surface. So I made some of the sand around Gauntfield smooth with the putty while I was working the tree. Green putty dries really quick so within a few minutes I can sand the surface of it with my thumb or stiff brush. I have an old toothbrush for this. So, here's a second skim of "bark" with the Green Putty. I cut off the excess bamboo skewers and created a branch collar on each end where the trunks would get overgrown with the bark. Just below the saddle of the two trunks, I added a third trunk that has broken off and left a branch collar using the Green Putty. You can see that I "sanded" some of the skin and added more. Stay tuned.

This is my Secret Sophie painted min for Tarsemina who requested "Preferably something spooky/creepy, maybe campy creepy" It has arrived at its final resting place but I did manage to remember to tale some shots of it before I packed it away... Hello, so I decided it would be fun to do a Halloween type miniature for the month of October, and had picked up the Wild West scarecrow a while back, and paired him up with a Secret Weapon Miniatures Creeping infection base. I'm still thinking about the color scheme so I would not mind suggestions at this point since I don't entirely want to go with the usual earth tones across the whole thing. Thanks for any input in advance!

Hi Ive just finished scarecrow from rackham. Its one of the most intersting sculpts i have ever seen. Tommorow i will post better pictures in daylight. Comments are welcome AS always.

So there was something about Gauntfield that really attracted me. It wasn't just that he looked evil, but that he looked so damn happy about it. There was something very joyful about the sculpt - that and the lines of action on it really made me want to paint it. So I did. In particular I wanted to do him up in very "autumn" colors - a lot of varying browns, a lot of red, and a bit of orange. I took a number of pictures from a few different angles: Incidentally, the spots on the underside of his hat in picture 2 was a bit of the metallic that got there. I covered it after the pictures, but it wasn't worth taking a new one, I think. Questions, comments, and criticisms welcome!

Hi, I made my first freehand, and im very proud of it! Mini is not finished but im so happy because of painting that i need to share. Maybe somebody has idea for base for him? I have to do his mask, face and boots and swords.

So, alas I didn't have the funds to order any of the others, except Chibi Sophie who has not yet come, but with Halloween tomorrow I felt it best to post these tonight. Jack. Patch Esme. And standing with his minion it's The Great Pumpkin Impact miniatures 'Pumpkinheaded General' These guys where so much fun to paint, and I do regret not being able to get more, but funds where not in it for me. Maybe in the future they will show up again.

Hi all. This is my not entry into the Halloween contest which is a RAFM scarecrow. I decided that I wanted to make the pumpkin head really look like it's glowing so I used a strong contrasting color to yellow (the highlights of the pumpkin), purple, and then desaturated to make the scene appear at night. This makes the head seam much more intense. Sadly I had painted up the pumpkin on the base before deciding this route so I did bring them down some but not enough, and I didn't want to repaint them so I tried to bring them down which doesn't quite come off in the photo but it works on the mini itself. C&C always welcome.
