  1. Finally getting around to posting a couple of pics from the winter exchange. I snapped these right before I boxed it up and sent it out to Kangaroorex. I hope he enjoyed it. This was my first exchange project. It was also my first completed attempt at doing basing for a mini. I just did something fairly basic and I think it turned out okay.
  2. This is what I painted for Teskeria for the 2016 Secret Sophie exchange. She said she liked dragons and the colors purple and pink. I started with the green dragon hatchling, I wanted one that looked like it was attempting to fly, and this one seemed to be sitting up and paying attention. I built up a little cork hill for Cassie to be standing on, demonstrating with her staff and her arms thrust wide. The base has little hillocks covered in static grass. The bushes and flowers are real dried miniature plants that I pulled out of my dollhouse supplies. Both figures are removable for play. Hope you enjoy!
  3. Working on secret sophie gift #2.. thought I'd try out the new light box a bit too..
  4. This is my Secret Sophie to Klarg1. He asked for some monsters he could use in his campaigns. I thought it would be neat if he could have something for land and sea so an antkeg and a Hippocampus was selected. unfortunately the Hippocampus would not cooperate and come off its working plinth so it is a little more of a showpiece than playing piece. I hope he doesn't mind. For me at least, the hippocampus has to have one of the most challenging textures to work with, both in finding a way to give it life and just being hard on the brush. I know I killed at least one brush on the sharp edges of that surface. for colors i tried, with some success, to copy Hiesler's color scheme from here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/59839-impact-miniatures-hippocampus/?hl=hippocampus the antkeg was much easier to select colors for and i really like how the piece came out. It should suffice to give the players a scare and the floor drops out from under someone and they find themselves in the loving embrace of that scaly monster! Anyway here are the pictures from the two minis I sent to him. hope you all like them!
  5. Okay so... Spoilers and such if you don't want to know don't look you may get spoiled. Alright then, so I decided to do pirates. It fell into what my partner wanted and why not? Here''s a picture of when I started I went with Bergo Ironbelly; because why not? He wasn't your typical pirate, it'd be fun. Then I decided he was a rather small figure, so why not pickup a partner in piracy for him? Now when removing Bergo from his base I had a mishap involving his ankle. It broke.... When getting basecoats down I tried to fix it with superglue, green stuff, etc. *Sigh* While I tried to remedy this problem I got down to work on Jamesy (The other pirate). Unfortunately for y'all, I sat down and did much of him in one session without breaks... So, no major progress photos. Sorry... After getting bored of Jamesy, I decided bases would be the next mountain to tackle. After an elf ton of drybrushing and various shades of brown and bone, I think it looks okay. Might go back and mess with them, probably will. Then it came to me what's a pirate without a peg leg. Now, I suck at sculpting I intend to remedy that next Reapercon but for now it's true. So, to remedy the ankle dilemma I got some green stuff, concentrated, and put a peg leg on Bergo. It's not beautiful but it's workable and it stays on! I also got quite a bit of painting done on him... Again, bingey painting so no step by step progress pics. And then finally recent progress pictures of Jamsey I've been messing around with the shading a bit and just generally doing the small bits. So yeah! That's what I have so far, I think they'll be done before Christmas and definitely before New Years. I need to up the contrast a bit more (I think I'm starting to lose the midtone on Bergo...) work on the back of Jamsey's coat, because right now it's kinda iffy. I need to finish the small bits that I've been dreading. (Bergo's eye!!! So teeny tiny) and attach them to their respective base. C & C always welcome and appreciated! (Sorry for screwy photos towards the end)
  6. This is my current project for my Secret Sophie exchange. If you don't want to spoil the surprise then do not open the spoiler! But if you do and want to comment please feel free, as any advice to make it better will be appreciated. PLEASE DO NOT quote this post and remove the spoiler tags... that would ruin the surprise... thanks
  7. I managed to get my winter exchange piece and gifts to vegascat in time for Christmas. Since he sent me a heartfelt thank you directly and I know she made it I wanted to post up some of the photos I took before mailing her off. I will let vegascat share photos of the gifts if he chooses and just post the painted miniature. I had alot of fun painting her up and quite enjoyed keeping her to a limited palette. I am happy he likes her and that she made it safely during a busy mail time. Here she is on her scenic base alongside the Golem Familiar from 02826. And I wanted to keep her removable in case he wants to use her for gaming. I enjoyed painting her quite a bit I think my favorite part was her skin, I used a bit of purple pink in the shadows which I think shows better in hand and then glazed it with a rosy flesh to help make it a bit warmer while still looking cool overall. I will have to pick her up again and paint one up to keep, she is just too pretty of a sculpt not to.
  8. I've been sculpting a thing. The original WIP thread can be found here. I've been making progress, but really need some feedback in case I'm doing something really wrong. Here is the latest: Comments, critiques very welcome. This is my first sculpt ever.
  9. In the category of "Better late than never", here are a couple of pictures of the miniature I painted for the Winter Secret Sophie exchange. Since I was running late, I only snapped a few pictures before boxing her and shipping her off to Jasper the 2nd. He may be able to supply a few more shots of the details. (There are also a few WIP pictures on my blog here: http://blindmetalminis.blogspot.com/2016/02/enough-terrain-paint-figure.html) Jasper specifically asked for examples of NMM, and female skin tones, so I tried to pick a mini that offered lots of opportunities for both. I'll admit that Monique might not be the greatest example of the latter, since I made her extremely pale, and gave her a slightly bluish pallor, since she's , y'know, dead and all. The brown/black armor NMM was an experiment for me, but I'm pretty happy with how it came out.I may try playing around with similar colors on future figures. I welcome your comments and suggestions!
  10. Welcome everyone, to the 2015 Secret Sophie thread! What is Secret Sophie, you ask? Well, it's a lot like Secret Santa, with a more attractive (albeit more dangerous) delivery person! (For those not in the know, Sophie the Succubus is Reaper's mascot.) This is the time of year for Reaper forumites to give a little holiday cheer to each other. Unlike most of the exchanges we do on the forums, this will have two categories - miniature and gift exchange and gift-only exchange. Signups will run from November 1st to November 10, with the assignments going out around the 15th. If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. The organizers (fanguad, ub3r_n3rd) then match you with a person to whom you will send your gift/mini, and another person from whom you will receive a gift/mini from in return (sometimes it's the same person). You have until the deadline to send your gift/mini out (though we tend to be fairly lax about enforcing deadlines; remember it's supposed to be fun!). That's pretty much it, feel free to PM me with questions. The Rules (tl;dr version) Gifts should be primarily new, Reaper-branded presents. Exchanging painted miniatures is optional. Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. The deadline for non-painters to mail their items is December 31st. The deadline for painters is January 15th. This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations. Full RulesDecide whether you are doing gift and miniature exchange or gift-only exchange."Gifts" are Reaper paints, unpainted miniatures, or other Reaper painting supplies. Recommended dollar value of gifts is $25 or less. The miniature exchange is where you paint a Reaper miniature for someone and mail it to them. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. Non-Reaper items may be included, but the focus of this event is on Reaper items, so keep them in the minority. Fill out the appropriate sections of the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Please fill out the current version of the questionnaire, Please don't just send an old one, as questions may have changed. I am going to be a little stricter than normal about filling in all the questions and may send it back for clarification if you don't. Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't. Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline. Let an organizer know if you are going to be late. This thread is for official business/discussion only. That includes stuff like questions for me, or updates like "I mailed my package", but discussions about what to send or how awesome the stuff you received was should go in the chatter thread. In the past some people have wanted to send food - please verify allergens, etc. with your partner before proceeding. If you are mailing internationally and plan to send more than just miniatures/paint, you must contact your recipient to get any "bonus items" approved. We don't want any trouble with customs. As an example, plant matter or powders can cause a lot of trouble. The organizers (fanguad, ub3r_n3rd) can help facilitate any anonymous conversations you want to have with your partner. Have fun! Deadline The deadline for mailing gifts is December 31st, but if you can get it out before Christmas, that's even better! The deadline for mailing exchange miniatures is January 15th. Assignments Deadline The organizers will send the assignments out in about two weeks (November 15th). Please let me know if you're interested by the 10th. I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements. Exchange Assistant ub3r_n3rd will be helping me run this exchange. He will coordinate and communicate with approximately half the participants. You can contact either of us if you have any questions or issues. We will do our best to pair you with someone new. Another situation is that you know certain people in real life, and would prefer to paint for someone you don’t know. -Special Requests- For the organizer, your painter, or your recipient: Also, if anyone has a holiday-themed miniature you've painted that I can use to grace the OP of this topic, send me a PM with a link to forum thread or inspiration gallery entry.
  11. This is the figure I painted for Traxia as part of my Secret Sophie gift. I did some minor modification by adding one of the Bones familiars to her shoulder.
  12. For Secret Sophie this year I got Klarg1 and he was looking for something Sci-Fi. I'd had an IMEF Bulldog that I'd been eager to paint since it first came out (Big Stompy Robots!!) but never gotten to. So I ordered myself another one and started in on it. I decided early on to go with battle damaged, so I could use both the pilot and the hatch, and so I could try out painting some damage. Then after Christmas I needed something to paint at work (and had just received a bunch of new military triads from the 12 days of Reaper) so I grabbed a couple of IMEF troopers to work on there while I was finishing the Bulldog at home. I'm pretty happy with how everything came out and I'm pretty sure the rest of my IMEF are going to get painted in a very similar fashion.
  13. I finally got my light box put back up. Here are the photos I took of the awesome 2002 Christmas Sophie that Miss Melons sent me for Secret Sophie:
  14. This is the miniature I painted for SGHawkins09 for the Secret Sophie '15 Miniature Exchange. She requested Christmas colors, so I obliged. Conveniently, the same colors as my Koldun Lord. I gave her a decorative base, which started out with some bark someone gave me at ReaperCon, but I think my attempts to put snow and gravel on it made it worse than just the bark painted up as rocks. Not my best face (and of course the super-closeup makes it look worse)... all my army painting recently made it a bit difficult to get back into the groove of painting as nicely as possible.
  15. These are some pictures of a Yeti/sasquatch/bigfoot/abonimable snowman that I painted for SamuraiJack in the 2015 Secret Sophie Winter Exchange. I'm very proud of how he turned out. And, though you can't see it, both his eyes are looking in the same direction (!) which absolutely thrilled me. Looking at it now, I could have pushed the contrast on the fur even further, but I was happy with how he looked and decided that he was a perfectly recognizable sasquatch. So there he is! Hope you like the paint.
  16. This year I got Leopardpixie as my Secret Sophie partner and part of what she put down for inspiration was high fantasy with vibrant colors. I had just seen Nyrissa the dryad queen in the Reaper store and thought that she would be perfect. I really wanted to play with color so I went with bright green and purple. In all, I am very happy with how it turned out.
  17. This was the mini I painted for Siri, 02835: Jolie, Female Scribe. Also added to the vignette was the Imp w/Book from Familiars II (14087), the Crystal from Kal'Valanis, Lich Queen (03187), and a couple of books I had in my bits box. The vignette is on a (Foundations 2 sample) 50mm flagstone base from Forge Prints. I don't have the part numbers for the Reaper parts, since the Boneyard is down right now. In her request, Siri stated that she liked purple, so purple she got: As always, c & c welcome. EDIT: Apparently, I like to take pictures before I finish things. The books have writing in them now.
  18. The survey mentioned unicorns or winged beasts, nothing boring or pink. I had done winged creatures for my last 2 exchanges ... I thought unicorns need to come in more colors than just white (good) and black (evil) how about bay? and what if I included a woman with the same hair and skin colors? I originally planned for the three on a single base, but I couldn't make the positioning work. Instead the unicorns and warrior got their own bases, but using the same technique, so they could all be occupying a single meadow. I am pretty sure I went back and fixed the paint chipping, visible in these.
  19. So here is the Peryton that I painted for Inarah's Secret Sophie: Lots of pics, so Many Thanks to Ub3r_N3rd, Vegascat, and Xherman for acing as my sounding boards during my WIP! Comments welcome! (If anyone would like, I took lots of pics, and could do a retroactive WiP.... Most copied from pms!) George I must say that I was not very happy when the mini arrived, as the way it's left leg is up, and it is balancing on it's right leg looks kind of awkward to me. The way the head is tilted seems odd as well.... The wings fit to the body quite well, with very minimal gaps, but the way the left wing almost touches the antlers made it difficult to paint... There were other places that the mini seemed to get in the way of the paint brush as well... There was a mold line down the right eyeball that drove me crazy, as I didn't find it until I started on the eyes!!!! But in the end, it grew on me, and I am pleased with the way it came out. G

The deadline for non-painters to mail their items is December 31st. The deadline for painters is January 15th. This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations. Recommended dollar value of gifts is $25 or less. The miniature exchange is where you paint a Reaper miniature for someone and mail it to them. Non-Reaper items may be included, but the focus of this event is on Reaper items, so keep them small. Fill out the appropriate sections of the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't. If you want to keep your participation a secret, make sure that you don't post in here or the chatter thread. Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline. Let an organizer know if you are going to be late. This thread is for official business/discussion only. 22. Happy New Year Reaper Forum! This is the figure I painted up for the 2014 Secret Sophie exchange and sent to Fanguad. I actually hadn't ever seen this particular sculpt before I started browsing his wish list, but it's a very nice sculpe. One of these days, I need to paint up another one for myself. I can't say that I did anything super new or original, but it's a fun piece, and it lends itself to a lot of different techniques. I hope you enjoy it, Fanguad!
  23. So, it's that time of year again. Instead of running another painting exchange at the moment (which would run into next year), I've decided to do a Secret Sophie (secret-santa-style exchange) again. Here's the rules (shamelessly stolen from last year's exchange by MS): Alright, down to brass tacks. If you want to participate DO NOT post here saying you're in. You can post here with questions, with comments, or suggestions, but I think it will make it even more secret and fun if no one knows who else is in on this. Rules! 1. PM me with the answer to my short list of questions (See Below) and you're in! 2. This is an exchange of Reaper products only. Feel free to add other things to the box if you want, but the main focus is on Reaper's miniatures. 3. Nobody is required to paint anything! Part of the fun is that this will be quite simple to be a part of. 4. If you want to reveal your identity, wait until they've already received their gift, please. I'll be with-holding the identity of your recipient on purpose, but if you figure it out, or know it from previous exchanges, please don't let the cat out of the bag And that's it! The deadline for this will be shortly after New Year's day to get it in the mail. The actual holidays are way too busy to count on shippers getting the package there reliably, plus everyone is just plain busy. This should give people who want to paint some time to paint, as well Deadline: 7th of January, 2014 (Tuesday). PM me with this info. 1. Name and Address (Of course) 2. If you would like to paint for your recipient - But keep in mind, painting takes time, so if you don't think you can make the deadline, just send a naked mini. They'll still love it! 3. If you can ship internationally 4. What you are interested in receiving (or if you have no preference); this includes things like material, genre, style (if any of those are important; "Whatever" is good too!). And there you have it. Questions, comment, suggestions all welcome, but remember, keep your participation a seeeecret . *Assignment Deadline* I plan on getting assignments out by Nov 19th; that'll give us about 8 weeks to pick a figure, paint it if we want, and mail it out. Please note, if you have already signed up for an exchange in the last year, I should already have your info, so it need not be included (unless there are changes!). -Dave Edit to add Question 4. Also, how do people feel about a $ limit on this (assuming one is buying new minis). I've seen that for other secret santa/white elephant exchanges. Edit 2 to correct Deadline date to the correct year (can't time travel 'til I get that Bones Police Box), and add assignment deadline for myself.
  24. DHL Rumscratch, Dwarven Wereshark Secret Sophie Present for MatrissaTheEnchantress When I first found and started Rumscratch I was kind of stoked to work on him. I used y usual shale basing and went with coral colors. I got off to a great start getting the base colors on Rumscratch himself but I really was having trouble getting his shark coloring to work so I set him aside for a bit. When I got some feedback regarding the items Matrissa wanted I thought, Rumscratch. I am glad MatrissaTheEnchantress enjoyed her Secret Sophie present and she can use him as a creative NPC for gaming. Give it a thumbs up on the Inspiration Gallery.
  25. Bones Owlbear Secret Sophie Present for Kay13 Special thanks to those who mentioned using straight pins to adjust drooping Bones minis, including MiniCannuck. I shoved a pin up the Owlbear's single leg touching the ground to get it to stand upright. Here are the photos: And here's a closeup of the base: First I cut off the front of the integral base and trimmed it to better sit in the round base. Then I smooshed some of the MagicSculpt that came with my Happy Seppuku stamps. Once I had that level with the remaining integral base of the owlbear, I removed the owlbear from the piece and stamped the base with the Happy Seppuku Bones stamp. I got the partial skeleton in there. Then when the putty was cured I replaced the owlbear to the round base and covered the edges of the integral base with greenstuff and hid the edges with manual texturing using a toothpick mostly. Once that was cured and I had finished the owlbear I painted the base as you see above as a kind of swampy, moss covered mess. I'm glad Kay13 liked it and can't wait to do another Secret Sophie. Give it a thumbs up on the Inspiration Gallery.
