  1. I entered this at DiceFest 2023 and managed to take 3rd place in the enemies division! The competition felt steep, so I’m pretty happy. I went for an underlit OSL effect. I imagined it as light from a torch dropped by a terrified explorer as they stumbled back from this encroaching horror! It’s a big figure, dominating the 3” base he’s sitting on, so it took forever! C&C welcome!
  2. While the “tongue consortium” on this guy was crying out for some sort of airbrushed transition showcase, I wanted something I could knock out while visiting with friends. So, with a limited palette, terrible lighting, more than a few drinks, and great company, I managed to bang this creature feature out… I finished the base after getting home, so I got a few little ink blasts of purple to give the dark stone a little ambiance.
  3. I have been playing Doom Eternal lately. Several stages within some of the missions are set inside massive demonic fleshy creatures or structures with organic tunnels. Organic as in made of living meat, like a skinned carcass, with giant meaty blobs, bladders, tendons and instestines everywhere. The floor covered in pools of acid...one can only imagine the smell. Naturally, this made me want to paint up some of the minis for the Shadows of Brimstone Belly of the Beast Otherworld. This otherworld is just such an organic hellscape, set inside the entrails of some enormous cosmic creature. The Belly of the Beast Expansion rules, cards and map bits come in the "Temple of Shadows" expansion set, an expansion for the japanese-themed Forbidden Fortress base set. The Skin Crawler minis are also included in this expansion, while the Gastral Tyrant, Bone Eaters and Acid Blobs each are in their own little enemy packs. I have at least the flesh mites still to do, and I am thinking some more giant tentacles would fit this theme well, if I can find them. Maybe even some of the new, japanese-themed heroes too. This lot took me a couple of evenings to do, mostly drying time in between prepping the Bones 4 Lost Valley Expansion minis. Lots more pictures below.
  4. Minivember is here once again! I know that today is the 5th so I'm going to have to play a little catch up as I was on vacation until yesterday evening. Now I need to get started painting so this will probably be a shorter intro post than previous years. You may ask why the title says "The Last." Well because this is the last year that I am going to be doing Minivember. Next year I'll have a new fun thing but it will be in October instead of November because of how busy this time of year is for me. And I know that the holidays are part of the challenge but it's getting to be too much of a challenge. This year I'm going to be painting minis from Shadows of Brimstone that I have not yet finished. My goal (like every year) is to paint at least thirty (30) unique minis, one (1) for each day. While I've reached this goal in the past I'm going to push myself a little further this year and try to get all of one type of the mini painted. Some of them have up to six (6) of the same mini. I chose to paint this because I want to play the game again and this is a great time to get it done. While this is not all of the SoB minis that I have to do it is a good chunk of them. Anyway, here's this year's calendar and I'll be posting photos as soon as I can.
  5. So in the last...year? We have received the second wave of our Shadows of Brimstone Kickstarter pledge. We went all in and opted to get everything. I haven't started painting anything from it. I've primed most of it but just haven't had the drive to do it until now. This is the pile of sprues fresh out of the box. Then the cleaning process. I'm not even sure all of them fit into those pictures, I know the second picture is definitely not all of them, that was just the first wave that got cleaned. There's something like...137? minis there if I counted right. This is in no way everything we have but just what we got in the final wave. Well now the company ran a second Kickstarter to expand the game even more (I already don't know where to put all this so let's buy more!). Which should be shipping sometime this year. That one also, again if I counted correctly, has about 181 total minis. So I'm swimming in minis that need painting so I thought I'd start a WIP to motivate me. I've already got most of it written out and color schemed. The nice thing is a lot of the minis that are groups of 6+ or larger came with painting guides that are optional. I'm opting to use the ones that are available to me. I plan on using mostly the paints that came in the Shadows of Brimstone paint sets by Army Painter with a smattering of Reaper here and there. I'm going to try to get this all done before shipping of the second Kickstarter. Then it'll be time to build and paint those!
  6. The 20 resin heroes from wave 1.5 of the Shadows of Brimstone kickstarter. I believe there are 12 or so more resin heroes and companions to come in wave 2. A note about the resin used. I see that there is a lot of internet-hate directed towards the resin models, mainly because of the greasy release agent used not being easy to remove, and that many people prefer plastic for ease of gluing and such. I think many of the complainers are boardgamers more than miniature modellists, which I certainly can see these models posing problems. My experience was that with a good scrub in warm soapy water, most of the release agent went away. A few of the models needed an extra coat of primer here and there, as I had not gotten the release grease properly off everywhere, but with that extra coat on I have had no problems. In this they are not really any worse than other resin models I have worked on. One problem was that many of the parts were small, and had very small gluing surfaces (e.g. wrists to arms) but I got them stuck together by using activator spray on the superglue to make it bond quickly. Luckily the resin is lightweight, so gluing a small joint is actually enough to hold the part. (Many of these would not have worked with metal miniatures!) I avoided the small feet being small gluing surfaces altogether by using the vent-sprue bits still attached to the feet of the models as pins to fix them to the bases by drilling matching holes in the bases and cutting the vents to size instead of all the way off.
  7. Here is a link to my blog where I posted all the photos. I didn't want to just stick them all here since there are quite a few and didn't want to overload people with photos. The photography and lighting definitely isn't the best but I'm working on that. Thanks for looking, C&C welcome. https://sparrowmarieminis.wordpress.com/2017/04/20/shadows-of-brimstone-resin-minis/
  8. Freshly washed, only 4 of the 20 heroes need repaired. The 3 villains still need assembled but I thought it best to scrub them down before gluing. Next up: primer test.
  9. Here is a link to the War Chief figure I painted for the game Shadows of Brimstone. Here is a link to the War Chief character illustration for that game. The figure I started with was from Reaper's Savage Worlds line: buckyball
  10. These are from one of the three enemy expansion sets that were added to the KS as paid add ons in the pledge manager, as the stretch goals for them were only just not reached... so they made them anyway and charged extra for them. As I wanted the lot, I added them, using some of the late minecart credit I got. The Trun Hunters were delivered in the wave 1.5 shipment, and are one of the few enemy types yet released that have a ranged attack, which certainly changes the dynamics of the game. Anyhow, what's not to love about bloody great big lizard aliens with scifi armour and blaster pistols? and there are three of them in the set: Since we all know what lizardlike aliens like to eat, we know exactly what they are hunting for, don't we? I wonder which 80s TV show these minis remind me of? Incidentially, this is where Shadows of Brimstone most markedly moves away from it's Wild West starting point, passes through the Tentacular Horror Void of the Dungeon Dimensions and lands squarely in the Twilight Zone of Sci Fi Mash-Up country! Pew Pew! Even more so than the WW1 type Trederran Raiders, or even the wintery Targa Otherworld where the ancient robotic guardians are stirring...Yea, verily, the void portals lead not only to other places, but also other times. 11. Stuff, and things. Started a WIP, but I suck at keeping up with them. I always get too involved in painting and don't stop to take photos. I had to mess with the brightness a bit, there was a lot of glare, even with the diffused light source. Here's the end result: As always, C&C welcome!
  12. Amongst a great deal of other stuff in my wave 1.5 KS shipment for Shadows of Brimstone, I received "Caverns of Cynder" as the first complete Otherworld Expansion beyond the two game sets. The expansion includes boards, cards and rules to play in the molten, volcanic Cynder otherword, including 3 miniatures of a new Large enemy type, the Lava Men. and there is three of them in the set: I think I am getting better at doing a burning/lava paint job. This time I started with white all over. Then a heavy bright yellow drybrush, followed by golden yellow, then thinnish dark pink (Which sounds strange, but try it! The pink blends in and looks excellent on this!), followed by a dark reddish brown and topped with black. Each layer of drybrushing slightly lighter then the last, getting a magnificent gradient effect. This works really well when the minis has details to match. The paint job looks bad until the last couple colours are put down, when suddenly wham! Also it takes no time at all! 13. So. I've decided that this year instead of participating in National Novel Writing Month, which I have never successfully finished, I'm going to paint a mini a day. I've still got a ton of bones laying around from the Bones 2 kickstarter that I want to get done before Bones 3 gets to me. I also want to finish painting up what I have of Shadows of Brimstone before the rest of it gets here as well. If all else fails I plan to paint at least 30 unique minis by the end of the month. I've laid out a calendar and some rules for myself. Rules: 1.) Must be roughly human sized, 28-33 mm or larger (horizontally or vertically) 2.) 1 sculpt counts as 1 mini. 3.) Prep beforehand is totally permitted (washing, boiling, priming, gap filling, removing mold lines, etc) 4.) More than one model a day is great! But it doesn't count towards future days. 5.) 24 hours for one mini only 6.) Take pictures of time and date before and after finishing each mini. Must include mini in both pictures. EDIT: This will be a very picture heavy thread. EDIT 2: Here is where I will be putting my show off threads once I get around to making them.
  14. This was my mini that I worked on yesterday (11/6). I think he turned out pretty good for a few hours of work. He could definitely use a few touch ups though now that I see better pictures.
  15. Here is my mini from 11/4. I still have 2 more of these to paint up and am hoping I can replicate the results.
  16. This is from yesterday (11/5). He was a super quick paint job, less than 2 hours. I was hoping to get all 6 of them done yesterday but that didn't happen because of my cold.
  17. These are my least favorite models in the game. Not completely sure why. Nonetheless I got them done in time. They are less neat than I'd like them to be now that I look at the pictures so I may go back when I have time and touch them up a bit. Day 2 Day 3
  18. Here is my mini that I painted for day 1 of Minivember. For the amount of time I spent on him I'm pretty happy with it.
  19. I did this yesterday as a quick paint. Took about an hourish overall. I'm pretty happy with it, could probably use a few tweaks here and there. I'll pull out my light box later and post it up on my blog for a better quality, I just took it with my cell phone for now.
  20. I really have far too many miniatures. At least 20, and with a further 20 inbound from the 20 kickstarters I have backed the last few years. So for 2016 I will try to crank out those minis at an elevated pace, and chalk up an even 366 -one for each day - finished by the end of the year. Of course, this means that to avoid spamming the excellent reaper forums with samey, production-line dross nobody really wants to see, I will not be posting each and every one done here even though the rpchallenge says I should. Instead I will post Reaper minis and maybe some other that I find interesting enough. The rest will get pictures linked to the rpchallenge monthly post for anybody who might be interested. so.... I am pushing to finish off the Shadows of Brimstone game sets, and without further ado, here is the final miniature, the end-of-level-boss from Swamps of Death: The Harbinger from the Swamps of Death game set! A stonking big winged greater daemon for the end boss and largest single miniature I have seen in a boardgame! Wing span as a large dragon and far too big for my backdrop! It says alot that it has to squat down to be able to reach our intrepid adventurers... Aaaand... the Shadows of Brimstone sets are both complete! Group pictures to be found on my blog for anyone interested. The Harbinger from the Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death game set Flying Frog Productions HIPS plastic 60mm base

I am pushing to finish off the Shadows of Brimstone game sets, and without further ado, here are the Heroes of The Shadows of Brimstone! City of the Ancients: Saloon Girl - Bandido - U S Marshal - Gunslinger Swamps of Death Lawman - Rancher - Indian Scout - Preacher For some reason, I always gravitate towards the monsters and creatures in a game such as this, and I find the heroes to be a bit...meh, I simply do not find them all that interesting. This means I tend to put them off until the end. And that they tend to get somewhat uninspired paint jobs... And it must be said that they do look much better IRL when not magnified like in the pictures. The Preacher is the same one I painted last year, and is in the picture for sake of completeness. This completes the City of the Ancients game set. So, all that is left is the big winged demon thing from Swamps of Death, the one that is so big it needs to squat on its haunches to be able to reach the heroes...but how to paint it? I am pushing to finish off the Shadows of Brimstone game sets, and here are the latest batches I have done: Gives a new meaning to "puking your guts out" doesn't it? The Goliath, who is the end level boss from Shadows of Brimstone: City of the Ancients. A greater daemon sized tentacled horror, Hard as nails in game, and usually does not appear alone! Presumably it feeds by vomiting its tendrilled aesophagus onto it's intended food, and then slowly digesting them from the outside, or maybe it just captures and pulls its' meal inside? The heroes are not sticking around to find out! 60mm base The three Slashers from Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death. Giant Lobster Ogres, much like Mirelurks. I have been putting these off because I could not decide on a paint scheme. In the end, I decided to start them off as vaguely lobster-like and just wing it. I think what I ended up with works well. 40mm bases. Here are the Void Spiders. Nasty little extradimensional bugs, and numerous. There are 12 in the game. I have been debating myself about how to paint these, and settled for a tarantula-like scheme. Sinister and simple, but with a splash of colour. Also, I chose to paint the frontmost tooth-lump as a single baleful eye just in the corner of the maw. Quite unsettling.
  23. This year the minis I manage to paint will all count towards the resolutionary challenge. As per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread. With the refurbishment of the old house complete and it now up for sale, I have at last some time to paint a miniature or two. It has been more than a month since I touched a brush smaller than two inches wide, and I have come to the conclusion that I utterly detest redecorating houses, especially everything that involves masking tape. Out of all the heroes in Shadows of Brimstone, the one I always found most interesting is the Preacher. Might have something to to with me often playing the Cleric in AD&D back in the day. So here is Father Patrick "Dies Irae " O'Murphy. Ready to Kick Arse for the Lord! The Power of Christ Compels You! As per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread. I must say that I enjoy painting the Shadows of Brimstone miniatures, even though many have soft details. Here are the remainder of the Hungry Dead, the last 7 of the 16 in the game. Hatless Cowboys, bearded prospectors and saloon ladies in their best dresses have all succumbed and become the Hungry Dead. (Which is such an evocative name, especially as other such adjectives such as "Living" "Evil" and "Walking" are taken.) You know that you don't want them to get close to you. As per the resolutionary painting challenge guidelines, I will post them here, and link in my post in the challenge thread. First lot out, Six more of the Giant Tentacles from Shadows of Brimstone. I went for a "Simple Squid" colour scheme instead of an "Easy Octopus" this time around. Not much more to say about these. apart from MOAR TENTACLES!
