Paints shall be shaken! Brushes shall be splintered! A glorious day... A Seven day... Ere the deadline rises!!!
  3. Not gonna lie, I'm really nervous about this one. I may be making a terrible mistake, but I am going to be attempting to paint this giant 5 headed dragon in 7 days with a size 0 brush while working my usual work schedule that tends to run around 56 hours. I will have a 3 day weekend to end it out, but I originally wanted to take a solid week off to do this, but my work situation may be changing in the next couple of months - nothing bad, mind you, but I might not have as much time off as I have in previous years and I'd rather not wait until the holidays to see how things shake out. Let's be real here, doing this particular challenge while working a 56 hour week is not just crazy, it's stupid. But it's what I have to work with and I am probably both crazy and stupid. I have the added complication that we are probably going to get a lot of throw off rain coming over from Harvey and my area does flood, so I may lose even more hours if I get stuck at the office or stuck in the grocery parking lot waiting for the water to go down. Or the power could go out and I will have to paint by candlelight. Everybody keep your fingers crossed for me that such things will not occur. So here's my version of the roolz. If you're new to the 7 day challenges, take my version only as an amusing thing to read and check out the Official rules here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69639-7-day-goblin-challenge-official-rules/ 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 5 is right out. Once the size 0, being the correct number, be reached, then lobbest thy size 0 brush towards thy foe, who being made of Bones, shall be painted. 2) 7 full days (168 consecutive hours) from when the timer starts are all the time that is allowed in this challenge; whether that time is spent working, sleeping, painting or sobbing uncontrollably is up to the participant. The timer starts with the posting of a picture of all of the many pieces of Ma'al Drakar and the intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing the participant's local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 7 days (168 consecutive hours) later or whenever the task is declared as completed prior to time running out, or whenever the participant should happen to pass out and/or expire. 3) All visible areas must be painted, and all paint must be applied with a regulation brush. Putting a blindfold on oneself in an attempt to bypass this rule will not work. 4) Boiling to correct warpage and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited and way not cool, man. 5) All pieces as included in the box set at retail must be painted. This means no pretending that you aesthetically prefer a 4 headed dragon and thus cut off one of the heads to avoid painting it. 6) Each participant must declare in their thread title that it is an attempt at completing a 7 day challenge so that the organizer can make note of the participant's valiant effort and the rest of the community can watch the fascinating downward spiral into insanity. 7) After declaration of completion, the participant will have 2 hours to submit their official entry photos in the Official Entries thread. Up to 5 pictures per entry may be submitted. Failure to submit photos within the given 2 hour period may result in a sudden onset of spontaneous human combustion. It is not appropriate to include pictures of oneself in the official entries thread, not only would that be strange, but everyone knows that cameras steal your soul. 8) Failure to complete the Goblin Challenge in the allotted time may result in the participant becoming a goblin themselves, although in rare cases, the participant may have the option of completing a labyrinth in 13 hours to avoid this penalty. The inclusion of a singing referee in too-tight pants in this additional penalty round is, unfortunately, no longer an option. The participant waves all responsibility of the challenge organizer should they fail and thus become a goblin, or should they lose their head or other various body parts, become trapped in an oubliette forever, or find themselves plagued by an eternal stench. I will be starting approximately 8 hours from now, or whenever I manage to get home from work. Oh and by the way, I haven't been able to get myself to paint very much for the past few months. Hell of a way to force oneself back into painting, isn't it?
  4. For those of you unfamiliar with Goblin Painting Challenges, started by our very own @buglips*the*goblin, here is a link to the Kaladrax thread that started it all: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/51269-kaladrax-in-seven-days-buglips-is-crazy-wip . For this Challenge, I will be painting up Ma'al Drakar in 7 days, using no brushes larger than a size 0. The rules are posted below: I will be starting my Challenge at 1:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time on August 2nd 2017 (link here). EDIT: If you want to skip all of the talky stuff, here's the link to my completion picture. EDIT: And here's the link to the final entry pictures. Let the insanity begin!!! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  5. Actually, I'm starting this tomorrow. I'm starting the thread now so that @buglips*the*goblin has a chance to check in and add my name to the list of bat-crap crazy whackjobs taking this on. And, you know. Pelt somebody with a stanky shoe, 'cause why not. As this is a Goblin Challenge, it will follow the Challenge Rules, as stated in this thread: I am .. not sure I know WTF I'm doing, but whatever, I'm a girlblin, I'm not known for sanity, and I pelt people with chili-bombs. So. Maal's been washed and dry-fitted, and I've said a lot of bad words about all the ratzenfraggin' holes in the wings and ... done exactly nothing about any of it, because I'm not breaking out the knife and greenstuff until tomorrow. But! The PLAN, if plan there can be said to be had, is that tomorrow, day one, will be mostly line-trimming, gap-filling and wing-patching, and possibly linering the base. After that, painting will proceed apace; and here's a picture of Maal'dryfitted to prove I have all the pieces, and amuse everybody. I couldn't find Sir Forscale, so I used a quarter. Let the commentating begin! ... don't get nuts, I'd like to be able to start this tomorrow and only be on page one or two. ;p
  6. While I have jumped the gun for the official contest, I am jumping into the insanity pool and attempting to paint Ma'al Drakar in 7 days per Buglips' rules. I'm adding a level of difficulty by painting it at my FLGS and I'm live streaming while I do it. Because of that time constraint, I'm actually already one day in.... Gotta paint when the store is open. ... You can follow along over at https://www.twitch.tv/diceaddiction If you missed the stream or want to watch the past streams, they are under the videos tab. We'll be posting these to Facebook as well. The schedule should be: Thursday July 20th 1pm - 11pm (maybe midnight) Friday July 21st 1pm - 10pm Saturday July 22nd 1-pm - 6pm May stream again from 9pm on... Sunday July 23rd 1pm - 10pm Monday July 24rd 1pm -10 pm Tuesday July 25th 7pm For wrap up only I've got to go back to work so there may be no video at all. If there are more times or the times change, I'll post here. 7. I assume you're all already familiar with the Goblin Challenges, especially since there are 2 other contenders taking on their own challenges right now! Time off from work for me always means it's paint slopping time... I don't know what I'm going to do when I run out of challenges to do. In case you've forgotten the roolz: 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 3) Boiling and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited. 4) The timer starts with the posting of a picture of DDS2 and my intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing my local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 7 days (168 consecutive hours) later or whenever I complete the task prior to time running out. This is going to hurt a lot and I'm not absolutely certain that I'm going to be able to finish in time since I am not in any way, shape or form a speed painter, despite my past challenge victories. I've got the full 7 days at my disposal though and a giant case of energy drinks so I'm going to give it my best and try very hard not to get caught up in spending a billion hours on the adventurers like I would normally do. I'll be starting somewhere around 12-ish hours from now... so I should probably go and unbox DDS2 now.
  8. Recently (Monday evening) I completed my first 7 day Goblin Challenge, following the guidelines put forth by our resident Goblin Buglips here. I'd booked a week off (Tuesday to Tuesday, for silly work reasons) and figured I'd try doing Khanjira before even considering the soonTM to come 5 Heads in 7 Days. So, with a fist full of Size 0 brushes in hand, I set off. Little did I know that fate would throw just about every delay causing event in the book at me, I managed to complete it with 28 minutes to spare (and was only half an hour late for D&D). You can read all about it over in the WIP. Khanjira is too big for my normal photo setup so I had to improvise.... He was actually pretty fun to paint, and I'll definitely consider doing another challenge at some point.
  9. It's time! (Well, not right now, but a little bit later it will be....you know). I'm starting a week of stay-cation tonight (our on-call schedule is Tuesday to Tuesday. is it a pain for vacations, yes, but it avoids all the Monday holiday switching stuff....) and as my only real plan was to not be at work I thought it was time I got in on the, umm, fun? that is the 7 day Goblin Challenge. My opponent for the week will be Khanjira, the supposed World Breaker (honestly, I dropped him and he barely even cracked the world, hardly a scratch). Here is a candid shot of him relaxing in the hot tub yesterday....doesn't look so tough to me.... Official start time will be sometime this evening, when we get back from the office Christmas tree lighting and fireworks. (That's right, I'm kicking off my 7 day challenge with fireworks!! )
  10. I have some time off of work with the impending holiday so as always, it's a perfect opportunity to chuck my marbles out the window and take on a paint slopping challenge! If you're not familiar with the Purple Cat Challenge, I highly recommend that you head over here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/71342-introducing-the-purple-cat-challenge-mashaaf-in-5-days-wip/page-1 where you can see OneBoot establishing the challenge and defeating Mashaaf herself! Who wouldn't want to take on a challenge set forth by a purple kitty? So here are the roolz: 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 5 is right out. Once the size 0, being the correct number, be reached, then lobbest thy size 0 brush towards thy foe, who being made of Bones, shall be painted. 2) 5 full days (120 consecutive hours) from when the timer starts are all the time that is allowed in this challenge; whether that time is spent working, sleeping, painting or sobbing uncontrollably is up to the participant. 3) Boiling and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited. 4) The timer starts with the posting of a picture of Mashaaf and my intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing my local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 5 days (120 consecutive hours) later or whenever I complete the task prior to time running out. You guys know how I roll. I'm not even slightly prepared for this (or am I? ) as my life is a slow crawl of constant disasters. My desk is as much of a wreck as my brain. I did, however, actually take Mashaaf out of her little baggie and dry-fit her though! But she needs some serious boiling if she's ever going to stand upright. And I'm still at work and will be for several hours. So my best guess is that I'll probably be officially starting on her tonight somewhere around 7 or 8pm CST!
  11. That's right, an unknown with maybe 3 painted minis to his name is going to attempt the blasphemy of following in the footsteps of buglips*the*goblin and OneBoot! As a refresher, here's a link to the original challenge: http://forum.reaperm...ps-is-crazy-wip I will be following the same rules buglips followed in his challenge (plus some Christmas bagpipes the whole way because how is that not distracting?): 1) Only using a standard Size 0 brush since that was all he had. 2) I will work on Kaladrax for 168 consecutive hours (7 days) 3) The only prep time I've done is to wash and boil Kally 4) This post's timestamp marks my beginning and the time I should hit next week for my ending All paints will be from the Reaper Kickstarter collections as that's all I have! Hopefully I won't crash and burn or disappoint! Should be entertaining for you though watching me squirm and realize that badness I've signed up for. Should have finished putting sealer on my shoji screens instead this week... Here goes a week nothing!
  12. Welcome, welcome, one and all, to the very first Purple Cat Challenge! Most of you are probably familiar by now with the 7 day Goblin Challenge; the one where you can only use brushes Size 0 or smaller, and being kinda crazy is a common prerequisite. If you haven't heard of this madness before, here's the official rules, and here's where the insanity all began. Now, after completing two of them, I've become rather fond of these challenges, and how they've stretched me to my limits and beyond as a painter. Something I've definitely noticed, though, is that while the Goblin Challenges are Legendary Feats (not exaggerating), they may never be feasible for responsible folks with jobs and families and what-not. So, this fact, plus buglips' attempt to paint Cthulhu in 2 days, plus my realization that there are other cool BIG minis that need painting, all crashed into each other and resulted in...a mess. But! What came out of that mess was the idea of the Purple Cat Challenge. This will consist of smaller BIG minis that will still be challenging to complete in 5 days, but are both more affordable and hopefully more approachable to those not able to devote a solid week to tiny brushes and sanity loss. Mashaaf will be the first, and I can confirm that Cthulhu will be the second. I have a good idea of the other models I'd like to include, but would like to paint them up first to determine whether they are good candidates or not. I don't have as much painting experience as buglips, so my initial assessment of whether a model would be a good challenge may be off, and I'd hate for someone to try one only to have it be ridiculously easy or impossibly difficult. :) SO! Without further ado, here are Da Roolz*: 1. You may use no brushes larger than Size 0. As Size 0 can vary by company and brand, the average bristle dimensions are 10mm long by 1mm wide. When selecting brushes, try to be as close to this guideline as possible. 2. You have 5 full days to complete from your posted start time (including a picture with a time stamp from a phone or computer screen is helpful to establish this) to complete the model. 3. All visible areas must be painted, and all paint must be applied with a regulation brush. 4. No drilling, filing, mold line removal or other prepwork is permitted before start time. The only preparation allowed is to dry fit your pieces to make sure the model is complete, and do any boiling and reshaping necessary to correct warpage and return the model to "factory spec". You may also clean the pieces with soap and water. 5. All pieces as included in the box set at retail must be painted. This would include, for example, the 5 adventurer figures included with Dragons Don't Share 2. 6. You must declare in your thread title that you are doing a 5-day challenge (ex: Mashaaf in 5 Days; Cthulhu in 5 Days). This way your thread gets noticed as a challenge so I can watch the fun and make arrangements for the prize** if you succeed. 7. Eligible models for the challenge are: Mashaaf, Cthulhu. More will be added as eligibility is determined. *Essentially, the Purple Cat Challenge roolz are exactly the same as the Goblin Challenge roolz, save for the models that are allowed (currently only Mashaaf and Cthulhu), and that the participant will have FIVE days instead of seven. **NOTE: Any (non-monetary, unaffiliated with Reaper) completion prizes will be contingent on availability and finances. I will at the very least mail you a pretty certificate. Let's get this party started! EDIT: If you'd like to skip to the end, here is the completion picture: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/71342-introducing-the-purple-cat-challenge-mashaaf-in-5-days-wip/?p=1458351 Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  13. If you or someone you know might be crazy, please check out the Official Goblin Challenge thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69639-7-day-goblin-challenge-official-rules It's doctor recommended and tastes great! Four day weekend means it's paint slopping time! In case you've forgotten the roolz and are too lazy to go to the link above, I'll repeat my version of them because I know clicking things is hard. 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 3) Boiling and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited. 4) The timer starts with the posting of a picture of Khanjira and my intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing my local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 7 days (168 consecutive hours) later or whenever I complete the task prior to time running out. Well, because I'm so awesome at life, I have done zero of the allowed prep work. My desk is a mess, with most of my paint bottles spread out all over it instead of in their racks, I've not even completely taken Khanjira out of the packaging, much less dry-fit or scrubbed or boiled him. Oh and I'm at work right now and will be for the next 8 or so hours. This is just one of those times where you know you've got nothin' to lose, but, you know, yolo. So if I've done none of that, then what have I done to prepare myself, you ask? Well, I have thought a lot about the paint scheme. Here are some inspiration pictures: Welcome to the show.
  14. Laaaaaadies and Geeeeeeeeeentlemen!!! Welcome to the Epic 7-day Challenge Khanjira battle: OneBoot vs. Buglips! OneBoot issued the Challenge! Buglips accepted! They will be following the standard rules! (Rules reposted here for clarity) 1. You may use no brushes larger than Size 0. As Size 0 can vary by company and brand, the average bristle dimensions are 10mm long by 1mm wide. When selecting brushes, try to be as close to this guideline as possible. 2. You have 7 full days to complete from your posted start time (including a picture with a time stamp from a phone or computer screen is helpful to establish this) to complete the model. This includes, for example, the 5 adventurer figures included with Dragons Don't Share 2. The official start time for this competition is 4:00 PM Pacific time on Wednesday the 27th Alrighty, let's get ready to RUUUUUUUUMBLLLLLLLE!! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  15. Okay! I now have the paints I will require, as well as the superglue and the brushes!! On Tuesday morning I will be starting my own Kaladrax Reborn challenge! The rules I shall be following are the standard. 1: No brushes will be used that are larger than a standard size 0. Also no airbrushing or finger painting is permitted!! 2: I will have seven days from my posted start time to finish the work. This will be established with a photo showing date and time on my computer screen. 3: All parts of the miniature will be fully painted. Again, all paint will be applied using a brush no larger than a size 0. 4: No prep work will be done to the miniature before the start time beyond washing, dry-fitting, and possibly boiling to correct warpage. 5: All items that come in the retail box must be painted. In this case it is all of Kaladrax and his base. I think that is the full rules for a Kaladrax challenge! My starting pic will also have images of the brushes I will use. Oh, one last thing.. My Kaladrax will NOT be painted as a Dracolich/Ravener.. I plan on making him a Wyrmwraith, as I have not seen anyone do him as one yet. :) Ok, pre-game chatter will be more than welcome!!
  16. If you're not familiar by now with the Goblin Challenge, then please go to Buglips' original thread where he first slayed Kaladrax: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/51269-kaladrax-in-seven-days-buglips-is-crazy-wip Then you're definitely going to want to see where OneBoot rose to the occasion and slayed the beast as well: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/68762-oneboot-is-crazy-too-kaladrax-in-7-days-wip/page-1 Well, as First Lady-thing and Buglips' other different favourite, I feel that it's my duty to take up the challenge as well - besides, I need to know for sure whether taking on Ma'aldrakar is actually feasible for me to try or not since I won't be able to take off a full week from work on short notice to tackle him right after the holidays. So the only way for me to do a goblin challenge is while working for at least part of it - I'm at work as I type this and have been since early this morning. I'll also be working about 10 hour days tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. Fortunately, I have one shot, or one opportunity here with the 4th of July weekend giving me an already planned 4 day weekend where I was going to be painting anyway. The Roolz: 1) Thou shalt not use any brush larger than a standard size 0. 0 shall be the number on the brush, and the number on the brush shall be 0. 1 shalt thou not use, neither use thou 2, excepting that thou ensures that it is actually 0/2 on the brush. 3) Boiling and scrubbing the model to remove casting residue are the only prep tasks allowed prior to the timer being started. Removing mold lines, greenstuffing or otherwise altering the original sculpt in any way beyond factory spec is prohibited. 4) The timer starts with the posting of a picture of Kaladrax and my intended brush(es) to be used and a device bearing my local time. The challenge will therefore end at the same time 7 days (168 consecutive hours) later. I spent yesterday putting together my new paint racks, organizing and cleaning my desk so I have a fresh start to my working space and then doing a dry fit to make sure I had all of Kaladrax's parts, boiling the parts that bothered me (probably poorly) and giving him a good scrub down. Mmm, just like mom's spaghetti. I will begin this evening as soon as I'm home from work and ready to go - probably around 7pm CST. Note: I may or may not log onto the google hangout while working on Kaladrax. As fond of you people as I am, I may not be in a talking mood or may need to zone out listening to music instead of trying to pay attention to and/or participate in a conversation. Don't be too disappointed, I'll be doing audio only anyway. If you see me on the hangout and I don't respond, or I randomly mute myself or drop out entirely without warning, (so, you know, just like any other night...) please don't take offense. It's my understanding that this challenge is going to be particularly mentally grueling and frustrating at times, so I don't want to take that out on anyone else.
  17. Right. So, while I am not officially part of the challenge issued by OneBoot to Buglips (silly kitty, goblins win at everything *cough*), joining the party seemed like a good idea at the time. Now I'm committed. So! Prepare yourself, Kaiju! You will be painted! Bwehahahahaa! As I am doing this Challenge style, I am sticking to certain Roolz: No brushes large than size 0! These are some tiny brushes. In order to maintain compliance, I have cleared all larger brushes, sponges, q-tips and other items from reach. The kaiju shall be painted in seven days! I will be starting this party at 4PM PST, and finishing it ... um. before today in a week. Or I will go crazy. We'll see. Post painting, I have only washed the kaiju. All other prep is forbidden until I actually begin the challenge! I must paint all the things, and all the things must be painted! Fortunately, Khanjira only includes himself, there are no extra bits or heroes to paint. Being crazy isn't a requirement, although it is likely to be a result. Fortunately, I am already something less than sane so it's likely no one will notice a difference. I plan to paint an epic kaiju Tarresque, so there will be lots of purple paint. Whee!
  18. I painted Kaladrax in 7 days using only Size 0 brushes, and found to my great astonishment that I actually enjoyed it a lot, despite how gruelingly difficult it was. So, I've decided to do it all over again, this time with Khanjira! BUT...I thought I'd shake things up a bit. Y'see, I realized that buglips, the one who started this whole thing, has yet to paint up HIS Khanjira. Given that Khanjira is part of his Challenge and all, I rather think it's time that happened. So, with that said.... Buglips! *dramatic pointing pose* I'm officially challenging you to a 7-day Goblin Challenge Khanjira paint-off!!! *pulls off a dainty little kitty gauntlet and throws to the ground in front of her with a tiny (piff)* Er...that was a lot more impressive in my head. So, what do you say? Care to cross brushes in an epic duel to determine the fate of the universe? Or are yeh...bloo? EDIT: The Challenge has been accepted! It has been decided that 4:00 PM Pacific time on Wednesday the 27th will be the official start time. ******************* HERE IS THE LINK TO THE OFFICIAL WIP THREAD: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/70023-were-both-crazy-oneboot-and-buglips-paint-khanjira-in-7-days-wip-thread/?p=1409582 ******************* Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  19. For those of you unfamiliar with The Great Kaladrax Painting Challenge, initiated by buglips*the*goblin, here's a link to his thread: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/51269-kaladrax-in-seven-days-buglips-is-crazy-wip Feel free to boggle at the insanity of it for a bit, I'll wait. ... ... ... All done? Okay, so, being not entirely sane myself, I've decided to give it a go. I will be following the same rules buglips followed in his challenge, namely: 1) No using a brush larger than a standard Size 0 (no getting around it by using, say, a size 0 brush meant for house painting, for example) 2) I will work on Kaladrax for no more than 168 consecutive hours (7 full days) 3) The only prep time allowed before the timer starts is boiling and cleaning to remove casting residue. Removing (or not) mold lines is part of the challenge! 4) When I begin, I will post a picture of Kaladrax with my phone displaying the date and time (I don't get the newspaper) ...That's it, really. Pretty simple. I will endeavor to make semi-regular updates, but when I get deep into PaintingLand, I can lose track of time. I will, however, be very good about taking awful WIP pictures as I go, then at least doing a batch picture post each day. I've timed this so Mr. Boot is gone at a work conference about half of the 7 days, so I will have a little more free time than usual. So! Feel free to come along for the ride. I can't promise to be on here super often (or maybe I will be, who knows), but I can promise that the trip will at least be entertaining. If you'd rather just skip to the end, here's my official completion post with pictures: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/68762-oneboot-is-crazy-too-kaladrax-in-7-days-wip/&do=findComment&comment=1371410 Final show-off pictures: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69015-kaladrax-reborn-in-7-days-by-oneboot/ Note: Unless otherwise specified, all of the paints used are Reaper brand paints.
