  1. Got another one of these Warhammer proxy models done. This was another Etsy find. Fun one to paint.
  2. The unrelenting, swarming, terrifying tide that is known as the Skaven... Also known as "skrit skrit of death-death to all, but maybe save a few bakers as they make delicious cookies and cupcakes!" I'm playfully blaming a wolf for this thread, but it's a different one for a change. This time it was @Chaoswolf! This is going to be a looooong project. Arguably it already is, since most of the initial contents of this army were purchased over a decade ago, but I have a tentative goal in mind of "fully finished by 2020" which gives me a year and eight months to work on it in between all my other projects - a goal I hope I can manage. It was originally supposed to be assembled six weeks after I purchased the 25th anniversary army box, and then there'd be a campaign, prizes and whatnot, but being stupidly busy with work kind of prevented that from happening back in the day and I wound up backing out of that event/tournament. Later on, Isle of Blood was added in. Either way, I've always wanted to have a big, GINORMOUS HORDE OF DOOM, and the Skaven definitely portray such in my eyes Always did like their lore, and more importantly, the models, the fluff, and the fact they're murderous, backstabbing buggers! Eshin has always been my favourite, but Skryre is definitely a close second due to their shiny shiny blasty murder-kill anything in their path. Why the focus on Pestilens though? Well, truth be told, any good kill-kill stab-stab from the Skaven is going to be comprised of the various different factions, but the biggest part is that their models are some of the most eye catching to me. That and I already had a bunch of them, so I figured why not! Their siege weapons are also rather lovely, at least the Plague Furnace. I'm still debating about the Plagueclaw, but for now I still plan on having two in there for symmetry and versatility At the moment, I only have about half (or so) the units I'd like to have, but I'll work on acquiring the rest over time. What do I have right now? (Spoilers added to be friendlier to mobile users) (So.... Assuming I counted correctly, we're talking 201 238 minis) And what's being added in? (So.... about another 243 small models, 2 small siege units, and 11 siege weapons/behemoth added in bringing that to a grand total of 444 481 small units, 2 smaller siege units, and 11 large siege weapons. It's 454 491 small models total if you factor in the Mordheim models I probably have kicking around somewhere o_O) Just for my own calculations, I'm writing down in a spoiler what I think will wind up being the entirety of the army... ...I kind of figured that if I'm going to go in, I'm going to go ALL IN. Sure, it's technically an army that's illegal to field due to too many leaders (18/8 if you include the on foot Grey Seer, 17 if you don't), and too many behemoths (7/5) with the new AoS rules, but it will give me that nice variety I crave, and flexibility to play in pretty much any size game. It will also look downright insane on a shelf once it's done I suspect. Technically, it's also a 8,940 point army as currently written, but that's just using info from the Warscroll builder, and not making use of any Battalions, which could theoretically change the composition of this army, and have me add (or possibly subtract) models. Come to think of it, odds are I'll wind up taking a good look through the 9th age's website to get ideas for various other miniatures, because while this is technically an army I might field, I just want a nice, varied horde, and nothing says varied quite like adding in minis from several other companies ...Doubly so when some of their miniatures are a lot nicer looking (like say, the Jezzails, or even rat swarms). For example, Otherworld, Reaper, and Windmaster all have models that can easily fit in ~_^ Now... No good thread is without pictures, so here's a part of the reason why the next several orders from Reaper are going to have a decent amount of bases in them... ^That there is what I've been able to round up so far that isn't still in a sealed box. At least most are assembled, but there's that one annoying thing... They're all on 20mm square bases, and Age of Sigmar tends to prefer them being on round bases (most being 25mm, but some being other sizes)... Not to mention the fact i tend to prefer circular bases anyways. Thankfully, I used superglue for almost all of them, so that will help IMMENSELY. I'll also be doing up bases for each and every one of them, which is probably going to chew through a decent amount of my various supplies, given that the last time I did up some bases (earlier this week) I chewed through half of the 200g of Magic Sculpt I have (although to be fair, there were 2x 60mm and 16x 25mm bases for my Tau, even if it was just the broken concrete stamp it still uses up a good amount of putty). I also greatly prefer the nice lip that Reaper's bases have, because it lets me try and have the added in designs be relatively flush with the "expected" height, unless I otherwise plan on having them be higher (like say, for heroes and/or leaders) ^ So here we have the bases for what was originally going to be my Censer Bearers, but it turns out those are supposed to be on 32mm bases, so instead these will be for my Poison Wind Globadiers, which rather works out because those haven't been based yet ...Happy fox to say the least. ^The top most 40mm base is for my Warlord (which will feature a decent more rubble on top of those cobblestones), while the other two are for two of my Rat Ogres. The 18x 25mm splintered deck bases are for my Night Runners. When I make the other 22x bases, I'll make sure to have more raw material so the details don't get squished when stamping. Most of them turned out alright, but some of them you could tell I didn't have enough and/or really should have had the stamp against something solid instead of my fingertips. Up first will be the poison wind globadiers.... Once I clear up a bit of room on my cutting mat anyways, I kind of have a bunch of gnolls, kitsunes, and minotaurs taking up that space right now ^_^;;;;;;
  3. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/resinwarfare/resinwarfare-the-ravenous-hordes-ratmen-exclusive-models A huge number of modular Skaven/Ratkin models for 3d printing. The EB gets you 200 files for 30€.
  4. I have been away and had alot to do at work ever since, so no painting has gotten done for some time now. I did however manage to make some time today, and have painted up the Rat Ogre from the Bones 4 Core set. Oh, sorry "Giant Wererat". Massive, overstated, muscle bound torso and comparatively short legs, giant apelike arms...This is definately a Skaven Rat Ogre. Just another simple paint job to get something done. I put him on a 50mm base. #12, Giant Wererat Bones 4 Core set, 2019 Reaper Miniatures unknown sculptor Made in Bonesium PVC 50mm base should be available from reapermini.com some time in the future in Bones.
  5. "So, ye're wondering why as I, a humble rat-catcher, should need such a great monster-jaw of a trap? 'S a fair question. There's some as would say old Boren's CRAZED in the head, a madman! But I ain't." "Look you, it goes back to an experience I had years ago, when I was younger and the Moggett here no more than a kitten. The city had hired me to lay traps in the sewers for there were reports of rats in great numbers. Thinking it easy pay, I went down the narrow ladder into the main duct, All went well for some hours, until I spotted a breach in the masonry, where some bricks had fell in. And what should I see there but a great fat rat, big as the Mogget is now and bold as brass!" "I set out some poisoned bait for the cheeky beggar, but it up and scampered back into a passage behind the breach in the wall. And soon enough, out spilled a very tide of rats, all of great size and speed! You may guess the Moggett and I kept busy!" "But after we'd dispatched them or sent the squeakers scurrying away, I saw summat else. Didn't believe it myself at first--a rat, carrying a torch and standing on its hind legs like a man! Even wearing some kind of clothes like a God-fearin' civilized creature!" "It looked around, sniffed the air a bit, and made some squittering noises and trotted off back where it hade come from, and me and the Moggett just stood there in shock. We couldn't have seen that, sure! But we had. And I reckon it must have been a scout of some sort, for soon out came three more of the beggars, walking like men and tall as I, carrying weapons and wearing armor! Lucky thing I hid in an alcove, for they started poking around and soon came across the dead rats we'd put paid to already. They weren't too happy about that, if I'm any judge of rats, and I am." "After a bit they turned and went back too, and the Moggett and I got to thinking as maybe we should leg it back to the sewer entrance. And sure enough, before long there came a splashing and a clanking and a slapping-scratching sound as of wet feet with claws to 'em. And I started seeing some shadows cast om a flickering light as I sure weren't holding." "Well, gentlemen, we up and ran for it, and I ain't ashamed to admit it! Ye'd have done the same, and done well to keep your britches unfilled if ye'd seen the tide of armed and armored vermin boiling out of that passage, all yellowed fangs and savage claws and knives all over rust but sharp just the same. I can't pretend to speak Rat-speech, but I'd swear they were shrieking and howling for meat." "Only took one look back on the way, gentlemen, with their squalling and squealing behind me and the Mogget, fur all on end and tail like a bottle-brush, galloping before me and yowling to wake the dead, but I saw 'em, dozens and maybe hundreds. Saw what must have been their leader, too, a great brute, big as a big man and wearing a helmet what was all knives. Think there was one or two in robes like what a wizard would wear, but can't swear to that with all the confusion and the light flickering every which way. Be that as it may, we sprinted up the ladder, slammed the manhole cover down and rolled a cart atop it, and then got blue-blind paralytic drunk on enough brandy to piss a new sewer. Well, I did, not the Moggett. But it weren't enough brandy to forget, then or ever, and ever since I bring man-traps and bear-traps down with me if I have to go underground. And that's my story, gentlemen, and ye'd be wise to mark it." Boren Backslap is an amazing character, with a cloak of rat pelts, a mangy cat bigger than some dogs, and a trap/varmint hutch. He looks like he's settled in the New World and would also work well in a Weird West setting. GW makes incredibly elaborate sculpts, and they know ratfolk like few else. The dynamically-posed fellas on the masonry bases are from a Shadespire pack, Spiteclaw's Swarm. They acknowledge no law but the law of the claw. Probably could have punched them up a bit more with weathering and such, but was on a self-imposed deadline. Word to the wise: the lesser ratties can be painted easily enough once assembled, but Spiteclaw himself should probably get the inside of his cape and his backside painted before assembly. Learn from my mistakes! The little ratling with the torch is from a Pathfinder grab bag. Tail broke off, so I replaced it with a pin, as I've done before ( https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/87661-ratsy-and-the-varmint-boys-crooked-dice-plus-50320-50209b-03577 ). The rubble and additional rats are from a Terraincrate mine pack; the rat swarms are Nolzur's. Lastly, the rat-wizards and surly/unmotivated rat soldiers are from Black Tree; part of their Ver'Men line. I love me some rat-men, and the ears and the bent noses were irresistible, even if the sculpts lack the finesse of the Skaven around the feet.
  6. They say every army needs it's centerpiece, it's keystone... It's.... Leader. Many have glorious names, that warriors will flock to battle under, to defend some sort of principle, moral code, or... Other stuff. Not this one. Nope, not him, a warlord who doesn't even bother with a name. Some say his name was lost to the ages, others say that anyone who dares utter his name winds up meeting an untimely fate. All that is known, is that the murderous mutant rats under his command are some of the most bloodthirsty out there, and they all speak with a hushed reverence for some critter that's simply known as "Steve", most without realizing Steve is the impaled skull on the warlord's shoulder... Two things are well known though... He, and his forces are typically only known by their actions, namely that any town or outpost that they attack, there are no survivors left behind, and an absolutely bloody amount of carnage is left in his wake.. ^Originally tried to just use the box art behind him, and keep things relatively tidy, but I was having trouble with my mobile phone's camera hunting for focus, and so after a few attempts I wound up switching to a plain white sheet of paper. Putting these two up though because a)I like them, and b)the colours turned out fairly close to how the mini is in the real world, at least to my eyes. This is the first character mini for my "Unrelenting Tide" Skaven army... Comprised of a combination of the 25th Anniversary Warhammer Fantasy Battles Skaven boxed army set and the Island of Blood miniatures, this is the first miniature I've tried to go further than just tabletop with, and saw what I'll describe as mixed results. While I did want to try certain techniques such as OSL, I decided as I was going on to simply work on basics such as lining. Now yes, I could have gone a few more layers on the flames, and especially his lower half, I wound up calling him "done" due to a few things, but mostly because I'd repainted certain parts three or four times and it was getting to the point where I just wanted him finished. Oddly enough, thanks to some things on him and other minis I'm still working on, I was able to come up with a colour scheme that seemed to just... "click" and work for him.
  7. Finished four more guys from my Skaven team, yaaayy! I actually started them a couple months ago, but school was demanding at the time and they kept getting pushed back. Yes, they are the dreaded "table-top quality", but table-top is all I do: Mandatory booty-shot: While we're at it, here's the entire finished team, to date. The two guys in the rear left of the group were painted in 1990, and I don't really have the heart to strip and repaint them to match the rest of the team, even though they're noticeably brighter than the rest: One of these days I'll actually use a camera better than the one on my phone, but today is not that day. ;) Probably time to revamp my photo setup too.
  8. These are Wererats, not Skaven at all: Being Bones, they are slightly soft in the details, especially the smaller ones. They are made of the slightly more rigid Bones material that most of the second kickstarter Bones were done in, and as such the thinner bits like blades and tails are still flexible, but not rubbery or so bendy as to droop under their own weight as has been known to happen to some Bones in extreme poses or with only the legs supporting heavy bodies, similar to the poses of these minis. However, these are all rigid enough not to have any such problems. So that is a win in my book. 77292: Giant Wererat: Erring on the side of caution with the backside picture, due to the ...huevos on display https://maledrakh.files.wordpress.com/2017/09/170927-reaper-bones-77292-giant-wererat-d.jpg The Rat Ogre (still can’t bring myself to call it a “Rat Ogor”) certainly has got a pair. 40mm base 77293: Wererat Berserker 30mm base 77294: Wererat Stalker 30mm base 77295: Wererat Assassin 30mm base These are all sculpted by Jason Wiebe according to the reaper store.
  9. Here are my new were-rats! I wanted to have more than melee so I did a lazy conversion by grabbing some GW zombie bits with spears. I stuck a wooden bead over the spear part and filled it with supper glue. A little paint and viola not to shabby (for the table anyway). I cleaned up the bases a bit after picture time as well . I am working on a scenario with a cult of were-rats worshiping ZBP Abominarat. Should be fun .
  10. Finally finished "Bob" my second Hellpit abomination, which is a large Skaven designed monster for Warhammer fantasy. He's pretty grotesque with a face(s) only a mother could love so of course I think he's adorable. One of those it's so ugly it's cute things. My first Hellpit, Pretty Boy, was lonely so I decided he needed a friend. Had a lot of fun with the skin tones on him, I think I'm getting better overall. I played around with a lot of different tones to try to give him a patchwork appearance - since this thing is essentially a golem, frankenstein type thing. Anyway so I took a ton of pics, some are a little blurry unfortunately. I've lost an integral part of my camera's tripod, that helps it connect so I was holding the camera and it shows.
  11. Last week I became the proud new owner of a second hand Skaven (GW ratmen) army. Most of the rank-n-file troops are plastic. Due to being insane and not having enough ongoing projects, I have decided to fix up and make a multi-base/diorama (for possible use in Kings of War) a whole bunch of them. I'll be making a 'horde' of ratmen on a sewer base. Officially, a horde is 40 figures, 10 across by 4 deep, in ranks. I'm going to be using less than that; the final count isn't determined yet, but I have a hard time thinking of a horde of rats in perfect military formation, so my base will be the appropriate size, but the figures will be scattered around chaotically, as befitting a horde of vermin. I will be using a few Reaper figures here and there to help 'fill up space', mostly rat swarms and some giant rats. As far as the base goes, I'm thinking it'll be (mostly) flat, with part of it being lower and filled with sewage. For the lower part, should it run the length of the base, or cut across the width? Any suggestions? This is what I'm working with as far the figures go: Broken/missing parts, mold lines all over the place, and a fairly slapdash paint job. I will be making repairs (this has actually already begun). cleaning up mold lines, and touching up the existing paint. I like the scheme, so I'm going to stay with it, and just fix it up. This will be a slow-burn project; I have no desire to try and paint 20-30 ratmen all at once. This will get worked on here and there between other things that I'm doing.
  12. 'Damn it all' said Rolf as trudged through the rancid sewer tunnel. Their patrol was almost over, and here he was investigating some noise that the sergeant had heard. He shouldn't have made that crack about the man's sister. He could still barely hear the others back at the junction talking while they waited for him. 'Damn it all' he said again softly. 'There's nothing here', he thought to himself, 'I'm going back.' Wait....what was that? An enormous hole gaped in the side of the sewer passage. He raised his lantern to get a better loo and found himself staring face to face with a rat. Except that this rat stood on legs, like a man. Suddenly, he felt a scabrous hand press over his mouth from behind as the things sword slid into his guts. ================================================================================================================= This is a figure that I got in a box with a bunch of other figures; it was severely damaged; someone had attacked it with clippers and half severed it's tail, face, and broken off the right arm. I initially used it practice working with green stuff, once it was repaired, I figured I'd throw some paint at it. This is what I managed to do in a little over 2 hours this afternoon.
  13. Hello, One more mini from the ReaperCon 2015 painting contest, this Games Workshop Skaven Rat-Ogre from the Isle of Blood set. Again, any feedback is appreciated. I made the base out of Electro-Static Discharge bench mat remnants (the bright blue ones), and I experimented with a red glaze (of a forgotten red paint (I'm still travelling) and Liquitex Matte Medium). Thanks in advance! .trey
  14. Large pictures and a couple more angles on Tumblr here.
  15. I think I have not ever done a WiP thread (on this board), or if I have I don't remember it. This batch of figures are what got worked on for the February Leg of the Resolutionary Paint Challenge but didn't get finished -or- they were just hanging around partly painted of the painting desk. In short: candidates to finish for March. The little witch with the green hands is part of a four piece pack. She is missing the top of her staff (maybe it went in the cauldron). Juliette is not really 3547, she is really the bones version, but there is no 77xxx number for her that I can find. The human archers started off primed white then two of them got an experimental blue mixed from one of the dark blues and Sky Blue. I also experimented with my new yellow paints on two of them, More about the Sky Blue next post.
  16. So it appears that there will be a video game based upon Mordheim. http://www.bluesnews.com/s/150208/mordheim-city-of-the-damned-announced I have fond memories of playing the game and hope that the electronic version doesn't suck. From the write-up it seems to mirror the original miniature game and they say that there will be a single player campaign as well as multi-player support. I am hoping for the best and expecting the worst.
  17. And here we have six skaven that I got out of a goodie bag at war store weekend a year or two ago. There are six of them because like all my other painting goals for October I misscounted how many minis there were.
  18. Working on a new dungeon crawler of my own, and I needed some grunt enemies. Grabbed some really old Skaven and repainted them, turned out really fun. I'm way better than I was when I last fielded my ratmen. Also had this Elf hero (is he wood elf? I dunno, maybe, don't follow too much GW stuff) sitting around from not too long ago when I decided I'd try a few Resin models. Skaven repaints: Elf: A little more intense with the lights here, I was going to just delete the pic, but I like the effect:
  19. This is an unaligned 'Skaven Marine' Daemon Prince I did for a friend of mine several years ago. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, I don't have the figure to take better quality. Mashup of the Vermin Lord with the Chaos Marine Prince. The back pack spikey balls are from Plague monks. The pet rat is a Barrow Rat (02544) from Reaper. I really love this model, probably more than my Death Guard Vermin Lord conversion that I kept.
  20. This is the first of my 40k Chaos Marine Daemon Prince conversions from a few years back, a Daemon Prince/Skaven Vermin Lord mashup for Nurgle. I'm still very pleased with the conversion and paint on this figure and probably wouldn't change anything if I did it now.
  21. Whilst I procrastiante over current painting, here's something I prepared earlier... About 2 years earlier but I've only just got around to photographing it. The Screaming Bell is probably my favourite warmachine from Warhammer. Pushed across the battlefield by a unit of Skaven, it's ringing driving all the Skaven around it into a frenzy building energy that can burn those in front of it, split the earth, collapse buildings, or ultimately break reality, destroying itself and hurting everything within 4D6 inches, which if you roll high is one hell of a way to go out. If damaged by something big it can even ring out in the opponents turn and get an additional move or allowing all Skaven units within 24" to re-roll leadership tests, and when you've got an army of cowards cunning survivalists, that's a real boon.
