  1. So I'm going to be making a diorama for a friend soon. I have a pretty solid idea of what I want to do but no idea how to go about it. I've never worked with cork before and am going to be using quite a bit of it. I want to pour water effects(?) into it but don't want the cork to soak it up. My questions are (photos to be added below for reference): How do I seal the cork so it won't absorb the resin water effects? Do I need to seal the wood I am basing it on as well? If so what is the best way to do that? What is the best glue to put the cork on the wood,
  2. I finally got photos uploaded to the blog. Here's the link to them so I don't have a super picture heavy post. ETA: Most of the minis are from the Bones 3 KS. Minivember 2017 Here's a sneak peek:
  3. Okay, I promise I'll finish one of these threads one day. But in the meantime I've started painting the Bones Sphinx. I've already painted up the wings, I've just got a few little things to do. I do want to thank @Pochi for the inspiration for the wings. Photos:
  4. This idea is stolen (with permission) from @OneBoot. Last year she took a Bones Hydra and put wings on it to paint as a mock up for her own Ma'al Drakkar. It was most fun to watch. Husband loved the idea so much that he had to have one with traditional Tiamat colors to match our Ma'al when I get to painting him. Here is her original WIP: This is my first conversion and will be my first dip into the world of sculpting green stuff. Which I'll need to do to make it look like there are scales around the wings instead of just, well, blobs of green stuff. Okay, that's enough of an intro
  5. I'm going to be starting a blog series call Tools of the Trade. It's mostly going to go in depth into the tools used but will probably include a few tutorials. If you were reading something like this what kind of topics might you want to see? I'm taking all suggestions currently. This will mainly be aimed at novice painters but could be of good use to others as well, I think
  6. After a poll this seems to be the best place to put this thread. For the most part I'll stick photos under spoilers because my phone likes to make them large. So I bought a sketchbook today with the intent to catalog and show off all of my paints. I thought it was quite the appropriate book to get. First I made a grid on a page. Then added the title to each column: Name & SKU, None, Base, Wash, Brown Liner, Blue Liner. That's as far as I've gotten. Next I plan on starting to fill out paint names and SKU's. Then I will prime the squares with so
  7. So in the last...year? We have received the second wave of our Shadows of Brimstone Kickstarter pledge. We went all in and opted to get everything. I haven't started painting anything from it. I've primed most of it but just haven't had the drive to do it until now. This is the pile of sprues fresh out of the box. Then the cleaning process. I'm not even sure all of them fit into those pictures, I know the second picture is definitely not all of them, that was just the first wave that got cleaned. There's something like...137? minis there if I co
  8. Husband has asked me to paint up Isabeau Laroche as Captain Marvel. He saw some pictures of it done on Tumblr a while ago and thought it was the neatest thing. So I am going to attempt to recreate it. When I was initially asked I didn't think I was nearly good enough to pull it off but I think where I am now I can do it. I'll be using this photo as reference: The emblem on her chest will go onto Isabeau's shield as seen in original mini photos.
  9. I started painting up Cthulhu tonight. So far I've just got the base coat on the head and body. I hope to get this done fairly quickly.
  10. Painted this up a couple of days ago, took maybe 3 hours. This is the only decent photo I got but overall I'm very happy with how it came out.
  11. I finished! Unfortunately he doesn't fit in my light box quite right so I had to just use my blanket as a back drop. The lighting could be better also. Overall I'm really happy with him. Spoiled for big pictures.
  12. I started painting Dagon a few days ago. He's very much still in the beginning stages. All my paints are MSP unless otherwise specified. Here's what I've done so far: Washed and blue liner-ed and started a base coat of Marine Teal. Then a little more work on the fins with Twilight Purple, Gem Purple, and Amethyst Purple but they have a long way to go still.
  13. I finished her. It's finished but not perfect. I could have messed around with things even further and cleaned her up a bit more. I really probably could have left her sitting for weeks trying to figure out what else to do which is when I decided it's done. Pretty happy with the eyes on this one. Also, the chaps were the first time I'd attempted to do distressed leather which I think look pretty good for a first attempt. Probably could have gotten clearer pictures but didn't want to fight with the phone any longer. ETA: C&C welcome.
  14. So as some of you may know I'm making a diorama! This will be slow going for a while as I get the materials and then it should be full steam ahead. I've started by procuring another copy of the "telephone box" since I don't really like the first one I did a few years ago. It's not awful but not up to my standard for a Christmas present.
  15. It's almost that time of year again! And by that I mean it's almost November. I started this last year in place of doing NaNoWriMo. Instead of writing a novel I paint a mini a day. I have tweaked the rules slightly from last year since I wasn't able to complete it the way I wanted to because life. So here are the revised rules and my calendar. I'm going to try to do this one mini each day but if that fails as long as I have 30 minis at the end of the month I'll consider it a success. Rules: Must paint at least 30 minis (1 for each day) 1 sculpt = 1 mini Prep befor
  16. I'm painting all the giants that came with Bones 3 starting with the 4 frost giants. I'm going to start off by assembly lining the skin and then go back to the queen, who I already have liner-ed, and go from there. Pics under spoiler for size.
  17. I'm super in love with this mini. It was so much fun to work on. And I'm VERY happy with how the eyes turned out because that's something I struggle with a lot. The lighting here is not great, I have misplaced the power cord to my light box, and somethings are off color from what it should be.
  18. I painted this a while ago but am just now getting around to taking/posting photos. He was too big to fit in my light box so I had to deal with the less than optimal lighting in the apartment. I'm really happy with how he came out now that he's done. I had about a week where I wanted to throw him in a bath of simple green and start over but I got over that and called him done. I am really really happy with how his eyes came out though.
  19. So I've been painting Khanjira for a long time now. Like for a year-ish now. The last time I picked it up I just wasn't happy with how it was turning out and just put it on the shelf and there it sat. Until now. I've finally picked it back up again, I'm not terribly disappointed in how it's turning out but it's still got a long way to go. I figure by making this WIP thread I will hopefully get it done in a timely manner. And by timely manner I mean by Valentine's Day. No particular reason for the date, it's just a date that I will remember. Anyway, here is my progress so far: Ignore t
  20. Here is a link to my blog where I posted all the photos. I didn't want to just stick them all here since there are quite a few and didn't want to overload people with photos. The photography and lighting definitely isn't the best but I'm working on that. Thanks for looking, C&C welcome. https://sparrowmarieminis.wordpress.com/2017/04/20/shadows-of-brimstone-resin-minis/
  21. Freshly washed, only 4 of the 20 heroes need repaired. The 3 villains still need assembled but I thought it best to scrub them down before gluing. Next up: primer test.
  22. As part of this month's getting to know you thread a challenge was proposed, try a technique you've never done before. For me that was OSL. So I used the Mousling Druid to attempt this. For a first try I don't think it turned out too bad. The lighting in my room isn't great so I hope it reads okay.
  23. Going to use this guy as my first attempt at OSL. This was inspired by Talespinner's challenge in the getting to know each other thread.
  24. I painted up some angels, this is the first time I've painted feathers that I can recall. This is also my first attempt at painting marble. My eyes are slowly getting better. Edit: There are some better pics of the second and third angels a few posts down. Deva: Angel of Shadow: Angel of Protection:
  25. This was my project for the morning, spent maybe 4 hours on it. The spots on the hat are my attempt at stars.
