Not sure I have posted any of my recent Minis anywhere ( if I did please excuse my forgetfulness). Recently I decided to work my way through one of my mini games. The infamous Super Dungeon Explore. I know a lot of people are not too fond of ninja devision due to various Kickstarters not being delivered ( I personally am in for Relic Knights: 2nd edition ) but I felt like I should paint them anyway. This is a big project for me since I'm a real slow poke and I would like to invite you along the (hopefully not too painful) way. Grab your rations and a duvet because you are in for a long one. I dislike repeat paint jobs which exactly why I started with the unique models, procastinating on the stuff I like least the longest (what could possibly go wrong). I try to stick as closely as possible to the original colour schemes. First one up. A tree.

Ok, I’m a fan of the Final Fantasy series, and one of the things that I like to do is convert chibi minis into some of my favorite videogame characters. Naturally, one of my favorites is Auron from Final Fantasy X. He’s such a badass. I started out with the Goemon mini from Ninja All Stars (which is a fine mini in its own right). Everything that isn’t Goemon was made from green stuff. All together, I think he came out rather well.

A while ago, Sodapop Miniatures released the Deeproot Scout- a character I think we can all agree had some inspiration in Nintendo's favorite elf. Naturally, my favorite incarnation of the Hero of Time to base him on (Link to the Past) as seen here The hair is red (even pink) because I was working from the pixel art rather than the art in the book. More recently, Sodapop released a resculpt of the character- so I decided that the best thing to do would be to level him up a bit. So here is my Deeproot Scout painted up as Link with Blue Male, the reforged Master Sword, red shield and boomerang.

Here are two minis that I really love. I love how the Super Dungeon Explore setting has the princesses as the prophesied heroes that will eventually overcome the dark lord. No waiting around to be rescued for them. Princess Emerald is really full of character. I love the steampunk feel she has. I chose a color scheme based on her namesake. I'm planning on doing this with the other princesses as they come out. This Princess Ruby is a re-sculpt. To be fair, I was quite fond of the original sculpt for Princess Ruby, but I recognize that as the style of Super Dungeon Explore evolved, she was a little left behind (Ruby would be far shorter than her sister princesses at least). And I was quite happy to paint her up again. As with Emerald, my color scheme was based on her namesake: So we're waiting on the Super Dungeon Arcade box to come out so that I can have a go with Princess Amethyst next.

Here are a couple of fun little minis I painted up from The Forgotten King set. I'm not sure that there's much more to say about them. The NMM was fun:

I must admit that I have quite a fondness for things that are at once creepy and cute. That makes the Grabby House the perfect spawn point in Super Dungeon Explore It turns out I have a bit of experience painting zombies. I went with a different skin tone for each of them. I also added a little touch at the end with some gloss (to make the cuts seem more fresh.

Here's a boss from Super Dungeon Explore. I split my set with my wife, and I was really surprised that I got to paint this one (she got Jack, so it isn't like I always get the best ones). I decided to go with a fairly limited color scheme for her. I don't remember why exactly, but I really did enjoy the pink pumpkin. Here she is.

These are some trolls from Super Dungeon Explore (the Mistmourn Coast Warband). As with most of my own Super Dungeon set, I painted each one in its own color scheme. The yellow troll colors I chose because they match the trolls from Fantasy Forest. Fantasy Forest is an old TSR game I played when I was five- it is basically like Candy Land except that you get ambushed by orcs and kobolds along the way. The spawn point was just perfectly designed for an OSL effect, so I had to go that direction with it:

Hello again, everyone! As those of you who have been watching her WIP know, this mini has been an exercise in MAXIMUM CUTENESS!!! and I hope that that is exactly what I achieved! She was quite a bit of fun, and now I have finally gotten the dual desires to paint a SDE mini and to paint some pink NMM out of my system (for a little while, at least ) Thanks a bunch for looking, and I hope you like her!

Super Dungeon Explore Silver Chevalier
Kuro Cleanbrush posted a topic in Works in Progress: Painting
Hello again, everyone! Well, after years of wanting to go, it looks like I'm finally going to be able to visit GenCon now that I live in Indiana, and therefore I simply cannot go empty-handed to the miniature competition!!! I saw that Soda Pop Miniatures gives out awards for the best entries among their minis, and I have wanted to paint up a good SDE mini for a while now. I have also really wanted to give some cute pink NMM a try for an equally long time, so I settled on painting the Silver Chevalier and giving that pink armor a go: As I add colors and clean up the trim, I think things will look steadily nicer! Lastly, I just have to say (for anyone who has seen them) that Mocha's incredible chibi paint jobs of late have left me really inspired, so I appreciate the call to bring my A-game!- 28 replies

Some miniatures represent a real challenge. They’re loaded with so much detail that you may need to find references to figure out what all of it is, and even then you can run into difficulties making each individual bit pop. Lining each piece, and making sure the colors coordinate while also keeping the value contrast high enough that each bit stands out just enough (and not too much) can be challenging and rewarding. Then there are minis like these Super Dungeon Explore’s ghosts. Somehow, I find myself absolutely loving these designs, despite their simplicity (I mean, we’ve got one area here, then the eyes). Naturally, I couldn’t resist painting them in Pac Man colors.

Here is one of my favorite sets of minis, of all time. They're the Fungal Growth Spawn point for Super Dungeon Explore, and I based the color schemes on the various colors of mushroom monsters from the Dragon Quest series.

There's really not much to say here: so, one of my favorite little standby pieces to paint: Furniture. Decent Tabletop I guess.

Here are how I painted up my Rabid Squirrels for Super Dungeon Explore. I only have three of them here- because my wife claims half of the chibi minis I get. It is a good thing we got so many of the same sculpt here, or we would have had to fight over them (she got most of the pets...) Here they are:

So, following the Forgotten King Kickstarter by Soda Pop games, I decided to see what SDE played like. I received the base set for my birthday, back in April and started slowly assembling all the parts. What I found, was that the miniatures are outstandingly fun to paint. These have really pushed me to improve my blends (there's tons of large flat space) and work on making my colors bright and saturated. I've started with the heroes. I'm thinking that each one will be predominately one color, basically in homage to the old 8bit RPGs like Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior. Comments and critiques are welcome.

Slowly getting through all of this project. Hopefully soon I can get a group shot of everything from the kobold warbands finished. Just a few touchups here and there are needed, but these are essentially done. I definitely am ready to start the arena style battling for this game, even if I am still in preference of the skeleton groups. Well enjoy the sights!

Here is the second Rex that came with my SDE game. I decided to do this one up in purples instead of green for the skintone. I like the way it turned out, though I am beginning to see that a new system for photographing things is in order... Oh well, at least he is finished for now. Still a few places that may need touchups, but nothing too drastic. Hope you all enjoy seeing him!

Here is my final figure for the month probably. Rexie from the SDE range. One of the two I have available, though I think I may try to color the other one blue or red instead of green. I really do like how his weapon turned out.

So, here's my take on the giant vampire bat from Super Dungeon Explore. Part of me thinks I should have gone with bright green to match Dracula's "True Form" from Symphony of the Night, but for some reason I decided to go with a more subdued color pattern. Here he is.

Well, I've ended up getting a lot more fireflow denizens than I ever anticipated I would. My wife painted the first two sets of fire gels (they're so cute, she couldn't help herself) but I got to paint the third set. Naturally, all of the more normal ideas were taken (you know, painting them as if they were some kind of fire, maybe even different colored fires). So I took an evening, and put on some Doctor who and here's what I ended up with.

Since I'll be finishing the minis in my Doctrine WIP thread pretty much one at a time, they'll each be getting their own Show Off thread. First up, SDE Kisa: Her varnish didn't go on quite evenly, and dried all weird. I managed to smooth it out, but had already taken the photos (and I'm lazy). As always, C&C welcome.

Here is the fine undead captain from Super Dungeon Explore. I rather enjoyed painting him- especially the trimming. He turned out just a bit darker than most of my SDE, but I feel that this is working well with the undead feel. I'll have to give someone pink hair to make up for it.

Well, Roxxor is probably the toughest boss around. Although a healing Von Drak can be quite a handful. My wife created a stone form for him as well- I don't have any pictures of that right now, but here's the big man:

I recently painted up King Starfire. He's a leveled up version of the boss dragon from the core set- and he's a pretty sizeable mini. I rather enjoyed painting him up, and I felt that the starscape worked very well on him. I used a simpler version of the starscape patterns on the original Starfire's wings, so I felt it appropriate to give this Starfire a more elaborate version. The dead knight on his base was a nice touch. He's simply huge for Super Dungeon, but we played with him the other day, and he's tall enough that the other characters can stand at his base without any issues. I've posted him up to Coolmini for anyone who cares to vote. Here are some pictures.
