  1. Some thoughts on The CavCon tournament. The Good: The tournament was well organized. The terrain looked great. Jon and Tim were available to answer questions and explain the reasons behind various decisions at any time. I've never had more one on one time to interact with a game developer ever. Jon went out of his way to walk me though several parts of the game that I didn't understand and he was open to feedback to improve the game for me (and hopefully others). The veteran players Todd Farnholtz, Ross Hines, and Brandon Baker were friendly, open, and available to explain both the rules and their thoughts about the 'meta'. Todd and Ross are also fabulous painters with lots of experience in the niche of painting giant robots to look like giant robots. They shared tips and feedback with me which I appreciate a lot, The Bad: The tournament terrain looked awesome but it's nature and layout limited the kinds of forces that were viable in the tournament. The tallest piece of cover on the boards I saw was a level 3 hill. That is it in the background of the photo where my figures - in red and grey - are learning the meaning of the phrase 'shock check'. :) The deployment zone of my opponent (Ross Hines) had an elevation 2 hill just outside of it. All Ross had to do was walk forward for one activation and then his CAVs - in blue and black - were at elevation 4 which lets him see over the highest elevation terrain on the board. On his first turn he could fire Guided Missiles 6" deployment + 7" Move + 64" Extreme range = 77". The playing area is only 72" long. [Edited to correct the Silverback's movement from 5" to 7"] I literally had no where to hide from his fire. Additionally, being at elevation 4 allowed him to see over the intervening 'woods' which are only elevation 3. I could only gain the benefit of cover by hugging against it within one inch. The trees did serve to slow down my forward progress as I had to either go around them or spend extra movement to go through them. I've only played about a dozen games of CAV so I may be missing an aspect of the terrain rules or some strategy that mitigates the lack of LOS blocking terrain. The Excellent: The people. The models. The game. No better example of good people than Jeff my second round opponent. He is a veteran CAV player who helped me through the rules I was unfamiliar with and shared numerous stories about the history of the game. The new Firedrake model is beautiful. I love it's angular lines and the compactness of it's rocket launchers - I bought 6 of them. :) The game plays fast once you get several games under your belt. The rules flow logically and I found by the end of the tournament I rarely had to ask how something worked. Perhaps the last and best compliment that I can give is that I'm already planning my next force. I have the paint scheme in mind and plan to experiment with heavily weathered CAVs. I hope to meet and play CAV with all of you at the tournament next year.
  2. In a different thread Vince put out a call for terrain assistance the night before ReaperCon. He needed a big hill. (A table was planned that called for a graveyard on a hill.) A link to that thread. I saw the thread and a few PMs and text messages later it was determined that there was a hill hiding in my rather disheveled workshop room that might do. It looked like this: It was an unfinished slab of pink foam (the top had a basecoat on it). This shot was originally sent via phones to [give] Vince an idea of how big it was. That is a Storm Giant from the KS 1 batch along with a paint bottle for scale (I lack a copy of Sir Forscale).
  3. 4/13/14 EDIT: A sample of the tournament scenarios is now available. Thank you for bearing with us. 3/31/14 EDIT: Pool play have been given a 5 Turn maximum. Finals games have no Turn maximum. There is also no scenarios and no scoring for the finals games; they are pure kill 'em all, last (wo)man standing. If neither side in a finals game is able to eliminate the other, then the player that has inflicted the most casualties wins and will advance. Terrain for the tables has been finalized, and the scenarios for pool play are about a third finished. A representative sampling of them will be posted soon. In keeping with the last few years, the scenarios have been geared to fit the Western theme of the convention, without completely breaking the fantasy genre of the game. 2/10/14 EDIT: This post will be updated periodically as more information is ready for release regarding the Warlord 2 tournament for ReaperCon 2014. If questions are raised that require clarification for the tournament, those questions (and answers) will be added to this post as well. So, without further ado... Tournament Schedule The ReaperCon 2014 Warlord Tournament is a 1000 point, single list open pool play qualifier, followed by a two (2)-round seeded finals. Each player must play a minimum of three (3) pool play games to qualify for advancement to the finals. These pool play rounds are scheduled as follows: Slot 1: Thursday, 1pm-3pm Slot 2: Thursday, 3pm-5pm Slot 3: Thursday, 7pm-9pm Slot 4: Thursday, 9pm-11pm Slot 5: Friday, 9am-11am Slot 6: Friday, 11am-1pm Slot 7: Friday, 2pm-4pm Slot 8: Friday, 4pm-6pm Slot 9: Friday, 7pm-9pm Slot 10: Friday, 9pm-11pm Slot 11: Saturday, 9am-11am Slot 12: Saturday, 11am-1pm Tickets will be $1.00 for each round you play. There will be a limited number of tables available for the tournament during each slot, so plan to play as early in the convention as you can, or you may miss out. For this reason, please also limit your registration to a maximum of three (3) rounds; if there are additional seats during any of the slots, players are welcome to get in additional games. However, priority will be given to players that have not yet met their three game minimum qualification for the finals. There will be a very limited number of tickets available onsite (much like the classes) if you happen to miss out on getting them during pre-registration. The tournament finals will be held Saturday afternoon, from 2pm-6pm. It will consist of two (2) rounds. All players that are advanced to the finals will play both rounds. The Army List Each player will bring a single 1000 point army list and play that same army list for each round of the tournament (inclusive of the finals). Each player is responsible for bringing a minimum of two hard copiers of their army roster. One of these must be presented to the tournament organizer for verification no later than 30 minutes prior to the start of the player's first game of the tournament. The second hard copy is to be made available to the player's opponent for each game. The hard copy of the list must contain - at a minimum - the actual total point value of the list, troop composition, all equipment (and which models the equipment is assigned to), and the datacards for each model in the army. Printouts from the ReaperGames.com army builder are acceptable, but any equipment should immediate follow the model with which it is associated, as follows: Troop 1 Duke Gerard Holy Weapon Armor of Courage Ian, Mage Apprentice Book of Tactics Templar Knight x 7 Templar Ironspine x 4 Musician In this example, the Holy Weapon and Armor of Courage both immediate follow Duke Gerard, indicating that he has both items. The Book of Tactics belongs to Ian, as it follows his listing. The Musician is assigned to one of the Templar Ironspines (the player is responsible for identifying to their opponent which specific model carries it). Players will be allowed to choose the faction doctrines they wish to use before the start of each game in the tournament, after assignment of scenario and opponent, but prior to deployment or any other game-related actions. Official proxy rules are observed for the tournament. Painted armies are not required, but are encouraged. Tournament Specific Rules 1) All models using the Swift Attack ability must have space to make base to base contact with the enemy model they wish to attack on their action. 2) When using the Summoned (Demon) SA granted by the Gate ability of the Demonic Conclave doctrine for the Darkspawn faction, demons summoned in this manner must be of equal or lesser point value than the summoning model. 3) Sir Broderick, Justicar is allowed to lead Justicar soldiers. 4) The abilities gained by the Howl portion of the Koborlas "Call of the Wild" Doctrine can be used as a free action once per game turn. Tournament Format Each round of the tournament will consist of a "kill 'em all" format game. Players will have 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes) of the 2 hour slot to complete the game, 5 Turn maximum. Each game is worth of total of 20 points; 1 point is awarded for each full 100 points of the enemy eliminated (the full 10 points are awarded for defeating the entire force, regardless of the actual list value), and 1 point is awarded for each full 100 points remaining of the player's army. Equipment cost is considered to be part of the model associated with it, with the exception of totems (the points for which may be earned either by defeating the entire army, or by defiling it during the course of the game). If there are any unearned points, these are divided equally between the two sides, with any odd point awarded to the side with the highest points from kills. For each pool play game, players will be paired based on similar average cumulative game score (adjusted to avoid repeated pairings where possible during the first three games). If a player is able to play more than three games, they may drop their one lowest score, averaging all remaining game scores. Thus, a player who plays three games uses all three scores, a player with four games drops the lowest and averages the remaining three, and a player with five games drops the lowest and averages the remaining four. Table priority will always be given to players that have played less than three games vs. those that have played three or more. Space is at a premium this year, and the intent is to accommodate as many players as possible, with as flexible a schedule as possible, while maximizing the use of the tables once qualifiers have been completed for the majority of players. In addition, each game will also consist of a scenario component. These will award Victory Points (VP) based on the specifics of the scenario. VPs are tracked separately from game scores, and are cumulative, regardless of the number of games played. VPs will be used as a tie-breaker, if necessary, for seeding both within pool play and for finals. A limited number of players (based on the final number of players in the tournament overall) will be advanced to the finals bracket on Saturday afternoon. Finals games have no Turn maximum. There is also no scenarios and no scoring for the finals games; they are pure kill 'em all, last (wo)man standing. If neither side in a finals game is able to eliminate the other, then the player that has inflicted the most casualties wins and will advance. Seeding will feature high vs. low in the first round of the bracket, with a final of winners vs. winners and losers vs. losers in the second round. These games will be used to determine final placements in the tournament, and crown the new Warlord for 2014. The Scenarios Please "Save As" the following document for the ReaperCon 2104 Warlord Tournament sample scenarios: RCON2014WL2TOURNSAMPLES.pdf Come Get Some! ~v
  4. Due to circumstances beyond our control, some of the terrain for the Warlord tournament appears that it will not be ready in time. I'm working to keep the existing scenarios (as opposed to writing new ones at the last minute), but I have limited space to bring items to the con with me, and even then, I don't have everything I need. So, this is where you can help. If you have access to wargaming terrain, and can get any of this to me by the time the con starts Thursday afternoon, please let me know. The wish list is as follows: Dirt road sections (far less important, but it'd be nice) Large hill sections If you can help, please PM me. ~v
  5. The ReaperCon 2013 Warlord Tournament will be a 3 round tourney, with each round lasting approx 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes). Each player will bring a single 1000 point army list and play that same army list for all three rounds. Players will be allowed to choose faction doctrines to be in affect before the start of each round. The ReaperCon 2013 Warlord Tournament will be held at the Hotel this year. Some people know that from a different thread, but I am restating it for those that missed this information. Subject to change based on Reaper's needs, the start times (that means deployment time) for each round are currently set at... Round 1: 9 am - 11 am Round 2: 11 am - 1 pm Round 3: 2 pm - 4 pm This schedule allows players to get in their three rounds and still be able to go back and enjoy some time over at the main Reaper campus or other offerings at the hotel. We know that a majority of people are attending to take painting and sculpting classes, we know that even with having the earlier start time for the tourney it will still conflict with some class times. We try our best to make the tournament available to everyone by offering it twice. That is to say, there will be a tournament on Friday, and a tournament on Saturday. You can choose which day to participate. But, you must be able to participate in all three rounds on the day that you choose. At this time, a maximum of 12 people can register per day on a first come first served basis for the tourney for a total of 24 available slots. Consider this thread as the sign up sheet to reserve your spot in the tournament. I will update the list below as people sign up. In the spirit of a Dark Circus theme, the style of the tournament this year will be a little different than prior years. Instead of having 3 different known scenarios that each player will play, this year, each round of the tourney will be a straight up kill them all to the last man standing battle. But, of course we will be adding some random circus tricks and traps that also must be accomplished along the way. These items will be random in each game based on a flip of the card, roll of the dice, etc... You might have the enemy right where you want them, lined up in your sites, when the next flipped card gives you 1 turn to accomplish something an unrelated goal in order to earn a victory point. How you are able to handle the commands of the card flips and still destroy your enemy will determine how well you do in the tourney. Tournament specific rules for the ReaperCon 2013 Warlord Tournament: 1) All models using the Swift Attack ability must have space to make base to base contact with the enemy model they wish to attack on their action. If you have any questions, post them here and I will do my best to answer them promptly. EDIT 3-27-2013: You must turn in your 1000 point roster before the start of the first game. As an incentive, any player that emails (or private message me here on boards) me their final roster by Wednesday April 17th at 6 pm CST, will receive a bonus personal Victory point objective card that will give you the opportunity to earn an additional victory point that you can use during any one of your games. EDIT 4-1-2013: One thing to note, although there has never been a rule stating that one must field a painted army, last year Ed gave a $75 Reaper credit reward for the best painted army in the tourney. just something to think about....
  6. Wow already about to start our fourth session, its going by so quickly. We would like to congratulate Tiffany Rogers for breaking the 300 point mark and earning herself a tier1 prize, following closely behind is themudhead, Richard Burge, Kristen Lyon, and David Jackson. This next session we will be running a little differently. The deadline will be longer and the points will be much higher, this is a chance for anyone who has not taken the opportunity to participate to catch up drastically. The next piece is to be a diorama, subject matter is open to anything you would like to do. The entire piece must be no smaller than that of a shoebox, but can be as large as you want to make it. There is no cap to the points you can earn during this session, but here are some guidelines. 1. each small miniature will garnish an extra 10 points(smaller than 28mm human size) 2. each medium miniature will garnish 25 points (28 mm human size) 3 each large miniature will garnish 40 points ( 2-4 inches tall) 4 each epic miniature will garnish 70 points ( 5 inches or larger) 5 every feature that adds character to the overall piece will increase the final total by an additional 5%, this can add up quickly if you make something totally epic. The cutoff is November 22 at midnight Pacific Standard Time, good luck everybody and show us what ya got Post submissions here or send them to [email protected] See below for further rules and explanations Competition Rules: The contest will be running continuously from now until the kickstarter launch. There is no fee for entry, all that is required is your name and email address, later on after the kickstarter you will be sent a email asking for your address and any other pertinent information. Prizes will include terrain , bases and other items from the kickstarter campaign. Submissions must be painted by you and fit the current theme You many submit more than one entry, however only one will be judged during any given session. A session last from the time you are given a theme until the time you are awarded your points for the entry at the next issue release. The exact dates will be indicated in each issue in the allocated location at the end of these rules along with the new theme. Limit your submission to 5 or less images, with at least 1 front view, and 1 back view. All submissions should be made through a direct Facebook message or sent to us through email at [email protected] , or be posted in this thread Whomever has the highest scoring miniature for the session will receive a spot in the featured column and as our Facebook cover photo for their mini. Criteria for judging includes: Craftsmanship , how good you mini looks when all is said and done, accounts for 50% of your points for the session. Creativity, we want to see the best you can do, make your pieces interesting, nobody is going to judge you, except for maybe the judges, but that’s our job, the majority of creativity takes place in the base, but modifying minis also works to this advantage, just be sure to include a photo of the unmodified mini when you submit. This accounts for an additional 50% of your points for the session. Theme modifier , if your submission obviously fits the theme you will be awarded an additional 10% to the total points earned for the session, if your submission does not somehow fall into the initial theme, you will only be eligible for half of the total points for the session. Each session you are eligible for 100 points, 110 if you count the theme modifier. At the end of each session your points will be added up and your progress will be shown. Surprise us with something truly spectacular and you may be awarded some bonus points. There are quite a few different tiers for prizes, based on the amount of points you accrue , as points are earned new tiers will unlock showing how many points you need to get to the next tier, and the approximate value of the prize for that tier. Once you have reached a tier you are eligible for a prize, keep painting minis to make the prizes better.
  7. I was searching through the events at GenCon this year and saw or rather didn't see a Warlord tournament. This kinda bummed me out. I had so much fun at last year's tournament I was hoping to enter again this year. In fact, I didn't see any Reaper sponsored events except a speed painting competition. No Dragon's Night Out, no Reich of the Dead, and no intro to Warlord games. Anyone know anything about this? Am I searching wrong or have the events not be entered yet?
  8. I'm so excited to share this news: Game Empire Painting Tournament March 25, 2012, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7051 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, #306 San Diego, CA 92117 858-576-1525 Cost: FREE!!!!! Da Roolz: Minis from any company, current or defunct, are acceptable. Mini must be primed and assembled when registered. (This rule can be bent, but will waste your precious painting time.) Primed and assembled minis will be made available in the “up to 28 mm categories”, while supplies last. Pre-painted minis not accepted for this tournament. Please register with a monitor before beginning to apply color. We will number the bottom of your mini. Use your stuff, use stuff from the supplies. It’s all good. Seasoned pros are likely to have their own supplies and should leave the communal supplies for the amateurs. We’re not sticklers, it’s just good manners. Don’t be a jerk. If you’re nasty to the other competitors, you may be asked to leave. Even young’uns are expected to have good manners. Basing: (That means adding cool stuff, like rocks and sticks to the floor of your mini.) This isn’t necessary, but highly encouraged. And it sure makes your mini look awesome… Due to their overwhelming awesomeness, Game Empire employees are not allowed to enter this contest. Too bad you rock. Categories: Young Bloods: up to and including age 14—must have ID or a guardian to verify age. No professionals. Prizes awarded to first, second, and third places. (all sizes) Pro: If you have ever been paid to paint minis, this is your category. Two size categories: a.) up to 28mm, and b.) over 28mm. Yes, Virginia, there are professionals under age 15. Get over it. They might just kick your hiney. Amateur: No professionals. Two size categories: a.) up to 28mm, and b.) over 28mm. (If you have ever been paid to paint minis, enter in the pro category. We expect you to be honest about this.) People’s Choice: All entries from other categories may be submitted. Anyone may enter. This is a special award judged by the public. Schedule Registration is all day, beginning at 10 a.m. Please register all minis and hang on to the claim ticket we give you! 4:45 p.m. All entries must be completed and ready for judging. 5 p.m. Judging begins. You need not be present to win… but your mini does! Minis will then be placed in our chess case for People’s Choice Award. This will be voted on by the public (one vote per person—duh!) over the next week (March 25-31) and tallied April 2. Winners will be announced April 2. (Yes, you can vote for your own mini. Yes, kids can vote too—it ain’t the presidency.) Our fabulous Judges: 2012 Broadside Bash Award-winning Allan Pyle Golden Demon award-winner Bob Felix. (Subject to availability, but it looks good!) Judges’ decisions are final. These guys are pros and know what they’re looking for. The judges reserve the right to move an entry into a different category if they deem it appropriate. COA Clause: Once in our care, we will take special care of your minis, but we can accept no responsibility for loss or damage to individual entries. Models are entered into the competition at the artist’s own risk. If they come alive and fly around the store, we’ll talk later. Rules lawyers should talk to Desiree about rule changes BEFORE the tournament. Suggestions about future tournaments will be given consideration. This is Desiree’s first shot at it, so give her a break. If this topic should be moved to a different forum, no prob. This was my best guess!
