  1. I tried to use a quick-rigged photo setup for these. Hopefully these look better than my Goldar pics. Also I tried something different on the mini. I used a coat of brown liner as a base coat after having seen discussion about it, then dry brushed up from there. Not sure how I feel about it.
  2. Adding to the eternal march of the Giants, my first completed pieces from the "Blood Rage" Kickstarter are the big guys. First we have the Frost Giant: A rather bestial Fire Giant, who apparently got the short end of the sealant on his crown...to be fixed, as I only noticed now: The Mountain Giant (my personal favorite and one of the reasons I had to back it, as a Kickstarter exclusive) The slightly less giant Troll: And some group shots: And one with Sir Forscale, for scale:
  3. Folks this is the lovely Bones troll that Pochi sent me for the fall exchange. I am sorry for the delay in posting pictures but the Troll suffers from weak ankles and I had to let him lean back to get decent pictures. ( bassically stood him on his side and let gravity do its thing). After taking these pictures I will be attempting to stiffen up those ankles so that he can stay upgright permanently! Fair warning this is picture heavy as there was sooooooo much on this mini and his base I just couldn't keep the number of pictures down. I also apologize for my poor photography skills ,,, I have none! First the full mini in all its glory! Next the main character Please note the lovely choice of colors and the blending is just excellent... (also as some will note.. there is Orange!!!!) and the drool.. (well done) And now for the supporting characters: the Iguana: the Butterfly: The log and skull: The rubber? plant with a small creature as well. Note the roots into the swamp water: and the Rose! what can I say.. I LOVE IT Thanks Pochi!
  4. This is one of three figures from the Ral Partha (now Iron Wind Metals) set "Wolfram's Gang." The set has three trolls, a woman with a rifle and pistol, a cyborg-troll, and this fella. His clothing was a little more eccentric than the others', and all that bare skin inspired me to try my hand at painting tiny tattoos on his skull and arms. There's a WIP thread for a whole lot of Shadowrun trolls here. Show-Off threads for the other Shadowrunners are: Reaper's own Caine, Cyber-Troll, a Troll woman from Wolfram's Gang, an ork woman street samurai, an Oni bouncer, a cyber-troll in reflective armor, and the unbelievably over-the-top Lord Torgo.
  5. I'm trying to get more monsters available for the random encounters in Frostgrave. First off is a Frost Giant, converted from the Pathfinder Battles: Dungeons Deep Frost Giant. She wasn't directly intended for Frostgrave, I was going to convert her to match the Frost Giant Jarl from "Giants Revisited"...then realized I misremembered the art, and she already WAS based off that piece. So she got a heavy infantry makeover:
  6. Trying to expand the bestiary for "Frostgrave". The Frost Trolls (Yetis) are former Shaggy Man from HeroClix, the apes are also former clix, and the Frost Giant is a Pathfinder Frost Giant converted to a heavy infantry type...not specifically for Frostgrave but fit the theme. First paints are applied, and Lars the Linkboy is there for scale.
  7. This is the mini I painted for robinh for the Fall Exchange. It is Kallaguk from Bones II. Robin asked for a monster and said he liked orange (grin). I tried to work some orange in here and there. I tried to paint him to look somewhat amphibious. Robin's mini got to be my guinea pig for several things I have never done before. This is the first sculpting I have ever done and the first time I have attempted water. Both turned out ok, I definitely need more practice but overall I liked the finished project. Some of the pictures make me cringe because they seem to shine giant spotlights on places I could have done better! I really did like how he turned out and am going to have to get another to paint for myself. My favorite part - the drool! I hid lots of little things in the base. There is a fish skeleton in the water between his feet, a chameleon, a stick monster, another little monster lurking under a bush, and a sheep (or demon) skull. Lots of pictures, I will post some in the first reply. Hopefully Robin has better pictures than I do. I am not a very good mini photographer.
  8. This one started out primed with Reaper Brown Liner (not shown). First I very thinly washed color over it, green on the base and two shades of blue over the body, allowing the Brown Liner to show through.
  9. Finished this one a couple of weeks ago, but finally made a new light box. I had him lying around at a weird half-done skin stage, where I'd tried a bit of ink washing and dry brushing with minimal success. Decided to get stuck in and finish him off anyway, and with a combination of dark blue shading and white highlighting I think I got him looking pretty good. Also gave me a chance to practice my metallics a bit more. It's my first time doing a snow base, which I thought came out pretty well, using the old baking soda, PVA glue and white paint technique. He's also the biggest mini that I've completed. Soon I hope to be able to unleash him on some unsuspecting adventurers in Frostgrave! Just hope they're not my unsuspecting adventurers...
  10. I was doing home remodeling and was self-exiled from my home and paint desk for over two months, so when I got access to my hobby room and paint desk and reorganized, I collected all my unfinished projects on the desk and realized my shelf of shame had grown to unacceptable proportions. I decided to tackle finishing as many of these pieces just to get them off my desk before I move on, even if I speed paint them or cut steps, but I am tired of looking at too many primed-only or part painted minis. So here is the first wave: Mashaaf which was my favorite to paint among these, the bones mummy lich I had nearly finished six months ago, which was nice except had too soft details on the face, the Scibor elven ruins, Mega Miniatures pack mules I base coated two years ago, and some GriffinTamer terrain pieces. These are not my best work by far but I'm going to call them done for now to get them off my desk and maybe some day I will go back and add some more finishing touches.
  11. This week I completed the Mountain Troll from the Bones II, Expansion Pack 1. I tend to hesitate to select the large figures to do, as I somehow find the prospect of painting them intimidating; and I want to try and make more of an effort to work on them in the future. This guy, for all his size, was a nice easy figure to complete. For the complete painting write-up, please see my blog: http://allbonesabout.blogspot.com/2015/08/mountain-troll-bones-ii-figue.html
  12. My exchange partner this time was Thes Hunter. I decided on the awesome Battle Troll. I figured it should give her players a good scare! Here are my less than awesome photos (I snagged a few just before packing it, at work, on the deadline...) Hopefully Thes will post some much better photos at some point
  13. Hi all, I per my habit, I painted my bones mini by batch, and the theme for this one was "the dark swamp". I imagined that the swamp was plagued by a new aquatic creature. So the current inhabitants of the swamp (Troll, frogmen and turlemen) banded together to rid the pond from this thing. (As you can tell, writing fluff is not my forte...) And a few pics of the troll: The tree was sulpted in clay, the base of the scenery is insulation foam, the vegetation is taken from dollar store easter decor... C&C welcome
  14. So are those tumors on his back or is he multiplying like a Gremlin. More trolls in Bones 3 please.
  15. He's like part ogre, part Creature from the Black Lagoon, and part stegosaurus.
  16. Knocking out all my trolls. 2 to go.
  17. This week I completed the Ice Troll from the Bones II "Expansion Pack I". I'm particularly pleased with how his face came out. For the step-by-step painting write-up, please see my Bones painting blog: http://allbonesabout.blogspot.com/2015/06/ice-troll-bones-ii-figure.html
  18. Had a lot of fun painting this beast. Reminds me of Ganon or one of his Moblins.
  19. Finally feeling confident about putting this together properly so I thought I'd get started. Skin base coat is Green Black, will be using Brown Liner on the armor..
  20. Swamp Denizens from Grenadier Shambling Mound, Giant Snake, Basilisk, Shaugin, Troll, and Gnolls Painted these this last December before Christmas. The two Lizard Men I posted on 4/1 are part of this set.
  21. The two minis below are what I did for my Spring Exchange Partner FireElemental . Since they have now been received I can post some pictures for the rest of you to enjoy... hopefully! I apologize in advance for the picture quality... First is 60007 SinSpawn sculpted by Derek Schubert Followed by the ever dangerous Pathfinder Troll 60021 sculpted by Jason Wiebe.. and he looks hungry! Robinh
  22. My Icingstead army for Warlord requires two Ice Trolls. For the first one, I used the 03407 Hellborn Troll, sculpted by Ben Siens, as recommended. I also used the awesome paintjob by Michael Genet as inspiration. The Gargoyle Leader, also sculpted by Ben Siens, has a similar pose to the Hellborn Troll. I sculpted a scaly back to conceal the wing insertion tabs, and to help match the style of his larger buddy. To make up for some of the size difference, I put him on a large rock. Here they are together. The Hellborn Troll with his mini me.
  23. Uskuluz Greyhide THE WIP: 14455 Uskuluz Greyhide "When you crawl upon a deep dungeon be weary of the Greyhide troll. The evil he summons will shake you to your bones. Atop his staff is a creature of the dark spawn legion; an insect of time long past. Adorn upon him are relics and rings of curious adventures... Do no go looking for the Greyhide and do not have your thoughts dwell on him... He will summon you and with a maddening fury you will seek him..."
  24. Started work on this Uskuluz Greyhide about 85% of the way through Anval Thricedamned. I think you all will like this progression everyone. Please let me know of some color choice you might think for the bits and bobs hanging off of him. ___________________________________________ The base is done with spackle, sand and some old pieces from a Reaper figure WAY back in the day. 10points if you can figure it out! C&C Welome!
  25. This is an old-school heavy-metal style Shadowrun gang member cyber troll, Lord Torgo, formerly of Ral Partha, now sold by Iron Wind Metals, both with the stock number 20-590. Which is to say, he's a cyberpunk miniature from a 1990s vision of the near future full of dystopian tech and magical mutations. He's a huge mutant with horns. Discussion of the figure to follow after the pictures (which now that I see them large are looking in need of some improvement). I did some playing around with texture and color and light effects here. The figure had some interesting details and surface types. Like all old Ral Partha figures, it has an integral base, in this case sculpted paving with some litter already on it. This figure was a pain and a half to assemble. The supplied chain was too short* and needed to be replaced (but I thought a real chain looked better anyway). The axe on his back is ridiculously top-heavy and attaches at two small points well below the center of balance; I added a wire "staple" to help hold it on. I was not able to find any other images of this figure painted online. It might be because It might be because he is so absurdly over the top heavy metal. Or it could be because he is rather fiddly, fragile, and difficult to assemble. The figure is front-heavy and on a narrow base, making it prone to tipping forward, and it hunches forward so it's hard to see the figure properly from a normal gamer's above the table perspective. A WIP thread, covering this figure, Reaper's "50287: Caine, Cyber-Troll," and several other old Ral Partha Shadowrun figures, can be found here. There are other Show Off threads for the companion piece Shadowrunners (mostly trolls): Reaper's own Caine, Cyber-Troll, a Troll woman from Wolfram's Gang, a Wolfram's gang troll with tattoos, an Oni bouncer, a cyber-troll in reflective armor, and an ork woman street samurai. *This was cached on Google but seems to have vanished in the meantime, which is why I copied it rather than linking. I'm not the only one who found the chain too short:
