  1. I did this for my friend's xmas gift this year. He's a big 80's kid, too. Battle report! The challenge here was trying to make them all individual more than just their head bands. I wanted to differ their greens a little between them. I also wanted them to look sewer-ridden and dirty, but still hold contrast. Came out pretty nice. Highs: *Donatello was easily my favorite that came out of this batch. His purple was a great mix and stood out. *Leo had a fun blue that was brighter than expected and gave me the idea to put their respective colors in more areas on them. *eyes were simple and effective. *use of washes and lining came out good. * muscles all have strong definition (no pun) Lows: *bandages look grungy as intended, but did get a little too bright in the edges. *absolute fail in trying to base with green on airbrush. I may need to resign myself to simply saying i suck with an airbrush. *shell colors needed a little more, but i couldn't figure out what's going wrong. *i wanted to push the greens. But needed more something to push the values. Yellow? White? What do you raise green with?
  2. A client of mine has commissioned me to produce a new line of oriental-themed turtle people, based on box-turtles. I'm pretty excited about this project as I love the subject as well as the challenges that it will present me. We are going to take a modular approach to this, with me creating a fully sculpted shell with arm and leg armatures. This I can then cast in bronze and use to make many different minis. I am also planning on making several heads and casting them to be added to each sculpt. A turtle head is pretty generic with little possible expression, so I should be able to make a few variations and reuse them. I will also be sculpting and casting various oriental weapons, hats, and other accouterments to be added to the sculpts. After all that, I will be making three sculpts to begin with, and we'll see where we take it from there. If it all turns out, you'll likely be seeing all of this on the KS page at some point. Here is the basic concept (this is very rough and I am not very good at drawing; the 3D sculpts will be a lot better): Here is a close up of the basic armature concept: Last night, I began the project by making the armature and underpinning the shell Here is the top view: And the side view: I will be basing the turtle parts on the Eastern Box-turtle: And finally, as I was typing this, the bronze came: Now, I am going to have to figure out how to cut that up into chunks that can fit my crucible. More to come soon. Andy
  3. Hi there, New to these boards, but my husband recommended them to me and so I want to show of my latest and finally finished work <3 Hope you like it as much as I do! Feel free to leave a comment or any tips for me to improve my painting skills ^.^ Thanks! x- Shin More pictures in the Spoiler!
  4. Since it's arrival last month, I've been experimenting with my first 3D Printer. Today marked the first finished painted projects that were made on it. Several Giants, designed by Duncan "Shadow" Louca. The Gourdlock, by dutchmogul: One of my favorite finds while randomly searching for STL files, the Dwarf Rock Star, also by dutchmogul. Completing my Frostgrave Bestiaries is an eventual goal...here's a simple crab from Rocket Pig Tortles seem to be the new hotness since their introduction in a charity event tied to "Tomb of Annihilation". These guys are a mix from Fat Dragon and the wonderful DM Workshop The last are a murder of Redcaps, again designed by DM Workshop. I swapped out their weapons to give them some variety.
  5. This is a Dragyri Warrior ( I believe) from Dark Age, he was sent to me by @malefactus a while ago to contribute to my Lost World Project. WIP: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69308-lost-world-project-glitterwolf-paints-coldblooded-creatures-and-conquistadores/&page=117 In my Lost World he is Drakh a mutant turtle warrior. He has a pet Meso, a Raptor Hatchling from Bombshell Miniatures. Base is made with a Greenstuffworld Roller Pin and some tuft/flock. Here they are, the last pictures are with my Jungle Photobackdrop Board to show them in their natural habitat. Enjoy!
  6. I decided to get this and paint it for my Mom for Christmas. Arrived like this: Airbrush Primer: Base coated dark green, realized tortoises don't have green shells so went over the shell with sequential layers of Ochre/Burnt Umber mix, followed by ochre several times. Drybrushed dark blue over the skin. Washed the shell with burnt umber, washed just the crevices with a thin black wash. Highlighted the shell with mid yellow, did some speckling of red green and blue on the head and neck. AND then we run into problems, gotta do the eyes. So I do that... And we got one ridiculous looking, Stoned of his gourd tortoise. Please help!
  7. A while ago Malefactus send me some miniatures as a gift to contribute to my Lost World Project. His friend Cpt. John saw it and decided to include this wonderful miniature. WIP here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69308-lost-world-project-xherman1964-paints-coldblooded-creatures-and-conquistadores/ EUREKA Miniatures 28mm War Turtle ( the Little ones are smaller but they fit right in). Thanks Malefactus and Cpt. John for this amazing gift! I hope I did it proud. I connected a few Tabletop Art Resin bases to create a bigger base for this monster. He is as big as a young tortoise would be in real life! I added a few resin pieces from Ristul's Market too, a centipede and a Saurus Skull, the other stuff was already sculpted on the base. Hope you like it.
  8. Painted this for a friend and feel like either I got lucky or subconsciously there is a path I am taking while painting and maybe I have an inkling of what I am doing. I love the shell portion of this sculpt and almost want another just to modify some other model with it. I also really liked the way the underside of him came out. Too bad it is hard to see. I guess I could have glued him shell down first, like something out of a cartoon. The cherub I believe I got from Dark Sword miniatures, a freebie tossed in with an old order. I felt like the Dragon was missing something...treasure. So I painted up the cherub gold and now it has some story/character to the scene. I like the way he turned out, hope you enjoy too.
  9. Created a panda-turtle hybrid eidolon with a mount that fits perfectly with a small sized base (e.g. Gnome, Halfling). Used to lug heavy items and soak up damage as the summoner peppers them with spells.
  10. It's hard to get a good picture of this guy, what with this protruding arms.
  11. So, this is actually kind of a terrain challenge for Dakka forums, but anyway I decided to do Discworld! so of course my first stop was Reaper's site, but alas I can find no minis that would work. So, can anyone suggest a Bones something I could convert maybe? or should I simply look elsewhere? I'm thinking kind of like... toys. But I hate that they're not necessarily that realistic. Anyway thanks for any help :D
  12. My merry wrecking squad for February: Inspiration: African Spurred Tortoise (I decided I wanted a little extra color, so he got green skin instead of brown.) Inspiration: Indian Star Tortoise And a shield shell is inspired by the Red Eared Slider
  13. Here's my Ironback Spitter for Hordes. http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_2.jpg http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_3.jpg http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_4.jpg http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_5.jpg http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_7.jpg http://www.terrainosaur.com/figs2/ironback_8.jpg
  14. These are two turtle warriors from the Bones II Kickstarter. I glued them to fender washers for weight and balance before painting them. The color palette is more muddy and earthy than normal for me. I wanted to make them look like alligator snapping turtles, the terror of my youth. One of them has a greener shell because that's a natural variation. The turtle shell shield is painted like an Eastern Box Turtle, an inoffensive little North American forest-dwelling turtle. WIP thread here. Spikeshell Warrior with shield and club: Spikeshell Warrior with two-handed club:
  15. These are two turtle warriors which came in the Bones II set "Swamp Things." They look like they are based on alligator snapping turtles, so I think I am going to paint them the mud-brown camouflage the critters have in real life. For the moment I have primed them with Reaper's Brown Liner, sloshed some green on their bases, and glued them to one-inch fender washers. Something interesting I discovered while gluing them: Dried epoxy peels right off of parchment paper. This could prove useful, and I think I'm going to start a thread on it in painting tips.
  16. Batch of Bones 2 jungle-themed animals on CMON Jungle bases! 77216: Panther 77371: Basilisk 77266: Slyph 77270: Spikeshells
  17. For those all too uncommon encounters along the sea, we have the dread Dragon Turtle (and the not-so-dread normal turtle I practiced the paint scheme on)
  18. This guy was fun to paint. Reminded me of Super Mario Brothers.
  19. The Tortoise Cleric, originally I had a whole story made up for his and his friend's background. In short he carries his Brother's Backshield into battle to avenge him. His Brother was slain by Ogres.
  20. I spent a lot longer than my average time on this delightful mini from Darksword, and I think it shows. I am very happy with him. His little buddy is from Wyrd Miniatures, the swamp accessories pack I think.
  21. Hi ! This is one of my last work (no reaper, sorry ... In France, the Reaper Minis have bad diffusion/distribution) :
  22. This is a repaint of a fairy statue that I got from a local gift shop. For those of you following these, I actually got it from a different shop than the other fairies I've painted. I went for a strong mood with this mini- every color on her has a sea green added to it (this was a mix of Gnarls Green and Meridius Blue). I was rather pleased with how the mini pulled together in the end. I've posted her up to CoolMini for anyone who cares to vote.
