  1. (Note: I actually started these a while back, though they are not done yet. This is a bit less of a WIP thread than a how-I-got-here-so-far thread, which I will update as I get my old pictures organized. Questions and comments and critiques are, as always, welcome.) Last summer Bad Squiddo Games hosted a brief Kickstarter, "My Last Sunrise," of an assortment of Gothic horror minis centered around vampires. These two stood out to me as a little beyond the Hammer horror ethos of most of the other figures. While I was painting them I thought of them as "Feral Vampires," although when I just rechecked they are called "Vampire Thralls." I dunno. They don't look very thrall-like to me. Their tag line in the Kickstarter was "Float about in my night dress cooing for scraps? No way. I hunt my own meal." Anyhow, they have a fun, odd, lady pirate or highwayman look. All paints used are Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics. Color mixes are (usually) noted, but not exact ratios. Questions are welcomed and I will try to answer them. Critiques are appreciated. This is a slight deviation from how I prime figures. Normally I prime them with Titanium White (which I did here) and then wash over them with Burnt Umber to bring out the details. These I wanted kind of cold-looking, so I washed them with a cold dark grey mixed from Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue. That's them on the left. For a while I was including Bad Squiddo's "Dracula" in the photos, so you get a free peek at that too. And as per usual, the first thing I did was their skin. In contrast to the skin of living humans, I have been painting vampire skin in stark black-and-white mixed from Titanium White and Carbon Black. The very first layer is thinned Titanium White, then pale shadows of the lightest grey.
  2. This is a 20 man (well, 17 with a unit filler) unit of skeletons that I'm working on for possible use in Kings of War. It's composed of figures by a lot of different manufacturers including Reaper, Ral Partha, GW, Grenadier, Mage Knight, and WOTC. I'm using all the different makers and scales to try and make an interesting looking unit composed of more than just human remains. I am an equal opportunity, non racially biased necromancer, after all. This will be kind of a slow burn project; I'm not in any major rush to finish these for a game any time soon. This will be something to work on in between other projects. There will be conversions, and different paint jobs for the skellies; again in an effort to make a more interesting looking group. Here's the unit all together: What would be more interesting; making individual show off threads as I finish 2 or 3 figures, or just putting the finished figures in here and then doing a show off for the whole unit once it's complete?
  3. These are a couple of modern undead, Reaper's 03383: Vampire Spawn sculpted by Derek Schubert. I didn't make a WIP thread for them. Question, comments, and critiques are welcome as always.
  4. For my Nippon Land of the Rising Moon Project. WIP Here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/79416-nippon-land-of-the-rising-moon-by-glitterwolf/&page=2 @Jasper_the_2nd send me a bunch of Clan Wars minis for my project at a bargain. Here is the first one. The metal on the blade looks better in real life than on the pics, it is not that harsh at the 28mm scale... Anyway, first one of the Undead Toda Army is done. Hope you people like it. Likes, Comments and Bacon are welcome!
  5. One of my favourite sculpts, quite a weird creature. I love wizards. I'm happy with the color palette, the blues and greens combine just fine with the skin tone and I think I blended them nicely.
  6. One day this will be a diorama with some archaeologists. One day...
  7. For my Children of the Grave Project I'm building a Gothic style Undead army with some Demon allies. Here is the Necropolis Command Group I will use as a Command for a regiment later. WIP http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/79298-children-of-the-grave-by-glitterwolf/&

  9. 89022: Alahazra, Iconic Oracle as crew for the Grenadier Undead Rhino Captive Carrier. On the base is a Bones Mummy fighting for his unlife with an approaching snake, luckily for him the Rhino tries to crush it. 10. In the Iron Kingdoms RPG, if you want to have some ancient ruins/dungeons for the PCs to explore, your go-to ancient boogeymen tend to be the wicked "Orgoth" -- an ancient culture that was in some ways a sort of mish-mash of the bloodiest aspects of the Vikings and the Aztecs, who invaded the continent of Western Immoren from some mysterious fog-shrouded continent across the sea, employing necromancy and other dark arts to crush the local populace, but were eventually driven out when a convergence of events weakened them, and the locals finally rallied. So, crazy catacombs that are part temple, part tomb, part torture chamber, part treasure cache, riddled with secret passages, traps, dangerously magic items, and lingering undead -- that's the Orgoth dungeon in a nutshell, complete with a big-bad insane undead warrior and his eternal court in some cobwebby throne room. Furthermore, the Orgoth employed certain magics to delay natural processes of decay and ruin -- and these magics tend to become unstable over time -- so basically I have an in-universe reason to be inconsistent with how I depict the stage of decay of any particular part of the tomb (thus allowing for skeletons still wearing robes and/or armor, for instance). The way to make it distinctive, however, is to have lots of spiky bits, and for everything to have grimacing faces (perhaps out of anger, perhaps in torment, perhaps both). That goes for the models as well. Several of the new Bones undead figures are perfect for this. Reaper 77201 "Dragoth the Defiler" is great for the leader of the undead hordes -- the sort of character that, when a PC pokes his head into a chamber and sees him, anyone who has the least bit of sense starts contemplating the wisdom of a tactical retreat. To give him a more distinctive "Orgoth" look, I used some epoxy putty to sculpt a big ugly "frowny face" in the gap at the top of the throne, and another on his chestplate. The Orgoth are known for wielding larger-than-life swords, distinctive for having glowing embossed images of swarms of faces on each side of the blade; the figure already came with a sword held in the left hand, but for some reason even though it was posed as if the undead lord was resting his hand on the grip, with the blade tip downward, the plastic sword tip didn't actually touch the throne or base. I found a pewter sword blade that I think was originally from a Heartbreaker Hobbies Nepharite of Algeroth (Warzone / Mutant Chronicles), and attached an Ogre Kingdoms gauntlet, topped with a random head/skull as an over-sized pommel. (The gauntlet is way too large, but I imagined it could be a magical artifact enchanted to help wield that "surf-sword" with one hand. The other figures are a mix of Bones figures I picked either for being obviously undead (77237 through 77245), or some evil Pathfinder warrior-types (89029, 89030, 89032). For the skeletons, I added some putty to those with shields, to give them that Orgoth grimace. 89029 "Hellknight Order of the Scourge" just looks like an evil knight, but he's got the horns, and with a little bit of putty I was able to turn the strange shield design into another frowny face. 89030 "Hellknight Order of the Nail" is perfect for Orgoth right off with his grimacing chestplate. Even so, I added another ugly face to his shield. 89031 "Whispering Tyrant" isn't shown here, but I'm turning that one into an Orgoth "Excruciator" (ghostly torturer). 89032 "Anti-Paladin" is so perfect for an Orgoth warrior that I bought some extras. Not only is there a big hideous face on the shield, but he's got horns and skulls ... and the bare face is so exaggerated in its grimace that I've just painted it up as an Orgoth "death mask." I painted up the Deathless with glowing green on the blade, and tried to do a "cast light" effect on nearby surfaces. Somehow, a lot of the details ended up turning out a lot more yellow than I'd intended; while that's probably fine for the skeletons, the bit of human (?) skin on the front (with a visible hand) was meant to be more of a leathery brown. And here are most of the stars of the Orgoth court (various skeletons off-stage in varying degrees of progress). I am thinking of making a few "courtiers" of some sort, though most skeletal types would be wielding weapons and such. I may just have to dig through the Bones pile and find some models (I have an excess of "hero/adventurer" types) and do some conversions to make them undead servants (musicians, etc.) instead.
  11. Bones 77145: Mummy Captain. Part of my Lost World Project. WIP Here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69308-lost-world-project-glitterwolf-paints-coldblooded-creatures-and-conquistadores/&page=111
  12. This is Dracula from Bad Squiddo Games' "My Last Sunrise" collection, an assortment of vampires, vampire hunters, and a few auxiliaries which was released in a very brief Kickstarter last summer. Annie, the Dice Bag Lady, runs fun Kickstarters. The three vampire brides I painted last month are from the same set. I don't have a WIP for him. Questions and comments appreciated.
  13. These are what I finished painting this year, a year that was somewhat abbreviated by world events. Really, this is what I painted in the last six months, since political dismay kept me from the miniatures table for approximately eight months after the last US Presidential election. This year I painted my first Reaper Warlord figures who were also my first oversized werewolves, 77754 the Rageclaw Slayer, and 77755, Aislinn, Shadow Tracker. Nearly everything I painted was for the White Wolf World of Darkness and Exalted. 14. Hi everyone, I need your help. I feel as if I am at a bit of an impasse. I am currently painting an armed force of ancient skeletons. The primary reasons for taking this project was to practice my OSL on the eyes, and trying my hand at verdigris for the first time. I love how both the skeletons and the ancient metal are coming out. However, I feel as if there is not enough contrast on the models, and when viewing them from tabletop distance, they look too... homogeneous. Do they look "boring" to anyone else? Does anyone else have a suggestion for how to fix them?
  15. These are the "Vampire Brides" from Bad Squiddo Games, which last summer came out with a line of Hammer-type horror figures called "My Last Sunrise." They are sculpted by Gus Kearns and were introduced with the tag line "Get married, they said. Best day of your life, they said." WIP thread here.
  16. A note: I use Golden Matte Fluid Acrylics and mix my own colors. All color references are to what I have mixed and sometimes how. Last summer Bad Squiddo Games had an eyeblink of a Kickstarter (I think it might have been one week) for a line of Gothic horror minis, called "My Last Sunrise". Annie the Dice Bag Lady specializes in realistic non-objectified female minis from manufacturers worldwide and has a pretty good sense of humor about it. These are three vampire brides from the assortment. They have a classic Hammer horror look to them. They were introduced in the Kickstarter as "Get married, they said. Best day of your life, they said." Anyhow, I figured I would paint them up. As ever (though I don't think I have mentioned it lately), comments and critiques are most appreciated. I'm always learning and glad to hear other perspectives. Normally I prime my minis white and wash them with Burnt Umber, a rich, dark brown. But I wanted these to look more chilly so I washed them with a cold grey mixed from Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna. It does not enhance the details as much as the darker Umber. Ultramarine Blue tends to dry with a grainy texture in thin washes. In passing, I note that this looks like a pretty good crystalline rock texture and would be a fairly fast method for painting statues. C&C welcome!
  17. The skeletal horse bases are old GW Tomb Kings models I got off eBay. The human skellie bits are Bones models -- Ichabarr is the headless one, obviously; he was originally a Bones archer skeleton. The bases are original, but I slathered them with Vallejo Thick Mud and covered them with birch seed covers for the leaves of the forest. Overall, I am pleased!
  18. Well over Minivember I had high hopes of great accomplishments. For me that entailed finishing more than one mini, 30 hopefully. Well, I failed to achieve that. I did however manage to start and finish another Zombicide mini (more actually, but they will be in another post). He was a relatively quick paint for me, and with the idea of table top. I gave the Tamiya Clear Red a try for the blood effects. I like the effect just not execution. Well with out furthur fanfare or words and such, is my Zombicide Abomination. Thanks for any C&C you feel inspired to give.
  19. Here is my collection of Zombicide Black Plague Notoriusly Plagued Character volume 1 I've been working on for the past few months. I now am a bit sadened that I didn't get in on the NPC's 2 as well in the KS. I did go with anything to fancy. In fact, I went straight off the artwork. I left off the blood and gore as well, though now that I got some of the Tamiya Clear Red I think I might slowly begin to bloody these up. Lets start with a group shot of the lot. Now a tease with the frisky one of the bunch. Don't get to excited she can be found chaperoned with this rather dour lady. Next up we have a traveler to these parts, who is quite eager to meet you. His traveling companion is a more on the grim side and keeps his enthusiasm in check. Lastly we have a gentlemen that is rather irate that his current return customers. Ah well, there is no pleasing some people Thanks for any C&C you feel inclined to give.
  20. Well after watching @Rahz paint up some of his Black Plague Abominations, I decided I wanted to get started on mine. So I though I'd gather up a WIP of my Journey through all the Zombicide Abominations. Modern: Season 1, Toxic CIty Black Plague: Core (x2), Wolfsburg (x2),Rat, Alpha, Troll, Blob, and Minotaur I decided to start with the Core BP set Abominations. I also wanted to try out my scale 75 F&G Unnatural Skin set. So here is where I begun.
  21. Okay so I dug around in the drawer and pulled out six unpainted bones that I got in my batch that I bought. I gave them all a thorough scrub with a brush and warm soapy water and a toothbrush. The ogre needed straightening up so I poured hot water over to readjust and then under cold to set. I attached all six using superglue to fender washer bases. I got this tip on you tube and have been sticking to it since I started this process. They are running out so I will look for an alternative afterwards. But these are good and solid and make a good base. So now I have to decide which figure to work on.... I have not primed any and up until now I have primed using "151" matt black spray paint. I did not know exactly what to use so I tried this when I began. I did pick up slightly after the photo and start to apply some blue to the Anhurian soldier using the same blue I mixed for a figure I was painting late last night. But without primer it did not seem to want to settle very well. The two figures I have seen painted are by Doctor Faust ; the hell hound and the ogre. Any comments/suggestions or generally helpful advice is gratefully welcomed.
  22. Whoop WHOOP, first part of the big commission done. They look pretty nice lined up like this I think the customer is gonna be happy!
  23. I am trying to break out of my lurker mode and post more. I have many excuses for my silence the last few months, one of which is my lack of a good photo set up. So I decided to just take crummy phone photos with the scant natural light angling in the windows across the room. I actually like the results. Especially since you can't see a lot of my poor painting as well. approaching the the hill from the pumpkin patch... Some surprises pop out if the ground. door is open but no one is home. . . Maybe check the other side of the fence BOO
  24. Finished the last of the Yellow Sign faction, got a group pic that I'm gonna upload later but these are the final wave! WIP thread:
  25. Hello fine people (and other assorted things) of the Reaper forum! Continuing in our project of teaming up to show you two different methods to go about painting the same miniature, Buglips and I decided that we would do a WIP thread for Con Crud, Convention Zombie from the 2017 Reapercon swag bag! He's a great little figure, sculpted by Gene Van Horne, that we thought we could have some fun with. This will be our second shared WIP thread in this series of ours, in case you missed it, check out our first one where we painted Thanis the Bonecaller: As with that one, I will be covering my usual method of painting for display, and Buglips will be approaching the figure with his own usual "fast-but-decent method." As with the last one, Buglips' method will be much faster than mine will be and you'll get to see where our two styles diverge. We will be sharing our own issues, thoughts and methods with you in the hopes that someone will find such things useful. So on to the mini! Here's my Con Crud, fresh out of his blister: I prepped him in my usual way, with some diamond files to grind off the mold lines and bit of flash that you can see on his outstretched foot and hand. He has some notable mold lines through his hair and back and down the left (his left) side of his face. I'll show you throughout the process how I'll tackle those. So here he is after I primed him with Reaper's Brush-On Primer in white, thinned down with some water. As usual, I only did one thin coat so as not to obscure the details on him and I took a couple of additional shots from different angles so you can see some of the mold lines that I'll need to work on a little more down the road.
