  1. To change from fantasy, I wanted to do a quick paint of a Chronoscope mini in Bones. According to the store, it is "Frank Buck, Adventurer". I like the sculpt and its likeness to a very famous archaeologist / adventurer in the movies. My goal was a quick & simple paint job and nothing fancy for the base. The problem was that the mini was badly bent at the ankles making it lean forward a lot and no boiling/cooling was able to fix it. So, I still had to re-base it, and got a bit carried away in the re-basing process which yield to this mini vignette: "Heading into the Jungle" The tree and base texture was made with Scupley and lichen. The car is a Tamiya model kit of a Russian field car.
  2. That frog is finished.. finally...going to take some rest from scene set doing some more simple figure and base before go into my next one ( already have an idea with Reaper bones figure this time :D ) My WIP for this project here : http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/81457-darksword-frog-hunter/
  3. Having a hard time getting started back up on my keeper's sanctum diorama... I think I need to purposely take a break from it and work on some other stuff to get my creative juices flowing again. I have this idea in my head for a 75mm diorama featuring black sun miniatures' "Barbarian and the Lost Princess" (Conan) vs SC75's "Brock the Wanderer" I'm thinking in this piece that it will have Conan carrying the princess through a dungeon type setting and then Brock standing there in front of a doorway. I'm going to really pull from artwork that I admire in regards to barbarians such as Frazetta and Patrick J. Jones. Right now I'm cleaning off the flash and mold lines, as soon as I do that, I'll wash everything and start to assemble as much as I can without causing issues during painting. Mood and color scheme inspiration pic from Patrick J. Jones -
  4. ...and finishing it in 10 days or less. And you're all invited to come along for the ride. Audience participation is welcome and encouraged, just don't throw anything, please. (Unless it's money) While on the hangouts last night, I had an idea for a new project, and then started to laugh. When asked what was so funny, I said that I had just thought of a cool idea for a vignette for Reapercon, but it was too bad it's only a little over a week away. Some of the helpful folks there encouraged me to 'go for it'. I laughed. But I started thinking about it. Then I really started to think about it; I got out some stuff, and made a crude mock-up sketch. Then I thought about it some more. ....and now I think I'm going to do it. It's not like all of my other projects are already finished, right? Oh wait.... So, when I hobby, I usually have a couple different things going at one time, so that I can work on something else while i'm waiting for paint/glue/putty/whatever to dry. I was converting this fellow: http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Bones/latest/77408 when the idea hit me. So, what I'm thinking is a scene where the evil spell caster is summoning up some unholy thing from the pit for some evil shenanigans. Mock up: The big scary monster is not what I'm going to use; it's just a place holder. The summoning portal will be in the ground. What I'm thinking for the monster is that less is more; just an arm and top of the head, or some tentacles or something just starting to rise up out of the portal. What do you think? Also, here's the guy I converted: Since he was the chap that inspired this idea, I was going to use him as the star, (and I still might), but I was wondering if the calm pose works alright ( I imagine all the chanting, bloodletting and so on has concluded and he's just waiting for his minion to come forth ), or if a more action-y pose (arms spread, holding a staff/sword/something over the head, something like that) would be better. Well, what do you think?
  5. Magically Distracted She sat on her favorite stool, having gotten mostly undressed and relaxed, gently swirling the goblet of red wine in her hand as she read through the grimore in her lap... closing her eyes she gently concentrated on the spell that was before her... suddenly the books piled around her lifted up in the air as if they had minds of their own and were caught in a small windstorm. She giggled to herself and took another long drink of the wine from her goblet and continued to study... --------------------- This was a really fun project that I started up in April of this year. My goal was to get her done in time for the 'eavier metal online contest (Facebook) and see if I could place or perhaps get a random draw. I ended up uploading her about 10 minutes late, so I have no idea at the time of doing this post if she will be considered in the contest or if she will be disqualified. Either way, I had fun, I had tons of amazing feedback during the WIP and a lot of people cheering me on to get it finished. I present to you "Magically Distracted" a NSFW Kingdom Death figure in the 54mm scale, she is a limited edition resin release. Please feel free to give your comments and critiques. I'm going to check and see if I am allowed to bring a nude figure to ReaperCon this year for entry into their painters contest or not. If not, she'll stay home as I do have plenty of other things to enter as well. A few firsts on this one, I did some elaborate tattoos, magical floating books, writing in books in freehand, a completely nude figure, texturing pattern, Venus dimples, and last but not least sheer stockings (which were a lot of fun and a lot of work!). First - pics that are SFW and then I'll post some NSFW links (special thanks to @Thrym for hooking me up with his site for hosting as Facebook links expire) and for helping me out with the really cool title placard). NSFW Links One Two Three Four Five ETA: Better pics after a bit of clean-up to the OSL and added red ink to the drink.
  6. Okay, this is a WIP of the making of the vignette, not the entire paint process. This is my first post here, so bear with me if I have to modify stuff. If the descriptions come out by the right photos the first time, I'll be pleasantly surprised :-) The post is going to be photo heavy, so I reduced the size of all of them. Hopefully it won't be too bloated. #1 The 99% mostly finished unicorn. -- EDIT -- grabbed the wrong photo, this one also lacks the mane & tail highlighting. If I add the corrected photo it will screw up the order. Whoops :-) #2 I "built" this tree using things from the yard. I couldn't find one exactly the way I wanted, so I cut and glued in pieces until I had what I wanted. #3 A spray primered piece of floor tile for the base, with a framework for the hill I wanted. The hill bit is the cardboard from the middle of one of those drink carrier things, Gorilla glued onto the base. I used Gorilla glue rather than one of the other kinds for enhanced sturdiness throughout. #4 I didn't want too much green or too much brown for my ground cover, so I mixed some static grass with old coffee grounds. #5 Putty time! #6 The oil slick, aka black primer so I'd have a steady color under my grass. #7 Some steps along the way getting my ground cover in. #8 I covered up the unicorn because for the last step I wanted an extremely light dusting representing the first snow of the year, but I didn't want any on him. *** edit *** Have to do a second post with the finished product, ran out of allowable photos. Also I didn't get the steps above each photo, but I think ya'll can figure it out.
  7. A little while ago I purchased Hasslefree's "Fairies Wear Boots" piece. The Gothic Punk like Fairy stomps on candy. Now I kept thinking that it would be fun to have her chasing little Imps and stomp those into the ground. So I got me some little familairs and stuff from Reaper. Then Malefacus ( Al) send me a wonderful Mushroom he sculpted. To top things off, Knarthex ( George) send me some stuff including a nice oval wooden plinth. Thinking about it all, I realised I now have the ingredients to start on this piece. The Idea is the Fairy chases Imps and Stomps a few into the ground. Maybe she swallowed a growth potion or something. Now she can finally have her revenge on those pesky Imps! The Mushroom watches the whole scene in horror. I will not use all these Imps/Demons, but I will take my pick which will suit the scene best. To complement the large Shroom, I will include some smaller resin mushrooms. Painting will follow later, but here are the ingredients:
  8. I have painted up the Nativity Set as a gift for my girlfriend's parents. They will get it close to the holidays. I added the sheperd with sheep, the donkey and a cow. All Reaper miniatures: https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01430 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01433 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/nativity/latest/01439 https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/cow/sku-down/03719 I put the whole set under a dome. And made some barn soil with putty. WIP here: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/69198-nativity-scene-as-a-gift-by-xherman1964/ Only after all was glued together I noticed a small bit of yellow brown on the sheperd's clothing, oh well, let's assume he got a bit dirty dealing with the animals... I hope they will like the gift..
  9. I started this as a Halloween project. Things got in the way and now it is an autumn piece. Any way I had fun. I bought a ceramic Pumpkin, converted it into a house. Reaper's Elise Witch http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/elise/latest/02869And Freebooter's Chaos Witch both sculpted by Werner Klocke are conjuring pumpkins. These are now wandering off into the world to cause mayhem, The pumpkins are part Ristul's Market and I used the Owl on a Pumpkin from the Reaper Halloween Familiars http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/Special%20Edition%20Figures/sku-down/01548 And I added the great Halloween Tree from Reaper: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/halloween/sku-down/03692 Hope you like it. Some Pumpkins are a bit in the ground, so they are emerging.
  10. I'll call this one done as well, though I may touch up a few areas. I love this sculpt. It's so full of life and happiness. I just had to rain on the parade... I added some faint OSL from the spirit on the surroundings. At the last minute I decided to go ahead and use the flower. My WIP is here. Enjoy! C&C always welcome! See y'all at Reapercon!!!
  11. Hey everyone, Here are some more photo's from the WIP The only thing missing is a wooden round sockel I ordered, but that will take another week at least before it will be back in stock and then shipped. She was a valentine gift for my girlfriend and she really loves her. Hope you all do too! Linked for nudity and made new photos http://myalbum.com/photo/opvqdNChQn9X/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/xzR4iBRwKGHV/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/rmSFJTGPv126/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/b3kVyjHfabHC/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/fupjpk9bHxoH/1k0.jpg Any C&C is as always very welcome!
  12. Hey everyone, This is a work in progress for a finished piece. I finished her yesterday but couldn't post the work in progress, because it was a valentine gift for my girlfriend and she sometimes roams the forums too. She picked this model a while back when I was ordering and told me right from the start she wanted something golden green. I painted the dryad gold green and was my first real blending on a miniature that small. It turned out pretty well although my shaking hands still bother my painting skills at times. I mixed the green gold with VMC golden olive, VGC yellow olive, VGC glorious gold, VGC polished gold, some glaze medium and water. I started with the yellow olive and glorious gold and mixed in a tiny bit of golden olive for each succesive layer. The last few layer I used the polished gold instead of the glorious gold. http://myalbum.com/photo/1phxrsBjHpuj_RuEoEm/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/Vv8pv02XrOL6/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/tmHEN1RjJgLG/1k0.jpg For the tree I used VGC charred brown, VMC flat brown and VMC flat earth for the highlights. I used the same colors on the sculpted tree. Her hair was basecoated VGC royal purple, followed by VGC hexed lichen and last VGC warlord purple. same three colors were used for the fingernails and lips. The tree was made with some twisted floristwire and greenstuff. The base was made with supersculpey and when baked painted with a few different browns and some sand colors for the creek bed.. Once dry I first glued on some very fine sand, the white/silver kind used for birdcages. I glued in some small stones and when everything was dry i drybrushed teh stones and painted the sand in the creek bed. Then I glued on a mix of lots of different kinds flock and static grass and some noch foliage leaves too. I have a lot of different lengths of static grass and made some reed/grass bundles by putting some woodglue on my fingertips and rolling a tiny bit of the different lengths of static grass between my fingers. I drilled small holes in teh base and glued the bundles in place. When everything was dry I used thinned woodglue to seal between the creekbed and the plastic rim I made from a plastic juicebottle to get ready for pooring the Vallejo still water.. That stuff sucks bad.. But it was all I had at the time so I went with it. It is horrible stuff, its pretty easy to use, but when it dries it shrinks and it shrinks bad.. About 20% is my guess, so when dry you get this concave watermass.. I poored 3 layers total to get it sort of level. In the end it looks fine but it is a lot of extra work. As a final touch I used some Aquatec Gloss gel to create some small waves on the surface and painted the crests with a bit of diluted white. http://myalbum.com/photo/FIpEgWcln3DB/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/BerM7bo5FjKs/1k0.jpg http://myalbum.com/photo/gkf2urEjISXw/1k0.jpg For the pink flowerplants I used some small plastic rods dipped in superglue gel and sprinkled some 1mm static grass on it, once dry I painted them pink. The orange plant/flower I made from some green cardboard and the orange cone was a mishap from the grass bundles I made earlier. I painted it orange and glued it on the base. When that was dry I glued the leaves around it. the trees both got some vines made from green stuff and on the dryad tree I glued some mininatur ivy leaves, also a few in her hair. On the base as a final touch I glued some birch seed leaves. http://myalbum.com/photo/AelHWIaeU9bE/1k0.jpg Hope you all like her as much as my girlfriend did, she was very happy with the finished piece Any C&C is as always much appreciated
  13. Hi everyone, My painting isn't going so well unfortunately, because of shaking hands from the side effects from my new anti-epilepsy meds. So i spend the past week building a base for my Clay Golem and just finished it. Built out of blue foam, some milliput and creativity Hope you all like it! Any C&C is, as always, much appreciated!!
  14. For the Secret Sophie Exchange, my partner this year was Corporea. She asked for something fun and colorful (specifically blue, purple, and green). So it took me a while to come up with this idea, but one night in bed while I was mulling it over, the idea struck me that I'd use the surfer dude I had and the coral mermaid I had on hand. With him on a beach and her on a sandbar, a modern meets fantasy type of scene. I purposely left the figures shiny as they were (or are) in the water. Used iridescent medium on the mermaid's scales to give them a glittering/shimmering look. All the marine life is sculpted by me except for the turtle, which was sculpted by Mad Jack and I took from the box of goodwill to paint up like a sea turtle. Anyhow without further ado... I present the SFW pics of this piece with links to NSFW pics (since the mermaid is topless). Figures: Surfer Dude - Reaper SKU # 50099 Coral Mermaid - Reaper SKU # 03554 C&C are welcomed and appreciated! NSFW Pics - [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image] [image]
  15. I started building a display piece, a vignette, diorama or whatever you want to call it. It will probably be too late for Halloween but then it will be a Fall / Autumn piece. Reaper 02869: Elise, The Witch and Freebooter Chaos Witch,, both by Werner Klocke will star the show. The idea is they live in this Pumpkin house ( obtained in a garden centre, added a plastic door from a board game) and they are conjuring spooky pumpkins. The Halloween tree stands next to their house. So here are the first pics.
  16. I came back from a dark place in April with the help of my family, and one of the things that kept me going then, and now, is sitting down with little lead people and some paint every evening.... Now I didn't start on the forums until the last day of June, but in April, May, and June, I painted over 50 minis, mostly Reaper. (That bit of Figmentius in me kept me from needing to buy much....) The Reaper ones are In the Inspiration Gallery, because I knew about that.... The pics will be marked Old Work in the titles, and were done with GW paints, because that was what was here, as well as a few decent brushes. No wet palette though... Since Old Guard Posted an older work I decided to do the same with some of my older stuff from this time.... (Shut up and post MY PICTURES! No one wants to hear your biography!) So I give you Dragoth, the Defiler! Some close ups: The extra base is from a Grenadier Dragon Lords set called 'Encounter at Khomar-Lolth' that had a similar figure that went where Draggy is. The red liquid in the 2 'braziers' is water effect with some GW Blood Red mixed in. So thanks for looking! 8) George Edit- See, even the undead are talking to me....
  17. So the mailman just brought this AWESOME piece to my door. This is the summer exchange that Ub3r_N3rd did for me. I think it's absolutely incredible; if you're involved with the 'Randomness' threads at all, there's a lot of Easter eggs in this piece for you to find. Ub3r did a really great job with this, I'm kind of at a loss for words to describe my happiness. Anyway, enough of my gushing, here's the pics: Ub3r_N3rd will be along shortly to add some more pics or link to the ones he took during the building/painting process, check back, I'm sure they'll be better than mine. Thanks again, Ub3r_N3rd.
  18. PROJECT...Fantasy vignette...titled (You Can't Get Me Gold)! This is a small fantasy vignette (6" x 6")...scratch built for another site and is my interpretation of the given title (Giant Flora & Fungi) containing a monster plant! Any and all comments and feedback will be greatly appreciated! Paul (Catdancer)
  19. Hello all! To you I present this fine sculpt by Tre Manor, going by name of Dilean Softstep but used as a base for ub3r_n3rd's elf character. Mod job to make it similar to ub3r's description included cutting out the blades and crafting plasticard "kukris" curved blades; sculpting an eye-patch and horsetail. Paintjob is an attempt at the brushes by yours truly, trying to keep to the topic of a nature rogue... on a roof. Since the mini was intended for play, I designed a small diorama-vignette where the actual 25mm square base could be placed, with the intention of making it non-obvious while in place. Base is carved foam, cardboard and some bits of wood. Hanging bat is leftover putty; hook is small wire bended and glued, rope is actual cotton thread. I tried to do a design that was a slice of reality, and thought the "open" chimney space was a cool idea... in retrospective, I don't think it works as intended. As always, many things did not go according to plan or desire, but I am still happy of the outcome and how much I learnt from the piece. In the end, I hope it is displayed proudly by ub3r as a token of friendship, and that this rogue rolls true in his Pathfinder games! C&C welcomed, as usual! Now for some cell phone photos taken before the trip from Argentina to the USA... Closeup of the arm tattoo: Detached mini: Base without the mini: Mini secured for travel:
  20. I'm still slogging through my painting slump However I did manage to finish the last of my Hasslefree Juveniles. These are small figures with the largest standing at 20mm and the smaller at 18mm. The lines of the sculpts are clean and the details crisp making them easy to paint even at the smaller scale. I carved the concrete blocks and the brick wall from Sculpey. I chose to use the green to unify them as a group. Also I wanted a "gritty" environment for them so I carved out a gully in the plinth in order to add debris. Thank you for looking.
  21. To stay within the new Forum rules/guidelines for WIP threads, I'm starting this one up for a vignette I'm working on as part of a RBG contest sponsored by Tre Manor on another forum. These are made from "troll cast" which is a resin-like material as far as I understand it, both detailed extremely well, but the material is very very brittle. I've broken 2 ankles so far, so I'm being extremely careful with them. Anyhow, here we go with the Unarmored Hordesman and the Armored Hordesman! At this point, I decided I wanted the Unarmored to have African American skin tones, so I did a bit of research, used the Reaper power palette and went ahead with these 5 colors. So far he's gotten the base of Ruddy Leather and then I went over it a few times with a mix of 1:1 Ruddy Leather and Intense Brown. More pics as I do more updates. C&C are welcomed and appreciated, thanks for looking!
  22. 30002 54mm Belladonna Sculpted by James Van Schaik Normally I do not do W.I.P.'s as my life is so hectic and keeping up with one is a bit of a strain for me. However this is my first attempt at a 54mm and I would like some help from my fellow painters. The only thing I'm trying to accomplish with her is nice, tidy brushwork, highlights in all the right places, depth of colour and separation between areas. Nothing fancy. She also has a large base and backdrop. I'm working on that now. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for looking.
  23. For the last couple of months I've been painting more seriously and using subdued palettes. Which is all good and well as I feel I am growing as a painter. But every now and again I think it's a good idea to paint just for the joy of it. I did use a limited palette, unfortunately I limited that palette to a bright glowy green. So in that spirit I painted up this 18mm bot from Counterblast sculpted by Patrick Keith and a flying saucer from Hydra sculpted by Steve Meli. Hope this gave you all a bit of a laugh as life is far too serious and we're all gonna die someday. Thank you for looking.
  24. I was asked to do up some minis for a wedding gift. That is to say, someone else will be giving them as a gift at a wedding. I suppose technically this is my first paid commission. The minis are the soon-to-be-wed couples' D&D characters. They've never had proper minis for their game before, and aren't expecting these. There were a couple of requests. Firstly, the gift-giver did not like Lysette's sword. This was replaced by a spell effect, which felt a little rushed, but does the job and inspired one of the vignette ideas. Also, the barbarian, though illiterate, keeps a journal, hoping that eventually it might help him learn to read and write. He just scribbles in a book. It was asked that I include he book. Lysette: (I'm not sure what's going on with her hair. It's got 4 rather distinct layers, which show up quite well in person.) Barbarian: I've also constructed 2 large bases for display when thi minis aren't in use. The first is called "Burnin' Love", and the idea is that the Lysette character has burnt a heart into the cliff side in front of them. The larger "I've Got a Bad Feeling About This" features skeletons emerging from the swamp to attack our intrepid adventurers: Thanks for looking! Edit to add: Yes, the minis are a little on the shiny side. I've hit them with the dullcote 3 times now, and this is apparently the best I'm going to get. Unfortunate, but they ARE gaming minis first, so they did need that first coat of gloss.
  25. The Old Dwarf rubbed his back as he trudged deeper into the dark wood. He had not ventured this deep since he was but a lad, but game had been scarce, and winter was coming. His loyal companion Topaz yelped and started off deeper into the wood. What would they find? Hope you all like this little vignette I've been working on since uh, February I think? I had finished the dwarf and most of the diorama base then, but I was waiting on a suitable hunting dog and I was searching for a good solution for a big tree to put on the mound of earth. I settled on the dog from the companions of the Stonehaven elves kickstarter, and then just bit the bullet, bought some sculpey and tried my hand at sculpting a tree. I think that it came out pretty well for a first try! I obviously still have to clean up the wood base, but I finished everything besides that this evening and wanted to share it with yinz guys and gals. Sadly, my camera is only an iphone from my job, so they're not the best photos. But maybe the Old Dwarf will find a camera for me around the Winter Solstice.
