Time for the next in line for Bones I. Aina, Female Valkyrie. I will paint the metal version concurrently. I already pinned the weapon hand on the metal version, and pinned the arm for the shield. I’ll apply the shield later. The Bones version still has a ton of detail, so I suspect these will take a while. Planning Red/Gold for metal version (her shield is a little Romanesque), and Blue/White for the Bones version.

Hi all. Another entry in my winter-themed minis. This guy was intended to serve as the BBEG in my Frostrun campaign. Kriger was the descendant of a greedy half-giant king who's line had been cursed to undeath. Kriger sought to lead an army of Draugr and vikings to reclaim his family throne. This "chaos warrior" model from Bones 4 was perfect. More Below the Spoiler: I really like how this guy turned out. He was one of those minis where I really pushed myself and tried some different things. I think it shows. Hopefully I'll get to continue his story, and return to my Frostrun game. Today I wanted to show off some cheap 54mm Vikings that I painted up as Frost Giants. I made these guys close to a year ago, and they were among some of the first larger sized minis I had worked on, so they're a little rough, and that's before looking at the quality of model, but if someone else is in need of a lot of giants like I was, then this might be useful to them! So these guys are from Tehnolog, a Russian miniatures company that I know very little about. The minis are made out of a soft plastic like novelty toys you can buy with tickets at an arcade. They also have abysmal detail. They're meant for 54mm wargaming, and I believe there's an intended game system that accompanies the line, but my goal was to get some cheap giants for D&D. They fit nicely on a 2in base, and could probably fit in with the smaller Reaper Bones giants, but they're definitely a little undersized. I remedied this by giving them each a boosted base, with the leader getting two layers. At a glance, they tower over a standard medium sized mini. The details were rough and there were some ugly mold lines here and there. But they're serviceable. They might work better as a half-giant if you want to use 5e's Huge Frost Giants. I am still considering getting one of their other lines to convert into cheap-o Fire Giants. What's your favorite obscure miniature substitute?

I don't actually have a "Shelf of Shame" of half-finished miniatures like some painters do, but if I did, this figure could have been on it. I sculpted Ulf Gormundr for Reaper's licensed Pathfinder line in late 2012. Ulf is a character in the "Jade Regent" Adventure Path. Although I have painted almost every one of the figures I've sculpted, I neglected to paint Ulf and a few others, mostly from 2012-2014. Probably it was because Martin Jones was working as Reaper's staff painter and giving them good paint jobs for the gallery as soon as each figure was released. Several years ago, I prepped this metal casting of Ulf but then put it aside. I removed the moldlines, patched a little pit in the handaxe, clipped away and bent the wolf-pelt leg (which is attached to pommel of the sword in the original casting) to make the overall pose a little more dynamic, and twisted his sword slightly out-of-plane for the same reason. Despite the sheltering-in-place over the past eight weeks, I haven't painted or sculpted much (er... anything). My painting area had gotten even dustier than usual. I resolved to paint something this week. I poked around my painting area, found the prepped-but-unpainted Ulf, and spent a few late-night sessions painting him. The color scheme is the "official" one -- from the portrait by Wayne Reynolds on the cover of Adventure Path #51, plus the shield design by another artist in the interior of AP #50 (I don't know who, but there are several artists listed in the credits and I could rule out a few; does anyone out there know?). The figure has some complicated layering of clothing and armor and gear (but I actually simplified Wayne Reynolds's design a bit for the miniature). I made it even more fiddly with freehand textures. For the base, I glued the figure to a plastic base, sculpted a layer of putty over the top (including his last footprint behind him), painted it blue and white to look like snow, and glued on a "Winter Tuft" grass product. I cut the smallest tuft into 3 sub-tufts because I didn't want to hide his legs behind a big clump of grass, especially in the front view. Enjoy! Derek

Hi all This is my first time posting on here. I recently returned to the hobby following a 10 year hiatus, and this is the fourth miniature I have painted since returning. I'd really love some feedback or constructive criticism as I seek to improve. The miniature is 'Lars Ragnarson, Viking', the base was scratch build using plaster of paris and sculptamold and the eagle is from Reapers 'Wizards Familiars pack VIII'. I wanted to give a snowy mountain peak feel.

All buildings will be individually featured below. Small viking house Small viking house This small house will be used most likely by the less wealthy viking in the village. Normal viking house Viking house This viking house is a bit more luxurious compared to the small building, however it does not offer enough room for a whole family to live in. Viking blacksmith building Viking blacksmith The viking blacksmith has some more unique features to it, especially the boat-shaped overhang is something that makes this building stand out from the crowd. Viking small countryhouse Small viking countryhouse What makes the country buildings unique compared to the other buildings is that their roofs extend further towards the ground. This makes it possible for vines to creep up on them, which happened to this building. Viking large country-house viking large countryhouse This country-house is made with more 'natural' material as you can tell from the logs that still have most of their branches connected to them. This buildings offers space for a whole family and includes a fireplace inside. Viking townhall/longhall Viking Townhall/Longhall Last but definitely not least, the largest building of the village, the viking townhall/longhall. This building is a staggering 45 centimeters wide and offers enough space for your whole village to feast!

I seem to have rather alot of (20 or so) unpainted Bones left from the three first massive kickstarter campaigns, and a shipment with the bits from the fourth KS picked and packed and underweigh in a container bound for Europe as I write this. Which means that there will soonish be more Bones. Oh yes there will. So, in an extremely ineffectual attempt to at least get a little more of the backlog painted up before the B4 arrives, I picked a few minis at semi-random from the Drawers of Doom™ where I keep most of the prepped minis these days. (There are several (many!) drawers, and all of them are mostly packed with minis ready to be painted. I open a drawer, have a quick look at the contents and grab a mini or two. Then I close the drawers quickly. This chosen one gets the paint. This is the only way I am able to overcome the paralysis-of-choice that invariably descends if I spend to long looking at all the lovely minis.) It really does not help that my spending on minis both KS and otherwise has been a bit...shall we call it frivolous... the last few months, so I tend to be stockpiling more than I paint. Even though I have averaged 365+ painted minis each year these last several years, the mountains of the unpainted keep growing. But I digress. Been painting Blood Rage again, for a friend, and thought I'd post the pics of what I got so far for the big guys. Most of the shading and detail work done, planning on making the skin less glossy by finish and still need to base. Any C&C welcome. P.S. "Frost giant says pls no I'm not ready."

I love this figure. Not so much the bendy weapons, but I straightened them out. They have bent back a little (Sword). I did a WIP on him. Thanks for the encouragement along the way. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/80720-kord-the-destroyer-bones/ He is another for our Reign of Winter Adventure Path. My DM said "Vikings." Kord has that vibe for sure. I tried to paint the base like grass. The hardest part was the nmm on the axe, and trying to get the runes to show up on the sword. It's a very irregular axe shape, so it was tough to figure out how to do it. My green stuff patch job on the wolf pelt was not the greatest, but it is decent enough camouflage. The second-hardest part of the figure to me was figuring out what parts of the pelt were what. What is tail? What are legs? I did my best. Overall, I'm pleased with him. He seems like such a bad-a$$. As for the pics, iPhone seems to be good for far away, but really "blobby" for up close. Maybe it is suffering from zoom. C&C Welcome.

I don’t often do WIP. I figured I’d start one. I’m still working toward Reign of Winter Adventure Path appropriate models. Kord has a Viking vibe. He’s been trimmed, washed, brown-liner primered. I removed the glued on piece of his wolf pelt to get at other stuff. I’ll glue it on later, then green stuff and finish painting. I’m blocking in basecoats now. Skin and furs so far.

Ok , time to put that things in the show off section. Did not really know what to do with naming so I though that would be funny name haha, now up to you to decide which is what :D here last pic, did not find something suitable enough to add some exterior background so I just keep it simple here. Each project is a learning experience :D ..one thing I won't do again is actually to start fight on 2 fronts, doing the scene while also doing the figure paint is a bit time consuming and make harder to focus. Since it's a reaper Diorama , I will add it to the yearly contest as well :D..

This is my take on "Viking Girl". It was a pleasure to paint, it's a really nice sculpt. I was experimenting with orange, a colour I don't use often.

Hi everyone. Here is a mini I have been working on for several weeks. Lately, I am lucky to be able to paint a little every day. Unfortunately, it is only for 5-15 minutes at a time. This figure is part of my growing batch of options for my GM running us through the Pathfinder Adventure Path, Reign of Winter. I always thought blue, white, and gold were good colors together. It is popular in many heraldic devices. I am most happy with this figure in terms of the following: The freehand wood grain of the axe, the outcome of the gold NMM on the belt buckle/hardware in front. Also, getting his eyes right in the recesses of his helmet. What I am least happy with is the runes along the white part of the tabard trim. The area is too small to work with to really get good darklining around each rune, so they are a little indistinct. Also, I tried to make each one its own independent polished gold SENMM. I don't think it turned out too well, because it's just too small an area for each piece. I tried it on the scabbard as well, which worked a little better. But, this is the most confusing part of highly polished SENMM: Do multiple pieces at different heights have their own horizon line? I painted it as if they do, but am not sure that's realistic... Also, the transition of the cow horns on his helmet is a little washed out in the photo, but also very subtle in hand. Finally, one additional comment. I have seen a lot of posts about this figure comparing it to the metal version, and bemoaning a lack of detail in the BONES version. I really tried to bring out the life of this BONES model, because I personally feel that the sculpt is great, and the translation to BONES is very good. So, without further ado, here is my version of Sigurd, Viking, BONES 77399. Please provide C&C, especially as it pertains to the issues I brought up above. Thank you.

For your consideration, I offer you the Frost Giant King from the Bones 3 Kickstarter. He is the pair to the Frost Giant Queen and I am not disappointed in the sculpt. This miniature (bigature?) is packed with details and a metric-ton of space to paint and practice textures. The level of detail for Bones miniatures continues to impress me. The King and Queen were both primed with Krylon and sealed with Dull Cote and neither exhibits tackiness. The bits that stick out - like the butt of the spear - did rub off when I handled it during painting. I really had to work my way from the inside out to paint this big guy. The fur textures on the fur cape was an enjoyable ride. I look forward to seeing what others do with this team of Giants, and I'm eyeballing the release schedule for the Frost Giant Guards. I recommend purchasing the Royalty as soon as they are available. Gratitude for all who participated in the WiP thread. Your enthusiasm kept me going. #respect #gratitude I hope you enjoy. :)

As my first finished bust this one was an adventure, some mistakes were made but lots was learned. It was commissioned by a friend as a gift for his fiancee now wife who is also a really good friend. He did not have many requirements, just a similar color scheme to Ben Komets's version. The only variation I wanted to do was the shield design but my friend was ok with changing it. I still almost went with that design but found my way to the one that I ended up using and I am so happy with it. Any feedback is most welcome! WIP thread here: Shieldmaiden Bust

Wow I feel really outclassed here but I've gotta start somewhere... Painted these for a friend's birthday, it was several months past his birthday when I finished, lol. Unfortunately before I could properly finish he had to move so I had to rush and couldn't do as much as I'd like. A lot of bases remained unpainted, and some touch ups on some of the skintones that I was planning on doing after had to be left as they were. Not sure how many I can fit before it starts flagging me as spam so I'm just gonna show a photo of all of them, and then some of the monsters. They're the ones I'm most satisfied with. Time to start a new WIP. My previous one crashed and burned fast with the featured projects being tabled for the foreseeable future. My focus now will be on ReaperCon projects, which I will be posting WIPs for soon, and this awesome bust that I call my top secret project. The Shieldmaiden bust from Nutsplanet has been one I have been interested in painting for awhile but never thought I would. Well a while back, a good friend asked if I would paint his on commission so he could gift it to his fiancée. He is also a miniature painter and planned on painting it himself but decided he wanted me to paint it instead. As his fiancée is also a good friend, I said yes. So enough chitchat, here are the first progress pictures. Shading on the skin has been blocked in and I have started blending. Not much to see at this point but any feedback would be appreciated. You are my only hope as Facebook is a no go.

I am teaching myself to paint to miniatures (via Bones III + Stoneskull + a few extras) and despite reading blogs and watching tutorial videos I feel like I am messing up some basic stuff. I started a couple of months ago trying to paint the base set from the newest bloodbowl edition*, then some incredibly difficult to pain Hero Forge custom miniatures (with the old porous and nigh impossible to paint material*). After getting a Bones III it has become my goal to learn how to paint well enough to not have a table full of unpainted figures at my gaming nights. So far major challenges have been: Human like faces (especially eyes), flesh colors, Bright colors (they look good wet but dry barely visible), recovering from accidentally coloring outside the lines, and controlling the flow of diluted paints. I have had mostly successes with: Metallics, dark solid colors, controlling the flow of very thick paint, being okay with the fact that everybody else's are going to look better then mine. The things I feel like I am doing wrong but am not sure about: how much pigment should be in a wash, ruining my brushes, using a hair-dryer because I don't want to wait in between colors/layers, not having the proper supplies. I have at my disposal: The Reaper MSP HD paint set#1 + reaper brand "new gold" + Vallejo brand: silver, bronze, red, indigo, green, blue, "dark flesh" "foundation white" medium thinner, and some blue based black. A hobby knife/clippers/emery board/cut proof pad for work-space A set of "craft brushes" that seem too large Toothpicks (for putting spots of paint) Blue Tac Included are pictures of several things I painted recently: Failures:Viking #105 & Hobgoblin Archer #236 (front & back) Success: Knight #107 & Were-O-Dile Lycanthrope #168 I can't help but feel there are some foundational steps or techniques I have completely overlooked. Please help me out by telling me if you have any tips.

Update on the Frost Giant King. Cheers to the recommendation on Bases to replace the GW base! I have a slew of baes now for my projects. Plus this base is so much better. I hope to add more embellishment like rocks to match the Queen after I get this chap sorted. So many smooth surfaces asking for textures. Leather texture after the inner cloak is done. The spear shaft wood.grain has to wait until the end as the butt of the spear continues to be worn off during painting. The sword will be a session work in-and-of itself. Enjoy!

Long time lurker, second time poster, first time upload. Here is the Frost Giant Queen from the Reaper Bones 3 Kickstarter for your consideration. I was unable to participate in the Bones 3 Kickstarter as I came upon these Bones figures late in the game. However, the participants who were able placed their unwanted miniatures up on eBay, so I took advantage of opportunity when presented. I focused on Color Theory and Texture on this piece as she provided a very large palette to paint upon. These Giants provided me practice in sketching too, which makes the entire line appealing to me. Side note: Gratitude to those who did place these minis up on eBay without jacking up the prices. I was able to purchase the both Frost Giant Royalty around cost of what Reaper will sell them at Retail. This certainly displays an ethos in the Reaper community that makes this community stand out among others. Further, having lurked for awhile: the community here is quite kind and helpful. This is a good community of miniature painters. I like the Bones miniature range. The detail on this miniature was very close to what I expect from the metal range, and I will purchase more of the Bones range in the future. I am looking forward to the resculpt of Vanya, the Fire Giant Princess, and her new size to match the Fire Giants in D&D. The attire of this miniature is akin to the Viking attire of old, and I found my SCA ventures to assist me in painting this Viking Apron and embellishments. The sculptor did an outstanding job and I look forward to more of their work. The FAQs were an asset that made my first foray into Bones an easier one. I had difficulty with flash lines until I picked up some diamond files, which handled them quite well without marring detail like my serrated files. The bent pieces were fixed with some boiling water and cold water quite easily. The pieces fit together like a glove, though I admit I still pinned them. (My OCD was tingling.) I did use Krylon as Primer, and the tackiness disappeared after the first coat of paint. She was sealed only with Krylon Dull Cote and exhibits no tackiness. She has been handled and there is no rubbing off of paint. I like how her base was round, though I am ignorant of what would be an appropriate Reaper base to place this inside of. (I currently have the King on a GW Dreadnought base, and I do not like it. If anyone reads this and has a recommendation, I surely would appreciate it.) This Bones line of miniatures has proven to me to be a Good Idea and one I will support. I am already purchasing more of the Bones 2 line for my D&D and Oldhammer alternatives, and I admit excitement at the new of Bones 4. Based on the quality of these miniatures: you will have an additional participant. Please keep up the outstanding quality and amazing work. I hope you enjoy my efforts. This is my the first miniature I've painted in over 10 years. (Edit: Dang, actually about 20 years. It feels crazy to say that!) Those who followed the WIP know that it took a while - free time is hard to come by these days, but that should hopefully be smoothing out soon. I've learned that I have a lot to learn, but I'm very happy with the way he came out. Critiques welcome! There will be a few new WIPs going up soon.

Looks like you will see the process from the middle, but i think it`s not a problem. As you can see, i have added some nice butt to her. That idea was around for some long, as i wanted to sculpt the legs for Boudicca, but decided not to do this (yeagh, if i do so, then i will finish whole series in a thousand years!) Anyway, i think that THIS WAY Lagertha is just good enough. Also, the detailed article about Tamiya putty on its way. See ya!

After many distractions and other projects, I've finally finished my set of miniatures from the "Blood Rage" board game by CMoN. I've been working on them on and off (mostly off) for over a year...the first few Giants were finished over a year ago according to my Facebook memories. Lagertha Lothbrok from the History Channel's "Vikings" is a beautiful, powerful, intelligent, and amazing character. I also saw that White Wolf Miniatures is doing a painted contest for her this month and now I'm working on the resin beauty as a change of pace and am inspired to paint my first 75mm figure!
