  1. So I returned from a month long trip in Spain this evening to find a Giant and strange box sitting on my bed. After opening it carefully, thinking it must be a bomb or decapitated head, I was overjoyed to find it was none other than my Bones Kickstarter! REJOICE! After sorting through the sheer rediculous number of miniatures, I realized that I'm going to need some sort of motivation to paint this beastly assortment of minis, and the best way to do that is to showcase my work on the internet as I try to tackle, as quickly as possible, all the Minis I got. The plan is to speed paint them up to pretty much tabletop level, a little lower than I'm used to doing with really only one base color and one layer of shading, with alot of drybrushing and washes to help me "cheat" along the way. Without further rambling, we haveeee... this guy. Model #1 of 200...ish. Mr Sandman. At first I was like "OHHHHH EVIL WIZARD!", and then I started with the purple and was like " He kinda looks like hes wearing one of those sleep caps on his head... OHHHH SLEEPY TIME WIZARD." and gave him a cute little star covered hat. Nothing is more intimidating to enemies than stars on your head. If anyone has any tips on how to take better pictures of my minis, or any comments, feel free to belittle or abuse me at your whim. Also, if anyone knows where I can find the actual names of the models so I dont have to name them all stupidly, that would be grand toooooo... okay. I'll have a new differenter picture of another mini tomorrow, with more madness.
  2. Since seeing the Bones Elementals as an add-on option, I have been plotting and planning my very own magma elemental! Whooo!!! Also since I got 2 sets, I'll probably do a traditional earth elemental to satisfy our Druid's tendency to hang around in wild shape... unless I can talk the DM into allowing a magma elemental... inspiration: Anyway- prepped figure by washing with soap and water and trimming mold lines. used sanding needles for hard to reach areas. Put on a basecoat of walnut brown (see- don't you just love walnut brown!?) and started in on some simple shading with blood red and saffron sunset. I originally intended to use carnage red but grabbed the wrong bottle. Oh well. Blood red it is! I intend to really make this guy glow. Anyone who wants to play is welcome! Elemental party time!
  3. First painting: Cut rats from sprue, washed figures to get mold release off, dried, glued to bases, and primed with Army Painter Uniform Grey: 2013-07-15 - Primed Figures - Rats and Skeletons - 0001.jpg Added basing material and washed it with black wash, painted a dark base coat of walnut brown to the shield and spear, and muddy brown to the skeleton to provide pre-shading. I plan to follow up with lightly brushed mid-tones, and a quick dry brush to highlight. Each example of skeleton and rat will be done differently to get ideas of what approach I like. 2013-07-15 - Skeletal Spearmen (77001) - 0001.jpg I am also keeping a painting journal in MS OneNote, and am will get a pad of some kind to dab examples of mixed colors. So far, the only brushes used have been a Citadel base coat brush, which can't hold a point to save it's life, and a cheap craft brush for the wash. I used a metal modeling tool for the PVA glue, and Testors Superglue with the needle applicator to glue the broccoli bases to the round bases. Oh... and my painting station:
  4. Orcs! Gotta love orcs. While I didn't actually order the Orcocalypse add-on, we all get at least one copy of each orc in the Vampire package, so anyone can join in on this WIP. I figure this is a good one for an open WIP since there's probably about a 100 different approaches and color schemes to use on these guys. I picked out 2 of the 5 orcs to start with. As a big fan of Blizzard and Warcraft, I plan to paint these guys up in that style. Depending on how these turn out, I may try something different on the others. First step, washing, gluing, and basing: I removed most of their integrated bases, glued them to a round base, and then used Liquiditex Resin Sand to fill in and give texture. This stuff is great; fills the job of molding paste and texture in one go. I could have probably saved another step by just mixing my base color into the mix. It's white here as I had just put it on, but it dries almost completely clear.
  5. I finally got my kickstarter so I want to start a new WIP for it. I won't be able to post or paint every day, sometimes maybe once a week. The box actually arrived at my house on the day I had to go to Illinois, and after waiting for these for so long, it was a very loonngg trip. I am not actually going to take them all out of their packaging until I paint them, well that is the plan. I Decided to use my old caddy's from paint sets, I did not use them for the paint due to being slightly inconvenient I decided to start with the rats. I started cutting them off of the sticks with an xacto knife. I found that twisting them off made less bumpiness on the bottom of the bases, so I used the xacto knife and some sanding needles to file the rest of the base smooth. I do not plan on spending a ton of time on these little guys, I want them to look good but they do not have to be super well done.
  6. I haven't posted something here in this WIP forum in...so long I can't even begin to remember. I just sit and think and smoke comes out of my head and gears rattle around and nothing. But anyway. I started a WIP Tutorial type deal on my tumblr and blog *once it's done* and figured why not here too. This project is the Chapel from the Warhammer scenery/terrain line. I'm doing a full buildup from start to finish and showing every step and paint along the way. So here goes. (Tune in daily except weekends as there will be new updates until completion, this is my morning before work project.)
  7. Well, I thought I'd add my WiP Minis thread to the list, so here goes... First one here is going to be used for Sheska, the Fighter in one of the Games I run. This here is Torchbearer, my PC in a new Campaign I joined recently. He is a Warforged Fighter with the Firecrafter Theme. Basically, I describe him as "Fire, barely contained". In the Campaign's world, Warforged are made by fusing a soul to a Construct body and are made primarily by Kenku as servants. My PC's creator made him from a Fire Elemental soul and used him to carry his torch around. My PC was not amused by this and attacked the Kenku with a Sword of Fire that came out of his arm. He took the name "Torch" after this incident and is now on the run. GF
  8. This is the Group WIP thread for the Swamp Things set from the kickstarter. Here is an image of all four models with some possible paint choices that I have for them. I will be starting with Lizardman Warrior (the guy with the club).
  9. I figured that I had to start my Kickstarter painting with Mr. Bones so that he could help me watch over the rest of the paint jobs. I have started him and will update with pictures at the end of this paint session.
  10. Right, so while I wait for my Bones I'm going to attempt to do a WIP for the stuff I'm working through. I'm generally useless at taking progress pics so this will be a new experience for me. On the table at the moment I have my SDE monsters as a distraction and this... The first job was / is cleaning and assembly, so after a good scrub in soapy water I started to put together the main body. The fit was pretty bad and to assemble the 3 parts that I have already I had to boil and bend a few sections so that the sides and the spine meshed together even remotely. There are some gaps in there still but I intend going back in a filling them from the inside. The model comes with a clear plastic flying stand as well as a scenic resin one, so I'm going to use the resin on as otherwise whats the point? Here's the whole kit, minus the flying stand, awaiting my attentions, I've undercoated the inside of the mouth so I can paint that prior to assembly, I'll seal it off when finished with a light coat of varnish and then paint the rest of the fig when its all assembled. A dry fit of the parts has shown theres a hell of a lot more filling to be done once the 'face' gets put on, so I'm hoping my meagre putty pushing skills won't stand out too much on it. Its a pretty daunting job for me at the moment Still not sure what colour to paint it, I like the red scheme but I'm tempted to do a different route, maybe a deep black / purple up to a red highlight, not sure.... As I only get to paint at night I'm scared to get going on it as tired eyes make mistakes, maybe it will become a weekend job.
  11. Hey all, Now that I've got my Kickstarter Bones, I decided to start a separate WIP thread to help motivate and inspire me, as well as share my discovery process, flubs, thoughts, mistakes, and accidental successes with everyone. I'm brand new to this whole painting miniatures business, so any and all comments and advice are most welcome! I'll try to be as detailed as I was with my first (and so far, only) mini WIP, since a lot of people seemed to appreciate that; however, with roughly 250 minis to paint, I may not have the time to be as thorough. Unless noted otherwise, all paints used are Reaper Master Series paints, and all minis will be Bones figures from the first Reaper Bones Kickstarter. For the record, my pledge included a single Vampire box and one There Be Dragons add-on. The rest of my pledge was paints and a figure case. I look forward to learning and growing along with the rest of you talented people! Index of WIP figures: 77015 Bugbear Warrior (non-KS) 77016 Rats (scattered across many posts, but this is the beginning) 77195 Mr. Bones (started here), finished here in my WIP thread; also 74021 1" Square Skull Bases, his base (non-Kickstarter metal) 77018 Skeleton Archer (1) (Group WIP) 77018 Skeleton Archer (2) (Group WIP) 77164 Elliwyn Heatherlark, Gnome Bard (conversion) 80013 Nova Corp: Female 77136 Well of Chaos 77149 Damien, Hellborn Wizard 77040 Satheras, Male Warlock 77116 Colossal Skeleton 77016 Rats (single figure) (modified) and 74021 1" Square Skull Bases, its base (non-Kickstarter metal) 77039 Janan, Female Dragon Slayer 77001 Skeletal Spearmen (5 of them) 77017 Skeletal Swordsman (4 of them) 77017 Skeletal Swordsman (1 of them, separate project from the one listed above) 77149 Damien, Hellborn Wizard (conversion) (different project from the one mentioned above) 77073 Freja Fangbreaker 77034 Male High Wizard (separate thread) 77162 Yephima, Female Cloud Giant (separate thread) NOTE: Since I tend to have multiple minis in progress at a time, most of these do not have consecutive posts. The link will take you to the beginning of when I started working on each one, though. Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  12. Kala gaps.. joint plugs probably need some trimming. two legs dont actually sit on the base..
  13. Starting this one too.. the wings join through the body (pics later) aren't fitting right.. it looks like the socket has some extra bonesium in the bottom corners and so the plug of the other wing+leg won't seat completely.. there also appears to be a large gap in the chest where the plug side (wing + leg) joins. This also appears to be cause either by the plug not seating properly or the bottom part of the neck or the upper thigh on the wing+leg section needing some minor reduction for fit
  14. Hi All. I paint for Fun, I guess to what you'd call a tabletop standard. I'm pretty new here, and it only seems fair to share what I've been working on. So here goes. Comments and helpful critiques appreciated. I'm a s l o w painter and I've only got about five weeks before my Friends and I get together for our only game of the year. I'm not sure but I think I've got about twenty figures I'd like to have finished by then ~ or at least finished enough for us to use! I'm hoping this will help to keep me motivated and on track. 1st up is going to be my reward for getting through as many of 'em as I can. A gorgeous 1988 Tom Meier Limited Edition Elf, #33 of 92, that I got on eBay for my birthday a couple of years ago. My True Love ~ Classic Tom Meier 25 mm Ral Partha Elves and Dwarves, mainly circa '77 - '79, and a couple of GW/Citadels ? I'd appreciate any help identifying figs, so please feel free to chime in! I'd cleaned and primed them with <shudder> Krylon Grey about thirty years ago. I've gotten them off of their old tile bases and stripped 'em with Simple Green. Now they're freshly washed and ready to go. Got my glue ready ~ love Locktite Gel, but hate the packing! These are lead so yeah I wear rubber gloves until they're primed. Got my gloves on and then I noticed some flashing I'd missed . . . >sigh< It's back to cleaning . . . and then I saw Furongian's http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/49920-curating-your-collection/ and I decided to go ahead and take some more photos and make notes about these guys! While I'm getting my lead ready for basing here are a couple figs I've been working on recently. They still need finishing. Mainly touch ups and bases, sealing, then flocking. (I'm only cropping and using Auto Fix in PSElements.) And a little Reaper Love just for scale . . . Hope you Enjoy!
  15. So, here's my plan. I'm going to start this WIP thread, so I can track my progress from "terribad" through to "less terribad" I've been painting a few months now, and I've come a fair distance from where I started. Already progressing from "ludicrous-bad" (which I like to call "Plaid") up through "ridiculous-bad" and into "terribad". All of my progress so far has been a little bit of brush control, and a lot of knowledge that I've gleaned from the internet - thinning paints, washing, dry-brushing, and just recently attempting some layering. And I think with a lot of practice, and a lot more determination, and a even more help from you wonderful people, that I might actually be able to turn myself into a decent mini painter. Bear with me, it's gonna be a rough ride.
  16. Finally back. Feels like forever since I posted anything up here. So this is what I have been up to the last couple of days. I started with blocking in the main colors and making sure that the red and black switched placement on miniature at the right times. I am not thrilled with what I've done with the face, so I'll probably fix that soon if it drives me crazy enough. For the accents I'm planing on a golden yellow color. [C&C always welcome.
  17. So, in anticipation of my Kickstarter Bonenami arriving SoonTM, I decided to start my own WIP thread, even though I currently only have one Bones mini to my name. I decided to get a bugbear as my practice mini, (my tiny FLGS only had about 5 Bones to choose from :/ ), just to see what I was in for and familiarize myself with filing, boiling, painting and stripping paint, etc. These first three pics are of him straight out of the package. Needs boiling, obviously: He also looks like he was the victim of a botched beheading: Lastly, the straps that are supposed to be holding his shield to his arm are, instead, only attached to his arm. While I could forgive maybe one strap in this condition, all four attachment points are currently floating and it just looks silly: (edit: I retroactively took this picture after doing some work, in case you noticed that his neck looks better now. I'll detail more in my next post) Clearly, he's gonna need some work before I even think about touching paint, so it looks like I chose a good one for learning on! Huzzah! --OneBoot :D
  18. This is an attempt at an ongoing list of my various projects. I hope to list them chronologically in four categories (My minis, my cardstock builds, "Other, and My Daughter's Mad Paint Skills) My Miniature WIPs: Elf Pikeman - Warhammer Fantasy Tutorial box Minotaur and Goblins - Warhammer Quest Dwarf - Warhammer Quest 06023: Anhurian Swordsman - Reaper (Learn to Paint Kit #1 - WIP) 02544: Barrow Rat - Reaper (Learn to Paint Kit #1 - WIP) 02512: Tsuko, Male Monk - Reaper (Learn to Paint Kit #2 - WIP) 77005: Ogre Chieftain - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77195: Mr. Bones - Reaper Bones (WIP, Show Off) 77155: Lizardman Warrior - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77153: Snakeman Warrior - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77152: Marsh Troll - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77154: Lizardman Spearman - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77008: Garrick the Bold (Sir Forscale) - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77132: Barnabus Frost - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77076: Lysette, Female Elf, Reaper Bones (WIP) 77162: Yephima, Female Cloud Giant - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77026: Young Fire Dragon - Reaper Bones (WIP) 50085: Deep Sea Diver - Reaper Chronoscope (WIP) 77149: Damien, Hellborn Wizard - Reaper Bones (WIP) 77020: Bathalian - Reaper Bones (WIP) Cardstock Modeling WIPs: The Maiden in progress - Pirate Ship by WorldWorks Games The Maiden complete Castle Scene setup for gaming Underground Dungeon encounter The "Other" Category: DIY Light Tent complete (I really need to buy some lights to actually use this thing) My Little Pony Birthday Party Stuff My Daughter's Mad Paint Skills (and other young painters): My Daughter's First Miniature Talae's Daughter Paints Some More Minis My little sisters paint some minis Another Unicorn (her favorite model, by far) Note: The original content of this post is below this dotted line. This was done in an attempt to organize my progression in various aspects of my hobbies. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I figure that keeping all of what I do in one place is a decent idea. First things first: I recently cleared off and organized my workspace. This enabled me to spend last night and today working on a project that I had let go to the wayside (Pingo's thread inspired me to return to it): The Maiden. I have one built that I did years ago, but it is not color. It was a fun project at the time, but I have put off the color version for too long and it was the bulkiest thing on my workspace and so it makes sense to be the first project to complete. I am hoping that posting a couple of pics will help to motivate me. What would do even better is if some of you guys would post comments/questions/critiques/etc. My wonderful Robo-buddy: Some of the pieces laid out. They are on black foamcore and you can barely make out the transparencies in this pic: The hull is coming together: I will try and post some progress shots of what I get done tonight, but I am hoping you guys can help push me through this project.
  19. I finally got myself motivated to start painting again at home. And as my wife got a new camera I figured if I started a home WIP, I might even get around to building the light box I've been planning for a couple of months and start taking pictures with it. (Note: that hasn't happened yet, so expect my usual mediocre phone pictures.) To get myself going I went down and dug through an Army Transport of Chainmail figs to find something interesting. Picked out a Pulveriser first, but then he fell apart (good ol' 13 year old glue job) so it's now on the bench to get pinned. So I grabbed the Hammerer. I wanted something different to get me interested and an all metal construct is pretty different. I spent most of the evening playing with metals. I've got Reaper, Army Painter and Partha all on there. My P3 metals were all at work... My concept (which pretty much developed as I was doing the base coat) is to paint him as he is starting to activate after untold years waiting for someone to trigger him in whatever forgotten tomb he's guarding. This lets me play with a bunch of weathering stuff I've picked up recently. I also want to try painting the runes, and the eye slit, as if they were glowing a bit. So to begin with I gave him a wash of blackened brown with a bit of black mixed in. And that's how far I got in one night.
  20. Here's what I'm working on. I apologize the pictures were taken with my phone. This after about 2.5 hours of work. Initial Purple tones laid in with airbrush. Then I toned the purple and did some spot highlighting. This will be for the table top not competition.
  21. dedicating this section to my OLD Wip's and stuff just so I can find them without having search for half an hour through 70 pages of forums carrion-crown-pcs frp wip bathalian Kain from final fantasy pirate ships aka I have a habit of leaving stuff half way finished for a year. allosaurus raptor lox jarg gnoll pathfinder big #[email protected]%@#$ map bending your bones video well that's most of them. --------------------------------------- so as busy as the forums are getting I decided to locate all my wips to here. starting off are going to be 4 minis for my gf based on the walking dead. starting with rick The Frp Wip http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/48527-bunch-of-crap-from-frp-wip/ carrion crown pc's wip http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/48878-carrion-crown-pcs/
  22. I received my Bombshell Babes from Patick's Kickstarter and I must say I love the miniatures. I backed the kickstarter when I saw Dusty's concept art, so once I got them I wanted to paint her up. To help me stay motivated and to get some advice I figured I would make a WIP. So here she is as out of the box She had some flash and minor mold lines to take care, but overall her details are perfect for the sculpt. Since she is overall simple I hope to have her finished up fairly quickly at least for me. I will try to show the mistakes I make also if I remember to snap a photo of it, to help some of the newer painters that have joined the forums as I know I learn from others when they share there mistakes. Which right away I started with missing some flash after I had her primed and glued to her base. I noticed it so I took to shaving it off with my scalpel and applying brush on sealer to help even it out. If you look close in this picture you can see the flash on her left hand by the fingers and the uneven spots on her coat by her left leg. Here is the after picture you can see the bare metal covered by sealer, I also put some super glue on her right collar to even out a soft mold line I missed also.
  23. Finally got some time to work on painting today. Since I have gotten a bit stuck on the other minis I started these.
  24. I edited this post include a list of my tutorials: Sculpey Base Tutorial Marble Base Tutorial Maple Tree Tutorial Ode to Blue Face Painting Tutorial Original start of WIP: I've been meaning to start a running WIP thread. Might as well use this. I've been working on the Bones "Ice" Spider. I'd wanted to get it finished for the Winter Wonderland theme, but work interfered. We had a door related accident, and a glass bowl suffered, so I saved some pieces thinking they'd make good bases. The remainder of the glass is "seaglass" and some painted sculpey surrounding it. The web is hot glue. I coated the edges of the glass shard in hot glue because I don't want any unnecessary gaming war wounds. And it allows for a surface to attach the web. Now that I see the pics of it, I'll work on the eyes some more. I'm having a hard time making the fangs looks 'shiny' I just bought marine teal and saffron sunset, so I thought I'd try them out. I also threw in some nightshade purple, vallejo dark blue, pure white, and vallejo dark purple.
