  1. Bones 4 is next month, but I'm still working through my backlog from Bones 2, lol. Here's my version of Narthrax, my favorite dragon from that KS. This was a really fun mini to paint. More pics and a detailed WIP over at my blog (link down in my sig).
  2. Here we have a blind bag Marvel 500 figure, series 8 Red Guardian. Why? Mostly just because. Impulse purchase, never seen them before, curiosity driven I suppose. Sure, but why paint it? As it turns out this fig has been a great exercise (thus far) in blending that I am in most need of. Also I have been enjoying the process of basing. Something that I am finding every bit as enjoyable as the figure painting. At this point I based and initial shaded/highlighted the blue with an airbrush. I used some liquid masking, won't do that again. Tough to remove. Luckily the blue paint withstood the shower and gentle toothbrush scrub that I had to resort to. The lower face area has gotten a little attention. The blues have been getting highlight brush blends. The red and white are still in the basecoat stages. More to come.
  3. I thought I'd try to keep a work in progress of the process I'm making in Bones 3. I got distracted/bored during the Death Guard painting, and went back to some of the bones. "Heeey you guuuys!" The Fomorian just called to me. He felt left out when I painted the other Giants, I guess.
  4. I decided that my (admittedly small) collection of figs was starting to need a feminine element. I grabbed this gal from my stash and started another project to help distract me from my other projects. I also chose her because I am trying to learn my NMM and she's got a fair amount of armor. So far I have only done a few Barbarian males, so I am trying hard to be considerably "softer" with her skin tones. Her face is the also the only skin on this fig so I am trying to give it a lot of attention as I know it will be where the eye goes first (no pun intended). Hmmm, this is a phone camera photo and the skin color is a bit washed out. Oh well, this will serve as a good enough "starting point" post.
  5. Here is my next project I'm trying to focus on while filling in with the hill giant. This is a birthday present for a friend. I'm thinking of going for a dark angel look with reds, purples and blacks. I'll attach the wings after I get most of the upper portion painted up.
  6. Okay, this one has been sitting around for like foreever just primed, so I decided now that I have the Reaper LTPK, i'd start trying to finish him. I am pretty sure its a grenadier model, and that its a goblin:) but if someone else knows for sure, please let me know:)
  7. So I finally got my Reaper Bones Learn to paint core skills kit, and decided to use the techniques for the skeleton on these skeletons first (well sort of haha). The whitewashed skeleton was a Vallejo ivory model color bottle which seemed WAY more thin then the reaper stuff, so not too happy with it at the moment, but will take it through the other techniques and see how it plays out. The other skeleton is more true to the walkthrough in the LTPK book. They both of course had a black primer done before the base coat and they both had their bases done (one with kitty litter, the other just baking soda). the white one is only on the basecoat, where the other is ready for its drybrush. Will post more as they move along.
  8. So this is my next model in line to paint up. I'm hoping that this will give me some practice painting skin and faces, even though it's at a larger scale than a human sized figure. This is also my first bones model that I've started painting. Cleaned mold lines, assembled everything, pinned it to the base and green stuffed the gaps. Primed the base and green stuff and then I used brown line for my first coat on everything. Other than that I threw on a thinned down coat of cadmium skin. It will need a few more coats to cover the brown liner. I decided to get started on this while something else was drying. This one will probably move slowly as I will use him to fill time while I paint a couple of other figures. Thabks for looking!
  9. So I decided to base my grave wraith on one of those cool tea lights run off a 2032 battery. I will be adding some basing and then decide how to best paint this one. I have heard some people throw a varnish on it then do a nice wash, would hitting it with a can of testors dullcote then using a wash work? any suggestions is appreciated:) And I thought I was in the WIP forum:( can a MOD please move it:) sorry
  10. So, I'm preparing my prizes for the DDM Guild GenCon 50 events. Thought I'd share them here, too. So without further ado, Pictures! A Fire Giantess from the Storm Kings Thunder mini set. Nearly ready now. Biggest improvement I made was Eyebrows! Planetar Angel. Took these to my FLGS, Gatehouse Games, and showed them off. Just about everyone there said they liked the wings. A Female Tiefling Warlock. Gave her a better base using a Base Stamp. Also, realized I haven't taken a more recent picture of her. The 3.? Edition Iconic Psion. Cannot Pronounce OR Spell his name! Also, have done a lot since this picture was taken. Hope you enjoyed this. GF
  11. To add to the number of projects I'm falling behind on, I picked up the new 40k boxed set, "Dark Imperium": I'm really liking what I've seen for the new 40k, and although I haven't gotten a real game in in a long time, I've played Nurgle Chaos Space Marines for a long time. It's really cool to seem Marines the size they're supposed to be. I skipped over assembly photos, and went straight to the drybrushed armor. I think there's some shoulders and skin done in this photo, too: I haven't even primed the Poxwalkers yet. I already have a ton of modern/sci-fi zombie types, and while I do plan on using the new sculpts, I want to convert the second half a bit before I paint them. You can see my previous project, the poor Cave Goblins (of The Hobbit films), literally pushed to the side. I may work on them as a co-project, as they would make great Poxwalkers!
  12. There I was the hobby store, I had the bones version in my hand when I ran across the metal Pathfinder version, I opted for metal. Still working out my NMM, planning on some color glazing before it's done. I also decided that this dude gets an elaborate base. I don't play with my figs, so they will all be getting the advanced base treatment. I also decided to play with green stuff for the first time. I only have pics of the helmet mods right now, but there's more (next post). Thank's for droppin in and checkin this out, what do you think?
  13. Well, Here goes my first WIP, my first post, my first Bones figure. When I bought this guy, I had no idea what separated a Bones from the others. I am just getting back into the hobby. When I opened the package, I was a bit taken aback. "Flimsy rubber?!!" You know though. it's all good, I'm not experienced enough to have a preference between metal, plastic, pvc or resin. Once it has a prime coat on him, the painting process is the same so whatevs. This lil dude is kind of a tester piece for other projects and overall I am pretty happy with him so far. His arms were falling out of their sockets and needed to be re-glued. His back really lacked detail and the gluing of the arms didn't help too much. As a result the back is just about all freehand work on a smooth surface. For the first time in my many attempts to "get into" mini painting, I am finally starting to understand NMM. Not too good at it yet, but getting there. There is a face mask under the skull helmet that needs the treatment- small area, and it needs to pop in order to make any sense out his head. Speaking of the helmet, I freehanded the skull face as well, I think that is what the (lack of) details suggested. Lastly, I buried his OG base in PVA/sand atop a largeish washer for more stability. Thanks for stopping and looking. Fell free to C&C, I mean it, let me know how you really feel. I don't get hurt easy and it's the quickest way to improve. Here for advice not a "participation award" or a pat on the head. -Joe
  14. So, this Minotaur fellow has been staring at me in pieces for a while now. I've decided the time has come to get painting, and while I'm at it, make my first ever WIP post. Because in the words of the great Devo: "When a demon miniature comes along, you must WIP it!" End goal: mini to be used in my D&D campaign. He doesn't need to be display quality, but I'll still welcome your tips and suggestions to improve my work. So far I've just put down some brown liner and temporarily stuck it together to make sure everything is on track. Currently mixing up colours for the base coat... More soon! -E.E.
  15. As typical to form, I managed to get some painting time in finally. Rather than work on something I've already started, I started something new. My new project is Magister from the Forgotten Realms Ral Partha Set that I started a while ago. I can link to my other painted works from this set to give people a feel for my progress over the last couple of years (if anyone is interested). But for now I began with my usual 1st step in painting the face. I also base coated the the rest of the skin (the little bit of it there is). He has been primed and waiting on my desk longer than I thought he would. Here is how he looks at the moment:
  16. Hey! l haven't done a WIP thread in a while now. I know Bones III is the new hotness now, and Mal'drakhar is the shiny that everyone wants to paint. But I got a comission to paint Khanjira, and and one of my own to paint, too: The comission doesn't want to have "dinosaur colors or Godzilla colors" and likes the idea of a blue Khanjira. I'm flipping back and forth on mine; I might go with a red and purple color scheme, or I might do a "Pacific Rim"-inspired dark grey with a blue bioluminescent glow on his eyes, mouth and parts of his armor. I'll mock up some colors after I get one assembled and photographed. I started the comission yesterday, and so far have managed to trim the flash and mold lines from just four parts - and 10 more to go. There's a lot of mold lines on each part, and removing each one potato-peeler style takes a lot of time! (I tend to nibble them away.) At my rate, I estimate about 2-3 evenings left for removing mold lines on just the first one. Oh, and I just know that there'll be the question of why I don't take the 7-day goblin challenge. No, sorry, just no. I'm one of those types that can't stand exposed mold lines or gaps on my finished models, and resolving that alone would disqualify me for doing that before the challenge started, or take up too much of the week to finish on time. And also, I have still a few scraps of sanity left... and want to keep them! Next update when I finish surface cleanup and start fitting the pieces...
  17. Just finished up painting the skeleton archer I've been working on and decided on this guy as my next one up. Seems to be a devil or demon with a mask on maybe? I decided to to go with a purple cape and red skin on this guy. Probably make the axe gunmetal with some silver highlights. Not sure on the breast plate thingy he's wearing. Couple of details I've gone over in purple or red that will need changed. Comments and criticism welcome!
  18. Well after watching @Rahz paint up some of his Black Plague Abominations, I decided I wanted to get started on mine. So I though I'd gather up a WIP of my Journey through all the Zombicide Abominations. Modern: Season 1, Toxic CIty Black Plague: Core (x2), Wolfsburg (x2),Rat, Alpha, Troll, Blob, and Minotaur I decided to start with the Core BP set Abominations. I also wanted to try out my scale 75 F&G Unnatural Skin set. So here is where I begun.
  19. I figured I would make a WIP for the next mini I paint. I mostly have monsters to paint right now as I'm a little intimidated by trying to make skin look good. So far I've just got some areas base coated. Any comments, ideas or suggestions are welcome! Still trying to figure things out. The cloak and shirt are a little bright right now. I'm thinking the base colors might be closer to final highlight colors for those. Armor is a black undercoat for the dark silver metallic I'm planning.
  20. So with my ongoing RPG game heading into a new chapter, one that has a rather extensive focus on trolls, it was only right that I start painting up some of everyone's favorite regenerating, pyrophobes. So starting out with (from left to right) Lardgulp 2Headed Troll 02657 by S. Garrity, Bones Marsh Troll 77152 by J Wiebe, and the Bones Cave Troll 77004 by B. Siens. As you can see, the cave troll has already received a layer of blue liner to prepare for the rest of the paint job and has had his broccoli cut off to prepare for a rebasing (which will be a first ever attempt for me for this particular style of base. I do have another cave troll that might get added to this thread if time permits. I also have some Hordes trollbloods that will be used in the campaign as well, but will create a separate thread for them since they are a completely different company. Hoping to make some good progress on the cave troll at least today, though it is absolutely gorgeous outside, so will have to see. :)
  21. Hi everyone so I'm currently working on painting the 3 reaper mini's painted below. From left to right; Nonalla, Thor, and Telemnar. I'm mostly working on Thor pictured in the center first. Also for picture taking...Are the pics with flash better than the no flash pics? I've attached both for reference. No flash first, then the flash pics are second. So for Thor the barbarian its hard to tell, but I tried to dry brush his hair a lighter brown. I've just watched some of Ghool's painting videos on Youtube. Am I a lot better off if I try to actually paint on the highlights, or can dry brushing it on be sufficient? Also I'm having some trouble with his fur, I tried dry brushing a light brown/white over it, but is doesn't really look very good, what can I do to fix it? Or do I just need to go with an even lighter color? Thanks in advance!
  22. It was requested that I begin a Work In Progress thread for this piece. I don’t normally do WIP threads, so if anyone is looking for more detail, let me know. This model represents a bunch of firsts for me. This is my first bust, first resin, first model airbrushed, and first attempt at zenithal priming. The model comes in 5 pieces: The base, neck, and back of the head are the bulk, followed by the face/muzzle, and left/right horns. The Queen makes the fifth piece. Assembly was fairly easy and straightforward. Each piece received a good wash in soapy water. When dry, I super-glued things together, but there were a couple gaps that needed to be taken care of. I didn’t take any pictures at this stage. The gap was where the face met the horns on each side. After the putty cured, I broke out the airbrush and gave it a coat of Vallejo Black surface primer, followed by a zenithal coat of Vallejo White. For the Queen, she has been mounted on a straight pin and cork. The model came with a hole pre-drilled in both Queen, and the dragon horn on which she sits. At this stage she has received the same zenithal primer coat, a single coat of MSP Tanned Shadow, and the eyes have been started. Just need to shape them back into looking like eyes. Comments and critiques welcome.
  23. Because I apparently suffer from extreme ADHD when it comes to miniature painting... squirrel!! Ahem, the following are in various stages of WIP. Everything on the blob and rat has been applied by airbrush and mostly inks and washes to this point. The Abominataur has had some brushwork done since and is nearing completion. Tried something I picked up from a French Youtuber Hutif who mixes some satin varnish in with her inks when she sprays them. Will be doing a comparison on some different models at some point to see if it's actually doing anything but it seems to be helping the ink settle into the recesses better. Applying inks/washes through the airbrush has also been neat as you spray at such a low pressure that you can get really precise. If nothing else, it was great practice. These are not meant to be works of art, just messing around and hoping to get them on the table with 3 or so hours of work each. So far, the minotaur is the farthest along has had about 2 hours total. Thanks for looking.
  24. I saw amazing French sculptor Gautier Giroud posting up WIP pics of this amazing bust and knew I just HAD to have him, picked him up from Cinemodeles-creations. He's jumped up in my queue today while I'm home from work on a personal day. Here's the the cast in resin pieces, held together by some blue tack so I could take the pics of the resin - I've used my airbrush for the first time today, primed up Deadpool and 4 giants (the giants first to get the hang of the airbrush). Here's where he's at now - I drilled holes in his nose so that I can do the smoke sniffing scene as it's meant to be from the movie, which I'll probably use cotton or some other material to complete the effect. Going to get started on some painting of him now.
  25. Well this month I decided to join in the hangouts mini. Got started on mine tonight on the hangouts. Went with the green skin as all my other's I have are painted up as greenskins. I mostly base coated tonight during the hangout. Here is what I got accomplished.
