  1. Hello forum folks I have not been painting anything the last half year or so, as my left elbow and lower arm have not been working properly, ligament problems leaving me unable to hold anything small still for any length of time, or at all. But it is getting better, and I have been getting a lot of prepwork done on of alot of the masses and masses of minis that have arrived, fulfilling the last years kickstarters. The Kings of War and Reaper Bones has been delivered and are now complete, and the third and last Dreadball shipment is probably in the mail, leaving me with more minis than spa
  2. I'm still fairly new to this hobby, and I've decided that my impatience is harming my paint-jobs. I've therefore decided to jump on board Inarah's challenge and paint Lysette. I'm hoping people here can help analyse my process and identify why, precisely, I suck :) Just some shadow coats for now: Vallejo Yellow Olive, Auburn Shadow, Fair Shadow and Flesh Wash: The eyes aren't quite working for me at the moment. Any suggestions?
  3. I finally got myself motivated to start painting again at home. And as my wife got a new camera I figured if I started a home WIP, I might even get around to building the light box I've been planning for a couple of months and start taking pictures with it. (Note: that hasn't happened yet, so expect my usual mediocre phone pictures.) To get myself going I went down and dug through an Army Transport of Chainmail figs to find something interesting. Picked out a Pulveriser first, but then he fell apart (good ol' 13 year old glue job) so it's now on the bench to get pinned. So I grabbed th
  4. Started working on Almaran the Gold this weekend for my son. I decided to play with some new techniques and try and refine some others. I started by covering in black gesso and then cutting of his shield arm so I could work on it seperately. I airbrushed him with gray and then drybrushed with Citadel Necro compound (dry silver). I really like the way this worked for the plate and will repeat this on the next full plate I work on. For the shield, I blended some browns for the wings and have it mostly done. Still need to do the weapon on the shield and the edge. For the body, I d
  5. Hey again, I figured I would stop by and show my progress on my next project. Like the topic name suggests I am answering the question of "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?" the answer being obviously: Reaper 50217: The Black Mist (*Cough The Shadow cough cough*) Now this is only my second miniature and I'm not finished with him yet (lots of touch ups that I need to finish up), but here is my progress with him so far: Biggest issue I had so far would have to be the eyes...between the scarf and the hat it was a pain to paint the eyes. Don't mind the strange text
  6. I'm trying to stay motivated and get some projects finished up before my vacation is over, so I figured why not start a WIP. First up is the Ghost King. He reminded me a lot of Shredder so that's what I'm going for at the moment. Next up is the well. I've been fairly uninspired by this one. More than likely I will just hit it with some drybrush and pick out some of the other details. This is an eventual christmas gift for my Mother in law. I've just about finished blocking in the colors and drybrushing the fur. I have an oblong 3x4 base that I'm going to affix them to once
  7. This is the Group WIP thread for the Swamp Things set from the kickstarter. Here is an image of all four models with some possible paint choices that I have for them. I will be starting with Lizardman Warrior (the guy with the club).
  8. I would consider myself far more of a gamer than a painter. In fact, I got in on the Reaper Kickstarter specifically because I saw so much potential in their miniatures for use in -that- tabletop game. As a gamer, I therefore tend to paint for the tabletop rather than aspiring towards some of the amazing work I've been browsing through on these forums over the past few days. That's not to say that I don't keep telling myself that if I actually managed to force myself to sit and work on the same mini for days or weeks at a time that I might not be able to achieve something appealing...but there
  9. I'm painting another mini for a friend. His character frequently rides around on a dire wolf but sometimes needs to leave him behind. So, using a refrigerator magnet I made it so that his character can separate from the base of the warg. I'll fill the whole either with a tree or a bush. Haven't decided completely yet. Maybe a creepy monolith. Here they are before paint hit them.
  10. One of my friends commissioned me to paint this for her. It's a mini from Paizo.com, she picked it up at gencon a few years back. This Link will take you to where you can get one for yourself if you desire it. Stock photo: I cut off the base...toughest base I've ever cut off...took me almost a day at work. I rebased and added a log for decoration.
  11. I'm painting up 77026: Young Fire Dragon as a white dragon for an upcoming D&D game, and I was feeling a little frustrated and wasn't making very much progress, so I thought I'd take a few pictures and toss them up here. I still plan to give special attention to his eyes, mouth, and base. I am considering doing the little wing spikes and tail spikes as boney protrusions in a warmer white, shaded to a pale warm brown? I would especially like opinions on the wings: is the shading reasonable? Are the transitions smooth enough? Also, is there enough contrast on the body? His little ch
  12. Disclosure: I am not a professional painter. You could probably see this by the pictures. I consider myself the typical average guy who collects and paints minis. That being said, here is my WIP pics for a few of the Bones I did. This first pic is base+some drybrushing on the owlbear and werewolf, and base only on the elemental And here is the elemental all finished up, with some minor work needed on the base and that's it.
  13. I have another project to make minis for a family of draconians, the SkaRae family. These have required heavy modifications, especially for the females, since there's no female draconian types out there. Here's the first, the patriarch, Koshrel SkaRae, (03316) Kar'Drakir. I've put in spikes to make a fin on his head, took off his base (a total pain in the hand), drilled holes in his back for wings, and sculpted armour on his chest. I'll be sculpting armour and straps on once I get the wings on, which will come after the fin for his head.
  14. I haven't posted something here in this WIP forum in...so long I can't even begin to remember. I just sit and think and smoke comes out of my head and gears rattle around and nothing. But anyway. I started a WIP Tutorial type deal on my tumblr and blog *once it's done* and figured why not here too. This project is the Chapel from the Warhammer scenery/terrain line. I'm doing a full buildup from start to finish and showing every step and paint along the way. So here goes. (Tune in daily except weekends as there will be new updates until completion, this is my morning before work proje
  15. I figured that I had to start my Kickstarter painting with Mr. Bones so that he could help me watch over the rest of the paint jobs. I have started him and will update with pictures at the end of this paint session.
  16. I finally got my kickstarter so I want to start a new WIP for it. I won't be able to post or paint every day, sometimes maybe once a week. The box actually arrived at my house on the day I had to go to Illinois, and after waiting for these for so long, it was a very loonngg trip. I am not actually going to take them all out of their packaging until I paint them, well that is the plan. I Decided to use my old caddy's from paint sets, I did not use them for the paint due to being slightly inconvenient I decided to start with the rats. I started cutting them off of the sti
  17. Finally back. Feels like forever since I posted anything up here. So this is what I have been up to the last couple of days. I started with blocking in the main colors and making sure that the red and black switched placement on miniature at the right times. I am not thrilled with what I've done with the face, so I'll probably fix that soon if it drives me crazy enough. For the accents I'm planing on a golden yellow color. [C&C always welcome.
  18. Here's what I'm working on. I apologize the pictures were taken with my phone. This after about 2.5 hours of work. Initial Purple tones laid in with airbrush. Then I toned the purple and did some spot highlighting. This will be for the table top not competition.
  19. I received my Bombshell Babes from Patick's Kickstarter and I must say I love the miniatures. I backed the kickstarter when I saw Dusty's concept art, so once I got them I wanted to paint her up. To help me stay motivated and to get some advice I figured I would make a WIP. So here she is as out of the box She had some flash and minor mold lines to take care, but overall her details are perfect for the sculpt. Since she is overall simple I hope to have her finished up fairly quickly at least for me. I will try to show the mistakes I make also if I remember to snap a photo of it
  20. So I mentioned in my WIP thread for my mohawk dwarf that I was working on dwarven chieftains for the other main clans in the world my husband has created for D&D. I figured while I was taking pictures of the mohawk dwarf (Chieftain of the Erdunir Clan Emerald) that I should make a WIP thread for the rest of them too. First up, chief of the MagmaFist Clan, (14561) King Axehelm of Kragmarr. He's a mountain dwarf. Chief of the duergar SteelSilk clan, (14324) Herryk Aesir. Chief of the Thumbbreaker Clan, also mountain dwarves, (14042) Thorgram. Chief of the deep dwarf Dulvin
  21. Here are my next two minis, Wood Elf Archer in Chainmail w/ Plates and Wood Elf Noble Lady in Traveling Clothes from Thunderbolt Mountain. They're 30mm but they are very small so this is probably gonna take a while. Here they are primed (I see I missed a spot): I'm anxious to see if I can paint their teeny tiny details, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.
  22. I picked this one up for one of my players who is playing a Mwangi (PFRPG African) ranger who fights with spear and shield. Unfortunately that player had to drop out of my game, but I'm still going to paint up the mini the way I originally planned. First he got de-elfed. Chopped off those pointy things and shaped the helmet ear-holes so it looked more-or-less normal. Here's the base coat. I've been struggling this winter with my paints - the low humidity drastically changes how they work and I'm not yet skilled enough to adapt. I tried mixing paints with more matte medium to avoid cha
  23. http://www.reapermini.com/forum/index.php?/topic/46419-tsr-drow-by-ral-partha/ So from this WIP above, here are the final results of the four drow elves from Ral Partha that I've been painting since November 11. I finished them actually about two nights ago, but just finally got around to working on the last pictures. I'm pretty well satisfied how they turned out, even though I can also see a few issues as well. I think a little too much matte finish got put on the one with the shield because I can see a lot of glare with the photograph, but oh well. I actually enjoyed doing this and
  24. Here is the project that started the thread about painting granite:
  25. Hi everyone, I just started working on this beautiful model. Leorelex was sculpted by Geoff Valley and was released in 2004. For now, I only started working on the putty base. I want to make it look like it's an eroded sea shore. I'm mixed between sculpting waves or using realistic water effect. Should I sculpt green stuff waves like I did for my Karkarius or Scuttlebones, or should I try using realistic water to creats a more transparent aspect?
