Been a minute since I've posted a WIP, so I figure I'd roughly document my current paintjob. I'm running a 5e game with a heavy focus on the Shadowfell, and our most recent addition to the party is a native of that realm - a Hexblood or "Hexen" in our game lore. These dark fey are the children of hags - The Mothers Three - and are made from earth, blood, and stolen souls. Going for a dark but vibrant paintjob - blue skin, and dark clothing. After priming, I like to block in my darkest colors. It makes it easier for me to avoid missing a hard-to-reach spot later, but without worrying too much if I get some paint where it's not supposed to be. This method also helps me to visualize and plan out my colors better. I was instructed to paint her with blue skin, black hair, and dark clothing. I started with the skin. I based with Rich Indigo and plan on working up towards Surf Aqua. I'm hoping this transition from a more purple-hue in the shadows to a bit of green in the highlight will look interesting, as well as kind of capture the overall color scheme. I chose a few other colors to sort of represent that scheme and stippled them over the base - Rich Indigo, Deep Ocean, and Carnival Purple. I eventually want the base to look like rocky terrain, but wanted to avoid neutral greys. Pure Black for the hair and then set about base coating the rest of the mini. I wanted to avoid all-black or shades of grey in her outfit so dark greens and purples will be used to keep things more colorful. The tattered robes got a mix of Pure Black and Deep Ocean. The fabric wraps are Dark Elf Shadow - hoping to keep the purpleish greys. I also slapped some Deep Ocean on the gemstone on her staff for a pop of color - will reuse this for other gemstone details. The base got washed in Pure Black - will play around with some drybrushing later. Metal details also got hit with pure black to work up to some NMM silver. Settled on Ashen Brown for the bone details. The slightly cooler purple hue should help the bones blend in with the rest of the mini. Also hoping to use the Ashen Brown to highlight the hair without it looking grey. Not much to see so far - just some quick basecoating before work this morning. Hoping she turns out as I'm picturing and not just a garish blob. Side note - this sculpt is one of those earlier Bones sculpts that are quite difficult to pick out details. I'm inevitably going to paint over some random blob and not notice until later.

So, let's get this show on the road, shall we. I have been... remiss... in actually documenting the painting I've been doing. Partially because this has mostly been utter speed painting of the "get paint on Bonesium so it doesn't all look the same from six feet away" variety, partly various other reasons. But today is Paintsgiving (my parents live in Texas. I do not. Hence...). So I have a little time. And some projects I want to get completed before Sunday (the next session of the high-level D&D5e game I play in - we're talking high level here, folks. The party currently includes a Chosen of Tymora, a halfling wizard whose next goal after we're done with this is to overthrow the Maharajah of the City of Brass, and become a Demigod of Fire... etc.) - currently our endgame for this story arc is shanking Lolth (or "she who will not be named" because we're not interested in drowing (drawing, but I liked the typo, so I left it...) her attention) and freeing the dark elven people from her bullcrap. So, the first set of "finish these" are - Deena Halentyr, Chosen of Tymora and her Sixth Dagger (one of Tymora's secret agents), and default leader of the band of adventurers known as Calculated Risk ("Our opponents have always taken a risk that was calculated... but they have also always been bad at math". Human, but currently taking on the aspect of one of Tymora's Solars (with her permission, and the help of a True Polymorph). Solars are supposed to be Large, but none of the minis I looked at really fit the bill besides the Angel of Shadow (especially not the Bones Solar, which is a pretty cool mini... but is about the beariest Bear that ever beared... and Deena is definitely not that. In fact pretty much the opposite - Deena is the femmiest Femme that ever looked at another woman and said "she's really cute." So, colors - Blues and silver were pretty much required - first, I love them, second, Tymora's colors run to blues and silvers, and third, Deena had already been noted (manymany sessions ago) as preferring them even before she took up Fortune's Coin. Her wings are (very) roughly based on the lipstick lesbian pride flag - but I stuck to only three colors (a dark red, a dark pink/rose, and a light pink/white) because with six the wings would be too busy, and the numbering doesn't match up - whereas with three, the wings start at the tips with red, and end at the base with red. Her skin will be a dark tan, her boots will probably be chocolate with some bright lacing, and the lantern will probably be my first half-serious attempt at some OSL. The rest of her wings will be some shades of blue - likely starting darker at the top and working my way down. Her eyes are heterochromatic, and she's a Higher Being (right now), so one will be bright green (solid) and the other bright blue (same). Hair got roughly blocked in with red ink, which should give everyone an idea of what her hair color is... I'm unsure what to do with shading for her - I don't want to just use one of the Army Painter quickshades, or something from GW, because I'm concerned it will draw the color down too far (and then I'll have to spend too much time bringing it back up again - which, honestly, is work I always hate (re-)doing - "I already painted this once, and now I have to redo it?!?!") I'm considering using one of the red inks I have (Army Painter red tone, or Reaper Red Liner/ink) but I'm not sure how well that would work? Deena's Familiar/Patronus/best friend, Bastia. She's a Tressym (theoretically - she's actually a Spirit of Tymora, but everyone mostly ignores this fact because she's adorable and cute and very much the epitome of "what if a cat had wings and an IQ of 110?"). Stones will be stonelike. Her body will probably be a sort of dark-grey-ish color, with slightly darker in the wing membranes, and a lighter shade on the ruffs in her fur. Like Deena's eyes, hers are heterochromatic - blue and green. Did we mention that one of Bastia's powers is she can get bigger? She can get bigger, and spoopier. The miniature is Ral Partha (now produced by Iron Wind Metals) Winged Panther. I'm likely to use Reaper's glorious Nightmare Black for her (I will be so sad when I run out of this) - a dark grey for the inside of her ears, something like silver for her claws (her attacks are magical in this form), and, again, blue and green eyes. If I was feeling really inspired (and had more time), I'd try and do a starscape effect on her wings, but, I'd rather learn something like that on minis I don't care about... Garrius is a Triton Paladin! He is Very Loud and Forthright, and sometimes Not Very Bright, because INT was his dump stat! He has No Fashion Sense Whatsoever! Deena is very fond of Garrius, even if he's a blooming idiot, because he's a very honest blooming idiot who is actually fairly self-aware (low INT, decent WIS). This... is not my finest work, at all. I'm painting directly onto Bonesium because that's how the player started with him, and I didn't want to strip off all of his work and start over, but I also wanted the mini to actually have paint on it - so this is sort of a mercy painting. "Has no fashion sense whatsoever" and "has lots and lots of money, and not much idea what to do with it" sort of runs the show, here - Garrius is bright and bold and clashing, and has made a lot of clothiers very wealthy with his gullibility... Iron Trumpet wants to be immortal, and wants to be a god. For someone who is as smart as he is, he sometimes needs to be reminded that the latter mostly encompasses the former (as much as one can in the Forgotten Realms). He's not evil... per se... but to a degree this is only because he hangs around with (and is slightly scared of) Deena, who has tried very hard to keep him (and most of the rest of Calculated Risk, who lean in the main towards self-interested/not quite Dark Side in alignment... ) on, if not the straight (yeah, right...) and narrow, at least targeted at people where if they end up dead, it makes the world a better place (so, red wizards, evil giants and dragons, evil ifrit lords, Lolthite priestesses, and the like). Iron's mini was a combination of "Iron needs a mini" and "hey, that one is kinda cool, and fiery halflings... who does this remind me of" - the sculpt is neat, the priming on this one actually wasn't bad.

Hello! I've recently started working on a diorama, and a friend of mine urged me to post here. The only thing that is missing from the pictures below is the kelp that will be behind the kraken (on the little pads on the back side of the base). It is some floppy aquarium kelp that I"m currently trying to figure out how to get it to stand up straight. Tips, tricks, C&C are all welcomed. Here is the pre-primed coral wall in varying states of sand coverage. The coral is planned to be very brightly colored. Primed base: You can see the kelp pads in the pic above. Base with Kraken for staging verification: Here is the almost finished diver, who goes in the slot in front of the Kraken. This drab, dirty human looking down at his feet while the kraken looms above is one of my favorite parts, tbh. Cheers! Valk

I thought I'd try to keep a work in progress of the process I'm making in Bones 3. I got distracted/bored during the Death Guard painting, and went back to some of the bones. "Heeey you guuuys!" The Fomorian just called to me. He felt left out when I painted the other Giants, I guess.

Something I haven't done on the forum before is actually do a WIP that shows me working through the stages on a model. So, to hopefully get my advice and motivation, I will document my progress on Cinder. As I am normally focused mostly on table-top quality, and rushing through things, this will be a big change for me. Any advice or criticism appreciated. Today I have the first layers done. I am going more for a black and purple dragon (think Disney's Sleeping Beauty). The scales will be highlighted with dark purples to still read black but be unified, while the belly and wing membranes will be purple. The first base coat of black/purple has been laid down but my poor photography and really subtle transition are lost in the photos.

Hello fellow Forumites! I always enjoy coming back from ReaperCon, as my creative battery has been recharged and I'm ready to paint again! I'm currently working on a special project for someone who plays fierce female barbarian brawlers in her Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. I'm even painting it in her image, complete with upper leg tattoos. Reaper's "Viking Girl" sculpted by Bobby Jackson was the perfect choice for this! I'm still not convinced I can pull off this freehand tattoos, but I try something new in every project and I can always paint over it in skin tone if it becomes too overwhelming. I'm using Reaper's Highland Moss & Pale Lichen for the cloak. After taking Rhonda Bender's "Level Up" class at ReaperCon, I've decided to experiment with more interesting shadow colors in my minis. In the past, I would have chosen a dark olive green for the shadows of the cloak, however, this time I've mixed the mid tone Highland Moss with a touch of Nightshade Purple for the darkest folds and recesses of her cloak. After that, I started to layer in more of the midtone color mixed with Pale Lichen (~50//50 mix). I blend as I go and make my way up to Pale Lichen on the highlights of the folds. While I may go up an additional level of highlight, mixing in some Pure White with Pale Lichen, I'll see how much contrast I have on other sections of the mini once she's almost done. Either way, the back of the cloak could use some additional smooth blending, so I'll be sure to revisit that at a later time. Here's what I've painted so far, each step follows each set of images starting from top to bottom. Step 1: Basecoats & shadows for cloak, hair and gems Step 2: Cloak highlights. Repeat steps 1 & 2 on front loincloth-cloak thingy. Blend, blend, blend... Step 3: Hair highlights (more to come), fur, gems, jewelry & starting on the sword Next up is finishing her sword, then boots, gloves and shield. And then maybe I'll consider giving her some dirt on the bottom of her cloak as a final touch (if I can bring myself to smear pigment over something I've painstakingly blended lol) However, I'm having a hard time deciding where to place her eyes since her hair covers a portion of each eyeball, which makes it especially tricky. I'll need to make sure to leave enough white sclera in each eye to make the direction clear. I'm leaning toward painting her looking left, toward her sword, like she's threatening someone or pointing at something on the ground. What do you think?

03698: Tengu Rogue by Derek Schubert This miniatures was done for the miniature Summer Exchange 2015 for Marineal. I tried a new masking technique with this one and used yellow (instense yellow) to back the bands. Colors in, now time for shading The base are two wood disks of different size bought from Hobby Lobby. I then glued them together and used a hole saw to crave out the spot for the MDF base. Greenstuff and sand. Made the large plant and log by hand.

Started work on this Uskuluz Greyhide about 85% of the way through Anval Thricedamned. I think you all will like this progression everyone. Please let me know of some color choice you might think for the bits and bobs hanging off of him. ___________________________________________ The base is done with spackle, sand and some old pieces from a Reaper figure WAY back in the day. 10points if you can figure it out! C&C Welome!

I decided I would create a WIP thread, because I've painted a whole bunch of minis since my first posts, but just haven't had the chance to post the photos I've taken along the way. I'm not going to post those ones (unless requested), but I'm hoping to take advantage of my impending down time in a few weeks. I also hope to post more regularly with a thread to manage. So here's the next batch of minis I'm working on. Another werewolf: this one a grey one Another translucent ghost: this one I just want to try a quick drybrush in ashen blue the bones ghost and the LTPK 4 models I figure the werewolf will be faster a second time around, and both the ghosts will be relatively quick, leaving me time for the lining experiments. I have another dozen or so minis on hand for when that's done.

This is an open thread for our 2013 Dragon Painting Extravaganza! I started Cinder back when...um...she was released. Yeah, shelf of super shame. Here's what I've got so far. I may strip her on account of I started painting her when I had no light, so now her paint looks super thick, but at least you get an idea of the plan. Ok, feel free to join in!

Picked this guy up yesterday and it has been real fun to paint. I figured I would post progress on him as I go along. I'm going to try and do his fur cloak like a lion. I just wanted to try something different, because it always seems like I'm painting wolf pelt.

hi everyone, I'm new here, and I just started using my husband's brushes and colors. I have to admit I had some fun with previous kit rat and Anuryan, getting somewhat imprecise but nice results. But now I'm having a harder time with some details on the Tsuko miniature. Mouth, chest skintone, a scar I added to left eye: I have some trouble resolving these details. I used black primer (I really can't follow directions as you can notice...), and I tried the Highland moss green triad instead of the red in the kit, as well as less tanned skintones, even if the pics seems more greyish than original. And I have to admit I started practing layering but then was tempted and added some washing, messing up especially on the chest. I'm almost done, as soon as I decide how to paint those details; and hopefully with any comment or critics on your part I can get a satisfying result. My husband is very supportive and nice, maybe I 'll get more neutral opinions from you :) Thanks everyone!
