  1. CMON has launched a new KS campaign for another iteration in the Zombicide franchise. This one, like Zombicide: Black Plague, is set in a medieval fantasy setting, so it'll go well with D&D. Unlike Black Plage, it's winter themed, and also based on more eastern mythology and history. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cmon/zombicide-white-death/description I think perhaps the most interesting thing about this set is that you get a good set of city guards, and then a horde of zombies in the same city guard armor! :D There are of course several other monsters and heroes that are very interesting, including minis for several different types of beastfolk that'll work well for tabaxi, werebear, etc. I'm in for $1 so I get access to the pledge manager later. Oh yeah, and there's a set of extra heroes with designs based on the members of the metal band Lacuna Coil. I like some of their songs, but I don't really care about that specifically. They look like they might be some nice minis to have, though. :P
  2. I got four of these guys in that same undead sampler pack I mentioned in my post about the Damned Company. It contained a few different parts, so there was room for a decent amount of customization (there's a ton more parts I didn't even use...into the bits box they go!). For the sake of variety, I ended up using some zombie heads (from the same sampler pack) on two of these guys. So...they can read as zombies or ghouls on the table. I go back and forth on whether or not I like the various spikes they have shoved through their bodies. Overall, I guess it looks okay. I do wish they were made of a *slightly* softer plastic...I'm super-worried about those fingers snapping off at some point. Anyway, I kept the paint jobs fairly basic on the clothing for easy identification during play ("blue guy," "brown guy," and so forth). Blue guy: I think the blue guy is my favorite. They knocked it out of the park when sculpting that particular head. Brown guy: I didn't realize until I'd started basecoating that this guy had half of his face ripped off right down to the bone. Another very cool head sculpt. Green guy: I struggled to get decent pictures of this guy. The camera doesn't seem to like that hunched over pose. Dark Gray guy: Nothing much to say about this guy. He's a guy...he's wearing dark gray...he really needs to see to that exposed brain in the back of his head. Comments and criticism welcomed.
  3. These are for a new game called Star Schlock, but I loved them so bought them separately. Lots of Vallejo Fluorescent Green for the bones worked really well.
  4. Got inspired by @R2ED to paint some monochome zombies. Quite happy with the result. Coal black, Maggot White, and added some Ebony Skin for the shadows. So - not really monochome, but let's not be too picky 😇
  5. Painted some zombies for my Rangers of Shadowdeep games, they were quick and fun to paint
  6. So awhile back Uncle Adam on the YouTube mentioned something about making a Halloween themed killteam scenario. It seemed like a pretty good idea and after a lot of thought I decided to give it a try. How hard could it be to make a custom scenario for the spooky season? Having seen quite a few interesting wave based custom scenarios I knew that was the way I wanted to go. I also knew I wanted to use the undead (zombies and skeletons). So the first problem is that I don't have enough zombies and skeletons for a wave based scenario. Not exactly wanting to break the bank for what will probably be a one off game I started looking for some cheap zombies. Turns out I didn't have to look hard or for very long. Zombies!!! Glowing Bag O' Zombies was just the ticket with 100 zombies (in four sculpts) for about $12 all in. Now they're a little on the small size, but again this is a one off game. Besides painting a hundred figures for a one off game I don't think my buddies will have too much to say. Armed with this bag and the few undead I already have I think I'll have enough enemies to go around. Or maybe I need another bag? I started out the night with two different sculpts with the simple intention of figuring out color schemes. First up was either a construction worker or a hunter, and honestly even after painting it I'm still not sure. As I blocked out the colors I was better able to see the figure's details, though I still don't know if it's a construction worker or a hunter. Would you call that a construnter? I hit everything minus the skin and gore when I had an idea. I just might be able to put that grey primer to work. With just a red wash I might be able to completely skip painting the skin and gore. I wouldn't exactly call it a success, but it's not terrible. This guy will probably squeak by as is but it looks like I'll be painting skin afterall. Next up was a fellow carrying a severed leg. On this one I painted a skin tone but used just a wash again for the gore. I think it looks better, but I'm still on the fence. Though neither figure is finished I can't believe how quickly they painted up. Knowing that a batch paint was the next step I attached all the construction/hunters (construnters) to craft sticks. Then seeing how much paint was leftover on my palette from this and a previous project I went ahead and basecoated all the pants. I did not expect to do so much in just one night, but then again we all know I won't keep this pace.
  7. I know I messed up the timing this year, and worked on Deadcember instead of Orctober. I wasn't feeling super-motivated by the small amount of unpainted Orcs I had, but from my Frostgrave II: Arcanic Boogaloo order had a ton of the living dead. And one never has enough Zombies. However, it means there's plenty of spookybois to be shown off! The Draugr, mostly converted from the Fireforge Living Dead Peasants and Frostgrave Barbarians with some Warhammer bits. The Knockers, again Fireforge Living Dead Peasants with Warhammer Dwarf Miners hats and bits from Mantic and Mage Knight. I think I should go back and add big rucksacks...and redo the flames to be the correct order. Just plain Fireforge Living Dead Peasants, with the exception of a Frostgrave Cultist head for the Executioner. The Old Vet, a 3D print from Retro Quest Undead Pirates from EC3D "Depths of Savage Atoll" Former Imperials, converted from Warhammer Empire, Mantic Undead, and Frostgrave Cultists (Undead bits) Mostly Mantic. Beware the spine whip! And lastly, when your Necromancer runs out of skulls, the Creeping Claws! 3D prints from Crippled God Foundry
  8. Crawling back from the dead here with this fun little handful of zombies! Added some gravestones to a few of them using popsicle sticks. Just good ole' classic grave crawling zombies. Went for a dusty color palette. Which one do you think turned out best?
  9. Here is a set of five zombies I painted up - first 2 are wizkids and I found I did not really like the sculpt, a sort of Elvis pirate looking zombie. Second three are a mix of a wizkid and two reaper zombies. Quick paint ups for the table - being fortune to have an in-house group to play with!
  10. Paintedfor a painting league in another forum: "Bring Out Your Dead!" I envision this as a wandering band who collects the dead. Sometimes they need to make ther cargo dead first. Being death warmed over themselves, they do not know what else to do with their unlives. lots more pictures beneath the click:
  11. Tre Manor is still working to fulfill his Warbands of the Dark Beyond across the pond, but I painted up the zombies to be a higher grade of zombie for my dnd game. I got the chaos bases at ReaperCon and wanted them to look like they were fueled with necrotic energy further powering the zombies!!
  12. Between moving and starting a new job this spring, there has not been a lot of time for painting. Plus there was the time taken to inventory Bones IV. I want to try and establish a more regular painting routine, and I thought I would start with some figures that I could do quickly. Several years ago, I purchased some Axis Zombies for the Dust Tactics game. I had no interest in playing the game, but I liked several figures from the range. Last night I did some quick mold line removal (not too worried if I missed some) and gave them a quick coat of primer. I am hoping to get started on them this evening.
  13. Luke and Elise thought they could escape the zombie apocalypse by heading to the countryside. Oh dear. These minis don't have names, so I christened one as Luke because his open white shirt and blond hair remind me of Luke Skywalker on some of the original Star Wars posters and Elise got her name because the Cure's "Letter to Elise" was playing as I was finishing her paint job. My girlfriend took one look at these and said, "If you put them opposite each other it looks like they're in a dance-off". And she's right.
  14. Just a pair of rotty zombos I painted up in late 2014 or early 2015. I like them because of the period inspecificity: they work equally well as peasant fantasy zombies or pulp-era modern zombies. The crouching one (Reggie?) looks particularly famished for braaaaaaaaaaiiiiiins.
  15. These guys have quite a bit of personality in their sculpts and I tried to bring that out while experimenting with different flesh tones. First up is Bob. He was once a predatory used car salesman of the "buy here, pay here" variety until a nip from a disgruntled customer caused him to go feral. Next is Betty, who was spending a lazy day hanging laundry on the line when a hungry neighbor unexpectedly launched himself over the fence and gnawed on her a bit. Next is Slabby, possibly patient zero, who has escaped from his drawer in the local morgue to cause a bit of mayhem. Next is Moose, who was a member in good standing of the Tunnel Snakes until he forgot to lock the door to his shelter before passing out in a drunken stupor. And finally there is Steve, who is in the unenviable position of having to wear his work uniform throughout an eternity of undeath.
  16. I suck at photography. Took probably twenty pictures, trying to find an angle, distance, light combo that accurately reflected how good these look, but finally gave up. They're good enough for the Black Plague table-top anyway.
  17. Finished ancient zombie #1...as I was playing with the skin tone I decided to go very dark...I don't want all caucasian zombies in the diorama so I might as well start practicing other skin tones...he's just OK I guess...there are things I like about how he turned out and things I don't like...still learning on miniatures...
  18. Base colors done. Need to do the flagstone tiles on their bases and then apply quickshader. Very tired of being such a slow painter.
  19. My fourth miniature...I went for a very muted color scheme on this guy..he came in a 5 pack of similar zombies that resemble the tar-man zombies from "Return Of The Living Dead" so I'm really trying to reign it in with the color...he's still not done...I MIGHT brighten him up just the slightest touch with a bit more dry brushing...and I'm going to add a bit of glossy gore to him...28mm...from Reaper Miniatures
  20. I speed painted these zombies probably a month ago, I just haven't been in the mood to take pictures or hobby since I finished 'em. Well, I had a pretty good day yesterday, and I think my mojo might be back, so you get some pictures. I think I spent about 7 hours on them as a group, and they're painted to a tabletop level. Thanks for looking.
  21. Hi, I'm pleased to share this awesome kickstarter from Cryptozoic, The Walking Dead: No Sanctuary. It's based off the AMC series The Walking Dead. I apologize I should have posted this sooner, just been very busy. But there are still 5 days left to join, and I think it's totally worth it! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cze/the-walking-dead-no-sanctuary The game design looks intriguing, designed by brothers Adam and Brady Sadler. The figures are exceptional, very finely detailed and sculpted by Stephan. I was really impressed how well they came out. I was asked to paint some of the masters for Cryptozoic for their booths at San Diego Comic Con and Gen Con 2016. As a huge fan of the series both on AMC and in graphic novel incarnation, this is a really exciting project! Also check it out, this is so cool! The very talented actors Andrew Lincoln (Rick) and Norman Reedus (Daryl), with two of the miniatures I painted! I believe they were gifted the ones with the larger clear bases. How totally awesome of them is that? I can die happy now :) https://twitter.com/cryptozoic/status/756988054590533632 I posted some photos I took of the miniatures I painted here: http://minicreatures.blogspot.com/ Come join an awesome kckstarter!
  22. I like to speed-paint. This past year, I spent a lot more time on other projects and didn't do much painting, but I got in a few rounds of speed-painting at KublaCon (in May) and at Origins (in June). I don't know why I didn't post these photos months ago, but here they are now. At KublaCon, the speed-painters get to use sets of about 30 little plastic pots of craft paint, like you might find in a paint-by numbers kit -- joined in rows of sprue with flip-off lids, and all set into a routed piece of plywood. I don't know who makes the paints. The range of colors is pretty good, but some colors just don't cover well. KublaCon first qualifying round: big medieval zombie. 45 minutes. Man, was I rusty. I didn't have a strong idea about the colors, other than green skin, for whatever reason. David Diamondstone was in this heat with me, and he won. He pointed out that my paint-job was too clean for a zombie, and he was right. His version had more dirt and blood. I stole that for my next figure. (David has won the KublaCon painting contest, and gold medals and Sophie Trophies at ReaperCon. Check out his work in the ReaperCon galleries if you haven't already.) I painted a second coat of black around the edge of the base. KublaCon second qualifying round: modern zombie. 45 minutes. Win! It had less surface area than the first zombie, which meant more time per square millimeter and a more deliberate paint job. I had a better plan for the skin -- deep purple shadows, then green-and-pale highlights, plus zombie-riffic blood and bone -- then thought about the rest of the colors while my hand was putting on that paint. I also painted a second coat of black around the edge of the base. I couldn't attend the final round of speed-painting because I was running a game at that time. Three weeks later, at Origins, Reaper's own LadyStorm was running the speed-painting tournament. The paints were a 12 Reaper paints (black, white, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, Tanned Skin, silver, gold, and ... I don't remember the 12th color). Origins qualifying round: a Bones sci-fi trooper. Small and simple. 45 minutes. Win! Three lines of freehand on the chest make for a basic rank insignia. I haven't done any more painting on him beyond those 45 minutes. Origins semi-final round: Bones deva (#77363). 45 minutes, maybe 50. We all thought it was a cruel joke to give us such a big figure. Cruel yes, but no joke. Still... win! I got at least one coat of paint on almost every surface. (Those few feathers behind the shield eluded me. Because this was the flexible Bones plastic, I could pull the wings back to paint their inner surfaces.) I started with the wings: brown at the base and wet-blended to Tanned Skin. If you squint hard enough, they actually look OK. I chose the aqua-green skin and yellow-gold sword to fit the image of a planetar angel from D&D. I haven't done any extra painting on this one, either, but I'm wondering how much better it would look after another 45 minutes! Final Round: we had our choice of 2 figures -- a bigger hippo-man or a smaller rhino-man. Both will be part of the Bones 3 release. 60 minutes. I chose the hippo because I had a vision of the gray and brown-pink skin gradations, but I couldn't do them as smoothly as I imagined. Not a win, but still fun. I think his big mouth and teeth turned out well, and his bright tropical fruits look yummy. No further painting on him. Thanks for looking. Derek
  23. I refer to these two as "Mullet" and "Bub". I used Bronzed Skin with a wash of Druchii Violet highlighted with Bronzed Highlight which I really liked the results of. Bub's clothing was Vallejo German Field Grey and Luftwafe Uniform WW2, as I hadn't used those for anything yet and wanted to try them out. I discovered that after putting the Vallejo Matt Varnish on them that what once was dull is now glossy.
  24. In an odd coincidence that I swear I had nothing to do with, the passing of George Romero coincides with my finally completing a set of 77342, Zombies, from the second Bones Kickstarter. I thought it might be nice if people painted (and shared) zombies, to honor the life of a man who changed horror movies forever.
  25. So I thought I'd try out Army Painter's Strong Quickshade on a couple of KS 1 Zombies. I painted the one on the Right 1st with RMS Ghost White and Snow Shadow mix then 2 highlights. Then i decided to paint the other 2 with just a base coat to see how it went. Left one is RMS Moldy Skin and center one is Vampiric skin. Next was a treatment of the AP Quickshade, followed by a touch up with the base skin tone. I then went a step higher with a base coat and off-white mix. I then gave them the roughly the same pants color and attempted glowing eyes. I've already decided to go with moldy skin as the walker color for my zombicide BP. I wanted to see how they looked as alternative color for my runner's to make them stand out a bit more. The longest part of the process was the wait time for the Quickshade and sealer to dry. Still need to bloody them up.
