Hordes of Things Jabberwocky Roving the Streets ~ Daughter's Christmas Gift ~ Okay, so I started painting this shortly after I gave it to my daughter for Christmas ... 2014. You can read the WIP. He languished in a box, in my kit, on and off for the last two years. A while back I pulled him out and applied a new paint, Scale 75 Amethyst Alchemy, as a wash over his already green and purple body to give him a metallic look and feel. And now in my recent kick to clear some Shelf of shame Space, I have FINISHED this Jabberwocky. Whew. Just in time to "re-gift" it to her. Here's what went into this bad boy... The only thing I don't care for on this mini was the sculptor's treatment of the claws. They were kind of armor-like and didn't quite fit in with the overall esthetic of the mini. Here's "Wocky" ... As I stated in the WIP & Show Off of the Jabberwocky for my daughter's birthday some time ago, she's a nutter for all things Alice, especially the Jabberwocky. So, for Christmas, I am putting together and painting the one from Hordes of Things. It's 15mm scale so it's smaller than our normal game play minis but it's really for her shelf at home. Example Image from Hordes of Things: At first I was pleased that the company left such nice pinning stems from the pieces. I soon learned that they don't hold up ... AT ALL. Grumble. Here he is in the package: Those "pins" are nearly a half inch long for the arms and wings. I cleaned it all up and filed what little mold lines there are. Here's a shot of the wing: The integral base was round. Nice and smooth but round. So, I lopped off segments of it to make "right" angles so I could blend it in to the base with some cobblestones on it using a Happy Seppuku stamp. Here's the stamp applied to one of my tile bases. with a cut away for the jabber's base: And here it is with the Jabberwocky sitting in place: I might file/cut some cobblestone lines into the base to break it up but with the straight lines and some paint, it's not as noticeable as the round. You can see I added the right arm. I had to pin it after the integral pin snapped. I used a green stuff ring to better fill the connection to the head (not shown but done). I added taller cobblestones to the existing ones once the first stamp was somewhat less pliable. I'll file them down some more so they just slightly raised. Irregularities improve perception in my opinion. Tomorrow I will clean up the edges of the cobblestone with some more around the outside edge using a brick edging stamp from HS or just trim the edges straight. More photos tomorrow after Paint Day.

From my Through the Looking Glass WIP thread I bring you Steampunk Alice:- Decent photography continues to elude me Had super elaborate basing plans for this one, but they fell apart mainly because I was too cheap to buy a tiny mirror or frame (they probably would've fallen apart any ways, but I will never know now). So I fell back on my usual cork based ruins, though hopefully the chessboard pattern gives off enough Wonderland vibes. On the plus side, I'm really pleased with her hair and I didn't do too terrible a job painting her apron white. As always, any comments or criticisms are most appreciated.

This is my Alice vs. Wonderland diorama I entered in my local con. It took third in diorama/vignette. I don't have a big enough photo setup for the whole thing so please excuse the pics. I was trying a reimagining of the classic tale with Alice and some Wonderland characters as badasses. Alice is 14311: Kassandra of the Blade. The Cheshire Cat is 02480: Sabertooth Tiger and the White Rabbit is a Darksword Rabbit Warrior. I sculpted the rabbit's watch and the paintbrush. The wickets are staples and the croquet balls are pin heads. The cards were downloaded, then printed, cut out and glued together. I wanted each to die in a unique way, appropriate to the characters. The base was made and stained in my school's woodshop. (I teach) I loved building this! My first big diorama. Your comments and critiques are welcome as always.

Okay, Leanne ... TURN AROUND AND LEAVE THIS TOPIC. J/K. She's not on the forums. I think. Anyway, the Jabberwocky in question is not the Bones Jabberwock from the Kickstarter. Those disappointed may want to stick around anyway. Feel free to comment or point and snicker. Here it is: I got this on the holiday clearance sale at FRP Games last December. The manufacturer: As you can see I already pulled it out and played with it a bit to see how it assembles and what shape it's in. Overall it's a stout figure with the caricature wings and a fairly standard jabberwocky face. The legs were askew from the blister so after some careful adjusting I managed to get it close to where it will stand on it's own. Sadly it was rather boring looking as it was kind of head down. Sorry, I was working on this in between getting home from work and dinner out with the family so I forgot the unpackaging and initial setup shots. So, after getting him set, I picked out a piece of slate for him that was big enough for his base and the figure. Then I figured out where I would attach him to the base. Marked the stone with pencil. Then pinned his foot. Measuring where the pin was, I drilled a hole through the slate with a masonry bit. I wanted to dress up his base and angle him up a bit on the rock so he's looking more level without manhandling his head up and then trying to angle it forward. The base included is a large, slotted, lipped round. I covered the slot with a little tape, put down the smaller piece of slate with some superglue, filled the lip with black ballast and brought it to the edge of the first piece of slate. Then after lining up the larger piece of slate with the hole, I added superglue to the smaller slate edge and the lip at the other end. I filled in the open space formed by the angled pieces with more black ballast. As you can see, the smallest masonry bit is too large for the pin so I added some green stuff and smoothed it out. In this instance, I don't plan to paint the base at all. I like the look of it and it's not a gaming piece. It will get sprayed at the end with sealer and Dullcote. Once I had the base assembled and things set where they should be, I didn't like how his feet were placed on the rock and wanted to adjust it a little. So I put some green stuff on while holding it to the rock and molded it into more of a heel. I intentionally left it a bit larger then I think the end result will be so I can sand it back. Here he is resting in on the base from both sides: Later tonight I will attach his wings. His heels needed time to cure a bit so I don't mess them up while working on his wings. Tomorrow I sand the green stuff out and prime him. For a paint scheme I was thinking of pink-purple on the belly around to purple-green on top and the back ridges blackened purple with some pink-purple around the mouth from under his chin and the top armored portion of his face being the purple-green. Or a reverse of that. We'll see. I have until Friday evening to finish it. Earlier if I plan to wrap it. LOL .
