I speed painted Solar this evening. He's looking quite red... I think once all the washes have fully dried I will evaluate how to get small bits of contrasting colour in there. He's going into my fantasy Greek army and having a desert/grass base with white stone like the rest of that army should help.

Took about 10 months, but she's done. Inspired by the box art by Lan Studios and a similar one by Miguel Sousa. I tried to give a faint hint of hope to her by changing the above-lighting. Figure is Amitriel by Karol Rudyk.

I feel that there’s little reason to deny that the primarch miniatures that Forge World has released are some of the best minis ever sculpted for Games Workshop. Unfortunately, I lost the pictures we took of the first primarch I had the opportunity to paint, but I got good pictures of this one. This is Sanguinius, one of the most powerful and loyal of primarch, despite his rather obvious mutation.

Sometimes when I imagine the mechanics of monster summoning, it's kind of like Uber or Lyft. You select a particular summoning option, and someone picks up the call without really knowing what the mission will be. Anyway, we needed an angel. Our prayers were answered, but apparently this one was on the way to the Celestial Daycare, or maybe had just completed another summoning gig involving orphans when she showed up for this gig. I can imagine any number of ways this could have gone. But in any case, this one arrived with a baby, and without a nose. She fight off our enemies with only one hand and without any olfactory senses. It was truly impressive!

Here are a pair of figures I brought to ReaperCon. The Angel got a Silver Medal in the Painters. I had never painted anything like a mural or 2-dimensional before so I took a chance on trying something fun and inventive with Wyrmgear.

SonOfCheese mentioned offhand that I would have to be "insane" to try to blend Cyan to Yellow, so I took this as a challenge. :-) Being Celestial and all, the Solar (IMHO) should have brightly colored wings. I dithered on what to do with his sword. I wasn't too keen on the sword being just a sword, so I ventured into a little bit of OSL with it. Suggestions/comments/criticism appreciated if you have it, as this is uncertain territory for me :-D I did not want his MeatClaws(tm) to glow, because that would damage the delicate flavor of any celestial barbecue he chose to make with them.

I printed this model in resin at 0.05mm layer height. Didn’t really turn out as well as I hoped, my lack of skill and weak facial features didn’t help. Might revisit at some point. They can’t all be winner!

I'm really happy with this one. 3D render by John Popson, cast by Effincool Miniatures. This will be available next weekend at GaryCon in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Here is my next project I'm trying to focus on while filling in with the hill giant. This is a birthday present for a friend. I'm thinking of going for a dark angel look with reds, purples and blacks. I'll attach the wings after I get most of the upper portion painted up.

This is Talespinner's fault. And also OneBoot's idea. (In another thread Talespinner challenged people to try something that was new —to them— and then Oneboot mentioned OSL and this specific model.) So, I acquired one 77364 on Saturday. Then I headed into the paint area to make a start. At that point "a idea flew into my funnel" after I spotted newish bottles of Blue Liner and Black Primer. These paints got mixed... ...FOR SCIENCE!™ The other part of the idea was to prime the mini with this inky dark mixture (roughly 50/50 Blue Liner/Black Primer**) where the lantern light could not reach. I Probably worked too fast. I am thinking the back of her head should be all inky as well. The pizza happened later. **That made a nice rich black. Next: there will be a sword swap.

So for the get to know you thread I said I was going to try painting the deva with interference paint. I started with adamantium black as a base coat. Then I used red interference over the top for the skirt. Blue for the armor and wing tips And purple on the wings. When it dried I washed adamantium over the top because the interference likes to settle too thickly in the crevasses even why dry brushed on. I also played with using a little silver to highlight the skin, and to make stars. I still am trying to figure out how I can edge highlight brighter with the interference.

I painted up some angels, this is the first time I've painted feathers that I can recall. This is also my first attempt at painting marble. My eyes are slowly getting better. I started this figure to show a friend how I approached painting skin. The figure is produced by Milosh's Miniatures (basically a guy's side project to make miniatures he likes... you can find him on facebook) and comes in 54mm and 75mm versions. This is the 54mm version. Instead of painting her as the traditional 'good' angel, I thought I'd do a fallen angel version. My normal skin mix was changed to create what you see here. The shadows are a mix of ~50% Chestnut Brown, 25% Rosy Shadow, and 25% Burgundy Wine. For the darkest shadows (under the legs, chin, etc), I just added more Burgundy Wine to that mix. The mid tone is 50/50 Rosy Shadow and Vampiric Shadow. To create the highlights I used 75% Vampiric Skin and 25% Fair Skin. Then just a bit of Vampiric Highlight for the top highlights. I still plan to go over the skin with some blue and purple glazes (in a few spots), but that will wait until after I finish the rest of the figure

So, was bored and wanted to paint something to take along for my GenCon trip as a Prize for some DDM Guild events. So, I saw the Planetar from the most recent DDM set and thought, it had a cool pose and a bad paintjob! So I decided to try and fix that. The Wings look a lot better in person. Also, whoever thought that style of Flying Post was a good idea should most likely be fired and never allowed to be in change of miniature anything ever again! Took about an hour and a half to paint it. GF

Here is my Angel of Shadows I attempted OSL (eventually I'll get it right), but I'm fairly happy with her. Skin is Reaper's Dusky Skin Triad, hair is white with blue ink then drybrushed with a silver + extremely pale blue, wings are metallic drybrushed over VMC German Grey, and the white is a buildup from bonewhite up to pure white. The basing is from the Happy Seppuku stamps, one side the grass, the other side the broken wasteland, with the purple flower being from the Jungle Vines stamp. Color commentary and general thrown pottery welcome. I know the OSL is a bit too strong (any suggestions?).

So.. finally getting started on this.. don't know the full direction yet... I'll get better pictures as I go..

Some of you may remember that last December I converted an extra Darkrasp figure, that I had traded for back in 2013, into a Santa Claus themed wizard figure. Well, this week I finally got around to painting the original Darkrasp, Evil Priest, figure that came in the Dark Heroes set from my original Kickstarter pledge; and once again I did a conversion. A bit of train of thought now... As I looked at this figure and pondered how to paint it, I considered how most of the painted examples of this figure that I have seen have been done up in dark colors: black, grey, brown; and I decided that I wanted to do something different. So, I thought about light colors, and immediately I thought, "How about white?". As I considered white, I thought that with his flowing robes white would make him look almost like an angel; which led me to think that, well, if he was an angel then he'd be The Angel of Death, which would be kind of be a cool figure. If I was going to sell the angel idea he would need wings though; and where would I get wings? So I started pawing through my unpainted Bones collection, remembering that the Lesser Demons set had a bunch of winged figures in it. And, voila! I found what I thought would be the perfect set of wings there among the Lesser Demons: The Vulture Demon I was able to pry the wings off the figure, and I held them up against the Darkrasp figure to see how they looked. I couldn't believe what a perfect match they were! Not only did they seem the perfect size, and were feather covered; but they also mirrored the symmetry of the figure with the left wing raised like the left arm, and the right wing extended to match the position of the scythe. So, I used my Dremel with a small drill bit to cut a slot in Darkrasp's back, and glued the wings in place with Gorilla Superglue. ​And here's the painted result. I really like how this conversion turned out. I think he makes for a very formidable angel, and I think the all-white paint job looks really good on the figure. Originally she was just a test case for OSL off the lantern and spear blade. I then tried using some interference paints to see if they'd work better, and, well... they took over the piece. So dynamic lighting yes, OSL not really. But it's interesting how with interference paints, you can paint highlights that only show up when light strikes them from a specific angle, usually roughly back towards the light source, which for minis, tends to be just above the viewing position. Also of note, my camera was going insane trying to photograph this. I don't think it likes light reflecting off the mica straight into the sensor.

This is Dark Sword Miniatures Harbinger, Female Angel (SKU 7605) that I got as part of the Dark Sword Stephanie Law Kickstarter. A beautiful figure, sculped by Patrick Keith.

Mini appears to be this guy. I was going for a kind of unearthly celestial glow with him, though it came out really strangely in the hair. Still, fun to paint :-) Update: I didn't like how his base looked. Although it was transparent, it didn't give the illusion of floating, so I added some "clouds", which is closer to what I wanted, but still doesn't quite give the flying illusion. :-/ If anyone has any suggestions on how I can make him look more like he's flying, I'm all ears :-) Thanks!

A bit of work on my massive backlog of Bones, while I consider how I want to base Excelsy. Couldn't resist doing a little bit of conversion work. Anyways, dual source strong OSL is kicking my tail, and also color identity is almost completely gone. I might knock it back to weak OSL just so I can splash more color into the mini. And also so I can do the sheer fabric effects that I wanted to paint. Sheer fabric is always fun to do.

My first finished piece with some minor OSL, made as a gift for a very dear friend of mine. The head of this otherwise beautiful bones miniature had some casting flaws, so I swapped her head with a cast copy of a Kingdom Death Sunstalker dancer Pin-up miniature. Any critique is very much appreciated, since I just want to learn and keep getting better with miniature painting.
