  1. Been a long time since I painted a mini but I finally got back to it and painted Errtu to an ok tabletop quality.
  2. Hey all! I have been working on the Narglauth for the last few months. My target was a 5e representative Balor, so a fire whip with a lightning sword. WiP thread: https://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/90572-narglauth-challenge-set-for-fire-whip-lightning-sword/ The Narglauth comes with a fire sword however, so I swapped it with the Agramon sword. I'm pretty happy with the results!
  3. I recently (not really recently...) backed the new Blood Rage Digital kickstarter. I've had my eyes on the game for some time but didn't want to buy it without the plastic tokens, so when the kickstarter came along I jumped on board. While waiting for the extras I'm planning to buy the core game and get it painted. With one of the pieces being the Fire Giant I want to enhance the base with some fire effects (lava or the like). But I needed something to practice on. Balor became that something. Or the base at first. Then I just had to finish it. I had higher hopes when I started but I don't have the patience for lager miniatures, so I ended up cutting as many corners as I could. All and all it did end up better than I thought it would.
  4. Wait, D&D doesn't stand for Demons, Demons, and More Demons: The Party's Screwed? Two lovely to paint fellows from Bones 2 were finished last night, the Fire Demon/Balor and the Minotaur Demon Lord. I tried to do both up to also fit in a Khorne demon army.
  5. I'm painting an oldie but a goodie, the Demon from grenadier 5002. I havent found any finished paint jobs of this that impressed, if anyone has one I'd love to see it. I decided to use the cover of the box (screenshot included)as inspiration and try blending, washes, and highlights. I would NMM his sword but I can't figure out how to shade a surface with this many angles yet, so I went with the flame idea. His offhand should be holding a whip, but I decided it was another chance to work on blending and it looks better than a brown leather whip there. Process and paints on the blending Primed with citadel black Blending: Made a 4:4:1 wash of vallejo retarder medium/water/citadel khorne red (this looks to me like skim milk) Used this wash very lightly probably 8 - 10 times on the top of wings, stroking from the bottom to top (I thought this was probably the best blend work on this mini?) Repeated this process for the sword using citadel khorne red, troll slayer orange, flash glitz yellow, and vallejo white grey, reverse for the whip. I painted the green with citadel kharloc green, highlighted it with citadel warboss green. The fur I painted with khorne red and troll slayer blended, then dry brushed with troll slayer. The sword handle I dry brushed with Citadel chainmail I liberally washed the entire figure except the sword with citadel nuln oil. Questions that I ran into so far: How do I darken or lighten a red? If I add black it turns purple, If I add white it turns into pink. How do I darken an orange? Similar problems. Is washing with black the right idea? When I bought paints at the FLGS here in the bay area, it was suggested that I buy agrax earthshade, which is brown. I've also found some devlan mud because everyone online seems to rave about it. Also brown...What gives? How do you NMM a horizontal curved surface like this sword? Is this a technique that could be applied to a sword blended like this to add to the effect? Please your C&C is welcome.
  6. Finished the balor fire demon that my roommate got from his Bones II fulfillment that I started forever ago tonight. There are some things I could do to make him better, but honestly I'm kind of sick of looking at him and painting over him. I've never painted anything this size before. I learned quite a bit. Like that I should probably paint before assembling (which fills me with dread because I already assembled the minotaur demon and I want to paint him too). Anyway, I haven't seen many of this guy painted yet. He's a fun sculpt I think. I was going for sort of lightning runes on his sword, but I don't yet know/have the brush control/have a small enough brush to be able to pull that off. So. Blue it is for now.
  7. I've actually been working on this off and on since my roommate's Bones II fulfillment box arrived. I've never painted anything this size before. It's been daunting, honestly. I also realize I should have painted the pieces separately before I glued him together. Which brings up a question: good way to pull apart pre-assembled Bones? Some that showed up aren't glued all that well and will be a nightmare to paint assembled. I haven't found a good advice source for how to do this (though admittedly I haven't combed through here completely).
