I'm supposed to be painting HeroQuest Goblins. Which naturally means I'm painting anything else (Mystic Circle, Thing in the Well, Mumlak, and Demonic Lasher). But at least I'm painting! First up was a bit of repair. Mumlak's adze was broken when it arrived, but a quick pin later and he's almost as good as new! I should have run the knife along the tusks while I was at it. But I didn't. Night One: I wasn't sure where I was going with this guy, I was originally going to go with a dark brown for the bare flesh. But that just felt like it would be way too much brown for my taste. I eventually defaulted to the Neutral Greys triad starting at "Cloudy Grey" instead of "Stormy". I knew I'd be using the Stone Greys on the adze, so didn't want to duplicate colors. The fur got a base coat of Pure Black and a dry brush of Muddy Brown, Earth Brown, Leather Brown, and Tanned Leather. The tusks are, rather unsurprisingly, the Ivory Bone triad. The skull topper on the jug and the femur are Bone Colors, the bird skulls will be the Neutral Bone triad. Night Two: Drybrushing, so much drybrushing. Rainy Grey on top of the Cloudy Grey. Misty Grey on top of that. The finger and toe nails are solidly applied Misty Grey. The tusks have gotten the rest of the Ivory Triad. The adze got its Shadowed Stone and Stone Grey drybrushing. The bird beaks are the Golden Skin triad. I don't know if the beaks should be more yellow than the rest of the skull, but that's the way I'm doing it. The jug is getting the "Yellow Ochre" treatment. I think I'm going to use the Terran Khaki triad on the shells on the jug, although it looks halfway decent with just the liner/wash mix. I still need to figure out the cordage, earrings, and "washers" on the cordage down by the jug. And there might be a surprise or two as well. Thanks for dropping by!

This is one of the Townsfolk from the Bones 4 core set, sculpted by Bobby Jackson. I tried a couple of new things on this one. I used clears (Magenta and Phthalo Blue) and Pure White to paint the dress, and the most complicated skin recipe I’ve ever used (3 Reaper and 3 S75 paints). The face turned out pretty well, so I decided to try painting makeup for the first time - she’s a courtesan after all. Also freehanded shoulder blades. This is another mini that was meant to be a quick RCL paint job, but sort of grew legs. In retrospect I wish I’d gotten the metal version - I couldn’t do much with that seal flipper of a hand 🤣 palette with skin colors (front 2 rows):

I started these Minitaurs months ago, and wanted to paint them like the Khazra from the Diablo video games. I abandoned work on them earlier this year when I took a break from painting for health reasons. At this point I'm kinda jaded and just wanted them off my table. The leader's wrist wraps are too bright, and I might go back and add shadows to tone those down, but otherwise I'm done with these.

Blink has been sitting on my desk for months. I finally called it done on her today. There are issues, especially with the not so clean lines on the armor, but I just needed to get this done and move on. I am, however, happy enough with her face.

Back after a long-ish hiatus. I had to take a break from painting earlier this year because of some eye issues. No that I can see right again, I wanted to take a simple-ish mini to completion. I used the RCL limited palette theme for July. While the paint job on these maggots can be better, it's gratifying to be back to doing something I enjoy immensely.

Finished the Cave Spider. Inspiration image for colors (and blotter) for first image. Used a bit of Turbo Dork colorshft paint to try and get the hair shimmer that the real spider has.

This week I finished "Arakus Landarzad, Wizard" from the "Grey Beards" set in the Bones 4 Core box. I tried a couple experiments with this guy; one was using purple for the shadows on the yellow robes, and the other was using Citadel Contrast Paint to do the gem on the staff. Finally put effort into him. Had him since Bones 4. Everyone I've seen was doing Phoenixes and Birds of Prey. I went with the surprisingly brutal Blue Jay. They've been documenting slaughtering other song birds. Their preferred method is decapitation. Anyways. Here's my take on Grimtalon

These are the figures I photographed, I still have some other finished bones 4 miniatures that I will get to (probably). I really should start using matt varnish more. Beast folk They were fun to paint. One of the Mini-taurs seems to have a lot of skinned faces. not sure how I would feel about having undies like that. Giant Catfish. Or just a small one to scale. When painting it, I searched for a reference. What surprised me was the amount of catfish with a different tail anatomy. In the end I found one that nearly fit the miniature to a T. Using that photo as a reference I painted my catfish. I did take some artistic license with the eyes and with the scales on the forehead. Crocodile Minner Now I did some conversion work on this figure and painted it using oils. The conversion mostly involves the axe the original sculpt had. It was an interesting shape, that reminded me a lot of a pickaxe. So I cut off the bottom part of the axe and got a vertical pickaxe (that I was using that week). Now the bottom of the axe had a decorated pommel? While considering if I wanted to remove it, I dropped the figure. Which resulted in the pommel, and only the pommel, breaking off. I was happy with that. The pommel can also be used as a lamp in the future. Kobolds Given that I have already painted all the goblins that came with Bones 4, I was left with the Kobolds. I really like the sculpts of these kobolds, in fact I preferred them to most of the goblin sculpts. Yes, they all have eyes painted. Also, I really liked the rich red from the examples done during bones 4, so I chose red as the colour. Apes All of these were speed painted. The brown apes were done using oils, which proved quite effective for this endeavour. Meanwhile the albino ape lord was done using acrylics with a reference to an albino gorilla. Surprisingly the albino gorillas were fare more pink than expected, so it is a good thing I used a reference. Famous Monsters These were enjoyable to paint. I did some basic research on the description of Frankenstein in the books and used that (yellowish skin, blackish lips). The bride of Frankenstein does have two white lines in her hair, the photos just don't catch it. The female mummy, who looks amazingly plump for a supposedly dry mummy (more like a wet mummy, which is strange given the Egyptian themes), had only the teal finished in oils. A possessed warrior, halfling mystic and a human bandit walk into a bar. I am really happy with how the shield on the chaos knight figure came out, the key was making a weak prussian blue wash over the grey primer and then just adding glazes of different colours. Meanwhile an amusing thing happened with the halfling. I was painting it and to add a glow to the skin I used the only bright yellow I had around me at the time, an alcohol ink. I finished off the figure, finally adding eyes. I varnish the figure and don't see anything wrong until the next day. The eyes a glowing a fluorescent yellow/green. This is somewhat strange given that the yellow is not fluorescent and meant to be permanent (even though it is a dye based ink, so not sure how much I trust that). I can only assume that some dye/pigment migration occurred or that the varnish reactivated the ink, but I do like the effect (you can't really see it that well in the picture). Wyvern, the small. I was experimenting with making brown scales. In the end I do like the effect and will probably try it on a larger figure. I like how the base is a fallen statute. Snakemen I had trouble deciding what snake to paint them as, so in the end I did a combination of a couple. The black, white and dark brown was based on a cobra. the greens and yellowish browns on Inland Taipan (one of the deadliest snakes). The browns where based on the Australia brown snakes (also deadly). I also know the excuse for the boobs, but I don't really agree with it (even if I understand why it was done).

Hi All, Completionist here! At this point I've got all the SKUs for my Bones 4 Core set except 4. I'm hoping I missed them somewhere. I don't see them in the previews section or the reaper site. Pig-cart not included. The villager group from bones 4. a few may have had their own threads. this is why I didn't need the villagers of Bones5 although apparently I did add the prancing peacock KS, for just a few more people you would find in a tavern .

Stone Lurker from Bones 4 one of my favorite

Now, I have a pile of unpainted stuff. Time to reduce it by some amount. I got all of these from Bones 4, but I think that the rank and file goblins are from the previous kickstarter. Since I didn't want to play around with the poses I started experimenting with colour choices. Some classic orange, modern green, royal violet, baby pinks, icy blue and even a grey sorcerer. Some other points: Batch painted (apart from the experiments) NMM (it really teaches you much when you do it for large amounts of figures, I really love Prussian Blue and wet blending really helps in NMM) Experimented with using Vallejo spray paint: it gets somewhat tacky when it dries for a while, but that disappears when you paint over it with acrylic paint. Overall I like the detail on them, but some poses could be more generic for the rank and file goblins. In my personal the large sabre goblin is the worse of, it is a fun and interesting pose, but it only works for 1 goblin. Now the photos are not the best (it was getting dark when I got the time to take them. Plus I have yet to make a good photo shoot) Let us start with Modern Green. The right hand side goblin has one of the better NMM sabres. Currently they have a gloss varnish. Royal Violets and Baby Pinks: Both violets and pinks work. Sadly the photo for the violets didn't come out well, so you only get a top down shot of them. I also found an old metal miniature at my local hobby store, so I included them here. If anyone knows where it is from I would appreciate if you could tell me: Classic Orange: Now my favourite pose from the rank and file goblins is the spear. You can rank them up and they look like a real army! And they have a pose that works for defence, retreat and attack. The photo doesn't really do them justice Icy Blues and Grey Sorcerer: The sorcerer is a really nice sculpt. He has a nice pet spider on his back. sadly the sun was already pretty low and all other photos didn't come out well. I painted the spider as a RedBack. See a lot of them here. Armoured Goblins: they are fun, really like those sculpts. There was another armoured goblin in Bones 4 (I previously posted him). I don't think he really fits in with these as a goblin.

I've shown the Wraiths off in another thread, but the shots were run through a photo program that wanted to "correct" and "enhance" the images into complete garbage (whether I wanted it or not), so I've got some new ones for them. Some of these pictures are over-exposed, but you can actually see some of the colors on the robes now. The apes are new. They've actually been done for some time, I just never did anything with them. First, the Bar-Llgura. He's big, blue and orange, and cranky. I figure he's "dad" or "big brother" to the other two. Second, the blackback, or youth. Last, the silverback. The stars of the show: The Nagendra! The Captain and The Matriarch. I had actually wanted to avoid green and brown, but sometimes it's just right to follow the tried and true path. I was originally modelling the captain off the boomslang, but I didn't want to do all those black tips/edges. I ended up just enjoying the green and playing with the red enamel armor. The Matriarch was originally to be modeled off the taipan...but they have all these little lateral chevrons...I thought about trying to do just a straight brown line, and then decided just to keep the black head and khaki/brown body. Spear-snake and Warrior I wanted to do something unusual, and I remember the Golden Eyelash Viper, so that's what I used as inspiration for the spear-snake. It's yellow. Kind of like the name suggests. The Warrior is based off Fea's Viper. Fea's Viper will serve as the inspiration for all Nagendra Warriors. Which brings up the last two: Archer and Warrior. I started looking at spitting cobras for the archer, and if I'd found the red spitting cobra first I would have used it. But I ended up on another cobra (palawan) instead. The palawan is basically black with light brown/khaki stripes and a partial mask. I added three dots to the hood for grins and giggles. The fletching on the arrows is purple, and decoration on the bow is done in a silver/steel color. The other warrior is just like the first, except that the orange is a different shade, and I didn't put the tan on the head. Misc. Action Shots:

With spending more time at home, I have been able to start painting a bit more. I have chosen to focus primarily on the figures that will have applications across multiple scenarios that might come up at the gaming table. I decided I would try to knock out some of these types of figures that I wouldn't normally choose to paint with the limited amount of time I normally have...outside of a global pandemic. These types of figs are good practice, and frankly, it will be great to have these figs ready to add to the table for atmosphere, if nothing else. Imagine that there is an encounter in a city setting where these two watchmen are not engaged, either down the street or a block away, but still on the battle map where the players can see them, it might make the tension a bit more palpable in that the scenario the party is engaged in. They might be overheard by the authorities. They will be heard of combat breaks out. IDK. Sounds like a good theory, anyway. I sat down to paint these guys and started finding all these little details that I had missed. That, compounded by trying a new paint brand I really wasn't familiar with, they ended up taking longer than I had anticipated. Which, in hindsight, ended up being a good lesson in patience and perseverance. Despite all that. I am happy with the result. I may have misled you a bit by the title as instead of using copper for the armor metallics, I thought that Vallejo Game Color Brassy Brass was a much more impactful metallic color while still being close enough to copper to make the pun work. The tabards are just RPE Miniature Paints Dark Green which is a bit thinner than I like for a base coat, but working in layers I was able to work up to a nice dark green base and then build up the highlights from there. The highlights where built up using RPE Miniature Paints Bright Green mixed in with thr Dark Green. These guys were good practice, and I got to try some free-hand on their badges, which is just a very loose interpretation of a fleur de lis.

These guys are from the Dreadmere Expansion numbers 416, 417, and 418. I thought these guys would be nice and versatile to be used as mercenaries, a sophisticated villain's professional guard, or some sinister looking city watchmen under the employ of the even more sinister looking constable. Fun figs to paint and were nice and quick. Practice, practice, practice.

Working on a group of Bones4 mini's and the first two finished were a Rogue and the Halfling with a lamp... and gave me a story of the only barrier between the mayor of Hobbit town and a Master Assassin, is a lone night Watchmen... I finally got inspiration to do the Bones4 Flail Snail (trasher snail sku 44116). 1st pic is my inspiration on the body. The shell I had no solid plan for, I just went with it. Turned to a wetblend of many different bright colors. I love it, so excited about it! Inspiration pic: I'd love to hear your thoughts on it :)
