  1. In the month of September I was able to make headway on painting up the 7 bugbears I'd like to paint. These are a little above tabletop quality as I'm working to refine my glazing technique while still being able to crank out quality work in a more brief timeframe. I wanted each of my bugbears to appear to be of the same species while retaining their own unique skin tone. These three I finished in September. To me, Mogg has a rather "refined" or noble quality to him. I opted to have his colors reflect that, and instead of doing the white-out eyes of the other bugbears, I wanted to give him pin-pricks of white in an effort to reflect higher than average intelligence for a bugbear. Kegg on the other hand appears to be an enraged hunter, and his eyes reflect that more. The last bugbear is a metal Reaper figure I picked up as part of a pack. His flail was missing so I took the opportunity to use one of the axes I have from a Reaper weapons pack to swap it out. I like the result. All of these were painted with my Reaper round #1 brush using MSP. All lighting, shadows and other effects are painted and not tricks of photography. The front and back of Kegg's shield exemplify what I'm working toward.
  2. This is my metal Korgug. I painted him up as a Wikkawak which is a white bugbear that lives in the northern snow covered climes of the Pathfinder world. In the picture the shield shading doesn't look deep enough, but I thought it looked good in person. I may have to take snother look and perhaps give it a thin coat of my walnut ink. Also he's on a base similar to the giant I panted rather than a snow base because I intend to use him in Warlord and wanted him to have a base similar to other reven members. edit: I may have to att a little more flocking to areas to cover up where more of where I cut away his broccoli base.
  3. I'd done a Bones bugbear back just after I started painting again. At the time I tried to match him to a bugbear I'd painted years before for Chainmail. When I did him I used a lot of Partha paints. Those paints have since been passed to a friend since I'm using mostly Reaper now, with some Army Painter, P3 and Vallejo thrown in. So I decided to figure out some current colours that came close. They aren't the best pics, but I've been sick, so I'm happy I just got them finished by the end of the month. Over all they came out close enough to the originals as to look like normal variations to me. These guys are a little less orangy yellow, and there hair isn't quite as red. But I think they will do nicely. I did them all with the same colour kilt thingy as I've got two (or is it 3) more of each, so will do two more "squads" with different colours.
  4. This is a mini I got during the October special for halloween. I really like the sculpt and will be basing it once I can come up with a theme that fits.. maybe by next halloween. 01545: Punkin Bugbear. (this mini is no longer in the store .. or not that I can find) I hope you like and as awlays critiques/suggestions/virtual rotten fruit are all acceptable.
  5. 2 of these are from Bones 2 and one I bought when they first came out, prior to the kick starters. The base skin tone is Army Painter desert yellow. My photo backgrounds are all too small to handle these guys all at once, so that's just a piece of black felt.
  6. This is bugbear has been reimagined as a bugbadger. He wears the scales of a young dragon, a loincloth made from a tiger pelt, and a wolf's tail adorns his spiked club's handle. I cannot wait until my group sees this guy land on the table.
  7. Rugg, Bugbear Leader One of the Bones2 bugbears. I'm really pleased with the result. Great Worm The very popular great worm. My version doesn't hold any of the vast creativity that has been unleashed upon this model but I think it turned out quite nice despite it's "mundaness".
  8. So, I had a bad time this last Minis Exchange on the Reaper boards. I got a partner that I had no clue what to paint for them! I had no ideas, no inspiration, no anything really! It took until the week before we were supposed to send by for me to have an Idea. So here it is... So first off, I should explain a bit about this mini. Female Bugbears are not common miniatures to paint, so i had to have a reason for her to be useful for my Partner. So, I decided on this one due to Talae's interest in the Eberron D&D setting and that he said "Not All Monsters are Bad Guys". So, I though, well Maybe Not then. "Some Monsters are Bad-A$$ Girls!" So, that is were this mini comes in. I had to get a few lessons and assistance to make this Girl Bad-A$$ enough. Fortunately, My FLGS, Gatehouse Games, is run by an awesome Gamer and skilled Painter, Tim Gatehouse! So, on Tuesday the 14th of July, I arrived shortly after the store opened for painting lessons. Being his least busy day of the week, I had his help most of the day. So I made what I am sure is my best work to date. But first WiP Pics I took at Gatehouse Games during the course of the painting... First was the Wolf Skin Armor bits and the Base Coat on the Fleshy bits. Then was defining the Fleshy bits more. Finalized the Shield with wear and tear effects. Got last minute Details like her bag and Earring. And for the Perverts out there, yes she is giving you a "Panty Shot". GF
  9. For the second mini of off the shelf of shame I have another bugbear. Mogg was the same as Rugg, I got tired of painting bugbears and saved him as a test subject. His shield was a test for the Scalecolor wood paint set. Mogg isn't actually sealed yet, but I had the camera out so I went ahead posted him
  10. My August goal is to clean off my shelf of shame, or at least shrink it down some. The first mini of the month is Rugg, bugbear leader. He was started at the same time as the bugbear warriors I posted awhile back, but I ran out of steam after five bugbears and put him on the shelf. My rational was to save him as a test subject for the Scalecolor set I had in the mail and he did serve that purpose... eventually. Poor Rugg looks like he could have used another shot of dullcote before his photo shoot. The gloss is nowhere near as noticeable under ambient lighting though, so I doubt I bother with another coat just for gaming.
  11. My last Bugbear. I already painted one of these guys with the traditional color scheme, so I decided to do something a little different. Meet Qtip the albino Bugbear.
  12. I made him look a little old and beat up, and blind in one eye. Bugbears can live up to 89 years? I think?
  13. Gave him more of a red hue, to reflect his hot Irish temper. Two more bugbears to go, and they are identical. I'm thinking of making a old gray one, and an albino.
  14. When I looked at this guy compared to the rest of my bugbears I saw Angel Face from Fight Club. So I tried to give him some blonde highlights. I should have just done him in full blonde. Oh well.

  17. After taking care of the four bugbear grunts last month I had just enough energy to paint one of the bugbear heroes. They were blue so Kegg is green, which should help differentiate him on the tabletop. It's unfortunately not my best photography effort, but you get the idea.
  18. To quote from my WIP: "For my first Bones II minis I'm tackling the Bugbears. Given that they are a mainstay of d20 they should see plenty of use. For my color I went with the 2E description of "Their hide ranges from light yellow to yellow brown and their thick coarse hair ranges from brown to brick red." Now as you probably don't remember, I have never particularly cared much for the VGC Dwarf Skin & Elf Skin that I've had since my earliest painting days. I usually feel that what I end up with looks either somewhat jaundiced or a bit orange, but I own the paint and it's better to use it than for it to dry up. So for my latest attempt I'll add a couple of colors into the mix that I like, VGC Heavy Skintone and the Vallejo skin wash. Also I'll throw in a little purple in the shadows just to push them back. Even if it ends up looking somewhat inhuman I can just say that it's all natural Bugbear skin." I actually don't have any kind of lightbox big enough to photograph a group of bugbears, so here they are under one of my painting lights. I stuck them on 1" bases just so I could call them "medium" creatures if we ever use a grid again, but as you can see their stance is a little wide even for the diagonal (1.4", 35.9mm). They are all also missing one of their lower tusks, but oh well. Can't complain too much considering the price. Sadly, they all took much more than 40 minutes apiece. One of these years I'll have to learn to speedpaint.
  19. A conversion started for a barely ran 4E Essentials PC, and finished yesterday.
  20. My first two miniatures of the new year. True to form I set a few goals for the year and then pick a few miniatures with no real connection to them. Oh well... I picked these because they seemed as they where going to be a quick finish (and they were) and I mostly just wanted to be able to say that my unpainted pool is shrinking :)
  21. Ok, here are three more that I painted in the last month. More will be forthcoming, I'm putting the finishing touches on some rats, another orc, and finishing up some skaven that I started a long, long time ago. I also need to do up the half-giant hero for a game... The bugbear. Lot of good paint jobs on this guy out there, I made a conscious decision not to make the hair and beard distinct from the fur, just shaded it a bit darker: This is Garrick the Bold (Crusader with Sword and shield,) but in my Pathfinder game he's presently a 4th level Paladin named Heodin (HAY-oh-din, I'm on an Old English kick right now.) And here's one of three goblins. Comments of any kind welcome! These guys are done (unless you spot something glaring,) but I'll definitely keep any criticism in mind for the future.
  22. My progress on the mountain of bones so far. I'm most proud of the owlbear which I think is an original scheme. It's based on a barn owl. C&C welcome as always.
  23. Here's my take on the bugbear. This is my first real re-basing attempt. In the past, I have done some really minor basing onto square tiles, but I spent quite a bit more time on this one. I cut off most of the broccoli base, and glued him to a Proxie Model circular base. I used some modeling paste to fill in the base, and then various ballasts for texture. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although I learned a lot for future attempts; most notably, base a few models at the same time, should speed the process up quite a bit. This is also the first time I have tried dark lining. I saw how effective Buglips uses it in his WIP thread, so I decided to give it a try. I am undecided whether I like it or not. I used Reaper MSP Brown Liner. Very little of it actually made it through to the final product, but you can see it in a few areas. I found the base skin layer took quite a bit longer, as extra coats were required to cover up the liner that slopped over where it shouldn't. My metallics still suck. I need to figure out a method to improve them as I have yet to be very happy with any of the weapons I've done. I get a bit lost trying to figure out where to highlight on a weapon like this guy's spiked club. I've got the Bones minotaur in progress now, hopefully I can get him done before the Bones invasion lands. C&C welcome!

  25. As part of this weekend's speed painting endeavours I finished the 2nd and 3rd of my Bones Bugbears. The first one got a Back-2-Base-ix Celtic Ruins base and as I didn't want to rebase these two I gave one red trims and the other blue. Painting approach; No Undercoat Basecoat in appropriate colours, Saphire Blue, Blood Red, Oiled Leather, Russet Brown, Shadowed Steel, Mahogany Brown, Tanned Shadow. Wash the whole mini with Black Wash. Retouch the Shadowed Steel to get some sharper highlights. Apply highlights of Tanned Shadow, Tanned Flesh, Tanned Highlight to skin. Paint nails and teeth as you do the skin starting with Tanned Flesh, Tanned Highlight & final highlight with Linen White. Paint eyes with Linen White, Pure Black and outline with Mahogany Brown. Drybrush Hair areas Intense Brown. Paint base green and edge pure black, flock. Seal (to be done this evening now that I have enough models to make it worth doing). This takes about 2 hours (plus drying time) to do, adding another model or two to that process wouldn't slow it down noticeably. The slowest process is the base coat and skin just due to the paint changes and the care it takes to get paint in only particular spots.
