Large Reaper based diorama entries only. No more than 6 images per entry please. No chatter or questions, please. Use the Rules and Questions thread.

So, a local store had a painting contest - entrants drew a random number from a jar, and that number equated to a Reaper Bones mini we had two weeks to paint and got to keep. I was remarkably lucky, and got the Dracolisk, by the incomparable Julie Guthrie. Since the rules said no more than 75% of the model could be obscured, I felt somewhat open ground with some stumps and some broken statues would be best. There will be two prizes - one from customer voting, and one from Staff Judging. Wish me luck!

Neat sculpts, the next KS is going to be fun I wish Reaper's breakdown of judging criteria actually reflected how high bases score. Looking at their little percentage breakdown, you would never know that the base was so important .

It's that time of year again. Those of us in the US have a 3 day holiday weekend coming up (May 24-27) and I am challenging you all to join me in a massively multiplayer paint binge! Everyone is welcome to join, even if you can only paint for one day. The object is to finish as many figures as possible. Quantity counts over quality. All manufacturers are fair game, posting of WIPs and finished pieces is strongly encouraged. You may prep and prime figures before hand, in fact I recommend it. Get out all those new Bones, old primed or half painted figures and get ready to finish them! Got an army to finish, need to move some half painted terrain off your desk, want to tackle that dragon for the big figure contest? This is the time. All manufacturers are fair game. Prep and prime your figures now so they are all ready to go Saturday morning (or if you're taking a 4 day weekend, Friday morning). Have your camera ready to share photos. Photos strongly encouraged! For this holiday there is a special extra challenge: paint a figure in memory of a lost friend, pet or loved one. Anything goes. Painting begins at 00:01 May 24 and ends 23:59 May 27, in your time zone. Those of you who video chat are welcome to set up channels. Link to 2017 Challenge Link to 2016 Challenge

I am going to start a larger competition entry, and thought I'd make this WIP thread to help me keep a red line on the project. The task is to recreate a cover of a book or album. Nothing to post yet, except the cover which will be my inspiration for the entry. I have had it in my mind for a while, and this comp gave me an excuse to begin. Bits have been ordered, and work will commence once they arrive. :) Maybe a little sooner. ^^ As there are some things I can do right away.

Just putting this out there as I forgot about it until it was too late last year. For those who want to give a competition a shot, Battle Cry will be held in April (at the Manchester, CT Battlestandard I assume, but they did open an Auburn, MA location last year). There are several different categories, detail in the link. There is a fee to enter $10 first fig, $5 each additional entry. Best in Show qualifies for the Crystal Brush. I may just go to look at the entries. They haven't released the actual date yet, I just wanted to put it out there so if someone wanted to paint something for the competition, they would have time.

I had a brief discussion with Michael Proctor (Clever Crow) about the Open Category while we were at Genghis Con. It is was worth pointing out to everyone that your display can include pictures of your in progress work. In fact for this category I would encourage it. While we are familiar enough with Reaper miniatures to confidently figure out conversion work there are a lot of miniatures out there that we aren't familiar with. If you have pictures of the stock model (even off the manufacturer's site) and what you converted it would be of tremendous help to the judges figuring how extensive and well done your conversion work actually is. Don't forget this is also the category for scratch sculpts, so if you have been sculpting bring it down and enter it!

I received a PM some time ago about partnered entries being allowed in the competition. My gut reaction was no, but I indicated that I would discuss it with the Head Judge (Clever Crow) and I finally got around to that today. We want to be inclusive of different ways to participate in the competition so we are going to allow partnered entries starting with the 2015 competition. 1) All participants must be present when entering the competition with their mutual piece (i.e. no, "I'm going to play a game could you enter it?" shenanigans). The entry will not be accepted if all the participants are not present. 2) Its one entry so only one medal will be awarded. Even if 10 people are involved still only one medal. Additional rules may be added as we work through some of the other ramifications.

Hey, all, I had a few questions pertaining to a mini I'm painting up for the Reaper Open competition. This is my first competition, so I'm not expecting to blow away the competition, I just want to give it a shot and paint a mini to the best of my ability. A few questions, though, that I'm hoping I could get some help on. 1) I've read the ReaperCon open rules, and it looks like you just bring the mini to the competition and sign it up there. Have I missed anything? 2) Is it generally considered good or bad form to post work-in-progress shots around here (in the appropriate forum) for competition minis? I'd definitely like the feedback, but I don't know if people generally try to keep their projects a secret. (I'm not likely to be using any super-secret techniques that need hiding from the eyes of the world, of course.) 3) Do you seal competition minis? I'd be worried about ruining a nice paint job, and they're not really going to be handled much, yes? Thanks!
