  1. And another RVE leftover finished! I painted the crystals during RVE during Erin Hartwell's crystal painting class and then decided to use them as a background for the little warlord skeleton I had lying around on my shelf. While I'm happy with the overall composition of this piece a few things went wrong: The varnish on the crystals stayed tacky. While this is probably a user error on my part I'm not really happy with the overall performance of the translucent bones material (even when painting it) and I'll avoid it in the future (Bones USA looks very promising, though, and might actually be an alternative to pewter for me) I wanted to add interest to this little scene with some eerie water effects. I tried greenstuffworld's lime green water effect. To make it pop a bit more, I base coated the "deepest" part of the water with a mixture of white and MSP green goo. Turns out I greatly misjudged the opacity of the water effects and now I'm left with chalky spots beneath a somewhat unimpressive slime. Oh well, you live to learn! All in all I learned a lot painting this up, but now it will go to the back of my vitrine. I do like the skeleton, though. 😇 C&c very welcome, as always!
  2. Howdy, It is said they have healing powers... Kev! P.S. Background display by Trenton Maloney
  3. Howdy, For International Mini Painting Month I'm doing crystal... Snort it, Kev! P.S. @Iridil, It is on a piece of scatter terrain handcrafted by my good friend Trenton Maloney!
  4. My Crystal Troll finally (almost) done. Really happy with the result. As a final touch i'm gonna try som resin water pool on the forward corner of the base. The was specially swaed off for this porpuse. Anyway hope U like GRtzz
  5. Hellborn Troll On a Plane of Volcanic Glass This brute of a troll obviously has some extraplanar blood coursing through his veins. He walks the the wasteland of his abyssal home across sheets of volcanic glass that stretch unending. Dust flows around his footsteps and he holds aloft a large shard of the glass to summon his clan with his demonic power. This Warlord miniature is pretty friggin awesome and was waiting on further inspiration to get from the shelf of shame pack in to my queue. I told him no for some time. There is quite a bit of real dust ingrained with the sand on his base. But with my recent ... lets be optimistic and call it ... flood of painting he finally made it back to the fore. You can check out the WIP post to see everything I did to get him here. WIP He shall now join the ranks of his fellow giant-kin to stand against the machinations of those grievous creatures who call themselves "adventurers." Enjoy. Check him out in the Inspiration Gallery. (approved) Added to Thrym's Index of Reaper Miniatures & Thrym's General Show Off List
  6. I'm pretty happy with my Wall of Ice. The WIP is here. I tried doing the highlighting 2 different ways - I described it in the WIP - but I don't remember which is which anymore. I used a variety of inks - I'll have to get back about which ones exactly, I don't remember any more - to try and create some variety in the thickness of the ice, but it didn't work out so well. Edging was done with Reaper Ghost White. There's some happy accidents in there too where the brush slipped. If anyone's wondering, yes this is still see-through.
  7. Hi all, first Show-Off post here! Been painting since the first Bones Kickstarter but wasn't satisfied with the results enough for sharing until recently but now I'm diving in. I had a lot of fun painting all the Bones golems together/in succession. It really gave me a chance to differentiate the appearances I wanted as they developed. I gave myself the liberty to experiment a bit and created more than one version of some. For the ice golem I wanted to preserve as much of the translucency as possible as he's already a nice glacial blue, so I kinda went to town on the basing instead. I like the stone golem but it always reminds me of Frankenstein's monster. The clay golem, aka, "Do you even uplift, bro?" - I know, geology jokes . . . I needed the second one to serve as a blood golem. I really like the flesh golem because he can also double as a larger zombie at the gaming table. Finally, the battleguard golem. Makes a great warforged character or iron golem. I wanted a tarnished look on this one because let's face it - iron makes for a really poor choice for golem materials in any fantasy setting with ice sorceress's (ice sorcerese?), weather altering druids, dank caverns, etc. Feel free to provide feedback too! In addition to learning the painting itself, I'm still understanding the nuances of photographing these little monsters I built a DIY light box and have a decent non-phone digital camera but it's still finicky. For example the flesh golem appears noticeably less vibrant red in person, while the brown clay golem is actually a bit more red-brown than this image. Despite having the same backdrop, as I know that subtly changes things. Anyway, enjoy!
  8. Finished this guy in November for the resolutionary challenge and am just now getting the photos up. His base I used vivo crackle paint to make a crackling earth as if he had just broken out of it. Also used some liquitex modelling paste prior to putting the crackle paint down to add a little evenness of volume to the base and give the built-up muck around his feet as if he had just stepped into some mud. Unfortunately the vivo crackle stuff can be kind of shiny, so that's my biggest complaint was even with some drybrushing and the matte spray it still has a bit of a shineness leftover. He is mostly drybrushed a couple different grays and browns, my first attempt at crystals on him turned out okay I think. I took some better pictures of the top because I myself had a hard time figuring out where his fossilized dinosaur started/ended and had to look at a lot of different photos and didn't find one that showed the whole thing so maybe this will help the next person. Anyways, comments and criticism always appreciated, thanks!
