  1. This past week I started working on the Dark Elves set from the Bones 1 Kickstarter, and completed the Dark Elf Warrior figure with a simple tabletop paint job. As always C & C welcome.   2. This is a model I painted for someone as an anonymous gift. It should have gotten to him today, but I'll leave his forum name off just in case. This model was a lot of fun to paint and I only learned later that my model's armor and the painted version on Reaper's website (you know what I mean :)) both have purple armor. This is only the second time I've painted dark elf skin and its quite challenging for me as I often struggle to have good looking smooth skin tones on human models in general. If I hadn't given myself a hardstop time limit, I would have gone back and tried to shade and highlight the yellow on the armor. I don't think its garish, thanks to the blue cloak, but it could look better IMO. I'm extremely pleased with the blending of her ice crystal weapon "blades". I wasn't sure I could pull it off, but I think it turned out really nice, although the eye isn't immediately drawn to it. Please feel free to give any and all feedback, but I'm really keen to hear if folks think I should have gone with a darker yellow or another color entirely. Is there something I could have done better with the basing? The person I painted this for likes an online comic called Drowtales, which I also happen to like, though I'd not read it in at least two years due to losing all my links when my old computer died. But I went through the comic and found some armor and cloaks that I liked and tried to work them into model itself.   3. I have two of her. She is actually an aranea ranger in humanoid form in my game. Not perfect. But good for my purposes.
  4. Here is the dark elf version. The other one I did was for a player. I wanted this one for an NPC.
  5. On this one, I did TMM and tried to shade the metal using clockwork brass with black, followed by P3 rhunic gold, followed by P3 true gold, then a small Vallejo ice yellow dot. I know my skill level only allows so much, but I'm looking for suggestions on highlighting or shading or anything that will be helpful. I tried for a suntan darker flesh tone. This mini was given to me to paint after it had been glued together, primed thick black and no mold lines removed. I tried to get some of the lines, but couldn't get all of them. This is a PC in my game so I want it to look nice. I ordered another one that I'm going to make a dark elf. Unfortunately, I see my photos didn't turn out well at all, Its probably going to be near impossible for anyone to really see the shading and highlights to make suggestions. I'm sorry for that... heck, I even put freckles on her! grrrrrr After a cup of coffee this morning I retook a few shots and replaced the old.
  6. Another bones 2 mini, selected for no reason other than it looked cool when I was washing off the bones. I'm not a fan of dark elves as RPG characters, I don't much like their bit. And bizarrely they just look so much better than normal elves. So, light blue and glow eyes it is.
  7. This was a quick tabletop paint job for a friend who is playing an elf mage in a DnD campaign. I was worried about how it would look finished as there are quite a few areas that were miscast such as the hands and the metal areas of the armor. This was also the first time trying a new light set up for photos. Any input would be appreciated.

It felt like painting something out of my childhood with this (I'll confess to being really into the whole Drow thing for a while for the very, very obvious reason): This was my second Bones piece (I painted one of the IMEF guys for my brother, as he thinks it's cool I'm painting and is supporting my whimsy and wanted some space marines as he's a huge Mass Effect fan; still have another to do). It really seems to paint differently than the metal, but maybe I'm just imagining it. I'm following the general guidelines I see for them, but anyway. Could NOT find one of these painted to give me ideas, and I kind of had a hard time telling where her top ended, neckline-wise. So did some ballparking there. Turned out purpler than I'd've liked, maybe--I want to work on mixing a grayer shade for the base coast before I do any more dark elves (I have the male arachnid, the queen, some others. Yay)--but I was kind of happy wth my highlights. Still working to brighter brighter brighter them. But I had a lot of fun. And it totally creeps my wife out. So there's that. As always, advice for improving, her or especially in general, is totally appreciated.
  9. After a long break from painting minis, I got back to the workbench early this month. I've completed 3, just to shake the rust off my already weak skills. Encouraged by making some progress and starting to enjoy painting again, I started work on Carinth, a Reaper Dark Elf sitting incomplete for a couple of years. She was originally intended for a contest entry, but now I'd just like to figure out the lighting challenges, experiment with this two-model method, learn some new things and generally improve. The 'two model method' is an idea that has been around for a while, but given the cost of most minis these days, is understandably not a popular technique. With a comparatively cheap, older model, I can give it a shot. The idea is to use one for practice, to work out the problems and make mistakes. The other is for a better attempt, working at perfekt. :-) The design/story: Drow priestess in a deep cavern, protected by magic glowing staff, dips her magic sword in lava to imbue it with greater power. Challenges: I've not done a lava base before now, and it seems there are now 4 light sources at work on this mini. Ambient/overhead is somewhat weak, but present; lava flowing in several spots in the base will give some under-lighting; the top of her staff will be glowing blue/white; the sword has a blob of lava dripping from it. First up is the "better" version we'll call Carinth-A. Next is Carinth-B, the draft version where I got rather ahead of myself in playing around with lighting effects: Comments, critiquesm questions and suggestions are all welcome, here. I want to improve, so chime in, please!

Lysette (sounds like Norwegian "Lyset" literally "The Light") became Murkette (sounds like Norwegian "Mørket" literally "The Darkness"), and my entry for the Bones Beauty Pageant 2013 found her direction! Murkette To’ken represents the Beneathdark in the Beauty Pageant, being the official Miss Beneathdark and sole survivor of the preliminaty Beneathdark pageants. The other contestants mysteriously suffering strange, and completely unrelated, series of accidents and illnesses. Several dying of natural causes (coming down with particulary violent cases of the stabbings). Indeed the whole contingent of Bathalian contestants accidentally got redirected to the delivery entrance of the kitchens, ending up being served as appetizers at the judges’ banquet. Hailing from the dark city of M’anzan, Murkette orphaned herself at an early age, and is now travelling the world. Presenter: “Murkette, you have put student as you current occupation. Please tell the audience, what have you been studying?” Murkette: “I have been studying where the tunnels from Beneathdark come closest to the judges’ homes.” Presenter: “Um…right. What you would change about yourself and why? Murkette: “About myself? Nothing. I am confident the judges will make the right choice and not get dragged away in the night to be sacrificed on dark altars in the deep places of the world.” Presenter (visibly sweating): “uhh…is that a live spider in your hair?” Murkette: “No, it is an avatar of my Goddess, you unctuous little toad.” Presenter: “Next contestant please!”
  12. Here is my latest. I had this one based and primed sitting on my table since spring of last year and just now got around to painting her. I tried a few color schemes before settling on this one. The photos were taken prior to adding a few brighter highlights to her skin, but other than that, this is pretty much how she looks finished. This was one of the toughest sculpts I have painted for some reason, but I am happy with the end results. This figure proves that I still have some areas of blending technique that I need to master. All in all though, not a bad miniature for one that is going for sale on eBay. Some of you all might think it strange that I really do not collect or display my own miniatures, but either sell them all on eBay, paint them for commission, give them as gifts or painted for the forum exchanges. The only miniatures I have on my display shelf are ones received in exchanges form other Reaper members. Since I do not game anymore and I already have collected way too much stuff over the years, I figure that I have the photos for memories or a portfolio, so I am good. C&C welcome.
  13. ... but not painted as a Dark Elf. It was hard to keep her and her associate in focus together, so forgive the pictures please. It took me a while to figure out what to do with these two but I was happy with the results. A very dramatic combo! Makes me wonder if skeleto ever gets a lunch break.   14. Here's a figure that I painted in the last week: Liela, the sorceress for the Darkreach dark elves, from Warlord's Savage North. Besides my usual palette for dark elves -- Volcano Brown skin, Deep Amethyst metals, Brown Liner ("black") leather and cloth -- I also used Surf Aqua and Sky Blue to get some icy tones. Her eyes are a softer pink than the orange or red that I've used on other dark elves. Her staff is in bone colors, with some scribbled painted-on texture. For the snow, I used the same technique that I made up for the dwarven King Axehelm figure: Deep Amethyst, Sky Blue, and Pure White for the snow, and simulations of reflected light on the undersides of some objects using Sky Blue and Pure White.
