I’ll be painting Deathsleet. My rolls are: Thats 16 (or possibly 91), 8, and 6. Cloudy Gray, True Blue, and Brilliant Green. Orders will be placed soon!

Welcome to my 12 hour dragon challenge, loosely based on Professir Buglips original 7 day challenges. Why only 12 hours you might say? Well, there appear to be quite a few of us who have difficulty stitching together two, much less seven, days of consecutive painting sessions. Therefore, I'm trying to pathfind a challenge that fits for the more time deficient among us! If you don't know what in the world I'm talking about, you need to check out the latest one to accept the challenge, OneBoot's Crazy Too Kaladrax WIP. The goblin's challenge is to paint a large centerpiece figure (Kaladrax, Dragons Don't Share 2, etc) in seven calender days. There are several rules that go with it, which you can read in the WIP linked. Since this is a different challenge, a few twists are in order. So, my rules for the 12 hour dragon challenge are: 1) No using a brush larger than a standard size 0. The Professir is going to codify this shortly, but roughly 10mm long is all you get. 2) The brush you select is the ONLY thing that is allowed to apply paint to the figure. This means just one brush! Dry brush, if you dare. 3) You have only a straight 12 hours from the start of the challenge to finish. Any breaks, meals, family outings take away from that time. Plan ahead. 4) The only prep that is allowed beforehand is boiling and setting the figure (if in Bones), fit checking the parts, pinning the legs if needed, and making accomodations on the base by drilling holes for the pins. No mold lines may be removed, no primer applied, no gaps filled, and no other work on the base is allowed. 5) Paint must be applied by only the brush bristles. No finger painting or using the handle of the brush to dot the eyes. 6) Brush may not be altered, other than from normal use. And bristles that fall out are excluded from eligibility. 7) Single painter only, no teaming up with someone to work in shifts. 8) The figure must have pigmented paint on all visible surfaces, less minor, incidental gaps where it is joined or based. It's a bit of a large set of rules, but I've been trying to find ways to "cheat" at Buglips' challenge for a while, so I've had time to think about it. I was thinking about Livestreaming on YouTube, but I think I may skip that. If there's interest, I did manage to figure it out. I have to cut it up in several blocks, and there's no point in filming me eat lunch or dinner. But let's start with the beginning picture, and then I'll see you at Monday, 5/30, at 8am (Mountain time) for the start of the challenge.

So last winter I painted up some Reaper dragons. I thought about submitting them to the Reaper 3rd Annual Large Model Paint Challenge, but I was somehow dissatisfied. They were painted, but a little ... lacking. Also they had a tendency to tip over one way or another. For the most part, until now I haven't based. At the most I glue minis to pennies or fender washers and paint them illusionistically. But there's a first time for everything, and this time I wished to base these dragons. I started with the two smaller dragons, the fire dragon and shadow dragon. I traced them and drew contour maps for a layer or two of foam core board. I figured I'd try the lowest layer as a shape of bristol illustration board, something I had lying around, and I would glue them together and contour the shapes with epoxy. Here are the foam core shapes traced onto the board. And cut out with their pattern pieces; the bristol board too (at the top).

Here is Bones Deathsleet. I fixed the ankle issue by pinning through the Bones Barrel into the base. He isn't going anywhere now.

So. I tried painting some minis without WIPs and found myself having a hard time keeping track of what and how much I had done. So I'm back, although these may be sporadic and really slow to update. We'll see. Anyhow, after painting a lot of tiny figures for the January Bones Beauty Pageant, I decided to move in the opposite direction and tackle some of the big figures from Bones I to clear out room for Bones II. So I am painting dragons. Five of them, if you count the Frost Wyrm. Each one gets its own thread, though, since I don't know how I'm going to progress through them. First up is Deathsleet, which I am thinking of painting in iridescent colors over a black underpainting. I was inspired by this beautiful version of Reaper's gryphon. First, I primed the figure with Reaper's Brown Liner, which as has been discovered, makes a fantastic first layer on Bones figures (I am keeping the wings separate for ease of painting). Then I painted the figure black. The other dragons I'm painting concurrently are Ebonwrath, the Fire Dragon, the Shadow Dragon, and the Frost Wyrm. Stay tuned.

Alright. I painted up Deathsleet. Got a new camera. So you all get to see some hopefully better pictures of him. At least I hope they look better. I have to agree that it is difficult to photograph white

Ok so I've started on one of the bigger dragons amongst all the smaller stuff that I've been working on as well (like skeletons mostly) and figured I might as well put up an Open WIP thread for him. At this stage I've assembled and removed the mould lines I saw with a mix of hobby knife and file. I noticed a couple of extras when I was putting the base coat on, but none of those are problematic enough for me to go back in with knife and file again to remove. I then glued him to a bit of cork. I then glued the cork to a 50mm square base (resin blank in this case, but plastic would do just fine as well), and because Deathsleet likes to lean forward and touch his toes with his forearms I glued the tip of his tail to the resin and cork with the help of a little boiling to get it flexible enough. This results in a dragon that is happy to stand proud. Gaps around the wings are filled with (Atelier) Moulding Paste (available in various brands from art suppliers for far less than GW charges for liquid greenstuff), you can see this on the base as well covering the join between his "broccoli" bases and the cork. Then I got out the LED blue and slathered it on. I'm still not certain what I'm going to do with the belly so it was left plain Bones. I'm not too concerned about the obvious brush strokes in the wings or the inconsistencies in the scales at this time. This colour is essentially the "deepest shadows" and so I'll be going over the whole model with drubrushing and so on as I work up to the mostly white dragon. One thing I'll note at this time is most art of white dragons actually uses grey as the base colour (stone grey for example from the KS paint kits) rather than white. You could actually readily paint Deathsleet in Rainy Grey, then glaze/wash with black ink and then drybrush back through rainy grey to pure white. This is far more in keping with the usual DnD/Pathfinder white dragon art. Anyway here is where my Deathsleet is at now; (Oh the red and cork is because he doesn't fit inside my shoebox light box....)

This is my old senile red dragon, Hezikiabadadia [who should be a lot larger than this, but we don't have the really big Bones dragons available yet] I started him on a small base, but he refused to stand up so I built a bigger base around the small one. His big base is unfinished but I don't know when I'll get around to finishing it

I posted a diorama here a few weeks back, but it was never meant to be permanent. I was finally able to remove them all from the diorama and base them all. They are a team to me now and tried to keep the bases simple and matching. Deathsleet's base took me a lot longer and I'm pretty happy with it. Diorama link here if you are interested. So I'm finally getting around to boiling & reshaping my Bones from the first KS. I just wanted to share a few things I've learned 1) Deathsleet will never stand up on her own. After 5 attempts I've given up and will end up mounting her on a heavy duty base. 2) 90% of cases of bendy sword.staff syndrome can be fixed with a 3 minute boil and ice water bath - only had to hold the weapon straight once!! 3) plunging your hands into icy cold water can be very painful. 4) Almost as annoying as Deathsleet are the Goggley-Eyed Owlbear and the Fire Giantess Queen - the Owlbear wants to go back to his "dragging claws in the dirt" pose and the Queen's base is permanently warped (but at least she stays upright) 5) Saying you're making 'bone soup' will likely get you weird looks from your spouse.
