After seeing my first thread on it (I think it was @Glitterwolf's thread for such an honour) my first thought was pretty much "that looks like a LOT of fun", followed closely by "but I've never painted anything other than a few Space Marines!". Yeah, well, challenge accepted, because I kind of fell in love with how Ebonwrath looks. Yup, I'm going into this technically with very little skill in painting, but while I'm waiting for Ebonwrath (and some gnolls and paint, gnolls are the honour guard for the paint, I swear) I'll have both of the learn to paint kits to work through, and assuming everything pans out (aka assuming I filled out my Canada Post FlexDelivery stuff correctly) I'll be picking those up after work today, and then about a week and a half (ish) later Ebonwrath will be in. Seems like a semi-insane thing to do, dive right into painting a dragon when you originally were getting paints to steadily work on your WH40k Catachans army (and Skaven, sooooo many Skaven o_O ), but I figure why not have fun with life. Besides, what better to put all the new skills the LTPK's are designed to help you get a baseline grasp on than a gigantic dragon of cuddles DOOOOOOOM that, in my eyes at least, can be bribed with cookies. Some say I'm insane, I say to be a good delivery driver you need just enough insanity... Not enough to pass the entrance exams, but enough to be perfectly fine wearing shorts in -5C weather. :P Anyways, onto the rolls! I wound up rolling 14, 19, and 3.... So Terran Khaki as the main, Pure Black as the secondary colour, and Lava Orange as a highlight. Well now, that's an interesting mix in my eyes. I'm not quite certain as to how this mix will pan out, but on the flipside I chose to dive into this headfirst, so I'm also going to give it a whirl as a full on three star challenge. I'm actually kind of liking the sound of these colours, as I've had a number of different design possibilities come to mind already! Obviously, given the current promo and Rictus seeming like a nice and dedicated, honourable skeleton, I had to get a few other items into the cart for free shipping (plus a free skeleton!), and for someone to keep the gnolls in check while Ebonwrath is napping away in it's blister pack. Can't let the gnolls steal the cookies after all. Pure Black is included in one of the Learn To Paint Kits, so I didn't add it into the order from Reaper. Here's hoping I won't have to make too too much room in my gaming area to work on Ebonwrath ^_^;;;;; (since it's still another two months before I can get a dedicated miniatures area set up, but man am I looking forward to such!) I need an excuse to get out of a painting rut, so challenge accepted! The Dragon: Ebonwrath (because the Bones 3 dragons are not yet in the online store) Let the randomness begin. The fates have selected: Primary color: Cloudy Grey (16) Secondary color: Lemon Yellow (5) Tertiary color: Orange Brown (4) Oh my. I'll have to think about this one. With those colors, I'll go all in with the three star challenge. Why not...

So I finished my D20 Rainbow Dragon Challenge as given by @Cyradis, @Sirithiliel and @Pezler the Polychromatic. I always struggle with bones models, not used to how to paint yet. I liked this one a lot, especially the base and my 1st attempt at some acidic goo in/around the mouth.

Yup, what is says. Challenge accepted! First comes the Dragon, then come the Timestamp. Then the Dice Rolls of Destiny to decide on colours: Cloudy Gray, Earth Brown and Violet Red. Not bad at all. That could have gone so much more ...shall we say garish?. well anyway, as I don't have very many Reaper paints (not available in any store, not to mention continent) near me, I will make do with as similar as I can get from my other paints: and I see my cloudy grey is backwards so you can't see the name on the lable in this shot...so here is the other shot: Vallejo Tierra / Earth should be a good match for Earth Brown according to the paint range colour comparison spreadsheet. Red Violet? The spreadsheet did not really help that much as I don't really have that many of the other ranges there either. I mostly have Army Painter and a lot of older (15 years +) citadel, gamecraft and other such randomness. I hope the Citadel Fire Dragon Crimson (from the earliest round pots with flip top caps -I poured all my old paints in to dropper bottles a couple years ago.) is close enough. Seems like it should be ok based on the colour in the spreadsheet. It is a reddish violet any ways. And really old. Hope it still is useable or else I will have to mix something up. And of course, Ebonwrath was undercoated black ages ago, as I undercoated everything black in those days. As pure black is one of the permitted colours, and the black will for the most part be painted over, I think that should be OK. So the challenge is to paint Ebonwrath with ONLY these three colours, with black and white permitted for mixing. no other colours, no inks or quickshades. This should be different...

I had a lot of fun with this guy, even though I was initially a bit intimidated by the colors I rolled and am not thrilled with the scale pattern now that I've worked on him... Contest Thread Combined Show-Off thread WIP The colors rolled were 1) Orange Brown, 2) Cloudy Grey and 3) Imperial Purple and after a couple of base layers, he started to look too much like a pumpkin to not call him Pumpkin Spice.. It will be noted that I did a completely terrible job on the flocking - only my second attempt at flocking ever and doing it with a headache and lots of kids running around meant that I didn't notice until it was way too late that he's got grass growing all over his feet now! Also, pay no attention to the goldish mush-piles.. again, trying to mold with distractions didn't work out too well (not that I'm particularly adept at that either ) PS's frontmost foot was badly bent even after a boil bath, so I made him stepping on a shield. The shield, sword and bones were donors from the Ghouly Grab Bag since I got a 77242 Skeleton Warrior in my October order. oh, and I need a better photo-booth than white paper taped in front of my paint stand!

This is Ebonwrath as painted for the Random Rainbow Dragon challenge as presented here; I rolled up; Primary Colour: Olive Green Secondary colour: Lemon Yellow Teriary Colour: Terran Khaki I went for the 3 star challenge. The colours reminded me of summer in the Australian bush around my parents farm and the Blue Mountains near where I now live, so I went with a base that tried to create that impression. I hope you enjoy looking at this model as I did painting it.

Ok. I have fallen victim to this insane challenge. More than that I am determined to go for the 3 star challenge. Oh dear! In keeping with the spirit of this whole thing I rolled randomly for the dragon and got Ebonwrath. As for colours... Main: Olive Green Secondary: Lemon Yellow Tertiary: Terran Khaki

So, Ebonwrath is the first dragon I'll be painting. Lucky for me, I actually had good dice rolls. Orange Brown, Lava Orange, and Violet Red. I had to order the paints. To practice with my colors mixing (and since I got a nice set) I'm going to be trying the 3*** star challenge. This challenge is now awaiting the arrival of my paints and dragon.

I decided to join in on the fun. I selected Ebonwrath as my dragon. then rolled my colors. Pure Black, Cloudy Grey, Pure White Well interesting but not very colorful. I will go with it but having never painted anything a monotone grey-scale any suggestions or advice. I'm going to need something to switch off with to prevent eye strain. So back to the boxes of bone to find another dragon. Kryphrixis is the first one I find so he'll be my second dragon. Roll for colors gets me. Marine Teal, Clotted Red, Violet Red That's better and should make for a good looking dragon. Don't have any of those paint colors Yay an excuse to place an order for more paint. While I wait for a few days for my order to arrive i can prepare both dragons and get started on Ebonwrath. Both dragons will be painted as a 3*** challenge.

I had these 3 just laying aroudn and decided to go ahead and finish them Two are base coated, one is greenstuffed. Kyhprhixis: Going to be a white dragon, basecoated in blue and white Ebonwrath: Going to be a black dragon, basecoated in black Diabolus: Going to be a green dragon, i filled gaps and hacked off an arm and rotated it, becuase i disliked how its arm was positioned

a couple of table top dragons, nothing fancy just trying to clear my big box of minis, so I can buy more. I am hoping to put Ebonwrath on stone pillars in the middle of a swamp setting. like he/she? is standing on a collapsed bridge drooling acid into the water. c&c welcomed

When I do a WIP, I try to do something I haven't really tried before, just to keep expanding my skill set. This time, I'm going to borrow an idea from Pingo's WIP on Deathsleet (http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/59960-pingo-tackles-77110-deathsleet/?p=1082463) and try paint a black dragon with an iridescent color. The process is going to be a bit different, though. Instead of interference paint, I have a pack of pearlescent pigments I purchased in the past, but haven't really used yet: It probably works a lot like interference colors, but with mixing involved; measure out a small amount into a clear varnish (I did one spoonful of pigment to one full airbrush cup), mix well and spray over another color. I'm going to try painting over black to give an iridescent shine to the dragon's scales. Here's the obligatory first shot of the dragon, mounted on a housepaint stirrer for airbrushing, and primed and painted a 1:1 mix of Pure Black and Stormy Gray: Then I wanted to try out the various pigment colors, to see what they will look like, and to learn how the pearl colors handle. I sprayed a number of painting cups Stormy Gray and Pure Black, then tried the blue, red and purple pearl pigments: The red gave a very brown coloration over gray, and I rather liked the purple, and decided to save it for another project. (When drying a spray-painted bit over a space heater, be careful not to get it too close.) I Thought the blue pearl looked best for the dragon. I mixed the pearl into Liquitex Gloss Varnish (with just a little water to thin it), and sprayed the dragon: Whoa, that turned out really blue. Under normal light, the dragon is mostly a dull blue-gray with a few highlights, but under the daylight bulbs on my work desk, it really shines. The yellow light of an incandescent bulb counteracts the blue, but not the full spectrum lights. I'm letting it dry overnight. Tomorrow I'm going try defining the scales with a wash of Liner Gray, and that will decide if this dragon will be a black dragon or it becomes a blue dragon instead.

Well, I finally did it. I painted a dragon. I've got T'raukzul and Stormwing both coming from the Kickstarter, and a Deathsleet and a Blightfang here still waiting for me to be brave enough to apply paint to them. I feel more confident about that now that I've done Ebonwrath. It's a pretty traditional color scheme, I know. I don't have a light box or anything fancy. Just my phone. Hence the crappy photos. I'd like to base him sometime. I'm thinking the wetlands from Secret Weapon. Put him in a swamp. I need more resources though. And I'd need to practice on something smaller to make sure I don't muck it up. Anyway, c&c welcome!

Started working on my first Bones dragon project today (it's been a busy December, so a little free time for painting is sort of a Christmas present). This is the first time I've tried doing any shading or gradient sort of thing with an airbrush, mostly in the past I've just used it for priming, base coats and varnish. It's a little patchy in spots but I'm pretty happy with the overall result and it went on quick. Vallejo black primer with Reaper Ruddy Leather/Oiled Leather/Burnt Orange triad on the wings. I'll do the rest with a paintbrush, but it was a nice start.

So I found a UK supplier with okay postage for some Reaper figures - including Ebonwrath, who I've been rather wanting since I first spotted him. So I bought him, and a couple of other bits and bobs, and now I've started painting him. This is the first thing I've painted at home, and so the first thing I've painted without supervision, lol. I've ordered some more paints, because I've got a couple of things I wanna try out, but what do. So um, yes, this thread will follow my attempt at doing this mostly by myself, instead of being able to throw it at Drifter and ask if I've done it right, lol. - So Ebonbothered turned up and was a tad warped in his packaging, but no big deal. Cue my trusty colander and kettle, time to boil and adjust him a bit. His wings had a bit of a weird going on. And now it's the middle of the night and all I've done is manage like half of his base coat. Ew, camera flash, etc. Also, check out my super high tech painting space - a teatowel on my couch and a tuppaware box. Yeah! Black paint is P3 Thamar Black, and I'll be depositing a nice big heap of GW paints on him as soon as they arrive =] Ahh, I feel guilty for posting such a boring basecoat =[ but um, yes, I'll hopefully have my GW paints arrive tomorrow and then I can make him look better and post better things. His wings, despite boiling, are creeping back to form at the moment, so I may bully them back again tomorrow. Once he's fully basecoated also, I'll stick him together - figured I'd just be making work for myself if I stuck him together too early here. Seeing as I've got a whole bundle of dragons coming next year thanks to the Bones III KS, I need to learn to paint them decently >=]

As part of the 6 Month Mountain Reduction and Painting Challenge (#6MMRPC) I've decided that I need to take on some of the bigger minis in my collection, the ones I've been holding off on painting till "I'm better" and "can do them justice" since the only way I'll get better is by actually painting them... So, dragons. First up is Ebonwrath. I started it a while ago when I'd spilled some black paint, and needed something to use it up on. Aside from that, I hadn't touched it before this past weekend. This is what it looked like before I really got to work on it. Airbrushed. It's hard to see, but the wings, belly, and spines are now GW Dark Angels Green, while the body is Noir Black. The plan is to add in a bit of purple to the black, and lighten the green toward yellow.

This is the last of the five dragons I have painted this spring. I was trying experiments and some worked out and some didn't. Anyhow, this is Sandra Garrity's "Ebonwrath" in Bones painted up as a green dragon. There's something wonky with her left wing. It looks like it was clamped too hard during the manufacturing process and got a bit bent. Boiling and reshaping proved futile. So I think of it as her left pinky wing bone got broken at some point and did not heal properly. WIP thread here. (You can see the "broken" wing bone best in this picture):

So. I tried painting some minis without WIPs and found myself having a hard time keeping track of what and how much I had done. So I'm back, although these may be sporadic and really slow to update. We'll see. Anyhow, after painting a lot of tiny figures for the January Bones Beauty Pageant, I decided to move in the opposite direction and tackle some of the big figures from Bones I to clear out room for Bones II. So I am painting dragons. Five of them, if you count the Frost Wyrm. Each one gets its own thread, though, since I don't know how I'm going to progress through them. Dragon number two (going alphabetically) is 77102, Ebonwrath. I wasn't trying to make a specific "look" for any dragon. When I asked my husband the GM what colors he would like to see in dragons, he said "variety." Looking at this figure's shape, I thought of alligators and malice and green swampiness. So I figured I'd try -- or at least start -- painting it green. My painting method is pretty high-wire without a net, so I don't know what it will look like finished, only a region that I'm aiming for. It may not even be green, in the end. We'll see. At any rate, my first painting session I was doing five (count 'em) dragons, all with wings detached for ease of painting. So my first order of business after a layer of Reaper's Brown Liner, the wonder primer that Buglips identified, was to make sure each dragon and its matching wings had an underlayer in the direction of the color I was thinking of painting it. So here's Ebonwrath, first with a layer of Brown Liner, then with a wash of transparent warm dark green mixed from Phthalo Green and Burnt Sienna. Its color at the moment is a very deep green, like seaweed or badly overcooked spinach. This is only an underlayer. The other dragons I'm painting concurrently are Deathsleet, the Fire Dragon, the Shadow Dragon, and the Frost Wyrm.

I have finished my version of Ebonwrath as a blue dragon. Here she/he is starring down a (off site) party of adventurers coming for her horde. Given how helpful I found my Pathfinder Red Dragon WIP Thread, I've decided to start a new one for my next large project: Ebonwrath! Here he is assembled: And here's a base. I started with a Renedra 120mm Elipse platic base, then built it up with cork, glue, sand and bonsai stones. Here's the final assembly: I added a little more corck to support his feet, as he doesn't sit perfectly flat, and added green stuff to his joins and the base. For a colour scheme, I decided to stick with making him a panther-like black dragon, but I wanted to experiment with lighting a bit. I've settled on an obsidian theme - high contrast, gleaming skylight from above contrasted with gold and red lava flame from below. Here's a mock-up I did in Photoshop: Next step: Base coat! I'm glad I bought a spare bottle of Pure Black...
