  1. This is the chatter thread for the 2015 Summer Miniature Exchange. No sign-ups here, send me a PM for those. Feel free to talk about anything exchange related here! Remember to post pictures of your awesome miniature when you receive it!
  2. Now terminalmancer has received the mini's. This the first one, the bones Nightspectre. I was looking for an excuse to use the led kits I received from a kickstarter. So i made the base a bit higher and put 2 leds beneath the mini and a battery holder and switch on the bottom. The leds give a nice effect, but the camera does not like it. These are the best pictures. The plastic was a bit weird to paint on, the paint did not want to stick on some places. I am happy how it turned out.
  3. With the Spring Exchange winding down, its time to start thinking about the next exchange. As before, there will be about two months of painting time. Signups will run from May 1st to May 10th, with assignments going around the 15th. Miniatures should be mailed by July 15th. I'm posting from ReaperCon, so I wont be around the next few days to answer questions, but I'll answer when I get back. If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. I then match you with a person whom you will paint a mini for, and a second person whom you will receive a painted mini from (sometimes it's the same person). You have until the deadline to send your mini out (please try really hard to do this, though we understand if sometime life gets in the way). That's pretty much it, feel free to PM me with questions. How does it work? (tl;dr version) Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Paint your partner a mini and mail it to them by July 15th. This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations. Full RulesReaper minis are the focus. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. If you wish to include other gifts for your recipient, you may do so, but please keep them small. There is no hard and fast rule, but keeping the value less than the price of a single miniature is a good rule of thumb. The focus of the exchange should be a Reaper product. Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. Please fill out the current version of the questionnaire, as some of the questions have changed. I am going to be a little stricter than normal about filling in all the questions and may send it back for clarification if you don't. Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't. If you want to keep your participation a secret, make sure that you don't post in here or the chatter thread. Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline. Let an organizer know if you are going to be late. This thread is for official business/discussion only. That includes stuff like questions for me, or updates about sending and receiving packages, but discussions about what you're painting or how awesome the mini you received was should go in the chatter thread. If you are mailing internationally and plan to send more than just miniatures/paint, you must contact your recipient to get any "bonus items" approved. We don't want any trouble with customs. The organizers (fanguad, ub3r_n3rd) can help facilitate any anonymous conversations you want to have with your partner. Have fun! Deadline The deadline to mail out miniatures for this exchange will be two months from when assignments are sent out, on July 15th. Assignments Deadline The organizers will send the assignments out in about two weeks (May 15th). Please let me know if you're interested by the 10th. I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements. Exchange Assistant ub3r_n3rd will be helping me run this exchange. He will coordinate and communicate with approximately half the participants. You can contact either of us if you have any questions or issues.
  4. For my exchange partner this time around I was assigned Traxia. So if you are reading this and haven't opened your package, stop now! When going through Traxia's answers to the questionnaire, the moment I saw "Chronoscope" I knew what I was going to paint even though it's not made by Reaper. Maow makes affordable resin minis in limited runs and I just so happen to have a few of them. One in particular is the awesome steampunk figure "Johnny Rocket." There were only 400 made, but if you want one there are still a few left out in the wild. Better hurry though, before another forumite grabs one first. To try something new, or rather a lot of something news, I used Scalecolor exclusively as well as my new WAMP brushes. It was my first shot at NMM bronze, a leather bomber jacket, and the first time I opened their NMM steel set. I think the 1st shot at both NMMs worked out fairly well, though I yet lack the brush control to really do NMM on tiny things like buckles and such. Some day I shall conquer the NMM! The leather I liked a lot more before I sealed it. There was a color shift that made the browns darker and some subtlety was lost. Lesson learned. Even so it's still decent leather. If I were to change something, I would go a different route with the canvas straps across his chest. I think the color ended up a little too close to the bronze. And now for way too many pics.
  5. So, I had a bad time this last Minis Exchange on the Reaper boards. I got a partner that I had no clue what to paint for them! I had no ideas, no inspiration, no anything really! It took until the week before we were supposed to send by for me to have an Idea. So here it is... So first off, I should explain a bit about this mini. Female Bugbears are not common miniatures to paint, so i had to have a reason for her to be useful for my Partner. So, I decided on this one due to Talae's interest in the Eberron D&D setting and that he said "Not All Monsters are Bad Guys". So, I though, well Maybe Not then. "Some Monsters are Bad-A$$ Girls!" So, that is were this mini comes in. I had to get a few lessons and assistance to make this Girl Bad-A$$ enough. Fortunately, My FLGS, Gatehouse Games, is run by an awesome Gamer and skilled Painter, Tim Gatehouse! So, on Tuesday the 14th of July, I arrived shortly after the store opened for painting lessons. Being his least busy day of the week, I had his help most of the day. So I made what I am sure is my best work to date. But first WiP Pics I took at Gatehouse Games during the course of the painting... First was the Wolf Skin Armor bits and the Base Coat on the Fleshy bits. Then was defining the Fleshy bits more. Finalized the Shield with wear and tear effects. Got last minute Details like her bag and Earring. And for the Perverts out there, yes she is giving you a "Panty Shot". GF
  6. Well, everyone. Arc724 made the following comment in his guidelines for his exchange mini: "I'm starting a Star Wars RPG Campaign, so if you can paint me a Sith or Jedi, you'd have a new friend forever." Challenge Accepted... As soon as I saw this figure years ago I thought "He'd make a great Sith." Now I had the chance to prove it. I call him Bel'Rheol. That was a jumble of the letters in Hellbore (which is the only name on the blister card). He has a weird spiral hat, so I Ret-Conned that to make him a Twi'Lek. In reading on the Wookieepedia, I came across a Headmistress at a Sith Assassin Academy named Darth Traya who was pale with black eyes from "seeing with the force." I used that idea. I originally envisioned short sabers (Shoto) like dagger length, but they ended up like long short-swords. I modified his toes to be less "Jester-Like" and more Sci-Fi acceptable, with little green stuff soles. He is on a Secret Weapon 30mm Tau Ceti base. The shoto are sewing needles. (see WIP when done). I'll get into colors, thoughts and ideas more in the WIP, which it looks like will be later since I just got paged to go in to work... WIP http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63010-02782-warl-hellbore-assassin-wip-for-summer-2015-exchange/ Fiction: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63011-from-the-personal-holocron-of-master-bel%E2%80%99rheol-force-assassin/ Enjoy!
  7. My exchange partner this time was Thes Hunter. I decided on the awesome Battle Troll. I figured it should give her players a good scare! Here are my less than awesome photos (I snagged a few just before packing it, at work, on the deadline...) Hopefully Thes will post some much better photos at some point
  8. I painted this couatl for OneBoot for the Summer Exchange. The couatl comes with a 1" square base, but I upgraded it to a 2" round base to make it the appropriate size for Pathfinder/D&D. First time doing a jungle base. Someone on the forum mentioned getting plastic plants from Michael's to use their leaves to make plants, so that is what I did.
  9. This was a bonus mini for OneBoot for the Summer Exchange. Painting this little guy was fun.
  10. I drew Sirithiliel as my exchange partner (and by coincidence, I was her partner as well). She wanted a druid or a monk, and I had been wanting to paint Tobias here for a while. He's got a very dynamic pose, and actually is kind of out-of-place among other Reaper minis, IMO. The sculpt is interesting and quite cool, but also kind of weird after working with it for a while - how did his cloak get out in front of him? where's the other half of his bow? what's that green thing next to the quiver? I think the sculptor might be the guy behind Tin Man Miniatures - same name, at least. I felt like playing around with my Dark Elf skin triad, but it'd be a stretch to paint him as a drow, so instead I am calling him a "night elf." I also knew there was going to be a lot of brown and green on him, so I wanted something that would stand out a bit more than normal the normal caucasian/blonde elf combo. Plus, I keep asking people to do non-caucasian skin-tones, so I should do so as well. I'm pretty happy with the greens, but less so with the browns - the browns were done during "the slog." The greens have fluorescent green mixed into the highlights, so they really look like they're glowing.
  11. OK everyone. Not sure how best to post WIP after the fact. So, I'm going to post a few pictures at a time. I was paired to paint for Arc724 in the Summer 2015 Exchange. This was my first time, and his. Here's the link to the Show Off. http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63001-02782-warl-hellbore-assassin-exchange-mini-for-2015-summer/ And here is the Fiction: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63011-from-the-personal-holocron-of-master-bel’rheol-force-assassin/ Here are the starting supplies: A few angles of the mini. The base is a 30mm Tau-Ceti base from Secret Weapon. The Shoto (Short Sabers) are sewing needles I picked up at Hobby Lobby.
  12. Show off related to this piece: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63001-02782-warl-hellbore-assassin-exchange-mini-for-2015-summer/ WIP related to this piece: http://forum.reapermini.com/index.php?/topic/63010-02782-warl-hellbore-assassin-wip-for-summer-2015-exchange/ From the Personal Holocron of Master Bel’Rheol, Force Assassin Transcripts of His Address to the Grey Brotherhood on Ziost …to do so, you must release yourself from the hold the galaxy has on you: My parents should have known I would be their undoing. The archivists told me that an albino Twi’Lek born to two red Lethan Twi’Leks was a one-in-a-million birth. Everyone was right to see it as a bad omen. My parents should have disposed of me as a babe. I severed my ties to this galaxy by severing their heads. You will be called upon to do this too, initiates. You must cut ties with your prior lives, and you must cut deeply. You will learn quickly, initiates, that you are entering into a legacy at the very core of the persistence of the universe. We are not Sith. We are not Jedi. We are the force-wielding agents of the balance. Law? Chaos? Good? Evil? These are all the abstractions of the inhabitants of the universe: Men and women with goals and agendas. The balance cares nothing for their goals. So, although we are often called on to assassinate Jedi, we have also assassinated Sith for as long as our brotherhood has survived. We are truly neutral, intent on making sure the scales of power never shift too far in one direction, and in doing so, we make sure the galaxy will endure. We have pursued this goal since our betrayal on Malachor V all those years ago. I remember it vaguely, because a piece of my will was there. You will learn these secrets, young ones. At the height of your power, you can absorb some of the life essence and will of those you defeat. In doing so, your knowledge grows by countless bounds. We have also mastered the techniques of force-siphoning: You will have no fear in battle, as the stronger your enemy is, the stronger you become by drawing out and draining their power to bolster yourselves. Jedi may be content with turning into a blue ghost upon their death, but we endure. Slain Sith haunt isolated caves. With training, you can impose your mind and will into your destroyer. If you overpower them, your mind lives on in their body. Masters have done this for centuries and millennia, living on undetected and with borrowed memories from the poor souls they possessed. Don’t become overconfident. Know your place: Five Grey Brotherhoods on ancient Sith worlds, each with a Master, two apprentices, four adepts, eight novices, and sixteen initiates. We have been hidden here on Ziost for millennia. Sith and Jedi have scoured this planet for trinkets and baubles, but we remain hidden. This concealment is your greatest defense. With patience, you can hide yourselves in many ways: For the gullible, we borrow the “mind trick†of the Jedi to fool someone into seeing us differently. I might appear not as an albino Twi’lek, but as a wookiee. This little trick won’t fool more force-savvy opponents. To do so requires first masking your ability with the force: Force Concealment. Clever Sith have done this throughout time to hide in plain sight. You will also be taught to use the force camouflage and force invisibility to disappear completely; not with some hocus pocus potion like those witches on Dathomir or a primitive stealth-field-generator. No, your mastery of the force will allow you to walk next to someone unseen, unheard, unfelt, and unheeded. The force will also be your guide. Many of you are gawking at my grey eyes. When you reach out with the force over and over, you eventually see and hear the galaxy so clearly that you don’t need to use your eyes. With time, your eyes will cloud over: Jedi eyes turn white, Sith eyes turn black, and ours turn grey. Because of our mastery of stealth, we don’t use full length lightsabers. We use shoto. These versatile weapons allow us to capitalize on our dexterity rather than brute strength. They can be adjusted in length from fifteen to sixty centimeters. When shorter, they make excellent thrown weapons. When wielded in pairs, our Jar’Kai style of Ataru (Form IV) is nearly unstoppable. The quick leaping strikes, augmented by the force, are difficult to anticipate. One shoto can be thrown while the other defends. One can be deactivated and reactivated while the other traps your foes lightsaber in the vicious Pass the Blade attack. Using the Shoto-Swarm, you can quickly unbalance and confuse your enemy. Trispzest allows you to force back many foes while leaping to safety. All of this is fine, but the best strategy is to sneak up behind your target, and only activate your shoto once the emitters are within an inch of their neck. That way, their reaction to the sound of activation will be too late. The blades are already driven into their skull-base. Once again, welcome initiates. Study hard. Practice often. Respect your superiors. And above all, maintain vigilant secrecy. Only with anonymity may we continue to do the will of the universe to maintain balance.
  13. OK Everyone. I'm so jazzed by the minis SGHawkins09 sent me for the 2015 summer exchange. This was the Bone Earth Elemental 77185 painted in an ice/snow theme, based as such. It might be a great proxy for a certain Disney Movie all the kids know by heart these days... She fogot to take pictures, so I did her the honor. She should be very proud of her work. I love how in certain shots/angles, the snow effect looks like it's melting! This figure and its partner have taken up front positions on the Shelf of HonorTM
  14. My exchange partner this time around was Teskeria. She requested unicorns, pegasus, dragons, alicorns, mages, rogues, or swordmasters. I was fresh out of unicorns and pegasus, and I was pretty sure I didn't have any alicorns but I looked up what they were just to be sure. While I did have some PC characters from the Bones kickstarters, they are pretty ubiquitous around the forum and I didn't want to give away something my partner already had. What about a mount you say? Well as it happens Reaper does in fact make one. Barros & Tempest actually comes with a choice of three different riders. There is a fully armored knight with a lance, a male knight with a lance, and a female with a sword. My idea was to have it leaping off of a cliff face or something, but having used cork instead of carving a wooden block (which I thought of after the fact) I was worried that the cork might tear under the weight of the mini and set it back from the edge a little bit. The rock serves two purposes: it will give Teskeria something to grab onto during play and it elevates the mini high enough that the wings should be able to clear any "medium size" creature on the table. To give you an idea of the wingspan, that is a 3" reaper base that the mini is nailed to. No really. Nails. She can take a picture if you don't believe me.
  15. This is the chatter thread for the 2015 Spring Miniature Exchange. No sign-ups here, send me a PM for those. Feel free to talk about anything exchange related here! Remember to post pictures of your awesome miniature when you receive it!
  16. Finished up my last exchange mini!!! I packed it up with Malena, and some other goodies, and I plan on shipping it out tonight! I hope my partner likes it! My partner said that they usually use their minis for D&D, so I only went for a tabletop quality. Let me know what you think!! C&C is always welcome!
  17. So, I got two of these, and my exchange partner (who doesn't know this is for them!!) said they use minis mostly for D&D gameplay. I figured it was a good way to paint up some cloth and work on blending. She has the smallest eyes I have ever painted, so they are not great. :) Working on more blending after this, but at least she's done! C&C always welcome, enjoy!
  18. With Secret Sophie finishing up as a roaring success, I'm happy to announce the Spring Miniature Exchange for 2015. Going forward, I hope to run four exchanges a year. This means that actual painting time will be slightly reduced, but since I think most people use the majority of their time for procrastination this will not cause any problems. Signups for this exchange will run from February 1st to February 10th, with assignments going out by the 15th. Miniatures should be mailed by April 15th, which will allow us to start the summer exchange around May 1st. Paint your partner a mini and mail it to them by April 15th. This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations. Full Rules Reaper minis are the focus. Have fun! Deadline The deadline to mail out miniatures for this exchange will be two months from when assignments are sent out, on April 15th. Assignments Deadline The organizers will send the assignments out in about two weeks (February 15th).
  19. It's time for our next forum miniature exchange. If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. I then match you with a person whom you will paint a mini for, and usually a second person whom you will receive a painted mini from (sometimes it's the same person). You have until the deadline to send your mini out (though we tend to be fairly lax about enforcing deadlines; remember it's supposed to be fun!). That's pretty much it, feel free to PM me with questions. So, without further ado... The Rules 1. Reaper minis are the focus. 2. Assignments Deadline I will send the assignments out in two weeks (May 29th). Please let me know if you're interested by the 27th. I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements. Exchange Assistant I am looking for an assistant to help me run this exchange, or to take over if I should suddenly disappear. Duties will include assigning matches and tracking exchanges for half the participants. 20. With the successful completion of the Summer Exchange (modulus a few remaining packages), it's time to ramp up for fall! This exchange will be on a slightly tighter timeframe than usual so that we have room for the Secret Sophie gift exchange at the end of the year. Signups will run from September 1 to September 10, with the assignments going out no later than September 15th. You will have two months (not the usual three) to mail your miniature out. If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. 21. Welcome, everyone, to the 2014 Secret Sophie thread! What is Secret Sophie, you ask? Well, it's a lot like Secret Santa, with a more attractive (albeit more dangerous) delivery person! (For those not in the know, Sophie the Succubus is Reaper's mascot.) This is the time of year for Reaper forumites to give some holiday cheer to each other. Signups will run from November 16th to November 24, with the assignments going out no later than November 27th. This is a tight schedule, but that's okay, because you don't have to paint anything if you don't want to! If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this: Everyone who is interested PMs me with the questionnaire below filled out. The organizers (fanguad, ub3r_n3rd) then match you with a person you will send your gift/mini, and another person whom you will receive a gift/mini from in return (sometimes it's the same person). You have until the deadline to send your gift/mini out (though we tend to be fairly lax about enforcing deadlines; remember it's supposed to be fun!). That's pretty much it, feel free to PM me with questions. How does it work? (tl;dr version) The focus of this exchange is to give your partner new Reaper-branded presents. If you want to treat this like a miniature exchange, that's an option, too. Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. The deadline for non-painters to mail their items is December 31st. The deadline for painters is January 15th. This thread is for official business only. Use the chatter thread for random conversations. Full Rules Decide whether you are doing gifts or miniature exchange or both."Gifts" are Reaper paints, unpainted miniatures, or other Reaper painting supplies. Recommended dollar value of gifts is $25 or less. The miniature exchange is where you paint a Reaper miniature for someone and mail it to them. Non-Reaper items may be included, but the focus of this event is on Reaper items, so keep them small. Fill out the appropriate sections of the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM. That includes stuff like questions for me, or updates like "I mailed my package", but discussions about what to send or how awesome the stuff you received was should go in the chatter thread. In the past some people have wanted to send food - please verify allergens, etc. with your partner before proceeding. Have fun! Deadline The deadline for mailing gifts is December 31st, but if you can get it out before Christmas, that's even better! The deadline for mailing exchange miniatures is January 15th. That's only about a month and a half so if you can't make the deadline, please sign up for the gift exchange only. Assignments Deadline The organizers will send the assignments out in about two weeks (November 27th). Please let me know if you're interested by the 24th. I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements. Exchange Assistant ub3r_n3rd will be helping me run this exchange. He will coordinate and communicate with approximately half the participants. You can contact either of us if you have any questions or issues. 22. Kangaroorex got my minis today! It was a lot of fun to paint these minis because we never use sci-fi. Anyways, I'm glad he liked them, I hope y'all do too!
  23. The Encounter at the Ruins Willen looked around, the area overgrown with plants, the once great elven city had fallen into ruin, forgotten beyond all memory. As he approached, glowing blue runes flared to life and upon the landing above the crumbling stairs he saw something gleaming... He moved past the broken column and noticed the brackish water to his right stir. Slowly, he pulled forth his razor sharp blade and climbed up the first two steps when suddenly the surface of the water erupted with an eyestalk, green in color and the eye a baleful yellow and red... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Here we go! These are pics Willen took of his exchange figure at my place after we exchanged gifts. I ran them through GIMP for white balance and cropped them tonight. Figure: Dayln Talas, Elven Sword Mage Manufacturer: Reaper (SKU #03597) Material: Pewter Sculptor: Matt Gubser Basing: Scratch built from Secret Weapon broken columns, Hirst Arts vase/urn (from Bonwirn), creature eyestalk from Reaper Creature Parts pack, Cork, and Vallejo Red Oxide Paste. WIP Thread is found here. C&C are welcomed and appreciated, thanks for looking! ETA: New pics taken by Willen!
  24. I painted the Bones version of Elquin as part of the Secret Sophie 2014 miniature exchange for Leopardpixie. She says that her favorite colors are pink and black, so they were the starting point for this miniature. I started by airbrushing RMS Cactus Flower, which was eye-wateringly bright. The final result is less so, but let that be a warning to anyone trying to use this color. I had decided to make his jacket black, but realized there's some complex relationship between his jacket and cloak - it actually kind of looks like it's all one garment. I did my best to find good points of separation. The skin is the RMS Olive Triad. I'm consciously trying to paint miniatures with diverse skin tones, and just because he's an elf, he doesn't get a pass. I am very proud of his eyes (though I forgot eyebrows again!). It was nice to work on a heroically proportioned miniature, as I've been painting lots of miniatures with realistically sized eyes recently. I don't have the control to do full dks eyes on a Hasslefree or Darksword miniature. The scrolls lost nearly all their detail in the transition to Bones, unfortunately. I tried to figure out what they were an eventually decided on scrolls - I checked the metal figure and concept art just now, and that is in fact what they are supposed to be. I also have a feeling that he gets a lot of crap about the color of his cloak from fellow adventurers. "Shut up guys! It's lightish red" or "Who cares what it looks like, it gives me a +3 to all my saves!"
  25. I wanted to make a thread for the miniature I painted for Fishnjeeps for the Fall Exchange. I had alot of fun painting him and felt he turned out well. Fishnjeeps hoped for a Dwarf miniature with a long beard. After going through my collection of unpainted miniatures I had several to choose from, and like always decided to go to the Game Store just to see what they may have. Normally I would then come home with a few more miniatures just in case my mood changed on what to paint. This time I only came home with one, Reaper Miniatures King Thorgram sculpted by Werner Klocke. When I saw him I thought he was perfect as his beard was very regal and he even was wearing a bear pelt cloak. When I got home I opened him up and immediately scrutinized the miniature looking for mold lines that may pose problems and to my satisfaction the sculpt was very clean with no major flaws. After deciding to paint the King I was torn between two color schemes. Since a few of you have called me "The Mistress of Crimson Tresses" I of course wanted to go with red hair. With his bird I pictured him being used as a druid or ranger (sans bow), so ultimately I settled with green and brown, with gold accents. I wanted his main focal point to be his face and beard and his bird to be secondary. I wish I could get his hair to show better in the photos as I put alot of work in adding depth and variation to it. Only fishnjeeps could tell me if I succeeded in that, as he now resides with him. I really enjoyed painting King Thorgram and I hope that shows with how he turned out. Presenting King Thorgram Dwarf Master of the Forest. Here is a closeup of his bird C&C welcome
