Hi everybody! Let me show you my first tries at painting miniatures: I went heavy with the dark wash but it was on purpose in order to have an effect "out of dirt". Don't hesitate if you have any comments or tips!

These are the first figures I painted after lurking around here for a few months. Think they came out well.

I thought he was wearing a long sleeve cloth shirt so I kept his arms black. But I saw someone else who had his arms painted with a flesh color. Oh well. I watched some tutorials on different techniques and this is the result. I really enjoyed painting him and will be doing many more.

Couldn't resist the silly-ish title - it was originally going to be "Novice Painter, versus LTPK:Core!" but I changed it a touch at the end.. Bonus points if you read that as the Innkeeper from Hearthstone. :P While I have painted miniatures in the past, I've first and foremost never shown such results to anyone, and secondly went in blindly with those ones, and while I was happy with them at the time, I wanted to improve. Other things in life took over for a while, and then finally I said that's it, I'm either going to FINALLY paint my primered army of doom that was at Doom In June 2005 or I'm going to sell the minis I've had sitting in boxes for over a decade. So glad I found out about the Learn to Paint Kits, because that pretty much solidified that decision right then and there :P Anyways! At some point we were all at this stage, and while looking over the pictures I can see a number of things I can improve on (*cough* like my up close photography skills *cough*), but for most things... I'm happy with them. Especially the chain mail on the Orc Marauder. I just might have to retake some of these photos, because I realize looking at them that, uhm, first and foremost f1.7 blurs half the model, and secondly, I didn't get a shot of the backside of the Marauder's Shield, which I was also happy about. Oops. But before I ramble on for three pages......! Drybrushing feels sooooo weird, but it was starting to click once I got to Magnu, even if I wound up overdoing it in a few areas and it so wasn't a dry effect anymore. But that's life, we learn from our actions!

A while back my wife said she'd like to try painting sometime. I said sure and didn't really think about it, then tonight she said she'd like to try. Now I had just primed a bunch of miniatures a week or two ago, had I remembered that passing comment I would have primed one for her too. When I first got into miniature painting I bought a few bags of skeletons (kind of like the old green plastic army men but they're yellowish skeletons). Size wise these skeletons are larger than a D&D skeleton. I planned to use a few as large skeletons, a minotaur skeleton, or a skeleton statue. These miniatures were great to learn on, so I got one out for her to paint. These skeletons weren't really meant to be painted and if they're not primed you really need to layer it on. We muscled through though. I took her step by step through the Reaper Learn to Paint pamphlet. Which is the same way I learned to do skeletons. First we did a wet application of white followed by Dirty Bone. Next I had her apply a thin wash of Pure Black finishing it with a dry brush of Dirty Bone. Everything else got a simple wet layer. Shield and sword were Honed Steel, the helmet and back of the shield were Leather Brown, the pommel of the sword was a mixture (Pure Black, Honed Steel, and a little White), and the sword's decoration was White. Painting a miniature especially a larger one may have given her a newfound respect for my hobby. I think it came out really well though.

Hello everyone, So I have had reaper minis since the first bones kickstarter, but it wasn't until recently that I actually decided to start painting. I wanted to show off what I've done so far, and hopefully post other pictures as I make progress. I realize that these are rough, and I appreciate any advice on the matter. I posted these pretty well in the order that I painted them, and had anywhere from a few days to a few weeks between each mini. I think I am finally getting the hang of dry brushing, as seen with the golem, and the more I learn, the more I think I need to go back and touch up my older paint jobs. But overall, I'm pretty happy with the way they look. I can't wait to use them at the game table! P.S. I probably need to find a better place and method for taking pictures. These are ok, but I like the more professional looking pictures I tend to see. Apologies if the quality on these pictures is not excellent.

Hi Everyone! I'm extremely new to this. I've never tried my hand at painting as a hobby.. let alone miniature painting. But after Bones 3 funded, and my realization that I had several other mini games coming from KS at some point, I started gathering everything I needed to learn how to paint. I bought some stuff i didn't need, and some other stuff that I might need someday. After all the fiddling I wound up with a Reaper Bones: Learn to Paint Kit as a starting point. I had also bought a few bones (20ish random models) through an ebay sale to futz with. Tonight I started painting. I started at 8 and ended around midnight. I tried to follow the directions as close as possible... I made a lot of mistakes... I know they aren't even close to what you guys here can do, but i can't believe how these turned out as my first try! I started with the 77018: Skeletal Archer, and in my grab-bag of bones found a 77144: Mummy which i thought might share a similar palette (eh... kinda) I'm still working on a soft box setup so the lighting and focus are a bit off, but here's the result! The next two models in the kit look significantly harder than the Skele (77042: Orc Marauder, 77150: Ragnaros) but hopefully I can do them justice! If you have any comments or tips i'd really like to hear them! -K

Hello. Thought I would share the very first 2 miniatures I've ever painted; the space marine was painted first and then the scarabs were painted second. I really like the effect basing adds to a miniature, kind of like providing a background to a drawn character. I did a lot of reading up and watching videos and looking at examples before attempting these, and I can definitely tell I need to develop some muscle memory for my painting hand. Feel free to ask questions or provide some advice/pointers. The space marine looks like he does because I tried putting a sealant coat on him after the paint job to protect him (Citadel's Purity Seal spray can) but it didn't do what I wanted and, in my opinion, degraded the figure. If anyone has any better alternative products that would work to protect the miniature without compromising the paint job please please please leave a comment with your suggestion. Thank you.
