  5. Mel Bose – The Terrain Tutor – has been building terrain for almost as long as he can remember. When he was five, Mel built playsets for his little green army men in the corner of the craft store his mother ran. He was often assisted by model railroaders who were regulars at the store and, by the time he saw his first White Dwarf magazine at age 15, Mel was primed for a life of building terrain. Mel has traveled the world, as a medic in the army, a physiotherapist, and even a salesman. He has worked with people from all walks of life, and looked at things from many different perspectives. It is this approach that he brings to his successful YouTube channel (The Terrain Tutor, click the image below to check it out). For the last fiveyears, Mel has been able to make a living from sharinghis passion – teaching people everything he knows about building terrain for tabletopwargaming, for hobbyists, clubs, displays, and for dioramas – and it’s that passion and knowledge that he is bringing to this book, TERRAIN ESSENTIALS. This Kickstarter campaign is to fund a printed version of the book – TERRAIN ESSENTIALS – a 96+ page book perfect to add to the collection of anyone with an interest in creating excellent tabletop terrain, regardless of purpose or the builder's ability. The Content of TERRAIN ESSENTIALS Mel has spent many years researching all manner of tools, materials and techniques, as well as experimenting and documenting his process. He’ll be putting it down on paper for the first time, and TERRAIN ESSENTIALS will include: • Theory – From inspiration and research to planning and set design, from colour theory and build types to workflow and longterm project management, this section will help you plan the best terrain for you before you even start building. • Materials & Tools – Covering all the most commonly used materials, from basic craft and DIY to specialist modeling materials – including how and where to use them in terrain making – along with an in-depth guide to the essential simple, professional, and custom tools specific to making terrain, this section is all about making sure you have the right tool and right material for the job! • Core Techniques – From cutting bases to sealing your finished terrain and a whole host of techniques in-between, this section will ensure you have a solid understanding of the core skills and techniques used across the spectrum of terrain building. Covering the essentials, from basics like cutting and gluing, to advanced washes, sealing techniques and combating warping, this section will not only give you the information and confidence to use these techniques but also troubleshoot them. • Base, Texture, and Paint – Good terrain starts with a good foundation and this section provides in-depth coverage of basing, laying down the ground, realistic texturing techniques, and a range of earth tone painting guides. From cheap and easy basing materials to perfect pigments, you will have the information you need to make sure all of your projects start with a solid, realistic foundation. • Grasses and Trees – This section is all about the greenery, from laying down beautiful and durable grasslands and pastures, to tufts, flowers, shrubs, bushes and hedgerows. As well as tackling the small stuff, this section will go into creating a range of trees; everything from armatures, to bark textures, painting and finally creating awesome looking foliage for your trees. • Hills and Rocks – As the most common feature on gaming tables, this section covers those rocks, slopes, hills, and cliffs. We look at everything from a number of different construction techniques to maximising playability without sacrificing realism, realistic painting guides, and more advanced techniques for modular and large feature hills and cliffs. • Buildings and Ruins – Buildings and ruins can be mini-projects in their own right, so this section breaks it all down and takes you step-by-step through building, painting and fine detailing for buildings from our history, or a dystopian, gothic, far-flung future. Covering multiple techniques for everything from the foundations to the roofs, this section will have you making the best buildings for your urban combat. • Water and Snow – Often seen as the more challenging aspects of terrain making, this section will demystify water and snow pieces, giving you a range of techniques, core colour theory, and guides to the most common pieces like ponds, modular rivers, and snowy terrain. • Terrain Kits – As kits, prints, and casts become more prevalent in tabletop gaming, this section not only equips you with the key knowledge to make putting your kit together problem free. But it’s not only about building kits; we will also take you through customising and tying your kits to your existing terrain collection, giving you what you need to turn each kit into a unique terrain piece. • Mel’s Top Tips – Throughout the previous sections, Mel will be giving his top tips, tricks and fixes, making sure you learn from his mistakes so your builds go as smoothly as possible. We are planning to cover each of these chapters in as much detail as possible, to give you as much information as we can. We have a number of stretch goals planned that will help us provide more in-depth knowledge on each of the techniques used and sample builds shown in the book. Why create a book? It has been quite a while since there was a great “Introduction to Terrain Building” type of book on the market, so after five years of helping the community build their terrain on Youtube, it seemed right for Mel to be the one to do it. On The Terrain Tutor YouTube channel, Mel presents a lot of great ideas, techniques, materials, and tools in a handy, episodic fashion, but we know that not everyone learns in the same way. The written word (particularly when accompanied by great photographs) can help many terrain builders connect with the material covered in Mel’s videos. Helping others enjoy their hobby is one of the key drivers behind The Terrain Tutor, and Mel finds there’s certainly a lot of job satisfaction when helping others be happy is your living. Mel is partnering with Dave Taylor, of Dave Taylor Miniatures, to bring this book to life. Dave has been involved in tabletop miniatures wargaming for almost 30 years, has worked in "the business" for 25 years, and has known Mel for a decade. Dave recently delivered his own book aimed at helping wargamers complete more of their wargaming projects more often – Armies & Legions & Hordes – which he successfully funded here on Kickstarter last year. Dave is running this campaign, and will be coordinating the layout, editing, publishing, and distribution of TERRAIN ESSENTIALS. Of course, this campaign is also a bit of an experiment. If things go well, we may look into a series of more detailed books for a future campaigns. Rewards Stretch Goals
  6. Midlam Miniatures has a cute new Kickstarter with kid and teen miniatures: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1662635043/junior-townsfolk-and-villagers?ref=checkout_rewards_page Of course I backed, I have backed almost all of Midlam's Kickstarters, I am definitely a fan of their style.
  7. Another fun one from Stonehaven, with some of my favorite rarities: female Goblins and Orcs! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stonehavenmini/stonehaven-adventurers-2020?ref=user_menu Story “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play.” – Jane Goodall There are doors a hulking orc warrior can bash open in a single blow that would take a party of kobolds a month to chisel through and there are priceless artifacts that a goblin catburglar can swipe without a sound that an army of dwarves would have a great deal of trouble acquiring. Our differences make us strong. With the Stonehaven Adventurers 2020 project, we are creating a variety of adventuring parties. Some will include variations of a single fantasy race, others will be a mix of different fantasy races. The parties will not all include the same number of miniatures becuase of the difference in the cost of production due to size, and not all of the parties will be included in the Core Set. Some are only available as add-ons. The miniatures will be made in the USA. They will be cast in 100% lead free pewter (or polyurethane resin in the case of the dragon) and some assembly will be required. They will be sculpted on the standard 28 mm scale. Slotted round bases will be included with miniatures that are pictured on round bases. And now we present the Core Set: Pictured from top to bottom, left to right: Grippli Warrior, Grippli Samurai, Kobold Archer, Half-Dragon Wizard, Pygmy Lizardfolk Rogue Cold Blood Clan! Though they come from disparate backgrounds, these heroes have been bound together by cruel circumstance. Finding themselves aboard a prison vessel bound for the quicksilver mines, they combined their strengths, made their escape, and discovered that they weren't so different after all. (Want another one?Add-on cost: $25) Pictured from top to bottom, left to right: Male Human Hedgemage, Male Human Thief, Male Human Dagger Hobo, Male Half-Elf Fighter, Female Half-Elf Swashbuckler These scavengers follow the great armies, stealing gear, treasure, and other supplies from the casualties of war. They are not above creating a few extra casualties in order to "find" a few more treasures! (Want another one? Add-on cost: $25) Pictured from top to bottom, left to right: Male Human Blademaster, Female Human Monk, Male Human Monk, Male Human Bard, Male Human Jester Lord Rhatagon's players travel from town to town, performing for the peasants and generally distracting from the privations of peasant life. Each has their own past that they are running from, but none moreso than Rhatagon himself, who travels with his minstrels seeking to rebuild the honor of his house. (Want another one? Add-on cost: $25) Pictured from left to right, top to bottom: Male Goblin Necromancer, Male Goblin Monk, Female Goblin Witch, Male Goblin Warrior (Locked), Female Goblin Rogue, Female Goblin Ranger (Locked) Goblins seldom get the chance to determine their own destinies. They are the pawns of greater powers and are seen as vermin by the "civilized" races. But just as men can surely be evil, goblins can surely be good. (Want another one? Add-on cost: $25) Pictured from left to right, top to bottom: Male Tengu Rogue, Male Dwarven Cleric, Male Halfling Trickster, Male Dwarven Guard, Male Tiefling Geomancer The Doublecreek Watch has had its hands full lately with escaped convicts, charlatans, and would-be heroes running around stirring up trouble! It's going to be one zany adventure, culminating in the wacky awakening of ancient horrors! (Want another one? Add-on cost: $25) In addition to the Core Set, we've got some other stuff that is only available as add-ons. This is that stuff! Pictured from top to bottom, left to right: Male Orc Fighter, Female Orc Cleric, Female Orc Archer, Male Orc Wizard, Male Orc Warrior The massive mountain Orcs have formed an uneasy alliance with the mountain queen. Orc warriors, once feared and killed on sight, are now commonplace among the caravan guards and mercenary companies that come down from the northern steppes. (Add-on cost: $37) The Mushroom Folk have lived under the dark trees for as long as time has been counted. Mercurial creatures, they can change their form to best suit the needs of the coming day. Although many will prefer to maintain a single form, others will change form each night: from simple form to warrior form, or from spore form to mage form. Each form has its strengths and drawbacks. The Mushroom Folk have interchangeable parts and can be assembled into thousands of different combinations. Add-on: Mushroom Folk Subset A (Add-on cost: $25) Add-on: Mushroom Folk Subset B (Add-on cost: $25) Add-on: Mushroom Folk Subset C (Add-on cost: $25) Add-on: Mushroom Folk Subset D (Add-on cost: $25) Mushroom folk unlocked by stretch goals will be added to the Mushroom Folk Set. The Reclining Dragon rests comfortably on your tabletop, awaiting delicious adventurers to walk into its jaws. Or you could barter with it, or whatever, he's pretty chill that way! This dragon is big! It measures 105mm across and will be cast in polyurethane resin. The wings come unattached. (Add-on cost: $25) As we hit these stretch goals, more miniatures will be added to the Core Set, Mushroom Set, and/or made available as add-ons! First up: When we reach $12,000, Cyragnome the gnomish swashbuckler will be added to the Core Set. He will also be available as a $4 add-on. Cyragnome is a fearless fighter with a flair for the dramatic. Many a bandit has had his knees bloodied by Cyragnome's flashing blade! When we reach $14,500 the Male Goblin Warrior will be unlocked and added to the Otker and the Mob adventuring party in the Core Set. He will also be available as a $4 add-on. Goblin warriors are fearless in battle. Often facing much larger foes, they often triumph through a combination of lucky crits and really bad attack rolls from lvl 1 adventurers! When we reach $17,000 the Female Goblin Ranger will be unlocked and added to the Otker and the Mob adventuring party in the Core Set. She will also be available as a $4 add-on. Ricochet the goblin ranger got her nickname by bouncing a bolt off a guard's shield and into another guard's exposed back. Once these goals are reached, we will introduce new ones! Wow! You scrolled so far! Thanks for taking the time you check out our project; you are the best!

  9. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1263001724/hot-and-dangerous-season-ii?ref=profile_created Just saw this on my Facebook feed. Hot and Dangerous was a Kickstarter from Wargamer studio. It was for 32mm and larger pin up miniatures of ladies in historical uniforms and armor. Pin up is not truly accurate. Some had poses that were not fighting stances but most were not really “sexy” poses, and all were fully dressed and armored... one had a wardrobe malfunction but not too terribly so.., Anyway. My Facebook feed shows that a part 2 will be coming to Kickstarter soon. I was satisfied with the first one. @Glitterwolf looks like there will be a conquistador in this one.
  10. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1904826165/nocturna-models-n-paint-acrylic-colors-and-fantasy-figures Nocturna is getting on the new paint band wagon. These seem to be a different line than their already existing paints collaborated with Vallejo. Plus some new figures. Wooo.

Free stickers at 150K. Woo! Stickers! I posted a review of their Little Book of Dungeon Taverns. I highly recommend a second copy, for portability. : https://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/18/18527.phtml https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gamingbooks/towns-and-taverns-2-modular-books-of-battle-mats-for-roleplay?ref=user_menu
  12. Warren of Vile Fungi is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm EST on Friday, November 1. It will include over 2 dozen individual fungoid-based miniatures developed and sculpted by Pedro Navarro. He's been working on this project for over 2 years in collaboration with Mortal Arrow. It's a deep dive into heroic, fantastic, and terrifying fungal beings from the 1970's to the present. Ascomoids, Gas Spores, Basidironds, Ustilagors, corrupted Myconids, and heroic Myconids are just some of the many hand-sculpted miniatures from Pedro. The project itself will be live for only 2 weeks, so please consider supporting this effort by Mortal Arrow and Pedro Navarro. Every little bit of aid is important to us, so we kindly ask that you follow this project at the link below: https://www.kickstarter.com/…/12638849…/warren-of-vile-fungi You can see more details about the miniatures on the Mortal Arrow Facebook and Pedro's blog here: http://mr-bugman.blogspot.com/ We will be posting details and updates on this thread as well. Thanks in advance for everyone's help and enthusiasm!!! We are very excited to bring scary, and heroic, fungi to peoples around the globe!!
  13. Microworld Games (which I run) has their first Kickstarter ever live: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/microworld-games/6mm-fantasy-crusader-kingdom/ All stretch goals have been met, with a bit less than 2 weeks to go. I know 6mm fantasy is a bit of a niche within a niche, but thought I would post for anyone interested in element-based mass battle wargaming. I'm hoping the KS platform enables me to push out more interesting projects a bit quicker.
  14. At $50 plus $20 for the 20' x 16" single-map pledge that I'd be interested in, this one's on the expensive side. However, if you like most of the maps, the pledge of $200 plus $30 shipping for six maps is a better price, and its certainly a gift to the "DM who has everything". Except for the write-on map, each map comes with a PDF adventure. Each pledge level has an EB with free vinyl stickers. Only 24 hours to go. I backed Yarro's previous book of maps KS, and was quite satisfied. The maps were slightly cartoony, but I liked them quite a bit, particularly for their variety. I'm only interested in the city map, and I have two other KS I'm backing next month, so will be skipping this one. I'll be back if and when he does another map (or sticker) KS. 17. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/capritor/the-capritor-pretty-lethal-miniatures-collection/description A small STL KS for 10 CA$. The first stretch goal has already been unlocked. It's a bit over the place (cheesecake, dwarves, grungs), but the models look nice and the price is good.
  18. 150 miniatures and counting! $109 base pledge. By the Sadler Brothers (Descent, Gears of War, Mansions of Madness). "Roll to resolve" dice mechanic with some HeroQuest nostalgia. Playthrough videos explain the rules well. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blacklistgames/altar-quest/description "Using the Modular Deck System (MDS), introduced in Street Masters and Brook City, the game features incredibly modular gameplay using several different types of decks. Hero decks, threat decks, villain decks, and quest decks can all be mixed and matched along with altar cards, feature cards, and other game elements to create countless combinations of unique adventures. With an engaging one-off experience and narrative campaign play, Altar Quest offers players endless adventure in a unique fantasy setting with years of support planned for the game. Miniatures are unpainted, but here's a painted pic by one of the designers and painter...

  22. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/firstlegion/first-legion-heroic-scale-28mm-fantasy-figures?ref=discovery&term=First legion Just ran across this. I’m not familiar with the company, but they seem pretty established in the historical line. Anyone have thoughts on these? The price per figure seems reasonable for good resin.

There Are Weird Things Out Here, My Friends… When we conceived The Outer Dark podcast in 2015, we never expected it to take off like it has and to mean so much to listeners. As the tendrils of the Weird spread further into speculative fiction, film, and TV, people kept asking me and Anya when we were going to do something more hands-on. Thus was born The Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird. At the inaugural The Outer Dark Symposium in 2017, we were humbled to assemble a blockbuster line-up of contemporary Weird writers, including members of the State of Black Science Fiction community. In 2018, we took the symposium West and dreamed bigger and spookier with the Winchester Mystery House, and in 2019, we brought it back to Atlanta to Silver Scream FX Lab, a location that’s all about the love of Weird monsters. For the past three years, the symposium has been a labor of Weird love, only made possible through a combination of memberships, sponsorships, donations, and crowdsourcing. Our hope always has always been to simply break even and make this an annual event. It takes a Weird Village to make Something Weird Happen. THE OUTER DARK SYMPOSIUM happens because YOU supported us, allowing us to share these important conversations with YOU and the Whole Weird World on our host network This Is Horror. If you haven’t checked it out, you can find programming from all three past symposia, as well as interviews with our guests and other groundbreaking Weird Renaissance authors on The Outer Dark podcast. This year we’re thrilled to welcome our largest line-up yet, more than 50 of the most dynamic authors, editors, artists, publishers, and scholars in Weird fiction today. Yet our goal remains to keep the symposium immersive, intimate, and budget-responsible. Everyone attends all panels and readings and shares breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as welcome and author signing receptions and social activities to continue the conversation into the night. While keeping the same feasible model that worked well for the previous two symposiums, this year we raised our attendance to 100 memberships so more people can participate, plus we added an Educators Day on Friday including the inaugural Teaching Diversity in Weird and Speculative Fiction Roundtable, with a Friday-only deeply discounted ticket for educators and students. We couldn’t assemble such an amazing line-up of program participants without waiving ticket fees and providing air and lodging support (approx. $7,000 or more than half our budget) to guests who needed support to participate, as well as covering meals, lodging, and gas for our hardworking volunteers. Other expenses include space rental, catering, audio equipment, badge printing/laminating, printing the program chapbook (offered to supporting members via this campaign), and other basic event expenses adding up to a total budget of about $13,500, even with every tactic of frugality that we can muster. By our calculations, calculating purchased memberships, sponsors and a few patrons that we have now, we need about $4,000 to break even. If by any unlikely chance, we do make any more than we need, that money will go straight back into seeding next year's symposium. Therefore we are humbly reaching out to you again. Through this Indiegogo campaign, you can both help sustain The Outer Dark Symposium and receive cool rewards.
