Have been poorly and unable to paint but I was counting giants for a certain Glacial Rift and we have 11 so far mostly Bones this time and all painted at least 3 years ago-the little one is a touch up of my 1980s enamel paint job! The old naked one is from a game but I can't remember the name as I only bought the figures from eBay-head Canon is that he's a bit of a fundie and only believes in "Runes and Rocks" I do like that there are four female giants here and 3 of them I tried to use traditional Scandinavian fabrics on.I have to confess the Queen is based on Elsa...sorry

EDIT - This is now going to be somewhere I dump all my Reaper projects while (hopefully) not causing chaos by misusing the Show Off section. I'll pop finished miniatures that are individually worth looking at over there, too. My first post on the Reaper Forum, so please be nice! Not 100% sure where to post this as it falls into several categories. but here it is anyway - my Reaper Bones Hill Giant "Tribe" and their hillside display base. I posted these in my regular Warhammer forum but they are too far removed from WFB to gain much interest, so I thought I'd share them here in their "proper" home. I've always painted miniatures with the "excuse" that they will be used to play games with, whether that be D&D or Warhammer or anything in between, so my emphasis is on table-ready minis rather than masterpieces. This is one of the first projects I've done without a clear gaming purpose, but because I'm a gamer at heart I still needed to put everything on individual bases for two reasons - 1 - "just in case" a gaming use comes up 2 - because gaming bases excuses a gaming paint job! I decided on hex bases because I liked the way they tessellate The paint scheme, choice of pets and landscape are inspired by my AD&D days, I'm constantly trying to recapture my youth! (Glad to say that Reaper Bones have finally made this sort of project practical and affordable, and I hope to follow it with similar projects using the other trad D&D Giant races.) All 11 miniatures used (and the 11th is very hard to spot in these two pictures!) are from Reaper, mostly Bones. There are a few relatively simple conversions, mostly so I could use two pairs of giants without them being identical. The major scenic elements (trees and rocks) are made from errr real trees and real rocks, while almost all of the greenery is from a range of suppliers (Citadel, Army Painter and so on) I tried to position all of the models so that they are focused on something located just in front of the scene - presumably, a party of hostile adventurers! I don't want to drown people in images, but if there is interest I can post individual pictures of each giant and some WIP pictures of the project, as well as the identity of that 11th miniature...

Whether used to represent Grendel himself, or shrunken down slightly and used as a troll, he includes the table and benches from the mead hall, Heorot, as well as his utterly epic foe, Beowulf. I really like that they're all themed encounters with monsters, heroes, and some terrain. They remind me of the "GameMastery Encounter" packs that Paizo used to make.

Since it's arrival last month, I've been experimenting with my first 3D Printer. Today marked the first finished painted projects that were made on it. Several Giants, designed by Duncan "Shadow" Louca. The Gourdlock, by dutchmogul: One of my favorite finds while randomly searching for STL files, the Dwarf Rock Star, also by dutchmogul. Completing my Frostgrave Bestiaries is an eventual goal...here's a simple crab from Rocket Pig Tortles seem to be the new hotness since their introduction in a charity event tied to "Tomb of Annihilation". These guys are a mix from Fat Dragon and the wonderful DM Workshop The last are a murder of Redcaps, again designed by DM Workshop. I swapped out their weapons to give them some variety.

For the most recent works in progress, a gigantic distraction from my poor Death Guard project. In the last week, multiple delayed Kickstarters (and one on-time Nickstarter) arrived...as well as the ReaperCon Swag Bag! Arrivals included: Stonehaven Miniatures Giants Stonehaven Adventurers 2017 Midlam Miniatures "Winter Adventurers" Reapercon Swag Bag Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago Nickstarter While I am trying to complete the Death Guard, I did ready these groups for prime time: The Giants are nicely sized. While there are some issues with the scaling between Giant "tribes" in comparison to 5E entries, they do tower over adventurers. The Wolf Lord, who I expected to be an Ogre-sized werewolf, is massive!

Fi fie fo fum! Just in time for my "Storm King's Thunder" campaign to be long over, here come the Giants from Stonehaven Miniatures! The Hill Giant Rustler: The Sleepyhead: Smile on, smilodon! The Giant Barbarian. I believe the intent was as a Hill Giant, but I have a ton of those. His warpaint is based on runes from "Storm King's Thunder" The Cloud Giant: The Storm Giant. He's a great design, but he's rather small compared to the other Giants. It was a debate on what color of Dragon to use for his armor: The Fire Giant, who was probably my favorite to paint. She's a nice, simple design but gets the point across. The Treant: The only small miniature that I painted so far, but still from the Stonehaven Giants Kickstarter so it counts: The Entling!

I saw that Stonehaven just launched another kickstarter! Stonehaven's Giants Huge Humanoids and Creatures for your adventurers to encounter and to bulk out your RPG dungeon or tabletop wargame armies!

No fancy photos currently of these guys. The quilting on their bracers and belts I decided to paint like dragon scales since giants and dragons have such a long-standing hatred for one another, at least in D&D lore. I love these bigger sculpts!

Although there was a tragic sealant malfunction, I managed to save the first set of minis I've completed in some time using some tips and tricks...and having a better can of sealant available to fix the foggies. Since I am still running Storm King's Thunder, I thought the first minis from the Kickstarter I would paint should be the Giants of Bones 3. First, we have the whole lot, with Sir Forscale striking a pose. Then, we'll just get frosty: The King: The Queen (clearly the one in charge) A Frost Giant standing guard: A more eager Giant: Then, we heat things up with the Fire Giants! The King says, "That knight went that way!" A Warrior pursues. I removed the spiked ball and chain from his belt...I wasn't a big fan of that look. I left the bases as a decoration. Another Fire Giant guard stands by, in case Forscale returns. The Jailor stands by, awaiting the Knight's return in chains. You may notice the Fire Giant Queen is missing...I thought she was too similar to the original, and wanted to convert her to a more active pose, since Bones are so much easier to cut. She's been set aside for now. Overall, I think the recovery process from the sealer foggies went well. Looking at the photos, the process de-flocked their bases more than anything, which I'll fix. Eventually.

Bones 3 had a bit of an unfortunate arrival time for me, coming in the middle of an unplanned move. It may have taken me a bit, but I'm finally getting started on some of the pieces! I even took them with me for some down time on our yearly beach vacation, though my set-up here is not very scenic: That was last week, and now they're a bit closer to completion, with some details and fixes, basing, and sealing to be done. Some Bones 3 furniture snuck in as well:

Yet another of my impulse buys from Reaper Miniatures, I recently finished Reaper's "Jack and the Beanstalk" boxed set, plus a duo of back-up for our beleaguered Giant. They'll certainly be useful in "Storm King's Thunder", so I may actually have a purpose for this! Be nimble, young Jack! What's this you run from? A nest? Perhaps they're gold on the inside (this way they're useful for a few more scenarios) Ah, that's how you got up this high: What's that coming after you? The sound of thunder... Close up, our pursuer reminds me of Trevor Philips of GTA V: Ah, Cyclopean back-up from the West Winds, borrowing a spare head from our first Giant: Another cold-blooded comrade joins our Giants in the chase for young Jack: The young Jack seems woefully outnumbered and outsized: Ah, but to the rescue comes Sir Forscale, demonstrating that bigness is no match against scale shots:

Boring day. Wife working. Kids doing kid stuff. So let's paint some giants. They are just friends. They are both painted in "human" colors so I can use them as any type of giant. This is the storm giant and cloud giants from bones kickstarter... They are on 80mm bases from wrath if kings. The male had a sword swap (from wrath of kings) as his sword was hopelessly bent.

Adding to the eternal march of the Giants, my first completed pieces from the "Blood Rage" Kickstarter are the big guys. First we have the Frost Giant: A rather bestial Fire Giant, who apparently got the short end of the sealant on his crown...to be fixed, as I only noticed now: The Mountain Giant (my personal favorite and one of the reasons I had to back it, as a Kickstarter exclusive) The slightly less giant Troll: And some group shots: And one with Sir Forscale, for scale:

Trying to expand the bestiary for "Frostgrave". The Frost Trolls (Yetis) are former Shaggy Man from HeroClix, the apes are also former clix, and the Frost Giant is a Pathfinder Frost Giant converted to a heavy infantry type...not specifically for Frostgrave but fit the theme. First paints are applied, and Lars the Linkboy is there for scale.

I was lining up my larger humanoids in a row and made an observation, relating to the new larger giants coming out (in Bones 3), mass, and CR (using 3.x D&D/Pathfinder rules). So I thought I'd share my thoughts. :) It seems that for basic humanoids (without regeneration or other fancy rules that boost up their CR beyond their base mass) there's generally a fairly even progression. Which is there's a +1 to CR for every 5mm of mini height (1ft in game) beyond the base 28mm (5'7") mini size. Based off CR added to any class levels. +0 CR ≈ 30mm (6ft.) Standard size for human mini +1 CR ≈ 35mm (7ft.) "Advanced" template Orc Boss (77064). +2 CR ≈ 40mm (8ft.) Bugbears (77015). +3 CR ≈ 45mm (9ft.) Ogres (77105). I'm assuming the Bones 3 Ogres will be about the same size. +5 CR ≈ 55mm (11ft.) Giant-kin (Bones 1 Fire/Frost Giants). +7 CR ≈ 65mm (13 ft.) Hill Giants (77313). +8 CR ≈ 70mm (14 ft.) Stone Giants (77336). Ya they're a bit lightly built but it roughly works. +9 CR ≈ 75mm (15 ft.) Frost Giants (Bones 3). This seems to be about how tall they'll be. +10 CR ≈ 75mm* (15 ft.) Fire Giants (Bones 3). *As they're so wide they're a bit shorter they otherwise would be. So what do you think? If there's any merit to my line of thinking I hope we see some 85mm Cloud Giants (CR 11) and 95mm Storm Giants (CR 13) some time in the future. Bones 4?

Two nights in so far, from bare unwashed Bones to some base earth colors and inks on some of our barbaric friends; Giants, Bugbears, and Minotaurs (oh my!)

After seeing some of the preview art for Pathfinder's upcoming "Giantslayer" adventure path, I wanted to work on some non-standard Giants. I already had 02933: Talanka, Ogre Shaman, who was repainted alongside [/size]60027: Dorella Kreeg, Ogre Shaman, who was a lucky find on another expedition over to border to North Carolina.[/size] I really liked the Dorella sculpt in person, her proportions work well to be an Ogre Shaman or a wizened old Hill Giant hag.[/size]

This was in the "Bones We'd Like to See" thread. I didn't want to derail, so here's a new thread. How have giants changed over the years in D&D and other games? Why were they changed? Do the changes make certain minis obsolete, assuming one is strict about base size and scale? Inquiring minds want to know.

Still trying to figure out a good lighting combination for the camera on the new phone. Work schedule means I don't see the sunlight for natural lighting, sadly.
