Here are another 2 wraiths -

I painted Space Marines from 1988 to around 1994 and then fell out of the mini painting hobby. I just got back into it and the Grave Wraith is my first effort. As I was stuck on how to paint him apart from covering him in black, I had a look around and based his look on this one by Vulture but decided to go with purple rather than blue. The sword, which I thought would be a doddle, caused me all sorts of problems (I kept overthinking it) until I just went with a gold hilt and silver blade. I have yet to base him — in the photo I have him sitting on top of a small jar. He was photographed at f6.3, 1/25s. A few random thoughts while I was painting him: Wow, these things are smaller than I remember. Flash! AAARRRGGGHH! My eyesight has really gone down the tubes since 1990... Any criticism/advice is welcome as I can't wait to get on with painting another figure (probably 03374 Ragnaros, Evil Warrior)

The WIP is here: A little less see-through than I'd like, but the light still passes. There is glow in the dark medium used, but it's not very effective, and would never come into play anyway.

I had so much fun with my slimes I decided to do a few more translucent minis I had handy. These are the Grave Wraith and Nightspectre (somewhere else I have a Ghostly Summons 77095, Labella DeMornay 77096, and a spare Spirit 77098 that I will paint another time). I wanted to do these quickly, so it's ink mostly - the same ones as with the slimes, plus maybe a few darker phthalos. I've done a coat of glow in the dark medium for each (photographed), a coat of the not highest green, and picked out the skeletons in the nightspectre with a wash of medium and brown liner and base coated the grave wraith's sword and tombstone in a dark blue-grey. not photographed Eventually everything will get a drybrush of spectral glow (and maybe another, mixed with maggot white, in a few spots). For the nightspectre, I'm going to try and treat it as a fire and get darker going out. With the wraith, I'm going to go lighter out from the bottom centre. Plus highlights for both. The goal will be for them to be mostly translucent (and glow in the dark, because everything gets that medium). Hopefully I'll figure out how much direct light, and how much medium I need to be able to photograph this. Photos later today in subsequent posts.

I try to comfom to the posting title and tags rules as laid down by the high and mighty,..please let me know if anything need to be done differently. --- So, 2017 has arrived.Time to mess about with spirits. The first series of translucent Bones were made either in orange or in a bright greenish tinge, and it seems I only ever got round to painting one or two of the green ones. We can't have that, can we? As with all the translucents, the key is to prime the model with matte varnish. I use Army Painter Anti-Shine spray for this. After that I use mainly inks as they also are translucent. I have learned the hard way that normal paints are opaque and should be kept to a minimum if I want to keep the minis even slightly translucent. For this piece I started with a liberal coating of Vallejo Green Ink, taking care to draw off exessive pooling of ink with a damp brush. After that I used some old red lidded hexpot Citadel Turquoise Glaze on the bottom half. I detailed the mini with a very light dusting of normal light bone paint on it's visible skeletal hand, and a slightly heavier drybrushing of ScaleColour Cobalt Alchemy light blue metallic on the sword and crossguard, as if it is half-materialized. I also painted the inside of the hood's cowl with ScaleColor Bloodfest Crimson (a very dark red/brown). What cannot be seen in the pictures are the pinpoint bright yellow/green eyes in the depths of the cowl. The gravestone with skulls was done in typical greys and bone-colour with a simple strong tone quickshade for effect. Put some Tamiya clear colors on a few Bones this weekend and I love the results. Goes on like a wash so it takes no time at all and both gives interesting color effects and makes the figure more clearly translucent. Here is a Grave Wraith with Tamiya Clear Smoke on he robes and Clear Green on the sword, I'll throw a few more up when I get home.

These are a couple of miniatures that I meant to finish quickly but wound up spending a bit more time on. Orc Berserker. Most just quickshading but some extra attention paid to the skin. Quite happy with the result and will try to do the same with the the other bones orcs. Grave Wraith. Not much more than black + dry brush. I tried to do some OSL but I failed. It just wasn't to be this time. Labella Dermonay, Banshee. I really like this figure and I tried the "prime white and add lots of washes" technique I read about on these forums. I'm really happy with the result. Night Spectre. Same "trick" as Labella, except with green instead of blue. Didn't work out as well but in the end it resulted in a finished mini.

I think I have two more batches to post, so just enough to last me until Friday. I love the translucent bones, great fun to paint and super fast. Finally got around to painting up the nightspectre and I don't think my Grave Wraith has made it on here yet either, so here they are.

This was my very first attempt at OSL - I don't think I suceeded (I polled for opinions already in WIP) but I learned a lot and, hey, when it's a choice between repainting significant parts of the mini, or just buying a new mini to try again, the price tag of under $3 makes that an easy choice. Since that WIP I made very little changes to the mini - brightened up a bit of the blue, extended it out of the cowl a bit more, and of course did the base. The idea is that the opening in the face, the opening in the left arm, and the hilt of the sword are glowing with a faint blue light. I don't believe that really carried - it's too subtle. C'est la vie, I rather like the look anyway. To answer questions regarding painting - I "primed" the ghostly guy with Reaper Matte Sealer, then I just washed the bulk of the mini with a mixture of black Ink, Clear Green, and water. It clouded the translucency a bit, but not too badly. The sword was painted metalic, and the "light bits" were done with varying shades of Valeo's "Andrea Blue" and reaper's "Pure White." I cut off the gravestone since I didn't like how it pushed my mini to one side on the 1" washer - I wanted it centered. The rest of the base was built up with polyform model air, then covered with a mixture of baking soda and glue - I painted this walnut brown to make it look like grave dirt, then drybrushed on intense brown, then a light dusting of ginger cookie. Then I put on some dead-looking static grass.

This is my first attempt at OSL! I will admit, I feel like I'm pretty much done with this but kind of want to throw it out there for comment - the general idea behind this paint is that parts of the mini are glowing pale blue, the sources of light are inside the cowl, inside the left "hand" opening of the shroud, and the hilt of the sword. I got this idea from the flame-like hilt. The runes on the sword are the same color. Incidentally, for technique, I "primed" with the Reaper matte sealer, did a wash with black ink, water, and some clear green to tint it. The glow is supposed to be blue, that's mostly Valeo "Andrea Blue" with varying amounts of white. Comments very, very welcome. I haven't done anything more to the mini other than start to dress up the base. I don't think I quite suceeded in what I am aiming for, but I haven't decided if I'm going to keep stabbing at it, or just make it a learning experience for next time.
